[Q] Not sure if bricked Vibrant or something else - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all -
My "bricked" situation appears to be unique as I've searched all over and have only found others with at least a phone that has a display.
Scenario:
Had SimplyHoney 4.0 installed (I believe Voodoo Lagfix was enabled). Decided it was time to go back to stock. ODIN'd back to stock (doesn't that wipe any VooDoo?). Re-rooted phone and connected to Kies for giggles to see if it would actually work this time for an "Official" update. (Last time I connected the phone it would not recognize the phone as the appropriate phone for an update) This time it saw it as a Vibrant and proceeded to do the Froyo update. Once it was completed, the Vibrant's screen never turned on.
It feels warm to the touch when you turn on the phone after a few minutes like it typically does, but I can't see anything on the screen.
Did this update do an extreme brick to my phone that it is now a lost cause?
I appreicate any advice you have.
BTW, tried the download button combos that are out here and none of those worked.
When I last had my phone open to fix the GPS contact, I see there is a small battery. Would popping that help reset anything?
It's the same scenario in this video on YouTube - "Video of hard bricked vibrant" by htcpro1212
Sorry can't post links yet.

I had a similar situation with a friends Vibrant this is what I did...pull out battery, plug phone to computer with usb, do the three button combo (volume up down &power) while holding replace battery and that should put phone in recovery mode... hope this helps good luck!
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App

no point rooting if you're going to update with kies, it wipes root
you could have just used whitehawkx stock 2.2 rom, kies has a history of hard bricks after you've been on a few custom roms
keep trying button combo's (vol + and power with the GB bootloades) but chances are its hard bricked, if it doesnt work phone samsung or t-mobile and say you tried updating with kies and it doesnt do anything now

Pm sent I can fix this for you...

You should always try ODIN back to stock. Its such an Relief.

I'm not sure if this will work in this case or not. When I thought I had bricked my Vibrant, I had a picture looking like a phone-triangle-computer on the screen, so it wasn't blacked out.
I got a "jig" (search the forums or google it.) They cost less than $10 and have saved me several times when I've messed up to get me to download mode so I can use odin.

[Q] Samsung Vibrant Doesn't Start

I was just upgrading my vibrant t959 firmware 2.2 froyo, while upgrading there is a message appears that its failed and there after i remove usb cable and battery after that i was trying to put my phone in Download mode. but My phone Doesn't starts. So would anybody help me what to do, my phone doest start no screens, nothing
Have you tried getting into recovery or download mode? and what exactly were you doing?
Here we go again!!!
OK, looks like another possible Hard bricked scenario using KIES again!!
I'm assuming you were using KIES, because you didn't say anything about ODIN or Heimdall program during what you say was an up grade scenario!!
Ok, first of all, if you plug in the charger, do you see any LED's at the bottom or any signs of life to the phone, IF NOT = Very probable HBrick
Now before you give up, make sure you do every possible senario, to get it to at least turn on in some type of fashion, Whether it be DL mode, Recovery mode, and so on!!
There are different combinations that can get the phone into DL or recovery mode!! Read and research what they are in the Bible, its got everything!!
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=99126
LinK: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954509
Also make sure you have your tools ready, meaning ODIN 1.71 and up, also Baywolfs AIO program is very good at getting phones into DL mode and reflashing it back to stock JFD, where you can at least rebuild your phone.
Now if everything totally fails to even get an LED or any signs of life to your phone, then either you Trully HBricked, and you have 2 optons.
1st Call TMO and tell them you were just talking on it, PERIOD do not say you were flashing with KIES, or they will immediately tell you its a Samsung problem, and you will be W/O your phone for about 3 +_ weeks, after sending it to Plano,TX where they will attempt to JTAG it.
As long as you just stick with the senario of it just died, Period and it wont turn on Period, I tried pulling the battery back out, and power it on Period, and end with a it does absolutely nothing, it seems totally dead, then they will RMA it for you, if you choose insurance for a month itll only cost ya $5.00 for Overnite shipping, and youll have a new phone in about 24 to 36 hours, TMO is very quick to get out of a replacement if they can pass the buck to Samsung, otherwise, its off to Samsung in Plano,Tx and your screwed for a long time, YOUR CHOICE!!
Or send it to josh at: http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-vibrant-jtag-brick-repair/
he does very good turn times, and is very professional.
Just remember, make sure your phones really HBricked, a soft bricked phone turns on in some type of mode, and is then recoverable by YOU!!
If it doesn't do a ****ing thing, NO LIFE to it, then most likely the BL.bin and the SBL.bin files got corrupted and it will not turn on no matter what you do, and that's a HBricked situation, and only JTAGing it will get it to power back on again, short of a burned out CPU or worst = HW failure!!
MOD's We need a sticky about forewarning people about the dangers of using KIES, there's been a rash of HBricked phones lately using this POS from Samsung!!
I was doing just firmware upgrade
HI, During upgrading i have wrong ODIN software which was for t959V that is for samsung galaxy s4g, and i use that odin software and .tar file was correct for vibrant and i start the process thats why i got this, but now my phone doesnt show any screen, i tried hard so many thing to put into Dmode and Rmode but nothing worked out for me, battery is fully charged and even though there is nothing comes on screen, its completly dead. Please Do Me some trick to fix this

[Q] HELP! Photon wont boot! (Stuck at red M)

So yesterday I was in a call with low battery when it shut off. Normally not a problem, just plug it into the wall for a while. Well when I tried to turn it on, it wouldn't even boot up. It was stuck at the red M logo. The LED showed amber colored as well. I left it plugged in and the light remained amber until 90% battery, where it turned green.
I tried to turn it on and its been stuck on the red M logo. Its been stuck for more than 12 hours now.
I CAN access fastboot, android recovery, etc. I already tried wiping the cache and even did a factory reset. Still wont work.
What can I possibly do? I luckily have a backup phone, but I've had my photon for less than a month, no warranty, and I'm a novice Android user. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Click on the software and tools link and use rsd lite to reflash the stock os onto the phone. If that doesn't work I would take it to the sprint store.
I assume you tried pulling the battery?
I'm downloading SBF now. Hopefully it works, because I live in Canada and we don't have Sprint stores.
And YES, I tried pulling the battery. Multiple times. With every combination (eg, plug in, turn on, then insert battery; put in battery, turn on, then plug in, etc)
the sbf should work but may i ask how you managed to brick your photon? when i just got mine i did everything wrong and i never got even a soft brick so i'm interested what i didn't mess up haha
Quick question: I should be downloading the most recent? Will it make a difference?
And damn, did I actually brick it?? I'm pretty new to this thing, this is my first Android and I've had it for less than a month...
And nothing should have triggered it. I added another line in build (ro.media.setting.1080p or something) and I added another setting in /system/etc/mediaprofiles.xml. I was trying to add 1080p to the camera (unsuccessfully). I didn't remove anything, and even after a reboot it was fine.
It wasn't until the battery died, where it stopped booting up. Just my luck :/
You should probably choose one of the newer ones, just becasue of bug fixes, etc. If you happen to know what version you were running before then I'd choose that. I cant stress enough, make sure the one you download is for the Photon and NOT Electrify! And technically yeah that is a brick lol but its extremely hard to legit brick beyond repair a photon due to the fact that we have RSD Lite and SBF files to bring it back.
Strangely, I found a thread depicting the same problem that I had, although with the electrify. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=14813
Anyways, the problem is fixed, by reflashing the SBF using RSD Lite, everything is back to normal! Well, almost, just have to restore my backup
Thanks so much for your help guys, I wouldn't have been able to fix it without you all!
can you fix a bricked phone??
My Photon has done the same thing! I rooted her and did the Bootstrap Recovery thing. Everything was kosher until I tried to load that stupid Beats Audio. Something happened between me flashing it and the reboot where it locks the phone. I tried to do the Android recovery screen, I wiped, I did about everything I could find. No bueno.
I followed this forum and clicked the software and tools link as instructed. I tried with RSD 5.6, and tried several iterations of SBF's located here and here. I was using SBF - 1FF-sunfire-user-2.3.4-4.5.1A-1_SUN-154_MR-3-CM.
It lets me go into boot mode, and when I try to flash the SBF it appears to go through, but it always fails at the end. Which, the posts state it will do, but my phone will not reboot afterwords. After trying everything I could for a couple days, I decided to just take it to a Sprint store. Mind you I've had this under 30 days, but longer than 14 so they stated it would have to be replaced. They tried to flash, but said they were getting stuck too.
I know that a replacement is pretty much the answer, but just wanted to check one more time to see if anyone had any other ideas, or could point me to other forums maybe? Appears I've done what few have been able to accomplish...brick this joker.

Black Screen Maybe Bricked!!!!

Okay so I was running CM9 3/22/2012 just fine. I noticed a nightly went up listed as 3/23/2012. So I downloaded and clicked on the downloaded file, for some reason Rom Manager took over and asked if I wanted to go into CWM. So I agreed and it took me to the AT&T screen with the exclamation mark. I then rebooted and got stuck on the same At&T screen. So I decided to use Odin to go to stock and start from scratch. For some reason Odin 1.81 was supposed to go back to stock with Root. For some reason it got stuck I turned off my phone and now it is unresponsive to most of the tricks listed on this forum.
So will a jig get me out of this jam, a quick search pulled up nothing reliable or I would have to wait 3 weeks to receive, I need it this week like tomorrow if possible.
Searched the forums before going to work real quick couldn't get anything concrete So I'm posting this and I will search some more when I get to work.
Thanks for any help.

not sure why you would even be using Rom Manger other then maybe renaming backups. This is i known issue with our phones and Rom Manager and has been stated way too many times. Try holding the power button down for a while to see if it resets. A jig is going to put you in download mode so that you can use Odin again.
Thanks for the reply. Yes I have heard of issues with Rom Manager and i stopped using it. But for some reason or another I kept it on my phone and idiotically agreed to having it put me into CWM. Also I kept the battery in the phone till I got to work, pulled it out of my bag to try the suggestion that was given above and noticed my phone is warm. Not sure what's up with that, I immediately pulled the battery and will let it cool for a while and then I will try with the above suggestion.
Can you recommend a jig for our phones or does any jig work on any phone.
Thanks for all your help and wisdom.

you can get a jig from just about anywhere. you probably dont need one though. have you even tried manually putting your device into download mode by powering down the phone, plug usb into comp, then holding down both volume buttons, then plugging in the device?
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro..._nkw=galaxy+s+2+jig&_sacat=See-All-Categories
Yes I have held the power and up/down volume buttons(that's what works on my phone) and plugged usb into phone while it was plugged in to my computer to get into download mode but nothing happened. Too late I already ordered a jig as I am despearate and hopefully it will be of further use in the future. I also tried holding the power button down for a while and still nothing. Hopefully the jig comes in a couple of days and works.
Thanks for all your help and wisdom.
Okay, so I got my jig today and put it into my phone and nothing happened. I put my phone on the charger and left it til I got home so it should be charged up.
So am I bricked or is there any other options I can try.
Thanks for your help.
Did you try holding both Vol and power keys (all 3) together for 30 seconds? It's saved my bacon a few times, despite how nonintuitive it seems. Also try the USB thing with battery removed, or try putting USB in and inserting battery while holding all 3 keys.
Still a no go I'll call warranty to see if I can get it replaced. If not I'll just wait for sgsiii to come out since its supposed to come in April now.
Thanks for all your help!
If your phone locked up while flashing bootloaders..

SGS2 bricked while booting up.

Well, first of all, I should start by greeting the community, as this is my first post. So, yeah, hey everybody, been reading the forum for quite a while now, and it's been of a great help
Now, to the problem - this morning I noticed that my sgs2 had turned itself off. I didn't suspect the phone to be bricked or something as this happens from time to time when using custom roms. I tried turning it back on, it booted up, showed my kernels logo (DorimanX, not sure for the version though), so I put my phone in my pocket. After half an hour or so, I wanted to make a call, but I noticed that my sgs2 still hadn't booted up. So I tried restarting my phone using the power button, but instead of restarting it just turned off and I hadn't been able to turn it on since - it's bricked
I've heard of phones getting bricked while flashing a new rom or kernel, but never had I thought it could happen on simply booting up...
I did some research on bricked SGS2 and here's what I have done so far:
I've tried booting up in recovery/download modes, but that doesnt work.
I've tried soft/hard resetting my phone - still no luck.
I've also tried making an USB Jig, didn't work though. I'm not quite sure if my self-made jig works in the first place, as I did mess up the micro usb connector pretty bad while soldering resistors to pins. I'll try that one again with a different jack later and will keep you updated on weather it worked or not.
So, my question is, if my second try at making a USB Jig fails, is JTagging my only chance on reviving the phone? I guess that a MOBO change would probably help.
Another question is, if JTagging is my only chance, wouldn't it be easyer to just replace the bricked NAND chip? Then again, even though I have all kinds of soldering equipment accessible and also have the skills to do it, I have no idea where it's located on the mobo... Some info on that would also be much appreciated.
I havent flashed a new rom for quite a while now, last time I did it was when the latest version of Resurrection Remix was released.
My CPU wasn't overclocked - it was underclocked to 1GHz.
I was using DorimanX kernel.
Thanks in advance

I guess the battery is charging, as it heats up, but I don't see the charging animation. Also my PC won't see that a USB divice of any kind is connected.

order an usb jig and try. If it does not work send it to a repair center
Very similar happened to me a couple of days ago. Sgs2 crashed and wouldn't boot. I was also running dorimanx kernel, under clocked at 1ghz.
Originally I managed to get to download mode (not recovery mode). Kernels wouldn't flash via odin. I also tried using samsung kies to flash stock without success.
I tried the solution for nand bricked phones in this forum, however, this appears to have hard bricked the phone, since it failed to flash and now the phone does nothing (other than get hot when it is plugged in.) Nothing shows on screen. The PC does not recognise the device.
None of the threads I've read seem to offer a solution to this - any ideas? I guess I need to try a service centre, but thought I'd mention since I had same configuration as jankanolv, which of course may just be a coincidence...

Sounds familliar, lol. Anyways, did you use USB Jig to get to download mode? Or you just managed to boot it up on it's own?
I am really confused right now, because I'm pretty sure this can't be a hard brick as nothing has went wrong while flashing something on the device - it just bricked itself...
I've just get in the forum a few minutes ago only to find somoene with this symptoms, and i wasn't in here for too long and voilá...
Since yesterday my SGII, with no problems to this date, went in reboot mode for a few times.
I have no clue what is going on, but im sure something is.
i'll wait to see if theres anyone else complaining about it.
cheers
Hmm... Looks like a lot of people are getting this "brick" lately.
Maybe we all used some kind of app that bricked the phone on bootup?
Well, I tried to make another Jig, didn't work... This time though, I screwed my resitors up...
Another thing - is it really relevant to have exactly 301kOhm resistance between pins 4 and 5? As far as I know, it just kind of short circuits some pins on MOBO, which tells the phone to boot up in download mode. But I might be wrong...
Btw, sorry for the double post.
Same Problem
Hi,
I just face the same problem today,
now my S2 not working and just heat up.
this only happened after the original update done to my S2 - Android 4.1.2 - 2 days ago.
any help please
heat up....near the rear camera heat up?
Sent from the little guy
Mine gets hot near the camera. Nothing shows on screen.
In answer to jankanolv's questions:
- originally I could get to download mode via pressing home/power/volume down. (Not any more following failed flash). I've not tried a USB jig.
- my crash which started the situation occurred while I was listening to tune in radio pro app.
Well guys....near camera heating + no boot/dl/recovery = claim warranty saying that you factory reset the phone, 4.0.4 was laggy.
Sent from the little guy
was going to post a thread asking for help for what appears to be a similar problem
mine got stuck in a bootloop after pulling the battery, tried flashing new software in recovery then tried through odin but kept failing, now its bricked.
does nothing, wont go into either download or recovery mode so looks like its off to the service centre with it.

Yessss! good to know I'm not the only one facing this issue.
I posted a thread about this yesterday but it is all the way down in page 3 already:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192996
I tapped on the "sync" toggle on the notification shade and my phone just turned itself off.
Recovery and download mode were accessible though.
Thanks for the help.
I went to Samsung to get them to fix based on the factory reset while on stock 4.04 premise, but they were having none of it, and wanted to charge me to investigate the problem. Once out of warranty period, it seems it doesn't matter if their software can brick your phone!
I found a local phone fixing service in Hong Kong which investigated, diagnosed as a motherboard failure (which I suspect my problem genuinely was given how firmware flashes were failing), and replaced + fitted for 700hkd, (approx 90usd). The guy did it in front of me within 10 mins. "Andy Telecom" in Mongkok, on +852 9237 9237 in case someone else has the same issue locally.
Well, outta warranty...that's another story. You only get 1-2 years to brick your device
Glad you had it fixed for 90 bucks, some service centers charge around 150.
Sent from the little guy
Well, I finally managed to make a working USB Jig, tried it on Galaxy Ace, worked like a charm.
What confuses me right now, is that my sgs2 has drained all the battery, even though it was switched off for about 2 days. I'm charging the device right now, and I will keep you updated on weather my jig works..
Sorry for double-posting again on an old thread, just wanted to let you guys know - I took the phone to warranty service and they changed the mobo. I didn't have to pay anything and everything is working normally. Of course all data on sd card is now lost for good, lol.
So if you hard brick your device so badly it even won't respond to usb jig and you still have your warranty active, don't bother trying to revive your phone - just take it to warranty service
I guess they couldn't see the odin download count so they cant void my warranty, he he he ]

Weird situation, phone mysteriously not starting, any insights?

Hi there! Long time reader, first time poster (TL;DR below...but it should be a quick read anyways )
So I've been using this S2 of mine for almost 4 years now, haven't had any trouble (other than a couple of battery swaps). For the past 6 months or so I've been using CM 12.1 nightlies without issue.
The events:
- The other day, my phone froze (I wasn't using it when it froze, it was when I went to use it that I noticed...it was on the wifi selection screen if it matters), so I held the power button to shut it down, and when I powered it back up, it just froze at the Samsung boot screen (with the usual yellow triangle).
- At this point, I was able to reboot into download mode at will, but any attempt to boot to recovery just led to the freeze at the Samsung boot screen. Also, the phone would automatically reboot itself at this point any time I inserted the battery (I was of course putting the battery in and out trying everything I could).
- I would have reflashed from Odin at this point, but since I was away for a few days I just kept trying to reboot into recovery, to no avail. On one of these attempts (power+vol up+ home) it showed the Samsung boot screen, and then immediately shut down and I haven't been able to get anything onto the screen since
I'm now home, and I can't seem to fix it. If I plug the phone into a charger, the top half or so of the phone gets warm, and it also seems to get warm if it isn't plugged in and I try to power it up. I was thinking maybe the phone was maybe doing the same thing as before and just not showing anything on screen, but I blindly do the steps to get it into download mode, and Odin doesn't recognize anything (drivers are definitely installed). I have also tried other batteries, no luck.
Any ideas of what I might try? I'm willing to do anything. For the record nothing happened to the phone at all when this all happened (no dropping or water damage or anything, just my attempts at booting into recovery). Maybe I should try a jig? I'm also open to opening the phone if there's something I can do, though I don't have experience with this.
Thanks so much for any suggestions!
TL;DR: phone froze (running CM 12.1 nightly), held power to shut it down, and then consistently froze at the boot screen on any attempts to power it on. After a few attempts at booting into recovery (the phone would only freeze or enter download mode) the screen suddenly shut off and I haven't seen anything on it since no matter what I try. I can't think of anything that happened to the phone I'm open to any and all suggestions! Thanks
One sentence amongst your description stands out like a 'sore thumb'.....
That the device heats up towards the top when you attempt to charge it.......
Until you try a jig I can't be certain, but that heating coupled with a dead/unresponsive screen along with a lack of recovery and/or download modes (download mode is 'hardwired' into the device, and NOTHING should be able to corrupt it) are the primary symptoms of a failed motherboard.......
That is my opinion based on my experience in these forums and personal experience with a (now dead) S2 (one of two that I own).........
Get the jig just to be sure, but I'd be surprised if it had any effect.....sorry to be typing something you don't want to read, but you said it yourself, the device is 4 years old....it's been in service roughly twice as long as most smartphones, and they don't last forever....

Thanks dude! It's nice to have some idea of what happened. I am indeed very happy my phone has lasted me this long, and my friend is gonna give me an extra S2 she has anyways it seems so it's all good!
I'll try the jig and update here with the result (I ordered one online...will arrive in January sometime)...just in case anyone is curious.

I'll try the jig and update here with the result (I ordered one online...will arrive in January sometime)...just in case anyone is curious.

Yeah....be good to know the results.....If only to confirm or refute what I've suggested.....

Sorry it took me a while...the jig was in the post haha. It didn't do anything at all (no response when I plugged it in) so I think it's safe to say you were bang-on and the motherboard failed! Happily using a new S2 (with CM13.0 now ) on behalf of my friend though.
Thanks again.
Sounds familiar. Happened to me also due to failed cyanogenmod update (CM13). Only thing that works is download mode, so i'm not given up hope yet.
I can't post a link but google ''Apply Update Failure samsung galaxy s II'' there's a thread about this on the cyanogenmod forum.

oh mine was just straight up dead...no download mode or anything visible on the screen (and nothing to do with CM13 either)
hope you get yours sorted out! have you tried reflashing anything via Odin while in download mode?
Its hard to tell you and hard to accept. You can almost give up the hope, your NAND Chip is just what we call " wear-out ". In the most cases no write is possible anymore, the funny part is -> sometimes read is still fine. If that is the case: The system is booting and working, but saving just nothing. The NAND is frozen to its state before it broke.
At our local store, customers come to us with issues like " Factory Reset impossible ", "Can't delete my Files" "Can't create files". All these Devices have inaccessible NAND's and inaccessible Recovery. Only Bootloader is working, but as the NAND is broken, flashing doesn't change anything.
