[Q] Streak not seeing apps installed on SD card - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello great minds of xda, for the past 2 months I've been having an issue with my streak not seeing apps installed on my SD card. sometimes a reboot would solve the problem, but most of the time multiple reboots yield no results. Whenever the card is not recognized I am unable to connect my phone to my computer, nor can I install any apps from market or otherwise.
Ok so here's the strange part, file browsers like Astro can see and open files on the SD card, yet SD installed apps are not shown in the app drawer, under settings/manage apps SD installed apps are shown but their icons are greyed out and can not be manipulated.
Background info: was running 318, installed streakdroid 1.9, problem persisted, had a 16 gig sandisk card, bought a 32 gig sandisk card, problem persisted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried with a different card ? Just to see if the problem is card-related ?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App

Yes I did, in fact I was hoping that it was card related because that would be a simple fix. I replaced the original 16 gig card that came with the Streak with a brand spanking new 32 gig card but the problem continues.
I've done both google and xda searches and get tons of hits about SD cards not being recognized but my Streak recognizes my card, just not the apps installed on it.

To be honest, I have no advise for you, just hope someone who knows better can provide a suggestion.
I'm using a 32gb card in my phone myself, but fortunately, doesn't seem to have similar issues.
Good luck ... and maybe someone can help

Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Hopefully someone will have a solution, I really love my Streak but this problem greatly reduces the usability of my device

ninpo,
Test your internal SD card:
1. Turn off your Streak
2. Hold down the camera button all the way, as you turn on your Streak
3. At the white screen, dial in the code *#301# – This will open the engineering mode that allows you to run individual tests.
4. Dial in 10 then press Enter to run the ‘SD & SIM’ test
5. The “Internal SD” test should pass, and it should show “permanent write-nonprotect”.
If the internal card is bad it may be effecting other operations.
If the internal card passes, then uninstall all of your apps that are installed to the SD card. Backup all of the files from your SD Card. Format the card while it is in your phone.
Put your backups back on the card and re-install your apps.
If you are using or have used the perfmod from any of the Streakdroid builds I suggest a factory reset from recovery, install BB 351 or 354 (install appropriate recovery first) and then if you want reinstall Streakdroid without perfmod.

Thanks marvin02 I will give that a shot and report back with the results.

Corrected the codes on the steps to test internal sd card, the formatting got messed up in the copy and paste.

Hey guys, sorry for the disappearing act, had a lot going on as of late.
Anyways, thanks Marvin for the advice, the SD card test showed no issue with the card, but I was still unable to uninstall apps on the card. I called Dell tech and they gave me a service number and asked that I call back late Sept. and they will send me a replacement.

Switch off your phone, switch it back on. If that does not work, take out your sdcard and try plugging it in your laptop directly through a USB adapter.
i tried that already

How is your card formatted? Fat, Fat32, NFTS?
Did you drag-n-drop your video folder into some other folder by mistake ?
Search for large files on the sdcard.
fat 32 its the 16 gig from rogers, class 2

This happened to me a bit ago, but put it down to how the card was formatted, but it's not happened since reformatting. Try reformatting and take it from there.
Same thing happened to me as well lost my pics of the last day at the college as well as a few songs and walpapers. :-(
And was wondering what went wrong....??! :-(

[Q] Apps and SD Card

ok. I hope this isnt too much of a newb question...
I have looked all over to see if I could find any problems with people getting apps off of their SD card. I found a few topics and reviewed them, but I have had little luck. Most of those threads also involve root problems whereas my Evo 3d is still stock (updated to 2.3.4).
The main problem Im having (aside from linpak and various other benchmarks being dramatically reduced) is that I can not get the apps off of my SD card to show on the phone.
I performed a factory reset on the phone prior to the update as I've read several times that it is the preferred method of updating since it wipes the Dalvik (sp?) cache or whatever. I guess if you just update without wiping, it clogs up the cache or something to that effect.
Anyhow, I moved all the apps to SD. I did the wipe, then I did the OTA. Once the OTA was complete it would not recognize my apps at all. They DO NOT show up under app management as being on the SD. It is blank. It does however still show my music and pictures.
Since I swapped my 8 GeeBee card with a 16 I figured perhaps the card was corrupted somehow. So, I took my OEM Sandisk 8gb card and put that in and it wont transfer the apps that were on that either.
Ive tried to restart. Nothing. Ive unmounted the SD card, restarted without a card. Shut down. Put card back in, mounted. Still nothing .
Any help guys...and again, sorry if this is a newb question.
Use any third party apps? I believe the system installer doesn't check external storage. Try Astro free and you should be ok. Let me know what you run into

Ooh and most benchmarks for this phone are inaccurate due to its resolution. They may have updated to account for this but that's what I've heard as of late.
It's a 1.2 factory dual core so why of super Oct'd phones and tablets you should reign supreme.

I have a couple apps from Amazon but not many. so when I used astro I tried to find the apps and couldn't find any. Normally on my PC they are listed under Android secure...when I pull that up with astro it says directory empty..but they do show up when I have the card in my laptop...
Also, when I switched my sd out before all I had to do was copy the files and pop it in the phone. They showed up right away. Not sure why phone won't recognize them now.

Tries an adb push?
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
They shouldn't be in secure yet I'd they're typically ibstalld
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Yeah. I'm not sure what the deal is. I just ended up wupping the sd card and starting over. I have a spare sd I moved all my pics and such to so I'm not too worried about it.

[Q] 123 App Limit on SD card

Does anyone know how to get around the limit of installing no more than 123 apps to SD? I have a Samsung Epic. I can install more than that to SD but when I reboot my phone doesn't see the apps on the SD card and it slows down and becomes unusable. I know I can move some to the phone, but I don't want to do that. I have tried different Froyo and Gingerbread roms. Is there any way to up the limit past 123? Thanks.
I can honestly say that I do not have this issue.
I have an Epic 4G Touch, and currently have 202 apps on my SD card with no issues.
I am currently running the Stock ROM.
Are you on Gingerbread? Is your phone rooted? I use Titanium Backup to restore my apps.
Running GB, 2.3.4
Rooted
I also use TB, but everything on there now is a fresh install.
Feel free to use me to help narrow down some of the possibilities for why yours isn't working...
I'm also using GB, Rooted and I use Titanium. What do you mean everything on there is a fresh install? You didn't use Titanium to restore it?
I've tried different SD cards to no avail. I've tried having different roms, kernels and modems to no avail. As soon as i put app # 124 on my card (doesn't matter what app it is), and then I reboot my device, my phone then becomes unusable in the GUI.

When I say everything on is a fresh install, I mean that I'm re-downloading and installing everything in very small batches, rather than using what I had backed up. After I get something down, and verify that it is working, I back it up.
The reason for this is that I kept getting my phone stuck in a bootloop, and couldn't figure out what was causing it. So I decided that it was almost as easy to re-download everything as it was to restore from backup, since I was pretty much doing it all one app at a time.
AppBrain has made that easier than I expected, though it hasn't relieved any of the tedium.
This may be an absurd question, but after you have broken the 123 barrier and rebooted, have you let your phone sit undisturbed for a while so that everything has a chance to catch up?
I know that as the amount of apps on my SD increases, the time from boot until the phone is "usable" increases as well. I've gotten around this by using Tasker to reboot the phone about fifteen minutes or so before I wake in the morning. That way, no matter if it takes two minutes or ten, it has plenty of time.
Also, have you tried completely busting the 123 barrier? Perhaps jumping straight to 150 or something would make a difference.
Googling for a brief bit only finds a couple of references to there being a limit on the number of apps, but that was supposedly resolved after Froyo.
Yes, I realize it takes a while to discover all the apps on the card after booting. I give it a while and the icons still just stay as a generic SD icon. If I go into Manage Applications those apps on the card are just the generic icon.
I have about 200 apps. I've restored them all before with Titanium and it still has the same problem. I've searched the web as well and saw that someone said it may be a Froyo limitation, but I've tried different Gingerbread roms and the problem still exists.
I've also tried RFS and EXT and it makes no difference.

Do you have the same problem using different SD cards?

Yes, I bought a new SD card and still have the same problem. Old card was 16GB class 2, new card is 32GB class 4.
I've backed up and restored with MyBackup Pro as well and the same problem exists.

Some ROMs (like Cyanogenmod) let you move apps to the SD after installing on internal. You might try moving an app doing that and see if that breaks your barrier.
Also, try using that SD formatter for windows that Samsung or Panasonic make. A Google search will turn it up.

I would suggest trying a class 10 sd card, but a class 6 should do fine. Also look for a firmware update for your phone as that could be the issue.
I've already tried using the card the way it came, I've formatted with Windows, I've formatted with CWM, I'm not so sure that using SD formatter will make much difference.
I have already tried moving apps to SD with the built-in app to sd functionality and it still causes problems when I get above 123 apps.

I don't have a class 10 sd card sitting around, so I can't try that. Why would the speed of the card affect how many apps can run off it?
What do you mean try a firmware update? I've tried the stock rom, and many custom froyo (ec05) and gb (ei22) roms and the problem still happens.
the faster the card the more bandwidth it has, so it can access more things at any given time.
Small question: Do you really use all of those apps?

Epic 4G Move App to SD card limit
HI
I am experiencing the same problem with my EPIC 4G on a Gingerbread ROM. I have tried multiple times with different kernels to work with more than 150 apps on the SD card.
They all move over fine, but on the first reboot the phone fails to find them and goes in to a reproducible loop where it starts up, works very slowly for 2 minutes, then gives a haptic feedback buzz as it reboots, over and over for days.
I know the limit is between 84 and 150 apps on the SD card because I have a working backup image with 84 apps moved over. My experience has been that around the 120+ mark, it just goes very bad very quickly.
If you don't mind my asking, how do you know the limit is 123?
Colin

App to SD problem (sk17i)

Hi everyone, I have one question regarding my Xperia Mini Pro sk17i.
1 month back i could have easily moved large amount of my newly installed apps to SD card without any problem. But recently whatever I install, I just cannot move it on SD anymore. I understand there are many apps that cannot be moven, but whatever i tried to install (randomly) from Google store just stays on my phone and option to move it to SD is blank (unavailable). Now, I'm wondering is this something that happens frequently, or have I maybe done something that somehow blocked that function?
I'll note this app (which previously when i had no problem moving apps from phone to SD or other way around wasn't installed):
Disk Defragmenter
another note: I never rooted or flashed my phone in any way, just regular updates. I'm currently on 4.0.4 version ( installed it 5 minutes ago, but still problem with moving to SD).
I have never face a problem like u'r..i'm using 4.0.4 too..
format u'r sd card and try
thanks for reply.
Well, i considered doing that, but i have so much settings on my phone that would take ages to redo once i reinstall all the apps...
Hey bro try link2sd then
Try formatting sd card and reset factory settings. Or you can root and move any app to sd..
Sent from my WT19i using xda app-developers app
use Link2SD is much better
Thanks for your time guys, I've formated and it looks like it's working now. I'll just have to spend some time to readjust settings like they were before. Thank you again. Lock if needed.
Glad to hear it. Good luck

[Q] move to sd? How bout no!

Sooooooo...
I recently updated my i9300 to foxhound 0.1, which is android 4.2.2.
It works fine and all BUT sometimes when installing apps or updating them they get installed to sd card automatically!
I did some googling, without much luck though since it seems i'm the only one interested in keeping my apps on the internal storage rather than the micro sd.
I had the doubt this was either the fault of apps like
App2sd/Link2sd so i uninstalled them (i really never actually used them), but i doubt it was their making...
What happened is with this new 4.2.2 now i am able to actually move apps to sd card (while on any other rom i dont even recall being able to) and this is cool, but i don't need it. Problem is my phone WANTS to.
So how can i change the default installation directory before i choose to throw my phone against the wall?:banghead:

About what sd are you talking? Internal sd which is actually the internal memory or external sd which is your micro sd?
Sent from my Nexus 7 (2013)
He is talking about them going to the micro SD card.
Exactly external sd. They just go there themselvesn it doesn't occur with all apps, so i'm guessing maybe the devs put some preferences in the installation properties? I think i recall reading about android devs being able to do this somewhere in their projects.....
