Help ota update - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

(searched and couldn't find answer so plz don't flame)
Hi I'm new to the forums but I've been lurking here for a while...soon after I got my atrix one of my buddies "hooked" it up for me by adding all these apps and what not to help me transition over from iOS well from what I'm finding out is apparently he rooted it also because when I went to OTA update it downloaded and installed everything correctly until it automatically rebooted and stuck me with a black screen saying failed to boot 2 starting rsd mode where it just hangs until I restart it which gives me probably 30 seconds to a min of on time before it automatically reboots and hangs.
I got up with my friend briefly and he said to go into recovery...well I've tried that also with no success so if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it
motorola atrix 4.1.83
at&t
he said gingerbreak was the method used to root it
any other info needed?

mods if this is in the wrong thread or something please move it but if not someone please link a thread or something because I'm having no luck with solutionns I've found and my atrix is a few minutes from being thrown against the wall

get rsd lite and find the 4.1.83 sbf (install) file and use it. lots of threads with that info.

he might just get a pudding inserted 2.3.4 stock rom and thats it, so it wont burn hsi bootloader yet he will be on stock 2.3.4, but probably youll want to get rooted again, so you might jsut get one that is prerooted: from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138204
you might do a short read from here aswell: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
i do not suggest you unlock your phone i just suggest you dont flash the OTA, since it makes it harder for you to go back to 2.2 if you might not like 2.3

thanks for your help it worked. Sorta freaked and yes there was a previous thread but I didn't know what to dl thanks for the help again

Failed to boot 4 Solution Needed

So i've been searching for a solution for the past four days for this
HTML:
"Failed to boot 4" error
I'd like an explanation or help, please don't post links from other XDA posts because they were dead ends.
Here is a video of whats happening, you'll see that I can not boot into fastboot or anything either but RSD.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyBKyZYVYDM
UPDATE: 1
I think i may of found something but if you have other solutions, do share them!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065740
Will it bring moto screen up? Can you get in fastboot? Or rsd sounds like something didn't get along with what you had installed. You may be able yo fastboot 2.3.4 and get on gingerbread I think I have soft bricked my phone 3 times
Atrix - gingerbread 2.3.4 rooted with XDA premium application.
1. This does not boot to the Moto bootup screen
2. When I start up the Atrix, I can't get into the Fastboot or options for that matter. Its just RSD. I've attached a youtube video of my phone. Please check it out.

tktino,
Had the same problem today. I was following the instruction to get GB on my phone when it happened. With your post I was able to flash back to 1.5.7 and now have GB on my phone. Thanks!
Well if you can get into rsd then flash rsd UNLESS you have the STOCK OTA gingerbread but if you had 1.8.3 ort 1.5.7 or 1.2.6 you can reflash 1.2.6 to fix it.
Why this happen? not really sure never had that code.

And if you have stock OTA GB? Then what? As I understand it you still flash with rsdlite only difference is you use the 2.3.4-4.5.91 sbf.
I am at this very cross road now. I tried to flash the webtop V1 and it bricked my phone. I did not realize there was a V2 link at XDA within broke URL tags. I glossed over it I guess. Now I'm left with a brick again. I saved myself from a brick trying to get webtop last night, but this time I don't think it's possible. Something with that Webtop V1 is no good. Without looking through each line of the *.sh files I'm unable to say what they broke. I'm interested in doing the V2 though because preGB I really did use the webtop over HDMI a lot. Now I don't have it and the process to get it has become super complicated by way of way too much "noise". Threads where there is decent information are muddied up by poor English and difficult to understand instructions. Perfect example from the webtop hack thread for 4.5.91:
"Requirements:
Have one of the supported build and functional webtop flashed
Be rooted
Be able to work with adb"
The first line is really confusing. The root and adb knowledge makes sense. But what the hell does the first line really mean? Supported build and functional webtop flashed?? How frustrating. How about listing the supported builds, then explaining in detail how you go about getting a "function webtop flashed". Because as far as I knew I was in the thread to get a functional webtop flashed. I feel like I'm kicking myself in my own ass.
another thing...
It would also be nice if they removed software like the Webtop V1 where it can brick your phone and fixed the link to V2 if that one even works.
Trying factory data reset............
I figured out that v1 was failing to remove or rename the odex files. Once I manually renamed them, webtop mod over hdmi worked.

[Q] bricked once..let's not do it again. 4.1.83 @ 2.2.2

I bricked one Atrix already a few weeks ago, and have since gotten another...(don't wanna think about it)..
I had toyed with unlocking it, and 'rooted' using the gingerbreak method. I was then, bored, one day and installed CWM paid version(Since I had it on my Nexus One, and it popped up under 'my apps'). Out of curiosity I installed the bootloader via CWM, thinking it would fail before it broke anything..wrong.. It froze after a reboot, but after taking the battery out and back in came back up. Didn't think any more about it, and figured i'd finish the unlocking/flashing part some other time..
Meanwhile the annoying pending system update kept going off, and I inadvertently clicked download... it downloaded, so I figured might as well install and not worry about roms since with root I was able to use the google adhoc wifi apk, which is what I care about most. The install was stuck in an infinite loop. It would 'fail to load RSD', if you took the battery out it boot to android then reboot automatically for system update over and over. I tried using the RSD lite program at this point to flash back to stock rom, and ended up hard bricked...
So, forgive me for being a complete noob as I never had an issue with my nexus one. I am at 4.1.83, android 2.2.2. and baseband 1.7.15.. Which of the many tutorials and post should I follow? How safe are they? Did I brick because I had a partial 2.3.x install, and flashed back to a pre 2.3 base? I've read many post, but definitely a bit gun shy of bricking another Atrix. The phone keeps bugging me to update, and I keep hitting 'cancel'.
I'd like to unlock the boot loader for custom roms.
I'm also a heavy linux user, majority of tutorials seem to only imply windows with RSD lite? can this not be done with adb, and fastboot via linux?

I would personally go HERE Read through the entire post, then read it again. And go with the ATT 2.3.4 pudding+root
That of course is after reading and re-reading THIS post! (also linked in the post above mine.
Just my opinion.. and make sure you read and nkow what to expect!

That references 4.5.91 and unless I missed it, doesn't explicitly state it's backwards compatible with 4.1.83 and 2.2.2. is it?
Should I update first, to be at those levels and just know not to flash to an earlier build(pre 2.3.4/4.5.91)?

Nope, don't update. It's safer to unlock BL while you are still at 4.1.83, you just need to download the correct unlock file from the pudding thread.
Otherwise the unlocking steps are exactly the same.
The easiest steps to unlocking are here:
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
From there you can flash CWM in one minute.
From there you can flash any rom via CWM in two minutes.
Good luck and don't do anything stupid.

Bricked Atrix 4G 4.2.11.mb860.retail.en.fr

Hey I got this phone and it had the "version 4.2.11.mb860.retail.en.fr" and I tried to unlock the bootloader and tried to install gingerbread which is given in the motorola site.None worked for me, so what happened was I couldn't do any,and then I installed the clockworkmod with the wall charger and I searched that if something would go wrong with it cause I felt it kinda risky and I searched it again but in instructions and in some other forums said can install a custom rom. so I backed up everything and installed the cherry rom which i can find easily in the development forum, then after that I get this error msg at the boot screen "Failed to boot 2" "Starting RSD mode" so I downloaded the "Atrix 4G - US MB860" "Version: 4.5.91" 2.3.4 and downloaded the RSD lite application for windows 7 and tried flashing this software and at 100% it fails and fails. I don't know what I should do.and I'm downloading another froyo sbf file to reflash the system, I wish someone can help me over here and I really appreciate it. :|
You need to flash an sbf that fits with your phone!
You tried too much at once. Do some more research before you try anything again.

^This. People don't realize that flashing ROMS, custom kernels, unlocking, all this stuff is going to be risky. This is not for people who have little to no knowledge of how to do this stuff. If you ARE just starting out, like all of us are at some point, READ read READ. Search multiple articles and multiple sources before attempting anything and if you're not sure if you should do it, don't. Unless you have the money to spare to replace a bricked phone. When I took the plunge into the custom ROM scene, it was a new experience for me. But I made sure to follow instructions to the LETTER and have been fixing / working with computers for over a decade so experience does help a bit. Remember, the search button is yer friend and it will help you out when you're looking for more information on a topic.
Oh okay you don't have to say these things, I know that I'm a noob and I'm just living in china and I just only wanted to install gingerbread and here we go I can't flash and I just need help on this and yea I am still searching for this, I'm glad if you can help me out.
So I'm guessing there's no way to get gingerbread for this particular built.
I've this too Version.4.2.11.MB860.Retail.en.FR

[Q] Help reroot dx2

Please bear with me
OK I have a rooted Dx2 ver. 2.3.3 i need to send in my Dx2 for replacement but Verizon told me they won't unless i have the current vers. of GB 2.3.4.
To unroot there is an app in the market that will remove it completely, including all the symbolic links, its called Ginger Unroot.
Ginger Unroot did the trick, i re-installed all the bloat ran Ginger Unroot, but i missed unfreezing 2 files i think they were "update" and "updater".
So when i went to settings - about phone - System Updates, but it does not work.
So i screwed up now i just want to root the phone and if the files are still there, unfreeze the the 2 files and unroot again and d/l the 2.3.4 OTA.
Here's where i really need help i was going to use Gingerbreak to root but i found out it is no longer supported i think it is because i'm running 2.3.3
I have been searching for days on what to do and all i have found out there does not appear that a one click root does not exist.
I have heard that i might have to SBF back to froyo??
Can i do it on a mac?
i'm worried that i will need to do it on a pc.
Also what version of windows do i need to use?
If i have to SBF can i d/l the files and go to an internet cafe or kinkos and use a pc to do this?
Here's an example are the drivers for the phone or are they meant to be run on a pc, would an internet cafe or kinkos let me do this installing software on their computers.
*Install the necessary moto drivers*
* Motorola_End_User_Driver_Installation_5.1.0 32bit or 64bit depending on your computer's CPU architecture
First do you know if i do gain root again will the 2 files show up or have they been
deleted, gone forever.
If this is the only way, can someone tell me exactly what i need to do. I don't want to try to follow any posts because if im at a kinkos or someplace i can access a pc. i don't want to wind up getting stuck or not understanding something.
If i can get to a pc i see that you need to use terminal commands, if i have to do it that way i'll be lost and screw up something.
Please help i don't want to get to a place that i might not fully understand
In other words a Dumbed down set of instructions.
I'm not knocking forums but because of my disability i get lost and frustrated with all the info you can find. I really need to get any help from one person, i get very confused easly
Which method do you recommend/easies: It seems Wugfresh has a one click vers. which is still confusing. I have come across other posts on how to reroot which is making it nearly impossible to follow.
I have ADD and i'm ready to give up and hope i can tell Verizon it won't update and won't discover the 2 missing files, do you think if i just tell them it won't update, and having removed any signs of it was rooted, do you think i can get away with this "playing dumb" cus so far over the past 2 weeks i have gotten responses from my posts that don't help, i just get told to "see this post" and tell me to try this or that.

I am really burned out, please tell me what you recommend.
To be frank i would just like to return it as is, do you think i can get away with this?
Thanks

Doing an sbf is probably going to be your best bet. Check stickies there should be info on sbfing on a Mac.
This thread on rootzwiki may have some useful info for you.

A sbf will solve your problems and I believe it can work with any software mine is vista. Go to the development section first post from booked and he has all the files you need. Use Pete's one click root very easy. Don't give up you will just have to read some.
Hey there! Welcome in! Got to my tutorial thread here: HowTo: Perform a SBF ("factory restore") of your Motorola Droid X2. This will walk you through, step by step, how to perform an SBF restore. If you have questions, either post them in that thread, or PM me. It's simple and straight forward.

Problem while attempting bootloader unlock

I have a relatively untouched Atrix, prior to the update that Motorola put out months ago all I did is what I needed to remove the factory installed Swype and install the Swype Beta.
A few nights ago I was following a guide (can't seem to find which one it was) to install CyanogenMod and I was attempting to flash Pudding to my phone through RSD Lite per the instructions and from what I think I have soft bricked my phone.
The screen is showing the failed to boot screen with the menu options. From what I've read I can flash it back to stock if I find the right sbf file but I only get one shot at this.
I only realized after screwing up that I joined a long list of people who didn't do enough research before starting. Would anyone be so kind as to help me get my phone working again? :good:
