Already spread to all my social networks TrevE has done great work and he has my support.
Going to be putting this into my signature and spreading the word. This is an absolute outrage. I will never be doing business with ciq, and neither will the 100 other people I tell. Also going to be contacting CNN, and some other news contacts. Say good bye to your business ciq.

I'm surprised CIQ is doing this when they likely are not at fault for most of the issues currently. It's more closely tied to HTC and sprint since they license to use the CIQ software and do with the info how they see fit.
Even more so it was shown that HTC modified their version a lot making it much less able to be turned off. That in itself is the main issue too. Allow an actual opt out and most if not all issues are gone. HTC/sprint chose not to so that and that's where most blame should be put between them two.

This is true. They did however make a patch for it to be removed. If you do remove it they give you the finger by making hboot 1.5.....I think....right?

I agree with this also, just didn't want to drag the thread off topic. This lawsuit by a company HTC is in bed with is the final nail in the coffin for me and HTC. I won't be buying another HTC product. And this phone was my third straight HTC.

CIQ probably feels like they are getting a bad rap. But they know what the software is capable of. They signed a contract with carriers. That contract could have had limitations on what ciq would be used for, but obviously the dollar signs in their eyes blinded them.
On the other hand, their software has security flaws. They should have tested it more thoroughly. Oh, wait.....that code is meant to be a backdoor data collector and key logger. Hmm. How do you patch a security hole in code that is made to be a security hole?
Ciq should be taking legal action against those that are using the code to the extent that the carriers are....unless that's what they contracted it out for (in which case they should just accept the well-deserved criticism and bow their heads in shame)

In an attempt to distance themselves from the increasingly volatile Carrier IQ situation, we’ve been told that Sprint has ordered that all of their hardware partners remove the Carrier IQ software from Sprint devices as soon as possible.
This comes after a number of dramatic turns over the past few weeks. During that time Carrier IQ was called a lot of things, from a harmless mobile intelligence company to a vicious rootkit designed to steal our personal data and sell it to the ne’er-do-wells. In my opinion, Carrier IQ is a company that provides a service that benefits everyone with a cellphone by giving information to the carriers about when their network has problems that affects our service. Unfortunately, this software was installed in such a manner that, when discovered, there was a significant panic. This is understandable because the software was forced onto unsuspecting users with no real oversight to speak of.
That panic was made worse when the company responded by trying to silence the person who discovered the software, instead of trying to explain what was actually happening. So here we sit, a month away from a Senate hearing on whether or not Carrier IQ is doing anything illegal, on top of a barrage of lawsuits against all of the companies involved.
Sources at HTC have told us that, as a result of the lawsuits targeting Carrier IQ, Sprint, and other CIQ-using OEMs, Sprint has asked all of their partners to get rid of Carrier IQ. Starting with the high-volume and high-profile devices on the network, each of the OEM’s has been asked to quickly release binaries that do not contain Carrier IQ so that over-the-air updates can be pushed to those devices as quickly as possible. The eventual plan is to remove Carrier IQ from all of the devices on Sprint’s network.
This is being done as soon as possible and, according to our source at HTC, anyone who is working with Sprint in testing labs have even had their vacation time over the holidays seriously restricted. No official rollout plan for these updates has been devised, but it has been made clear to everyone involved that this change needs to happen soon. I would assume that we will see updates for devices including the iPhone, HTC Evo 3D, and the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch before 2012.
At this time, Carrier IQ, Samsung, and Apple all refused to comment on any developments in this matter.
Some may view this as a classic “too little, too late” situation. Sprint waited until there were lawsuits to start removing Carrier IQ from their network, where previously they had been defending their use of the mobile intelligence service. This could possibly even be seen as an admission of guilt, as them removing the software in an attempt to make amends for what they have been caught doing.
Even so, Sprint could have just as easily made a public statement announcing that they were turning off the servers that collected the information, pending the results of the trial and the Senate inquiry. At that point a simple test from any of the security researchers that have gotten involved would confirm Sprint’s cancellation of CIQ and they wouldn’t have to involve every manufacturer on their network.

While this is nice and all the article seems to be lacking some knowledge in itself on some things. mainly the fact it included iPhone in the list of devices that would be getting updates. I'm pretty sure Apple commented on this long ago stating they do not use CarrierIQ in their devices anymore at all.
And I can't really see Sprint able to force Apple to load it on the device either...

I just had to laugh I mean Sprints network already sucks how could it possibly get worse. CarrierIQ is not going to fix 4G or even poor 3G speeds due to network congestion. They know they have a problem doubt they need an app to confirm it.

How the **** are they supposed to know what you want if you don't tell them? Or they could use ciq, see that 50% of people who have sense, use a different launcher and then rethink their approach. You guys are pathetic.

How are we pathetic..... Ciq is the one that is pathetic. They had the chance to explain what CIQ does but instead they try to silence TrevE. On top of that they install CIQ without even letting you know.
I understand that it's probably used to make phones and services better, but they should at least give you a disclaimer, an opt out option, and an explanation of what CIQ does and maybe then so many people wouldn't be angry at CIQ.
I think the *****ing and complaining is like he said...the fact they covered it up, tried to silence someone. Not that its probably bad software but bad business ethics. Agreed?

Oh please, its fine that you are ok with invasive measures that reduce your personal security, freedom, and privacy but criticizing other's opinions based on your lack of knowledge is crap. When your life is ruined because data isn't protected and you didn't authorize or get the choice in giving that info up I hope you remember your BS logic that the risk is fine and dandy because they were "trying" to gather data to improve things.
So naive, yeah they want to mine and transfer data to make your life better. Wrong, bottom line is the almighty dollar. They make millions doing what they do, they could give two ****s less about you and your experience

CIQ might have done the right thing collecting error logs on the phone to troubleshoot. But installing it on devices without user permission or any kind of disclosure of the software being install is just "unethical".
P.S. the reason why they are being sued was due to unethical practices.

LOL! When my life is ruined? They aren't stealing credit card and social security numbers, they are just reporting what apps and hardware is used during the day. Huge difference. Yeah, CIQ didn't do the right thing with the lawsuit, boo hoo life goes on.
You know people at your local bank track everything you do, have access to your credit cards and social security number. They can tell you where you've spent your money, what you bought, and all your personal information, yet nobody cries about that. But its a huge deal to report to Sprint that your playing angry birds at 1pm.

That's because by choosing the bank you opt into that, and go in knowing that they can track your money. And for the record they don't know what you bought, just that you spent so much money here and so much money there. The cc from the bank gets an amount taken not an itemization of funds spent per transaction. CIQ was added without knowledge, why can't you grasp the differences?

First of all I never said anything about personal info. I don't like how it was forced onto us without control. Second, just because they say (AFTER they were found out about) that their software does do anything with personal data doesn't mean it's true. The US Gov said there were weapons of mass destruction and we should go to war, there wasn't and we were there for oil only. Don't believe something especially when the company has their back against the wall trying to fish their way out.

About this movement:
Motorola Mobility Inc. has become famous for its lies, slanderous ways, and tendency to flat out prove time and time again that it cares not for its customers after they walk out of that store with their Motorola-branded device. Since the early days of Android, post Droid 1, we have sat down and took our locked bootloaders like a man. There came to be a boiling point - and a full-out war was launched on their social media sites. Sound familiar? The same thing that worked with HTC and now with Asus. We received a generic "second half of 2011" timing. Guess what! It's now Q1 2012, and not only have they missed their deadline, but they have IGNORED all bootloader-related questions, given NO official announcement of their plans still being in motion, and thus must have forgotten that we are a core, dedicated community that wishes nothing more than to enjoy the phones we were given. Let's make ourselves heard yet again, turn the heat up, and make Moto (like HTC) get off of their asses and DO SOMETHING. Everyone counts!

FIRST OFF, SIGN THE PETITION:
This is included in the email, so it is crucial that it continues to grow in number.
Then....
TRY CALLING VERIZON'S EXECUTIVES.
Make sure before calling that you are very informed about the issue and confident in your position, yet can be quite calm. Do not show any disrespect towards Marie H or the person you call. They are merely the (wo)man-in-the-middle, and you simply need to explain to them your position and back it up with facts. Also, do note that all times are EST.
Call Marie H. at (412) 266-7756 on Monday - Fridays, 8 am to 5 pm. OR Michelle at (803) 231-1787 on Monday - Fridays, 7 am to 4 pm. OR Call Verizon customer service at *611 or (800) 922-0204 and get to a rep by mashing 0.
This is something you cannot copy-paste, unfortunately. Here are some guidelines that should help you be successful in your endeavor:
- First off, if you get the voicemail, leave your name, number, and a time you can be contacted in case they wish to follow-up call.
- Mention that many are filing FCC complaints because this violates Block C guidelines. (Do research in case this is brought into question)
- Mention that HTC, Motorola, and Samsung have bootloader-unlockable devices on the network right now; (HTC has their 2011 devices, Moto has the Xoom, and Samsung the Galaxy Nexus)
- Mention that the bootloader being locked does not allow the device to do anything that a laptop that is using a 4G hotspot cannot do even faster/more efficiently, including hogging network resources.
- Mention that the bootloaders being FORCE locked (as in, not unlockable) does not offer protection from any present viruses or attacks of Android devices.
- Mention also that unlocking the bootloaders could very well use a system like HTC uses - which stores the IMEI of the device and voids its software warranty indefinitely, making Verizon's warranty services not liable for what a user installs on their device.
- Close your talk/voicemail by stating the number of signatures on the petition, currently well over 2,500, and saying that this is a widespread concern of many users, that wish Android to be truly open.
- Say thank you before you hang up, it'll really give off a good impression.

Select Wireless Telephone > Billing, Service, Privacy, Number Portability and other issues > Online Form. Fill out your information, scroll down, fill out 1 and 2, skip 3 and 4. Then in 5:
- Tell the FCC that your phone’s bootloader was sold to you locked, preventing the regulatory requirement of BLOCK C Devices (MAKE SURE TO MENTION BLOCK C!!!) that "Consumers should be able to download and utilize any software applications, content, or services they desire" - make sure to cite that.
- Also helpful would be dispelling the "Reasonable network management" exclusion. Tell the FCC that Verizon allows tethering of unauthorized devices to 4G LTE services through their mobile hotspots and their paid phone tethering functionality as-is, ones that are more bandwidth-hungry and also permit installing custom operating systems, and have a potential of doing significantly more damage, such as laptops.
If you don't want to write yours up manually, we will have a pre-made step 5 that you can just copy paste soon, hopefully.

However, the "second half" of 2011 has come and gone quietly; why is it that the public has received no notice that the bootloader unlock solution is still in works? In an effort to get better coverage, I would suggest crossposting to as many Android forums outside XDA as possible. Most definitely, send it to Android Police. It could be worth a shot. While I understand different folks have preferences as to what forums they frequent, getting the word out is paramount.

I'd like to think this will work if we get it out there enough. It's the customers vs. the company, I can't think of anybody who would want it stay locked except for those people who are like "oh but then it'll just be easier for people to screw up."

I'd even post on the unlocked ones. Many people would help the cause. They could write how much they benefit from their phone with an unlocked bootloader. I even bet a significant number of the larger Android community would assist because we all have the same end game in mind.
This thread is great. I was just thinking yesterday of collecting the various resources to petition Motorola. You made everything very clear and we thank you. SPREAD THE WORD!! and, most importantly, ACT ON IT PEOPLE!!
Now we need a script to auto-tweet, auto-email, and auto-flame Motorola AND Verizon.

i just sent out an email to the addresses that were listed by the OP, lets see how long they can ignore the emails from the customers and ignore the petition. I hope they don't send back a generic email that states that they're "working" on it. If the dx2 is a "closet" device then maybe we can gain at least the key to unlock and we'd be gaining our pudding.
Being a recent HTC convert and former X2 owner, I can say that this could really work. We got our Rezound unlocked. This needs to get out there. You'd be surprised how powerful this can be if enough people here on XDA start making noise. Thanks, OP, for posting this. Good luck!
Can we organize a time to CALL motorola? I think clogging up their phone lines for a couple of hours may be more effective than jamming their inboxes with easily deleted emails. If we could get even 100 people to just call at the same time, we could be HIGHLY effective.
We could all also call the phone number listed in post number 96 of the similar thread in the RAZR forum. I think that if we politely annoy enough people things can get better.

I signed the petition.
I posted in the Motorola X2 forums that HTC has already unlocked their bootloaders within the United States, and that the X2 will be my last Motorola phone if they do not go through with their statement they released to unlock the bootloaders.
I sent an email (not nasty, but to-the-point) in the same vein as my post in their forums.
Remember, people. Do NOT be nasty about it: no name calling, no cursing, etc. Just state that you feel they should unlock the bootloader, especially since HTC has done it. I went as far as to suggest they contact HTC to see how they got Verizon and AT&T to allow this. Then, state that you won't be purchasing any more Motorola phones if they do not move forward with this. I was being kinder and stated that we, as customers, deserve an answer from them one way or another (whether they will unlock the phones or not). If they choose not to unlock the phones nor give an answer, the X2 was going to be my last Motorola phone.
It wasn't nasty, it was to the point and it was with tact. That's what we need, not a lot of flaming, etc. That won't get you anywhere and they'll just ignore it and treat it as if it were from some child or teenager, which is what I would do with it as well.
BTW, just read this excellent article on Droid Life. Pretty damning against Motorola if you ask me!

BTW, this has to be the 3rd or 4th "article" I've seen today about this. I think it's picking up steam. Now, whether Moto decides to listen and take action is another thing.

I believe that we should have this posted on every phones forum because it's not just for us that it will benefit but it would benefit everyone and for me I wouldn't have to wait on a phone to see if it's dev friendly or just another red headed step child.

MIUI Android discovered a key logger on MIUI.us. You can read about it on Twitter. MIUI Android contacted MIUI.us' dev but things got ugly afterwards.

I don't know if I'm doing it right, this is my first thread here. I just want you guys know about the situation.
The name of the .apk in question is LatinIME. I don't know if any of the MIUI ROMS ports for our phone has that .apk.

Hmm that apk is on my old Moto Backflip that's running a "stock" CM7. The MIUI one must be a hack. Don't go deleting it just yet unless you're running the rom in question. I believe its for the keyboard or language settings but not 100% sure.
Edit: its also on my stock GS2. Didn't think to check it earlier but estxxas already told you what it was for below...

Craziness. I'm appalled my the immaturity of the situation and how the devs handled it. I browsed through the tweets to figure out what was actually going on and it looked like freaking world war 3. I am not going to assume anything or accuse someone of malicious behavior because for all I know there could be a legitimate reason for those lines of code. Last I gathered from the flames was confirmation that the logger was not sending any data to anyone
It's sad to see such discourse among Android developers.
On the other hand this goes to demonstrate how vulnerable smartphones are to hackers and cybercrime. More development needs to go into mobile information security. People just don't understand how serious security is. How often does it cross your mind that your data may not be safe on your mobile phone. Why do you think it takes so long for official firmware to be released? The carriers want to make sure that the firmware is secure and stable before it goes public.

I am shocked by the maturity level displayed on the MIUIAndroid twitter as well as in the IRC logs&various conversations posted. That is one developer I would never trust running a ROM from. The person running the team is one very disgusting person.

Do me a favor, do not give the OP any thanks for this post. This type of **** is FUD (look it up). The whole situation was due to a lack of knowledge about the classes in LatinIME. You can find the code from the CM git repo commit here.
It should have been discovered that this was not a key logger from the beginning. Instead it was blown up to proportions that it never should have been. Stop posting this crap, please.
P.S. the words logger + dropbox do not make for a key logger. Those "investigating" this should have looked into the code rather than spread rumors and false information. Oh and without android.permission.INTERNET in AndroidManifest.xml, this information goes nowhere.

I call bull****. I bet you installed some third party app and honestly do not know what could have caused those supposed charges. Statements like this, without any evidence to back it up, is what makes the android community look bad. Spreading lies, rumors, and fallacies such as this is just plain sad.

I'm not worried, I'm sure the mod community will come up with a solution for us, but I'd hate to lose the scribe functionality, is anyone clued up enough to suggest if developers are going to be able to retain that?

Yeah the one where Google tried to force all the vendors to support with updates for 18 months. No vendor would sign up to that, so they inserted this escape clause in the agreement. 18 months IF THE DEVICE IS COMPATIBLE with the update.

Incompatible with ICS..that is complete bulls***..we had a very similar response from Samsung when we asked for GB update for Galaxy 3 (my current phone). Thanks to a very active developer community here on XDA, we have not only multiple GB ROMs (including CM 7.2) but also ICS now..hope something similar happens to Flyer..screw HTC!

Isn't the HTC one v basically the same hardware minus the front camera and half the ram? Their excuse doesn't fly. Either way this csr doesn't know anything anyway.

Even if the CSR knows nothing, what's been said before still applies. If HTC considered updating the Flyer to ICS, we would have seen leaked ROMs or at lease some leaked shots or videos of the device running it.
That being said, I highly doubt HTC plans any updates for us.

Actually, that's not quite true. While they may not be part of the decision-making process, someone in HTC management drafted a response for the reps communicating with customers. This is the information that has been approved to share outside the company by this person. Someone is Legal or PR may have more information, but techs and CSRs only have what management gives them.

I would guess this verbage came from HTC corporate because

It doesn't matter anyway, any update we get will just be slow, laggy, and buggy. It would be nice for developers but then again the hc update was so bad developers couldn't fix it either so yeah it doesn't matter.
Anyway I say the csr doesn't know what he's talking about because this is the third different thing they've said recently. They told me on Facebook that they are still evaluating, they told another member August, and they told the op its not compatible. Who's actually giving the right answer?

A honeycomb minor upgrade for the current bugs would be much better and more probable if many users mention the GPS issue since it's important. This update might bring other minor bugs if demanded a fix for the Current honeycomb.

I think it would be the better option. An ics update would just be rushed and buggy. Fixing honeycomb would do more good. It's more than just Gps, honeycomb runs slower, and uses more battery. I don't care about hardware buttons though, honeycomb isn't designed to use them anyway and I prefer the virtual buttons as they are better placed.
