Hi,
I'm thinking about getting an Atrix as my next phone, but I have a few questions:
1. Will the bootloader/encryption ever be cracked? Will the phone ever get true custom ROMs e.g CyanogenMod?
2. How's the camera on the Atrix?
3. In all truthfulness, how is Motoblur? Wil Motoblur with Gingerbread change anything?
4. If the bootloader/encryption is ever cracked, will devs be able to replace WebTop with something better, like ChromeOS or Ubuntu?
5. The Lapdock trackpad doesn't have multitouch, correct?
Sorry if any of these have been asked before
Thanks,
Phil

1) Most likely, but there's no way to know for sure. If it is, it probably wont be any time soon. However, there's a promising trick called 2init that allows custom roms (sans custom kernels) on other locked down Motorola devices that's being looked at for a possible port to the Atrix.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052550
2)Not the greatest, but its not terrible either. It has a little bit of color banding on darker colors, but so long as the lighting is good the images come out decent.
3) Motoblur frankly sucks. It just slows the phone down. You can install an alternative launcher and it helps a bit, but its still running in the background.
When the 2.3 Gingerbread update comes out, it should help tremendously if the Droid X version of the updated motoblur is anything to judge by.

4) Most likely. In fact, there are already hacks that enable modification of the webtop environment, effectively turning it into a fork of Ubuntu.
5) I dont know, dont have a webtop dock. I would assume it does.
I would definitely recommend the phone, though, if your looking for raw performance. Just replace the motoblur launcher and this thing flies.
I am thoroughly pleased so far with the 2.3.4 atrix rom on my x2. The only thing i am lacking @ this point which i didnt notice till i went to watch a movie last night was no HDMI options in settings....
Is there anyway to go about getting this back?
I have the HDMI option in settings but when I use Netflix on my phone and hook it up to my TV the picture is turned on it's end. I cannot seem to find a setting to change that. Never had that problem pre-2.3.4
Yeah that's my only gripe with this ROM at this point, but it's kind of a big deal to me. Hoping for a fix soon.

You're going to need com.motorola.android.mirrorservice from the X2 version.
I feel stupid but i am not seeing HDMI in the settings menu anywhere... Is it labeled the same?
Under settings you should see HDMI. I'm running 0.3 and it's there. I have not made any mods.
Im on .3 as well... not seeing it.. just out of curiosity where did you start, before you flashed it?
It's there on mine as well, but nothing regarding mirroring like the stock x2. Love the ROM, but this blows. I switched to eclipse for this reason, but switched back because the camera is so much better on atrix and I get virtually no force closes.

Well appearantly if you flash from eclipse to the atrix HDMI is not in the settings menu...
I SBF'd back to the OTA gingerbread/rooted/flashed to atrix and HDMI is now there... new options as far as the ouput resolution but no scaling slider..
com.motorola.andoid.mirrorservice wont restore from tb i pushed it there manually but doesnt seem to make a diff.
Sorry this is slightly off topic, but I've have the same basic problem with P3's Pre-Rooted 2.3.3 all along and I'd love to fix it as well (especially since it's supposed to work in DX2's 2.3.3). It's never worked for me (I always got a black screen (no input recognized) when plugged into HDTV since the Gingerbread update). I later enabled portrait mode only by editing the build.prop line "ro.hdmi.mirror.enable=TRUE" (where it was false). As is well-known though, this DOES NOT allow landscape (the picture is sideways on the HDTV when phone is physically in landscape or playing video). I've read this exact case occurring with several 2.3.3 DX2's (as I've done copious amounts of searching on the topic) but I've never found a resolution. Is there any chance there is a known way to fix this? I'd be extremely grateful. Perhaps the fix for the Atrix ROM is related to this problem. Thanks very much in advance!

Ok so if anyone else is missing HDMI in there settings menu.. it may be because of a theme.. i had applied the cyan Icebream blur theme for atrix... once i applied it again the HDMI settings went away... good thing i made a backup before..
I had searched many information on the internet, but it still not solution....
i have saw someone use atrix flash the Photon Rom, and it is worked.
but if atrix flash the Photon ROM will cause many problems(I had try it...)

Can we use the Photon Alien ROM Converts to the Atrix ROM
It works on the Photon, the Atrix's Cousin Phone just fine.

i believe it would be a matter of searching through the Photon /system and trying to find what allows thhe HDMI mirroring, then moving those files into an atrix rom.
while that sounds easy it is probably not the case, there is most likley a few files and only parts of the that actually do the mirroring, this being said moving these files over may break some of the functionality of the phone.
we would need a photon-atrix hybrid
Let me know if I can help, I am a rooted Photon user, so I don't mind helping out.

do you know how the HDMI mirroring works on the photon?
Unfortunately, I don't.
But if you need me to pull some files, let me know.

also i cant guarantee or even expect results from this... i think better people thhan me have tried
If you need me to pull files, just PM me.
Marko, here are some links to posts in the dev section that pertain to getting HDMI mirroring to work for our phones.
it includes some Alien Photon files that pertain to HDMI mirroring, i'm not a dev and i have no clue what i'm looking at, i just like to keep up to date with HDMI mirroring because it's the ONE thing my phone doesn't do that makes me cry a little on the inside everytime i think about it

after that it kind of just died out, but it's something for you to start with at least
It looks like some devs are solving this problem?
Can solve it soon?
After I flash the Photon Alien ROM on Atrix
Problems:
1. Camera cant open (maybe the Photon has 8MP camera, Atrix only 5MP)
2. fingerprint (Photon doesnt have this one)

Can't you just copy the Atrix's camera.apk and fingerprint.apk onto /system/app?
Apart from those two issues, is everything else OK?
The Motorola Photon 4G has an 8 Mega Pixel Camera, and 720p High Definition Recording as of right now. The Photon has no fingerprint reader.
Hi all, i havent bit the bullet yet with this rooting game as the atrix as been plenty fast enough for me box standard, but since getting the lapdock and finding it so painfully slow that I wont use it, I started googling my options, so here i am as it seems that rooting is the answer!
Ive been reading about Jellybean and it sounds like its been designed to work with accessories like the lapdock, that lead me to read the thread about the CM10 rom that epinter is building which sounds brilliant.
I cant ask the Q on that thread because im a noob so can someone tell me if epinters cm10 works with the lapdock or would i need to add things.
thanks
Joe
Epinter's CM10 work with lapdock, but just simple HDMI output, the webtop app isn't work.
only portraite mod

yes and hdmi output doesn t work landspece mod or i didn t find yet
Thanks for the replies guys but just to clarify, your both saying -
The lapdock works?
Well of course it works, however much like CM9 it's only going to mirror the video output from the phone right now. However the auto tablet switch is still broken (from what it sounds like, I'm not on CM10 yet.) and Moto's WebTop is obviously still broken as well.
Personally I'm waiting for a version of Paranoid Android based on CM10. Maybe when that hits I can finally switch modes without having to reboot.

I think i could live with that as the browser on the lapdock is only useable if i use it through the phone rather than its own firefox.
So i would just be losing out on screen resolution.
Does JB still have the bug where on the lapdock you get 10 FPS and on the phone its nice and smooth?
Actually I'm getting decent FPS with Paranoid Android. It's still not great but it's WAY better than it was. The start screen for Need for Speed: Shift and it's pretty good. Galaxy on Fire 2 THD works like I expect it to as well. My guess is that it's been fixed in Joker's latest CM9's and yeah CM10 as well.
I doubt it will be perfect until Moto releases ICS officially though (and hopefully they can use something out of that to help with CM10 too).
do the cm 9 ports have hdmi output

I doubt my lapdock would work if they didn't. Also I've tried the cable with a DVI adapter and that works fine, so yeah.
If you meant CM10, I have no clue yet but I'm getting tired of waiting for a CM10 based parandroid (which is what I'm going to call it for short from now on, because I think it's clever).
I've flashed cm10 and will give my lapdock a try when its charged. The is some mention of changes today but I haven't read the change log.

I just flashed it, didn't even bother with the new gapps yet though. Came over from Parandorid 1.6 and all I did was wiped the caches.
So far no issues but I absolutely HATE the app picker. It was much easier with ICS where you picked it and checked always use if you wanted to. Now you have to pick it and select either just once or always (so two taps instead of one).
Loud sound lapdock
On [ROM] CM10 (JellyBean) for Atrix - 20120729 very loud lapdock sound in mirror mode. What I can do on it?
What do you mean loud? It functions normally for me. Maybe turn down the volume? Sorry you're going to need to be more specific as to what the problem is.

Very loud minimum volume (level 1).
I tried with both the phone speaker and the stereo system I plug it into and I could not replicate the issue on my end, sorry.
You did check all the volume levels right?
Posting a logcat might help someone. I'd mention the issue in the main thread.

So just to make it clear. You dont have webtop with the flashed rom?
Is there an ICS ROM with working webtop yet?
I only use the Atrix with the lapdock in GB. Is there an ICS ROM with proper support or do I have to wait for the official ICS?
NO ONE has webtop with JB, let alone ICS. If they do they're *******s for hiding it from the rest of us.
The devs are working on it. Official ICS *SHOULD* bring it when it hits (if it hits, which I'm sure it's going to it's just taking forever).
What I'd really like to see is companies release all the source code for their "dead" devices. But it will probably be a cold day on Mercury when that happens.
I don't even have a webtop like interface either, nor will I until paranoid android comes out with a modified CM10 of their own. My hope is then that I can switch DPI without having to reboot.

So I'll just stick with 2.3.4 stock, my lapdock working and wait patiently for ICS.

so your phone isnt rooted and your lapdock works ok?
Hi
I've been thinking about using Webtop for months, but never started to use it. I had no dock and cables so I gave up.
But now I want to use it and I have some questions.
1. Do I need a dock?
2. Can I use Lokifish Marz's Ubuntop without a dock?
3. Is that good for more than just surfing the internet? Can I use Firefox addons like dragonfly?
4. Are there any other special versions of webtop like Ubuntop?
Maybe I'll recall more questions in the future, but that's it for now.
Thanks!
