Oh the glory and the smell of a new phone. As I posted a few weeks ago, the HTC S420 is coming. This is the follow on to the StarTrek and I must say, with some nice feature upgrades. We know, there is NO WiFi, but I am willing to sacrifice sleekness for a few things. Did we already mention that it will have WM6, 400Mhz CPU, GPS Receiver, Quad-Band, FM Radio, UMTS, and a 2.0 mega-pixel camera. Oh yea!!
So gentlemen and ladies, get your Credit Cards warmed up because supposedly we have a RTS/Release date of May 16th, 2007.
Here are some sites that are taking pre-orders. Click here to see some Froogle ads. (I in no way endorse these sites) Matter of fact I prefer the good ol' eBay way or MobilePlanet myself.
And yes...The initial sticker price is high but just give it a few weeks and your carriers should have them in stock.
Enjoy -

Thanks for the info. This is the first time I read something about a release date of this little beauty.
In Denmark??
Hi.. Do you think that this phone is gonna be on the marked in may, in Denmark to??
Would be great
hmm ive only seen a mock up CGI type pic of the unit not an actual live photo, any around?
Today it's the 18th. No news on it so far on the Net. I hope it will be released soon, though I do not excpect it before june. We'll see.
I hoping we at least see it in June. No one has yet seen a pre-production/release model yet which usually crops up first. I checked with Haider at SMG and he has no word. There are a couple of folks who have the pre-production S630s so we will probably see that released first. Dopod has also announced their version of. As of yet, I have seen no official announcements on the erato.
I need it the HTC S420
if there not even an in the wild tru pic knocking around the net ,then i doubt we are anywere near getting it myself

I agree. Let's hope their just looking for better battery life before releasing this little baby.
I was hoping it would be out...and that the Bluetooth to Uconnect would sound better (my main complaint about the StarTrek)

HTC S420 (also known as Erato) has been canceled.
HTC announced it on 29. May. They cancel releasing and doesnt start to produce the smartphone.
That sucks but would not be totally unexpected.
Can you give us the link to the press release since it's not (yet) on one of the HTC sites?
This message appeared here: http://obchod.sunnysoft.cz/scripts/shop_NF.asp
It's Czech, not English. But I am sure you understand what does mean the cross on the picture.

I find that weird that they are canceling a great phone but you never know. I did call the HTC Bellevue office and they knew nothing of a cancellation. I will email the Taiwanese location and see if there have been any developments. You never know.
Just do clarify, Froogle and PDAdb.net has the phone still coming in July now.

Well, that's just what sunnysoft said. And after all the crap they posted (i.e. Qtek 8500 has miniUSB, selling extUSB>JACK as microUSB>JACK,............), who will believe to what they said? They also said that Treo 750 will never be shipped to Europe
Another info from simon211175 at modaco (his post)
Last week I emailed HTC europe to find out if the StrTrk/Qtek 8500 was going to be given the WM6 facelift. When they said (in vague terms) "no", I asked when its successor (S420/Erato) will be out.
The reply was "The release date for the HTC 420 is expected to be in July 2007"
I know this probably means September at the earliest, but it's a start.

Now I am a bit confused but this message may be few days older...
Well, so far the Czech Sunnysoft site is the only one claiming the Erato is cancelled. No other site confirming it or confirmation from HTC. So, let's cross fingers for a July release

Sure they could, I remember when my ATT 8525 (Hermes) got its WM 6 upgrade. That was long after it was officially released. ATT held on to it for a bit longer.

HTC has been doing really well lately with rom updates. But i have heard that HTC leaves the rom updates for Sprint to Sprint itself to develop them.... but anyways They have put off a rom update for the pro for a while. My guess is that they were going to release a 6.1 update as they did for the diamond, but 6.5 is around now so thee are now working on a 6.5 version. But who knows, sprint tech support are most of the time are full of ****. like for reals, they wil say anything to shut up costumers.. LOL
as far as i have seen with the rom update history with sprint htc phones.... pro users will MOST likely get a 6.1 updated rom..... but you never know!
I have yet to hear about any upgrade yet, but it wouldn't suprise me. We don't hear about major changes until shortly before they go into effect. Half the time, I find out about upcoming phones, or changes to Sprint hear or on PPC geeks prior to hearing about them at work.
It is my understanding that the team responsible for getting ROM updates developed, tested and deployed was let go in the last round of lay offs and that we won't be seeing any more official updates from Sprint unless there is a major issue on HTC phones.
Hey!
This might not be the best place to ask this question (a Hero forum) but here goes.
My current contract runs out beginning of 2010 (UK) and I want to get an Android phone next. So question is do i get a Hero or wait to see if the Moto Droid or SE Racheal come out in the UK before 2010?
Ive been waiting for ages for my current contract to expire so I'm tempted to rush and get a Hero but would that me a mistake!?
Any takers?
If you're on the fence, it might just as well be worth it to wait and see what the other one is like so you never have any doubts.

I concur.
The second you upgrade your phone and take out a new contract, you've effectively made yourself obsolete because the next best thing is always just around the corner.
I got my Hero in July when they first came out, so I'm nearly 6 months down the line, but I'm still happy.
However, if I was in your position, I would probably wait 3 or 4 months to see what happens next because whilst I love my Hero, it is old news even now to a certain extent. I can definitely see HTC releasing a Snapdragon based Android device in the 1st half of 2010, so I would wait if I were you.

New Response From [ Pete (UK - Ireland Support (Tech)) ]
Hi Hywel, thanks for your email.
I understand this may be frustrating, but the 16th was never the release date. there were some 'leaks' on the internet, but those were incorrect, It was never planned for today at all.
The update will be available for everyone from the end of the month as planned. it will be phased out over a week or so to spread out the download demand, but it was certainly never going to appear today.
Best regards,
Pete W

Hi Where is the hero 2.1 upgrade for me to download?? It’s the 16th of April the day the upgrade is scheduled for release. If it’s not released today then when? If this is so then I can’t believe this delay as its been promised again and again !!!!!

They never said that ROM 2.1 will be released on 16th. I don't know where you get that.
1st they said they will release 2.1 ROM upgrades in March. When March came they said that due to some technical issues we have to wait till mid April for release.
So now it is mid April and some tech guy says it will be released at the end of the month. Guess what, at the end of month they will say that it will be released in mid May.
Did you get the game rules now ? They want as to buy their new Incredible phone!
The 16th was on a schedule that was leaked a moth or so ago.
But it should never have been believed anyway.

I think you didn't put enough exclamation marks in your original enquiry for them to take you seriously. And if I were you, I'd sue that guy who promised you update on April 16th again and again. Uh wait. Nobody promised that. Nevermind then.
Imagine having to man the email response section at HTC for the Hero with all the plums emailing you asking every 10 mins when the 2.1 update will be out!
I wonder how high the internal window jumper rate is... or forced handset in throat related deaths in the HTC office..
I also emailed them and they said the android 2.1 updates will be coming out starting at the end of april including for your HTC hero

I don't buy that as it makes little sense. It would hardly increase sales figures for the new devices at all. Most cellphone owners are locked into a contract which means if they want to upgrade before it's renewal time they have two choices.....wait, or pay over the odds to do so.....almost everyone (except die hard early adopters who are an extremely small percentage of owners) chooses the first option.
Then you have the fact that the newer handsets have better hardware and software, and all the ROM upgrades in the world won't change the hardware, so who in their right mind is going to choose an older phone knowing they'll have to mess about and upgrade it when they can just go get the shiny new model for free on another contract?
For all we (I) know, the delays could be due to more tweaks needed to make the ROM run at an acceptable level on handsets that have an inferior hardware spec than those that it was originally designed for.
the delays are mostly due because the htc servers couldnt possibly support all desire, hero and legend updates at the same time, thats why they are rolling ou the updates slowly, starting with the desire network providers, then the legend probably and finally the hero

I know this is not true as I and many of my friends are not on contracts (actually can only think of 1 who is) and prefer to buy outright as to upgrade as we see fit, and change service provider too. But I do agree with your point, it would not be a way to increase sales, more likely just internal bureaucracy is the cause for the set back.
Seriously people, there's a little thing called patience. My mother always told me that good things come to those who wait.
Wondering if MS said anything about their first gen of wp7 are guaranteed to get mango update? I dont recall that upgrade from 6.1 to 6.5 was rolled out to all of their past devices. To give MS justice though, the update took a lot of time and there could be devices more than 1 years old.
Another thing, how come i notice in singapore, mozart is less cheaper compared to trophy.. Whats the upside of throphy compared to mozart?
every windows phoine 7 wil get mango
Trophy is a cheaper phone.
My wife has one, and I a Mozart - the only real difference is the camera and single mold case.
Otherwise, the Mozart is a little smaller - but is much more expensive in Australia (60% more or so).
I kinda like the trophy though..

Yes, in MIX11 they have stated that. Some hardware options embedded in the new hardware chassis won't be available in the 1 GEN of WP7 like gyroscope, but MS also stated they will develop some kind of emulator for this to the current devices. It wont be as good as the hardware ones, but it will work.
All current devices will get Mando for sure.

in hong kong windows 7 phones are droping prices like mad, it's because there are no chinese language for the main menu, and the price for the mozart 7, some shops are selling them more than the HD7.

i know it's 'common sense' - but that doesn't mean anything
Because they've bumped the release number up to 7.5 - this is technically NOT an update but a new version - historically for MS this means no upgrades and until i see or hear one of them say that "current devices will get this as an update" i'm not going to hold my breath.
The OP was looking for someone with DEFINITE PROOF - not just speculating.
at which point do we STOP expecting updates? wp8? WP8.5? wp9? wp10?
In Thailand, the price drop from over 630 USD to 230 USD within 3 months.
WTF HCT marketing.
Even the price are low but no one want to buy its, cuz they don't guarantee mango for this device.
What do you think?
I don't have an official link, i have read on lots of websites that the current devices will have Mango update, and i support this.
On MIX11, they even stated that since hardware gyroscope probably isn't available on current devices, the Mango update will have an emulation mode for these devices.
Also, several hardware specs were added or improved, but not removed.
Microsoft is in this for the long run and they wan't the OS to be successful. I'm sure they will provide future updates to current devices as long as it will be a good experience on current devices. Updates for all devices was also a big spec announced for WP and even if this could be a different version in number, i don't think that would change anything, this is not computers and Windows usually have a minimum 2 year between major versions.
Although this is considered "the next major version of Windows Phone" it is also being treated like an update, and traditionally MS releases the updates for free.
I'm not sure on Windows 8 thought, but i believe that will come at the end of 2012
EDIT: So now that Mango was officially presented by Microsoft and announced as free to all current devices and being available on fall, do you believe me?
I am waiting for my htc hd2 to get mango, so far DFT NODO rom is working perfect.
Every wp7 phone
It is said that "Every existing WP7 phone in the market will get the Mango Update" and the update is in this coming Fall.
MS is now making WP7 just like iPhone iOS where every WP7 phones will get the update just like how NoDo Updates is......for every WP7 phone.
i told you lot before. jsut listen and stop doubting. This is not andoroid (howver not saying android is bad, as its not as a previous user). But I have a feeling mango and the update after that and possible the one after that will be compatiable, until they focus on dual core phones and optimizing them. As whats the point of have a dual core phone if the software only uses on core
