The best firmware... Which is it - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So what's the easiest wat to get XEU CSC, get KG5 Firmware and the newest modem, my phone was originally on a Vodafone UK branded firmware and is now on KG6 it also has the XEU CSC. Thanks for any and all help.
If KG5 isnt the best then I have been thinking about villainrom, is that another way to go, which is best either 2.4.2 or 2.3 as I dont want the stock browser to lag and dont want to use a third party.
Thanks for any help.

"Easiest" way for your first request is a bit of mix-and-matching from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1058&order=desc&page=2
What is "best" or not is really up to you, but Revolution uses KG6, lag-free stock browser and is generally the dog's bollocks:

Very little real difference between any SGS firmware if truth be told likewise custom roms .

[Q] Galaxy S II Firmware Upgrade 2.3.4 Help!

I have been researching the net on this and the posts in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
I haven't been able to post in there as I am a new user, but if someone can help me with this, it would be great.
I'm trying to upgrade my firmware to XXKH3 - Android 2.3.4.
My current version is:
PDA: I91000XWKE7
PHONE: I9100XXKE4
CSC: I9100OPSKE4
My Galaxy S II is rooted and it's on the OPTUS network in Australia.
My question is, how should I go about it?
Do I download the XXKH3 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/C4DRUIJTLL and place that in PDA and PHONE in Odin?
And for CSC do I get this: Optus OPSKG1 CSC: http://www.multiupload.com/EPWZTIMS1F and place it in CSC?
I want to be able to use the OPTUS network on XXKH3, but without OPTUS bloatware. I'm just not sure which files to get so I can be with OPTUS on an Australian firmware if that makes any sense.
My last question is, would this then wipe my data? Or not?
I appreciate any help on this.

you are referring to the right thread. clear instructions are given on that thread.
choose the PDA option.
CSC has nothing to do with what languages the firmware supports and it will not add keyboard language support either.
You don't have to change the kernel or root or unroot to flash a new stock firmware.
You can then flash the kernel of your choice.
If you want the CF-root KH3 kernel. refer this thread
If you want to flash stock KH3 kernel you can also do that.
as far as operator bloatware is concerned search for operator specific bloatware removal scripts which can be executed using Gscript app . or a simpler option would be to freeze or uninstall the bloatware apps using Titanium back up Pro.
Thank you for the fast reply.
So pretty much all I need to do is put the XXKH3 Stock Kernel in the PDA option and that's it. So the OPTUS network will not be affected correct?
Then root it and I'm done?
Thanks again!

Excellent. Thanks.
I guess my last question is, by doing this, putting the XXKH3 in the PDA option, will this wipe my data?
Should I back up?
Back up apps with Titanium Pro

Alright will do. Thanks for all your help guys!
let me know how you get on,am severely tempted to flash new firmware just for a change!
Hm. I just put XXKH3 Stock Kernel in PDA and flashed it but my phone still says Android 2.3.3. I used the CF-root KH3 kernel as well to root it again.
What do I need to do to get it to Android 2.3.4? Do I have to place it in PHONE as well?
The ROM is 2.3.4, just about any ROM in original development is. What you are trying to flash is kernel. Best of luck.

Er, Kernel is kernel and firmware is firmware. Flashing the kernel won't update the firmware, just the kernel.
Alright I think I understand now.
Downloading the package, which should do it and I guess the stock kernel is used to root/rid yourself of the yellow triangle.

It went well, the phone is working great.
My data didn't get wiped.
Follow this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
Download the XXKH3 package.
I also used Titanium to backup my apps just in case and MyBackup Pro for contacts etc. but haven't needed to use it.
After you flash that (if you want to root the phone) go to this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 and get CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH3-v4.1-CWM4.zip. Put that in PDA and flash it.
To get rid of the yellow triangle, follow this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14283369&postcount=2.
That's it. Thanks for all your help guys!
ok so lets say I chose new stock firmware to avoid the triangle, then later wanted to be official, could i plug my phone into kies and updatd to official 2.3.4 without problems?
i would like to try oranges firmware without rooting the device and voiding my warranty!

[Q] Firmware question not new to Android but OMG!

Guys,
Recently ditched my Desire HD which I've had alot of fun with for (what I considered to be) a far superior phone but basically got a little fed up with the display after catching a glimps of the SGS2's screen, haven't had the HD on since!
Although I considered myself adapt at flashing and rooting, I have to admit to finding myself a little confused here as to what exactly I can do with my phone. Yep, I've searched, nope, I don't want flamed, just need a few things cleared up then I'm off to have some fun!
Details from my phone...
PDA: I9100XWKF3
PHONE: I9100XXKH3
CSC: I9100CPWKD1
I'm rooted using CF matched Kernel and have remained on that, does no harm as far as i'm aware except for yellow triangle at boot..
I'd like to go from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 too and wondering about what to flash and what would fit, my CSC is Carphone Warehouse would that be correct? How important is it to match CSC?
Regards Baseband, doesn't really matter does it but no harm in trying modems is there?
And firmware, thought about Frankenstein XXKF3 or 4 or am I getting things totally wrong? Think it's the WK to XX and not sure what impact that'll have.
And on that note, does the firmware version stiplulate which ROM I can load? So if i go to 2.3.4 (XXKH3 or 4) am I then limited to flashing only XXKH3 or 4 ROM's? Does it matter what I flash over my phone? I've also read that some ROM's contain Kernels and may have to flash a stock kernel after flashing the ROM to match firmware or even re-root?
Actually the more I read back on that, appears I know nothing at all and that's not even funny! Even went back to the original SGS forums in the hope that I'd find what I need there.
I know that unless I move back to stock (which I am at the moment), Kies wont off the eventual 2.3.4 update but to be honest I'm not fussed as developers and cooks here do a much better job and that's experience from my HD days.
I have flashed MIUI as that's the ROM I used longest on the HD, loved it but quickly went back the more I satrted to read and to be honest, would prefer to stay stock for a while and get used to the phone, is that do-able with a flash from the developers forum?
So does the ROM have to match the firmware I'm currently using, can I upgrade to 2.3.4 firmware, choose a kernel of my choice and any rom?
Obviously not picking something up, hopefully someone has the answer I need without the links to pages read allready, want to start having some fun and soon!
Cheers!

csc is what contains your data settings and is need for internet you should keep the one you have for best internet quality.

firmware is read by the last three letters KF3 is what you currently have.
there is no problem upgrading to KH4.

no your not limited to flashing any rom, you can mix and match arounding to your needs and preferences.
after rooting they reflash the kernal to get rid of the yellow triangle, there is a tuturial for that chainfire's rooting thread, 2nd post.
So does the ROM have to match the firmware I'm currently using, can I upgrade to 2.3.4 firmware, choose a kernel of my choice and any rom?

no the rom does not match the firmware, yes you can upgrade to 2.3.4.
yes you choose the kernal and rom that you prefer.
All roms contain a kernel .
CSC is not really required as long as you enter the settings for your network manually but stick to cwm or xeu for UK ..
CSC are not upgraded and are often much older than the rom version .
KH3 probably the best current modem .
Rom is the whole firmware kernel modem OS etc .
You can have a KF2 firmware and swap kernel to KH2 and modem to KG2 in theory and it will work most of the time for varying combinations .
USB jif is better than flashing kernel to remove warning triangle as it also resets rom counter to zero
Me >>Cognition 1.51 rom based on KH3 and i have KG2 modem and no CSC .
Kernels have swapped just the kernel about four times on this and swapped and tried every rom on here .
Rom backed up using Nandroid via CWM recovery and apps backed up using Titanium pro .
Even a failed boot is usually recoverable with ease on SGS2 .

Stock Dutch Modem

I've been messing around with a few modems. But came to the conclusion that the stock one, was giving me the best results. By my mistake i forgot to write down what the stock modem was in the first case.
So my question:
Does anyone know what the (Dutch) stock shipped modem is?
Kind regards

[Q] Custom KJ3 or KI3 RoM

Based on reading some of the threads here on xda, most of the people are using KJ3, KI4 and KI8 and some uses KI3 like me.
My question is that, what is better ROM? KI3 or KJ3?
Based on this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) thread xxKI3 is optimized for battery, furthermore I use the KitchenROm KI3 custom room since it is not far the same from the stock rom plus it is optimized.
Now why most of the themes on the first page are created on KJ3?
Just asking what their difference and whatsoever.
thanks in advance.
KJ3 is newer. I'd use it.
aside from that, is it optimized for battery like ki3? I try to search about this topic but could'nt find one.
Samsung doesn't provide a change log with each firmware, its simply newer and people assume its better and it might just be.
KI3 didn't work well for me, i would recommend a newer version like KJ3 or, in my case, KI4
Both have been great on battery for me. Only upgraded to KJ3 so I could use the New jkay Stuff.

Yeap you are correct, actually most of the themes are Based on KJ3, KI8 and KI4, only few with those KI3 that is why I came to ask myself there difference.
Anyhow, very glad for all the replies.
Keep up
Any chance anyone can extract the KJ3 modem file? They didn't really show up anywhere.

STOCK is SAMSUNG firmware .
If you want 3uk firmware then restore your original saved rom.
Not bothered to save it then CHECKFUS is probably your route to 3uk firmware .

If you as the owner don't know then nobody else will know .
Just guess at a version of 3uk firmware for your location .
Or ask on a 3uk forum what is your firmware .

KI8 is the newest Gingerbread Three ROM apart from the ICS build released today.
I don't have it to upload though, I only have I9100XWKE1 which is a very old build, But if you can't find KI8 Three stock anywhere I'll upload it somewhere for you.
[edit] Infact I have KI8 on my PC if you can't find it online let me know.
Personally though I'd just flash LP7 much better than LPQ that Three have released today & not as much bloatware!
Because I am a really nice person, Don't complain about speeds this was the first link that would let me upload over 300mb

Unzip first & then Flash with Odin3 PDA mode.
