So, I tried to load Gingerbread and now all I hear now is Linda's annoying voice before it goes to a Kernel Panic.
I have tried using ODIN and Heimdall with no success.
Heimdall just returns a "fail" after about 4 seconds.
Odin3 1.7 returns a "SetupConnection..." and never proceeds.
Some notes to add as I feel these will answer most initial questions.
I am in Download mode (android character digging)
I made sure I had the drivers that came with Heimdall installed when tryign heimdall, and when using ODIN I had the Samsung Galaxy S drivers installed.
I have tried this on multiple computers with the same results.
First w/ a Windows 7 64-bit and the second was a Windows XP 32-bit
Any ideas why it is hanging up?
Any ideas what to try next?
All input is greatly appreciated and I just want to thank anyone who responds in advance for their advice.

for odin:
Reinstall the SAMSUNG DRIVERS (it works sometimes)
Use a DIFFERENT version of the ODIN program, this works for most people.
And via Ubuntu you don't need specifics drivers i think. Let me know.

Why would you hear Linda?
You never got to flash Gingerbread I'm guessing.
Go into download mode and try connecting to Odin. Pull the plug, then battery. Pop it back in and you should see a phone!pc icon. Plug in the USB and maybe Odin will recognize it.
This has worked for me before when Odin wouldn't recognize my device.
1. how do you flash gb or which rom did you flash? the cm7 or beta from whitehawk?
2. what kernel did you flash for cm7?

I will setup a VM with Ubuntu and give it a shot. Do you have any download links for the software for Ubuntu?

So, I did install Gingerbread, and I must have messed something up. I was upgrading from Eugene's Unofficial Froyo release. I downloaded the beta from whitehawk, put it on my sdcard, went into recover mode and attempted to install after backing up. After the rainbow screen I got a Kernel Panic screen, waited about 20 minutes just to see what would happen, naturally nothing. I restarted the phone. I get the Vibrant logo, then rainbows, annoying Linda's voice then the Kernel Panic Upload Mode. My assumption is the mistake I made was not having the right kernel, but now its a matter of trying to recover the phone.
Ok, I got it working, really I am not sure how. I was reading on another Galaxy S they use the home button get into download mode. Out of desperation I tried it, while the download mode didn't look any different it responded to ODIN and worked. It could have just been coincidence but whatever it worked. Thanks for all the support and I got Gingerbread in now.

How do I do this? People just say use odin. But do I need to make sure what i exactly need to do I dont want to brick my phone. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Have Odin ready.
Get the jfd file and pit from JACs thread it is in the Bible in the sticky on the development section. Once you go back to stock you will be able to root and go to a custom rom or upgrade it through kies mini

So I dont need nexus S usb drivers?
If you've never connected the device to your PC and your PC doesn't recognize your device then yes you will need them.
I run Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and I didn't have to download them for some reason, PC recognized my phone and downloaded drivers on it's own. Can't say the same for other versions though.
Just in case here is the link to drivers.

Just make sure when your in download mode and connected that odin says com: then some number...
Thanks for the replies. Ive used Odin before but I remembered seeing someone say you needed different drivers but it seems to be working. Thanks again!

Well Im back at stock so all is well.
Does anyone here hate ODIN as much as I do for the SGS2? For me, it keeps on freezing on this screen, not pushing the kernel to the phone. I have to unplug and plug it in like 50 billion times, hoping that it'll work. I've tried uninstalling drivers and then installing the latest 1.5.15.0 ones, like I always do. No luck. Tried different USB ports. No luck either.
I should also add that this problem occurs with ALL 3 SGS2 that I have. So it's definitely not a dead phone or anything like that, unless I have really bad luck and all 3 phones just suck when it comes to using them with ODIN.
I tried using ODIN on another computer. No go. Redownloaded ODIN. No go. So what gives? Anyone got a clue?
Cant you use mobile odin instead.Ive not had freezing while using Odin before, but once I kept getting fail a few times........then I noticed I had it plugged in NOT in download mode lol.
If It's not in Download mode, I shouldn't be able to connect it in the first place. but yes it is in Download mode.

Well its not useless as in many occasions people have had same problem as you and only solved it by installing kies.
Check that kies can connect to device, if not run the troubleshooting app and it will automatically check drivers etc.
R: ODIN Never Works!!! Help
Are you sure that you have correct Samsung drivers installed and kies switched off with task manager?
My steps for use odin:
Uninstall odin
Uninstall kies
Uninstall Samsung drivers
Restart pc
Install kies (latest)
Connect the phone and let kies install the drivers
Disconnect the phone
Kill kies (you can Uninstall it, but not the drivers)
Install odin
Every thing must work

I don't install Kies. I just install the Samsung USB drivers that I get here from XDA. See I tried with Siyah kernel just now and it worked. Dorimanx tar files didn't work. It could be the TAR file, but it worked in the past so I don't even know what to say..
Install Kies god damn it! At least you get a nice looking logo

You have to connect the phone to Kies to install these drivers. You just have to make sure that you Odin and Kies never run at the same time.

Hi guys,
I'm very new here and also a noob when it comes to rooting and flashing custom ROMS. I was following the instructions of Archidroid in installing his CustomROm Archidroid. The instructions are easy to understand and very helpful. I was able to download his ROM and put it to my externalSDcard as recommended. I downloaded the lates Odin and Philztouchrecovery as instructed and put it on the PDA field. Then I was successful in putting my phone to download mode. Now here's the problem after I replugged my phone to my computer, nothing happened! "<ID:0/003> Added!!". >>This message did not appear on the message box of Odin. The last message from Odin is leave CS mode. What am I doing wrong?? My phone is the Galaxy S3-GT-I9300. And it hasn't been rooted yet. If there's already a thread about this please let me know so I can get to it, I tried searching but I can't find the answers that I need here. Please help!

Have tried all three USB ports in my laptop but still the same and yes, I am in download mode. One thing I can add and I don't know if it has anything to do with it is, on the top left the custom binary is a NO. I'm really new at this. One more question if my phone is being recognized by laptop when I plug it in like it appears as a portable device on My Computer it means that the USB drivers are installed and correct, right?

custom binary has nothing to do here buddy. first you need to root the phone using CF-ROOT method. and flash the philz recovery.zip from CWM recovery that comes after flashing with CF-ROOT. later you will be able to flash any custom rom through philz recovery.
step1: open odin
step2: put phone in download mode(volume down+home+power)
step3: connect phone via usb
step4: odin recognizes the phone
step5: cf-root and the following methods stated at the beginning

yes you need to. also try restarting your laptop.
Sounds more like no drivers installed. Try installing kies to get the drivers and then ensure it's not running in the background. That should solve your problem.

You're all correct!! Its the drivers! Thanks so much guys!
I Think Its time to make a thread after 3 weeks of searching for fixes.
Okay, so I flashed this ROM 'Extrimis Rom'. It worked. 2 days using. After that, I flashed CM7.2 slim. Worked, No errors, Then ai plugged my Phone to my Laptop, It says USB not recognized. I Cant even flash stock using Odin.
Fixes Tried:
Pull the Battery before Odin.
Install/Update Kies
Tried several PCs with Kies and Adb drivers
Flashed System multi formatter.
I really need to fix this, else I wont be able to flash CM11, coz it needs Odin to go back to stock rfs.

If you tried reinstalling drivers then do wipe data /cache of your Phone then tick on USB debug then connect it to PC & wait for some time windows will Automatically detect them but make sure that you should remove all drivers which are already installed
If the above method didn't work then install PDA net drivers they will work 100% sure.
