[Q] rooting issues, need help here.. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have a sgs2 and im on the process of rooting, i followed this guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414 and im on step 10, when i opened s2 root, a dialog box appears with this detail:Index was outside of the bounds of the array and this is included in details tab See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.
Now i tried super one click but it also failed with this message:

Odin suddenly opened, what is my next step from here?
guys i really need your help, im a noob when it comes to this kinds of things...

help me please, anyone??

Did you remember to install the Keis drivers?

in the link posted above, the one i followed, there is no step that tells how to set up drivers, but i have kies in my s2..

Hey I had the same problem it was fixed by using an older superroot program i think v1.9.1

When you insrall kies on your pc it automatically installs the drivers for you. If you use odin to flash make sure kies is not running at the same time on the pc though
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

If you have not fixed just use the simple cwm and root method .
Root + CWM .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
jje

did the same thing again, but this time i made sure kies isn't running, i flash using odin and its ok, but the same problem happened again, while rooting using the latest version of super one click there's a dialogue box that suddenly opened and downloaded 3 files, and then i think it was odin3 that crashed and the whole process failed just like in my first post.
Q: how will i know if i already have the kies driver installed in my phone?
@JJegan - i will try that post but if im sure i understand what to do, im still rereading it..

Really can't think what has gone wrong. I must admit I haven't used superoneclick. I used the CF-Root method as recommended by JJE. Very easy. Just don't get hung up about the yellow triangle until you have everything working.
Hope this helps

thanks killall and JJEgan for all those tips, i think i made it this time, but how will i know if im my phone is rooted now?
@killall - how did you remove that yellow triangle?

You know it's rooted if you have superuser installed. For me getting rid of yellow triangle by using odin and flashing secure kernel similar to my phone. Then using cwm manager flashing one of the cf root kernel. Lastly download or install backup rom. Yellow triangle gone.

Hi
As macdaddyau says just follow the instructions on the CF-root thread.
I use a USB Jig which puts the phone into Download mode allowing you to flash without the yellow triangle. It also resets the flash counter. There are loads of them on ebay.

when you say secure kernel is it the same with original kernel?

thanks, but i still have some questions, after flashing the original kernel, what will i flash using cwm? the one that i used on rooting?
lastly why do we need to install a back up rom and what are the best rom out there?can i use titanium backup cause i read from here that its a good app..

- Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
- Put your phone in download mode
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure repartition is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
It is definitely possible to remove that pesky warning triangle during boot when running a custom kernel, though you should be well aware that this method does NOT reset the custom kernel flash counter. The steps are not complicated, but they aren't easy either, so read well.
(1) Make sure you have CF-Root flashed (see the first post). You must have the "CWM Manager" app available.
(2) Make sure you have the same version of CF-Root extracted until you have the zImage file. (ZIP --> extract --> TAR --> extract --> zImage).
(3) Push the zImage file to /sdcard . It must still be called zImage !
(4) Find an original Samsung signed stock kernel (preferably from the same stock firmware you have, but it's not terribly important)
(5) Reboot into download mode , or boot the device with home and volume-down pressed)
(6) Fire up ODIN, and flash the Samsung kernel
7) Boot the device with the stock kernel. CWM Manager will still be available.
(8) Start CWM Manager, select Flash Kernel, and select the zImage from CF-Root you previously put on your SD-card. The kernel will flash and the device will reboot.
(9) You will now notice you no longer have the warning triangle during boot, but you are actually running CF-Root with all it's goodies!
(10) In the future, if you only use the Flash Kernel option inside CWM Manager instead of ODIN, the triangle will not return, neither will your flash counter increase. But keep in mind, that CWM Manager can only handle a direct "zImage" if you are NOT running a kernel with full busybox support (this is currently needed for flashing kernels out of .TAR and .ZIP files)

thanks jjegan i think my phone is rooted now, the problem now is with the rom backups..

I think what @macdaddyau meant by backup rom, was if you had made a nandroid backup (done in recovery) of your current rom before you got rid of the yellow triangle, then you could re flash it.
If you don't have one then just download and install the custom rom you want then once it is set up as you like it, do a backup through nandroid or CWM app.
Hope this helps

-Install TitaniumBackup from the market. It will tell you if your rooted or not.
-And to remove the yellow traingle, you have to flash the stock kernel.

[Q] Queries about some Root Apps after successful Rooting

I rooted my phone following the instructions given here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126522 using Chainfire's method. It seems to have rooted successfully and I can see the shortcuts for CWM and Superuser in my Applications.
Now to remove the yellow triangle, the instructions say I have to extract the zImage file from the CF-Root-SGS2_XW_ODD_KE8-v4.0-CWM4.tar file and paste this zImage file to the SD Card of the phone. But how to do that? I am now unable to view the files on the phone when connected to the laptop via USB cable. When I connect now, My Computer doesn't show the GTi9100 like it used to show earlier. I am seeing the SAMSUNG_android under Devices and Printers and can only see the properties. I cannot open it or view the files on it. Now what to do? Pls help.
I am following this post by Chainfire to remove the yellow triangle :

Your third help thread today?
Ok, so you have flashed the cf-root, meaning that the phone is rooted?
Check settings, applications, development. Make sure usb debugging box is unticked. Any change?
If this doesnt solve the problem...go to apps drawer, click on cwm. Then click on reboot to recovery. Phone should then reboot to recovery. Connect phone to pc.Go to mounts/storage, click on mount usb storage,
The pc should see the phone's storage. Just copy the zzimage file to the phone . Reboot, select cwm again, and flash the zzimage.
Hope this helps.
Hi Stoney73, thanks a ton! The problem was the USB debugging mode hadn't been unchecked after root. So I did that and it worked like a charm! You were sure a great help.....can't thank you enough. I even flashed the original kernel back, and now I have root access and no yellow triangle either. Plus I am able to use Kies again! If you understand the process correctly and do it once, the next time you can do the whole process in less than a minute. So I guess, I just graduated one level up from being a newbie!
One quick question, for using Titanium Backup Pro root v3.8.5.2, it says that I will have "change the settings" and tick the USB Debugging mode. So for Titanium Backup to work, I will need to keep the USB debug mode ticked?
Another thing......AVG's Anti Virus is detecting the SuperUser (it's version 2.3.6.1) as a virus. Should I ignore this notification? And will the SupersUser app update automatically for newer versions if I give it permission to access the internet? I hear a newer version (2.3.6.3) is available.......can I replace the older version with the newer one manually?

ignore the avg warning about superuser. Its because its an 'exploit' which allows you to have root. I wouldnt worry about the superuser app. It's there, it will do the job. You can forget about it now.
The only time you will see it is when apps ask for root permissions.
The latest version of superuser is 2.3.6.3. you can actually download it from the market.

But again, I really wouldnt worry about superuser.
Glad I could help.

Yup, for titanium backup, you have to tick the usb debugging box. But also remember, that if you want to connect to kies(for whatever reason), you have to untick it again .

[Q] CWM Manager missing after flashing stock kernel

Hi
I have followed Chainfire's thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399) about flashing CF-Root to my phone.
It all worked fine until I tried to follow the instructions around removing the warning triangle seen at start-up. When I flash the stock kernel after flashing CF-Root I no longer have access to CWM Manager and therefore cannot select which Kernel to flash.
The only thing I did not do exactly as quoted was to 'push zImage to /sdcard' as I could not get Android SDK to do that - in cmd I typed adb remount (following instructions from here http://www.jamesriter.com/blog/tag/push-files-to-android/) but it failed as the operation is apparently not permitted. So, I ended up copying the zImage file onto my phone which should work according to this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126522.
Any help in removing the warning triangle will be greatly appreciated!
USB jig to remove triangle an reset custom rom counter .

You must have flashed the firmware instead of the kernel, if you flash the stock kernel the app will still be there. Just plug the phone into your pc to copy the zimage to your sd card.

[Q] rooted device can't install new ROM

Hello everybody,
First I'd like to thank to community for the hard work. I v read a countless amount of pages of this forum and I can't even imagine the time people spent helping on issues or writing tutorials.
So thank you if you re up to spend few minutes on my specific case (and sorry for the bad english).
Here is my device and the different version of kernel ...
1/ Rooting my device (tutorial in french translated from xda)
http://www.cnetfrance.fr/produits/guide-rooter-son-galaxy-s2-39763841.htm
S-Root version used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
Everything went pretty well when I rooted the GS2. I got the Superuser app so i figure it's ok.
I just used a modified kernel found on xda who was corresponding the my base band version (just the PDA in Odin).
2/ Installing a new ROM (Cyanogenmod by Rom Manager)
I followed : http://www.redmondpie.com/install-cm7-on-galaxy-s2-using-rom-manager-how-to-tutorial/ and http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II:_Full_Update_Guide (official guide) using Rom Manager premium.
When i tried to reboot in Recovery (manually or with Rom Manager), i can't find the "Install the zip" option, I have 4 available: "Update from the zip", the 2 wiping/delete options and the reboot.
So obviously if i try to wipe files, wipe the cache then to update with the zip I have the following Error:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
Do you have any idea what went wrong in the process ?
Should i flash the phone withOdin and change my base band version to another one ?
For info, I did the Permission Fix option in Rom Manager too. Didnt help.
Thanks a lot.
U need clockworkmod instaled first..

You didn't install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Thanks for theses answers but I think I installed it with Rom Manager and i flashed it to the last version.

When i reboot in recovery mode here is the only options available (and it's the problem i pointed out) :
(joined file 2 : 20111125_13221022.jpg)
Maybe a problem with my SD card ?

As we've already said, you haven't installed CWM Recovery. You see at the top of your second photo where it says "Android system recovery (3e)"? That's stock recovery.
you can't install CWM recovery thru ROM manager.
just flash the CF Root Kernel for KI4 thru ODIN , you will have CWM recovery.
Hmm I understand about the CWM version I'm booting with, but as you can see on the first capture, my kernel version is a modified one i got after using Odin (puting this Kernel : GT-I9100_XXKI4_insecure.tar from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671).
I got the root access by S2 Root.
Ok I think I installed only the Kernel and not CF Root available here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
I ll try to redo Odin and stuff and let you know if I'm still alive.
So it's not great right now. I have installed CF Root with Odin, so I had CWM on my phone (I could see the application). Then after reboot with CWM Recovery and installing Cyanogenmod, the phone doesnt want to start anymore.....
I tried to apply the insecure kernel again with Odin but still impossible to download. I'm stuck on the screen with the yellow sign and written Galaxy S2.
HALP !!
I just tried to put back the official firware version : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and put it in my phone with Odin.
Ok, I dont have the yellow sign anywore but the phone is still stuck on the boot screen (where it's written Samsung GALAXY s II)...
What should I try ?
I'm still able to boot with CWM recovery but I didn't make any backup and nothing work.
Do you think the phone is dead ?
5 posts in a row?
So, just to clarify, you've tried to install CM7, which amongst other things tells you to do a nandroid backup, and also to flash twice in succession. Did you do either of these things? The instructions are there to be followed, don't just ignore them.
Ok my bad I didn't backup anything because I had no data to backup. This was maybe a bad move...
Anyway, I tried to flash it twice yes. Right now, i'm working with a modified Kernel (with CF Root), and booting in CWM Recovery. When I want to flash again by installing from the .zip I get a Satus 7 Error.
In CWM, every advanced options are apparently available but I dont know anything about them.
And just so you know, on my SD Card i have 1 update.zip and the update-cm-7.1.0-Galaxys2.... .zip from Cyanogen.

Flash a stock rom with Odin and then root your phone again. Start reading and follow procedures when you want to flash custom roms again .See Intratechs`s thread for a stock rom
Thanks for your reply.
I did it, it didn't work, I mean i could flash with Odin but the reboot doesn't work : the start screen appeared without the yellow sign, but it's stuck on it.
--- update
FYI, I installed Rom Manager yesterday, it way interact in a bad way with CWM Recovery.
For now i can mount USB by CWM Recovery but cannot do anything else.
If you have a method to clean completely the phone ? Maybe the bootloader is broken...

CWM Recovery mode not working

Hey guys, I've had my S2 for about a month and decided to root it using Chain fire's post. I have the Telstra firmware(just incase), stock kernel and CF-root kernel, after rooting I flashed the stock kernel to remove the warning triangle, I still had root access and then tried using CWM zImage via the app... my phone rebooted into recovery mode but says:
-- copying media files...
Successfully copied meida files
# MANUAL MODE #
-- Updating application..
successfull...--Applying Multi-CSC...
Installing " "
Can't access to '/system/csc/TEL/sytem/
Successfully applied multi-CSC
then finally the normal(not clockworkmod from root) android recover options appear.
Does anyone know of a different root to CF-Root where I can use a stock kernel that doesn't hijack the recovery options?.

Recovery is part of the kernel, so all kernels will overwrite the recovery when you flash them.
Follow the guide in the cf-root thread to the letter to get CWM and remove the yellow triangle, or buy a USB jig and use it to reset counter and remove the yellow triangle.
I did exactly as the guide says, recovery now only works if I don't use a stock kernel.
I went into download mode, opened odin making sure repartition isn't checked, loaded CF-root-KF4.tar, got root access, the phone rebooted i made sure it was rooted and checked out CWM recovery then went into download mode again and flashed the stock kernel from Intratech's Telstra Carrier branded firmwares Thread and root was fine so I checked CWM recovery and it was gone, I then extracted zImage from the CFroot I flashed and placed on the phone /sdcard I ran CWManager clciked flash kernel>Zimage and it rebooted into the normal recovery mode with CSC crap there still.
How is there not a root program that doesn't modify (doesn't change features) recovery mode? I'd like to update by KIES in future and need to keep the stock kernel I believe.
Other root methods are posted on XDA .

No useless posts please
it wasn't useless there are other methods ie super one click root

Other methods to root
Zergrush
Superoneclickroot
You *need* a custom kernel in order to have CWM recovery on the SGS2, if you just want root, you can flash a root kernel, then flash your stock kernel.
You will LOSE CWM but KEEP root.
Also CF-root is a stock kernel, just with a modified initramfs (added root and CWM recovery)
I think JJ was referring to searching the forum and you will find the other methods..... So not useless unless you need spoon feeding
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
When I said Useless I mean not being helpful, and it wasn't I've checked the forums which I thought I read superoneclick doesn't work on retail phones.
and on the and then there was root I saw the guide has been super-ceded by CF-root, most guides on youtube are CF-root I'll have to just look around more.
@Veyka is the superoneclick root working? and what's the alternative you suggest?.

Can I use this to root? My first time.

This will be my first time to root, all I know is you use odin and when you root you can do alot more things with you device, such as overclocking and having custom ROMS. Im worried I will damage my phone/brick it, im already running XXELL4 unbranded 4.1.2.
This website shows how to root with the same firmware as I have, would I be okay if I follow this? android.gs/update-galaxy-s3-official-jelly-bean-4-1-2-xxell4-premium-suite/
To root use the chain fire method, boot into download mode, and flash through your pc. You are rooted and have custom recovery installed.
Nothing is wiped
Device won't brick as long as you flash the correct files
Your device won't be upgraded in terms of ROM, modem etc
You can now follow the guide on the website.
Helps?
Before rooting I recommend backing up your media to PC, syncing contacts with Google if they're not on sim card.
When rooted make a nan droid and have a copy on PC/extSD just in case.
Sent from my GT-I9300
Yeah all I want to do is root and overclock, im not really bothered about custom roms and that
Use chainfires root method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
Breakdown:
-Install Odin
-Boot device into download mode (hold vol down+home+power) and proceed (volume up)
-USB to PC
-Open Odin, if [COM:13] for example shows your device is visible, if not install Kies from Samsung for drivers and reboot pc
- check Auto Reboot and F reset time !ONLY!
-click PDA and select the CF-Root file (.tar extension after extracting .zip)
-start
-7 seconds later 'PASS' you are rooted, recovery installed
-Safe to remove USB now
For overclocking rights:
-Boot phone like normal paste a kernel zip that supports overclocking I.e siyah kernel v1.8.6 (Google for Gokhan's site)
-Boot into recovery volume up+home+power
-Install zip > select the zip location. Done. Reboot
-Install app (ie SetCPU, Nofrills) which allows over clocking. Remember to grant root access.
Safe over clock up to 1.6/1.7ghz.
