I imagine that a lot of folks here are familiar with overclocking utilities such as SetCPU.
I installed SetCPU on my rooted SGH-1747, it installs fine, however it won't adjust the CPU frequency under the "Main" tab. My understanding (I'm new to overclocking) is that you need a custom kernel installed, these guys (first Google link for "overclock galaxy s3") talk about one for the i9300 version, however I can't find any information about the American version of the phone.
Has anyone tried to OC the SGH-1747 or know what is required. Thanks!
Quickclock, check it out, run the tests in the app. It will find Max and min voltage and frequency. Good luck.
This should work on a stock (rooted) phone. Worked perfectly on my DX with root.

You need a kernel that supports overclocking the processor.

I only know of one for the U.S. variant of the Galaxy S III.
BUT it is supported for T-Mobile. Not sure if it works on AT&T. You can browse through the replies and see if anyone has gotten it to work but I don't advise you to flash this until it would be officially supported for AT&T's model.
I am looking into purchasing the SGP 4.2 as a means for very portable entertainment. I had the 4.0 and loved it - I must say I miss it a lot, haha. It went everywhere with me. I am loving the new look of the 4.2 version and would like to know if any of you are using this version and what your thoughts are. Aside from looks and what appears to be a slightly lower resolution camera, are there any major differences as far as performance could be concerned?

Go to the all in one thread found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720457 and you'll find all the spec vs spec differencces. Stock vs Stock it's a toss up. On quadrant the 4.2 has between a score 1700-1800 where as the 4.0 has a score between 1200-1300. This is probably because they fixed the I/O performance on the 4.2 or used .ext4. On my rom and kernel I use .ext4 and without overclocking I got between 2100-2200. On Antutu however, it flips the 4.2 scores between 2600-2800 and the 4.0 scores between 2900-3100. I believe that the 4.2 is also currently awaiting to be rooted so there are no custom roms yet where as the 4.0 some.

Thanks for sharing the link! Hope I didn't post something that was out of place. Just looking for reviews from anyone that has the 4.2 - their thoughts on it and the performance. Have been seeing some 'not so great' talk from people that have it and the complete opposite, lol. Thanks again

You posted in the correct place. For reviews I go to youtube. Here's some if you haven't seen them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2oJpF9H25Y , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLLnXUKvNss, and the review that I think best captures the 3.6 and 4.2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu3p1b74--o ( suggest subscribing to her because she makes long and detailed reviews most are 10-20 minutes long lol)
Hi all,
I'm sort of new here, so I hope I'm abiding by all the rules... I believe I am
I've only recently rooted my Samsung Galaxy S3 (international) and have been using Omega for a while now and I'm running 33.3 atm. So not the one based on CM10, but the one based on the stock rom.
I've now reached a point where I'm feeling that I've been there and done that. So I'd like to try a new fresh solution. I've been looking at CM10 and ParanoidAndroid, as these seem to have the largest user base, based on the number of posts here in XDA Developers forums in their threads. However I'm unsure if either of these are right for me.
I believe I read about CM10 having added a feature where you inside the OS could search for and download new versions directly on the phone, like you can with new software on iOS. Is this possible on both CM10 and ParanoidAndroid?
I'm looking for something that is both rock stable and yet constantly adds new gizmos and features, so I have something to play with. I'd like for it to be very easy for me to upgrade to newer versions. On Omega you downloaded via torrents, transferred to the SD card and then just rebooted into CWM and installed from zip. It automatically wiped cache, dalvik and such. So you didn't really have to do much yourself. But if CM10 could do it evern better and also download directly to the Phone, then that's a big plus for me.
I'm also a bit curious about why people change so much stuff on their phones. I often hear people talk about different kernels. From what I understand the kernel is sort of the drivers that bridges the gap between the OS and the hardware. Why is this so important? On Omega the default seemed to work perfectly... so what do you actually get by swapping? if the answer is 0.5% extra batterylife, then that's just not enough for me.

CM10 builds are nightlies, and PA is based off of CM10. So if you want rock stable - go stock

Well first of all, kernel is not only your "drivers". It manages your governors, your I/O schedulers, CPU freq etc. That means when you are flashing a new kernel you are either looking for some improvements in responsiveness of the device, deep-sleep state improvements, WiFi patches (muticast f.e.), modules (like mali gpu), ko's (lets say for xbox controller or openvpn support), better RAM management OR you simply wanna sound smart to your friends :cyclops:
There are couple of articles you should take a look by droidphile, first one is Kernel Stuff and the second one is Governors, Modules, etc
Regarding the ROM, it pretty much depends on what you would like to do with it. If you wanna have working radio, call recording, "smart stay" and other things which are specific to TW based ROM's than you should stick with Samsung TW based ones.
CM is awesome! Very clean and nice experience. Couple of glitches here and there but no deal breaker.
PA is my daily driver. I'm very happy with it and I can't recommend enough. Highly customizable, tons of options, custom led lights, different DPI settings for each app, different layouts, on screen nav bar so on and so forth.
Although PA is based off of CM they are now migrating to AOSP. The main difference between them is code bloat. CM has own settings and codes to support them, which makes it a little bit slower than AOSP but that doesn't mean its worst.
You should start experimenting and see for yourself. XDA is full of information and although the search function is not working for the moment it will work and you can find all your answers.

Thanks a lot for your answer, I greatly appreciate it
I haven't been keeping up to date with all the roms/kernels out there for my S5 as I've been stock+root since I got the phone, but lately have been running into some flaky issues with staying connected and weird power drains, so it's about time to start fresh with a build that has all the latest patches applied to it in addition one with less bloat. TMobile has been pretty good about keeping the bloat down, but there's still some things that could go away.
So overall, what would you guys recommend for good battery life, stability, smoothness, and some cool customization options? I don't need to overclock or anything, those days are long gone as the phones are fast enough as-is, so overclocking or some advance kernel tweaking is not needed. CPU governors, battery options, etc are always welcome additions to any kernel though.
So what are your recommendations, and thanks in advance.
I'm in the same boat. Am setting up an S5 for a relative. There's no root for 5.1.1 yet, and 5.0 seems to be weak on battery vs. 4.4.2? Might simply be the reversion to a predominantly white theme vs. 4.4.2's black in TW. Also, the latest 4.4.2, NK2, doesn't seem well represented in custom ROMs. The Sickness has a 4.4.2 NH5 ROM, but that's one iteration behind NK2, and the theme-ing leaves a lot to be desired for those looking for a little more stock-ish appearance. Might end up using that until some 5.1.1 customs with root come along and try to find a way to re-theme it.

Looks like it may run on LP ROMs. Didn't tried yet.
That looks really interesting. Might be the reason I've been waiting for to upgrade to 5.1

Not installing on my LP unit running @dsa8310 October ROM. Starts the installation and after a few seconds - App not installed. At first I thought it's location-based but installed OK on my Samsung phone (Marshmallow)

i think you installed the arm64 version. You need the arm version. Mine is working. Make sure you installed the google app and google play music app before installing. Normally android auto is installing this in its installation, but than it goes in a loop (in mine case). So install them first.
For the rest android auto is slow, because it's using google maps, which is slow in the android 5.1 version. Spotify is working fine btw.
I'm working for a MAnufacture which produces HU for cars. Right now there is a native Android System for cars in discussion.

I installed this on my Joying RK3188 running the latest Malaysk 5.1.1 ROM. Unfortunately, the ROM itself is so slow, Android Auto is almost unusuable. It does work, mind you, but the ROM seems to be the problem. Anyone know any bare-bones 5.1.1 ROMs that run quick? Thanks.

It's not exactly the ROM. It's the combination Google Maps + Google Now + Android Auto. I tried it on a clean ROM with only root and pretty much everything removed and it's unusable.
I also noticed that a 5.1 ROM will run OK as long as you only have either Google Maps or Google Now. When you have both it's barely working.

Don't know if it is only RAM related. These units have very poor CPU profile - throttling. stepup clock control settings which use highest clock only rarely so most of the time CPU is running slow so many processes suffer especially when multiple apps are running in background.
I'm not using 5.1 ROM (as I see still issues and people complaining) so I cannot test if and what apps mix causes issues.
You may try some kernel tools for testing different governors, CPU throttling (yes I would try also thermal throttling if you want to be on the safe side as rumours are Chinese used above mentioned downclocked setup in order to save CPU from overheating as there is no heat sink).
It would be interesting to open new thread for this. Much improvements may be achieved only by tuning kernel. And that needs some experimenting and practising.
Also, regarding 5.1 it is well known that it is 'heavy' and one of the main points of 6 (MM) was to reduce resource usage. So instead jumping to LP and having resource issues, I'll wait to see if there will be progress on MM which may resolve much of the problems around.

I agree. From monitoring resource usage under 5.1 I have to say that while RAM usage will rarely go over 700 MB CPU is aggressively downclocked. However, I need to first add a heatsink and then play with governors.
However, not sure how much would that really help with Android Auto, it's so damn slow it takes like 20 seconds just to start

Heatsink issue is to be investigated also. For instance many phones do not have heatsinks and still endure very heavy usage. So it may be not necessary. For instance, thermal throttling may be sufficient.
Thus, both governor and thermal control should be investigated. I believe it is possible with little effort to tune these units to work very nicely without much hw poking.
SW in these units is just so bad and poor it is almost unbelievable! Beside designers didn't have basic knowledge on architecture, they even 'tuned' many things in just opposite of what is needed. They could have better situation if only leaves everything by default in AOSP
