[Q] Display issue - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody.
First of all I wanted to say that i was thinking to post this thread in the QandA but I found out that many display issue threads are in SG2 General area so I decided to post my problem here too.
Since i have got my phone ( that was about a month ago ) i have noticed darker lighter horizontal or vertical lines. It depends how you hold the phone. But those lines are only visible in grey color or how to say - greyish color, and those lines are more visible in the dark. Othervise they are not visible. I started to read many posts about display issues and I got scared, how few people wrote that they had replaced about 4 units and they still failed Maybe I have the best variant?
Therefore I am posting a few photos and waiting for your opinions.
Firstly is it a seriuos problem? How would you name it? Vertical or horizontal lines maybe? And should I replace my unit?

Sadly because i am a new user i can not post links. Maybe if someone wants to help me i will send them PM?

Well I've got that too and honestly I'm not bothered with it at all. It's not that big of an issue for me to go through endless exchanges to find the one with the "perfect" display.
I think it's just a part of the AMOLED tech and a manufacturing limitation cuz most S2s have these so called vericial/horizontal lines but they're all unique and have different lines and at different intensities.
If it's bothering you that much then you might wanna exchange till you get one your satisfied with.

Replace it, you paid alot for it.
And its not a limitation i dont have the issue.
I know it seems like a pain but its better to do it now.

I have this issue aswell.

Those vertical/horizontal lines seems to be a common thing with the SAMOLED and SAMOLED+ devices but they all vary in intensity. TBH, Im also particular about the display, you should be more worried about the other display issues rather than these lines on greys.

How many of you have the yellow or line problem?

I was planning on getting this phone tomorrow but I'm quit worried after seeing some people posted about this. Please answer I'm not flooding the forum or anything but I'm about to buy a very expensive phone after all.
I'm more worried if it's appear after several days as I'm going to a shop and inspect one first hand before actually paying. Yes there's warranty but who'd want to wait for even a day for a new one after paying such money right?

Not me no problems .

No issues whatsoever
Nope. 10 char
No problem or whatsoever. batt is very good. i can comfirm that.
I must be lucky as my display is pretty damn perfect - no lines, no pink on greys and an even brightness and colour throughout the panel.

Nope here, i think who complaint is just a really small fraction(maybe less than 0.001 ??), imagine around the world there is more than 3 million already have it( assume from the pre order news from samsung), nothing to worry here...
Definitely having problems, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079444 for one of the larger threads on the "yellow screen" issue.
I've been asked to wait 3 weeks for a replacement unit (and that is only an estimate).
Also, I am not completely sure that you would be able to check the screen before buying - the problem seems to get worse over time and it is extremely hard to spot at the beginning, I've been unable to spot it myself until 3 days after receiving it.
Edit:
I also believe that it depends on the person as well, some can see it whereas some other don't, but their unit is defective too. See one of the users that posted an image of his G2 saying that his unit his perfect, only to have somebody later alter the colour balance of the image to highlight the yellow part.
That's the links I found b4 asking here. Also how much storage have u guys got? Is there a 16g and 32g model? Cause I saw in most specification pages that reads 16/32. Shops in my country don't seems to offer this choice.

Ijat95 has a good point too I mean we don't see this in the news or appear in every sites. Htc or iPhone or other competitors would scramble to pay websites to spread the word right? Or so I think
Just like erathnor says, I think most of the devices(if not every device) have it.
It's just the owner who doesn't see it.
There are even people posting picks saying :"look mine does not have it", but you can clearly see they do. I need to see the first pic of an sgs2 without the problem.
However it's a great phone, and it's not that annoying and the time that you will see it are really small. However it's there.

Yep I have some lines visible only on gray, not visible yellow.
Nothing bothers me because I do not notice it in normal usage.
Light banding is the nature of Organic LEDs.
Yeah i would definitely like some pictures from people that say they don't have it.
It would really help out guys. Good solid pic with gray background.
So just to make sure, the yellowish screen only appear at certain time like when brightness is set low and in grey background? Its not like a really big hairy mold across your forehead right? I'm at a lost maybe I should wait for htc sensation but then with 1gb it feels like a middle end phone. Aww man

4th: perfect except from it getting really hot + smell coming from topleft of the phone
This is from 3 different stores~
Too many problems if you ask me. I'm waiting for the iphone5 to come out now.
I'm pretty sure every sgs2 screen has the same flaws. I've tried a few in different stores and each and every single one of them showed the same "problems". I did spot the ghosting, yellowish left side, blue tint and the lines right from the very beginning, but to be honest: I don't care. Those are barely noticeable in real life usage. People are getting obsessed over such things for nothing. Who is staring at a grey picture the whole day?
No screen is perfect - not on the SGS2 and not on any other device (don't forget the screen problems on the iphone 4) ...

Blotches on all black screen?

So being that im a tv whore (own a krp kuro) i was playing some pioneer demo material on my gs2. The demo has a ton of awesome dark scenes that really show off how black these amoled displays can get.
There was one part where there was just a black screen for about 10 seconds. Since i was in a dark room my eyes adjusted and noticed all these Blotches all over the black screen. Is this normal? I see it on a 100% black background that i created as well. Any one else have this issue? It kinda dumb i know since i only see this in a dark room with a black screen but its bugging me now. I would be devastated if my kuro looked like that in a dark scene so my phone isnt any different.
Im on a bravia engine Rom with screen mode on movie.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
Normal, and might have come up in searches for "screen." People have complained here, asking people to go in closets and perform rituals to see if spots and lines appear. I will have your TV now. Thank you.
Righto. So I just took a picture of all black, then let my eyes adjust to the screen in the dar.... AND HOLY MOTHER OF MAY I? YES YOU CAN, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH MY SCREEN?!
Are all screens like this? Is there something that causes this? Because I honestly don't remember ever seeing these blotches on my screen, and i even looked once before.
Now it's so bad it looks like my phone has some venireal disease or skin-touchscreen cancer.

Seems like people are getting into a very humorous mood with the holidays, and it's spilling over to even serious threads.
What you describe is a defect of the screen. When the phone first came out, and for the first few weeks, there were a number of people who reported problems with the screen. The way to test the screen that was suggested at that time is exactly what you did with the black screen in a darkened room. I tried that test, and my phone has a completely black screen, with no light patches.
For some reason, there havn't been many reports at all since the first few weeks. You are only the second person I've seen to mention it, I think, since then.
The people that had the bad screens just exchanged their phones until they got a good one. Of course, at that time everyone was still within the 30 day period.
I was bein serious creep. I might have been comical in reply, but i genuinely want to know why my screen looks like crap now.

Thanks for the replies. I see if i can find one with out blotches at best buy

Actually, I'm quite certain this isn't a defect. In fact, it's just something that samsung says comes along with the Amoled technology, if you do a thorough search in google, you'll find multiple articles stating this. Do I think that since samsung screwed up on all these screens they are just saying that? Absolutely. But I also think that anyone who says they don't have it at all just maybe doesn't have it as bad. When I had the T989, it was so visible it annoyed the **** outta me, and it wasn't just splotches, but it was lines and stuff too. Now, I'm on my 2nd i777, and the first one had the splotches, not too bad though, and the current one I have is even less, but it is there, although you really have to stare and allow your eyes to adjust to see it. I think the next generation of amoled displays should have this little kink worked out, but if you look on the Razr forums, the t989 forum, and the skyrocket forum, they all have it as well. Its an all around AMOLED issue, and i dont think any displays with a Super AMOLED+ display are without it.
I'm the one who said my phone has a completely dark screen with no light patches. Well, that was a couple of months ago that I tested it, and I decided to do another test today. My house has a room with no window, so it is easy to get a completely darkened room.
When you put a black image on the screen in a dark room, the screen is not completely black. If you set the screen timeout to 30 minutes, and let your eyes completely adjust to the dark, the screen actually looks rather light, a sort of greyish. But the shade of grey and amount of light intensity theoretically should be uniform across the screen.
My screen is actually pretty uniform, but there is a slight gradation to darker arount the edges, a little more pronounced toward the top and bottom than on the sides. There is one very tiny area at the very top of the screen right on the edge directly below the AT&T logo, that is significantly darker than the rest of the screen. The difference in light intensity is not very much, but it is noticable.
The gradation of light intensity on this screen is so slight that it would be impossible to detect any difference in light intensity in normal screen use. People who have reported this problem are the ones whose screen is so variable, that they can see the difference during normal screen use. And if you would test one of those screens in a dark room, I'm told you would see a very marked difference in the light intensity.
So I say that if a screen is such that you can tell the difference when using the screen under normal conditions, then it is defective. But what Samsung or AT&T will say and do about it, I don't know. I havn't seen any reports from anyone that has tried to exchange their phone for that reason.
I tested screen out last night too and saw a few darker splotches around the bottom and side. Then my ocd kicked in. I was considering exchanging the phone today, but after reading this thread decided against it. Thank you all for the info

I'm not really concerned if my screen suffers from this but I have a question:
If it matters, at what brightness is your screen set to when you do this?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
I had mine set to maximum brightness.
My screen also has the blotchiness but honestly i cant think of one time where this was a problem. you just dont notice it ever in day to day use and if you have to get in a dark room with an all black screen to notice it then i dont care.
I didn't want to start a new thread so I'll bump this one...

So I've noticed lines and stuff when I go into the market/google play (the grey shows multiple verticle and horizontal lines, but I have to look a little hard. Not too big a deal.) However, I tried using auto brightness which defaults much lower than I had it set to manually and the screen shows tons of lines everywhere. For instance, I use ryude's unoriginal rom, and with the stock messenger (bright white) I get a ton of lines. I was wondering how many people use auto brightness and if anybody else has this issue. I'm out of the 30 day replacement warranty, but I have an upgrade coming up soon so I'm not super worried about it. But still...

Black spots/ink marks

Hi!
Got my S3 few days ago, and already in first evening noticed annoying black spots in bottom of screen. At first thought that I broken it, but searching found many threads about this issue.
As i understand practically everyone has them, there's just difference in quantity.
I took picture of my screen displaying black screen in dark:
i.imgur.com/QYZEI.jpg (add http, as i cant submit links, i'm new here
What do you think? Guy at shop said that this is normal amoled issue.
I wouldn't mind about little spots, as i cant really see them, but those lines on right are really visible when watching videos in dark, even in not complete darkness, and is really annoying.

I think you'd be lucky if they changed it. I've seen much worse - mine, for example. Unless you always use your phone in the dark I wouldn't worry IIWY.
Saw some pictures with muck less spots, so i thought that mine has lot.
I guess the I'll have to live with it.
Although this doesn't seem normal if you take into account price tag of this phone.
This seems to be common issue with phones using the amoled display. As long as it doesnt cause problems during normal usage of the phone, it will most likely not get replaced. There is a very high possibility that the replacement will also have the same issue.
Yours are fine, I've seen worse from my friends S3.
I would rather having this problem over black crush/pixelation. Driving me crazy. Hopefully it'll be fixed by software update since screen filter app's able to solve it.

Strange yellow lines in the AMOLED screen

Hello!
I have just bought a brand new Samsung Galaxy S II.
Unfortunately, one of the first things i noticed upon unpacking it is that the screen has some strange gold colored lines in the upper part of the screen.
The lines are most visible when bright light is shone onto the screen e.g. a flashlight a lamp or out in the sun. They are most visible on dark colors or when the screen is turned off.
It looks as though the lines could be some sort of seem lines between two display pieces that are joined or bonded together. Does Samsung patch the screens together from multiple pieces?
I am not really happy about these particular lines that are present in the screen.
Has anyone else noticed such peculier lines in their display?
Hello!
Anyone else have seen this before? Would you accept this panel anomaly if it was your own phone?
Hope to get some response here :fingers-crossed:
No mate. I've never heard about such thing. I recommend u to return it and ask for a new one. It seems to be a rear factory issue.

since its brand new, just check with the local samsung service center and see that if its a real hardware issue, and get a replacement of the same
I have just obtained a new factory fresh unit. Shockingly, the screen on the new phone has similar lines in almost the exact same position, although these lines are much less obvious than those in the first unit i got.
What the hell is going on at the Samsung factory or whoever makes the screens, it seems like they have thrown all quality control out of the window.
For such an expensive product to have these flaws is in my opinion unacceptable. There must be a lot of people that has received a phone with the same flaws.
Is there any Samsung representatives here that can comment on this quality issue?

Is this normal for SAMOLED screen?

Hi guys,
I would really appreciate some expert advise on my screen.
It has some horizontal lines/banding running through it, near the bottom of the screen is worse, and it's worse at lowest brightness setting but is still there at 100% brightness.
Hopefully you can see them in the picture although they don't actualy look as bad in the photo as they do in real life!
I took it into the place I purchased it from and one guy told me it was my fault because I have it in my pocket all day and where I sit down and my jeans go tight it has damaged/bent the screen. I find this crazy as I don't even were tight jeans, I skateboard to and from work and actually wear quite loose clothing. Anyway where else am I supposed to keep my phone?
And another guy in the same store told me that it isn't covered under warranty because this is just something that happens with SAMOLED screens and it's something you have to live with.
I know 2 people with S2's and their screens are perfect........
Does anyone else have this issue on their screen?
Is it a normal characteristic of SAMOLED screens?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers guys
I dont know but I dont have that-my screens perfect.
From what I see its a faulty screen and Id send it to Samsung to honour their warranty.
The screen shold be faultless for the duration of the warranty period ie the last day the screen should be like the first day.
And Id have given that repair guy a slap.
It's not normal. You should send it in.

Thanks for the response guys. I guess I'll just have to persist and not take no for an answer.
The only thing that concerns me is the terrible QC on devises these days.....what on earth is going on?
If I send this back for a repair there is nothing to say I won't get a new screen with another defect, maybe a yellowish tint or some dead pixels.
I have been reading about other issues on I9100 screens and there are several.
I think it's terrible that today when we are buying a device we have to come to a site like this and research possible defects before we buy....surely this isn't right!
I was wanting to buy a Nexus 7 but after the screen issues I've read about I don't think I will.
I was also looking at buying an i9300, same thing, there are so many defects that you could come across.
When spending this sort of money on a device I really don't think this is acceptable, yet companies are getting away with it.
I'm not sure what can be done but I hope something changes and QC improves.
Right now I'm stuck with an S2 with a defective screen and I'm weighing up weather this defect is more bearable than maybe getting a new screen with a different defect.
Come on Samsung........,Sort your S**T out!

I'd just like to ask about what screen issues? I'm fairly sure all of those quality issues with the screen have been sorted out by now, regarding lift etc. Someone in my family owns a Nexus 7 and it is the smoothest performing Android tablet that I've ever seen, even more so than my TF300 that I'm typing this on (although I now have a custom ROM on it that works very quickly). The screen density is great, no lift that I can notice, and overall it is a powerhouse of a tablet!
As for the rest of the build...I'm shocked by the quality. Its extremely solid for a plastic-backed device. It almost feels like metal its so tough, although it is still soft-to-the touch (absolutely no flex, though. Zero. Zip. Just soft to the touch as said)

By the sounds of it your family member got lucky with their N7.
Just go to the N7 forum and have a read, the problems still aren't fixed in the latest batch.
Anyway this is kinda off topic so best to discuss in the N7 forum.

Theyll probably just load stock 4.0.4 onto it-that was their attempt to fix my wifes overheating/freezing s2.
I would email samsung directly and put it back. And dont settle for any half arsed repair, make sure your satisfied.Only downside is the time the phone is away from you cos its an inconvenience.
They also like to get out of warranty with the usual "water damaged" excuse.
On a side note, they locked horns with me-and lost.Bought a phone from a catalogue company(the overheating one),wasnt happy so bought a note, complained and the £450 for the s2 was refunded, and the girl told me "to destroy the phone" rather than sending it back.
Loaded rootbox/dk and its perfect.Gave it to my son just to use for shooting videos.
Yeah that's what I thought they might do, I don't care what firmware they put on it I'll just restore my CWM back up when I get it back.
I hope they don't leave that diagnostics box thing on the screen though, that sounds like right mission to have to remove.
In fact the guy in the shop I bought it from said a factory reset would fix it, the muppet, It is clearly a faulty screen.
Mine was having some overheating issues too when I first bought it and I took it in a week after purchase and he said there's nothing I could do because I had installed a custom ROM, I hadn't, it was Go Launcher I installed. Just goes to show how much this guy knows!
I actually bought this phone on 14th March with ICS installed straight out of the box, which was weird, it was obviously a very early release (LP2) and was why the phone was over heating.
Overheating is normally a kernel/ROM issue so your very lucky you got to keep your S2. Score!
Hopefully if I return it they'll realise it IS a faulty screen and just replace it, like I said though it's a bit of a gamble with S2 screens it seems.
I just don't think issues like these should be this common on expensive, high end devices.

I keep my eye on most hardware problems and Ive seen a lot more successes (screens)than failures....prob 85% happy.
Make sure no traces of rooting etc is on your phone when sending it back.
Good luck!
I'd say it's faulty screen. Mine has no such artefacts...
Oh, and I carry my SGS2 in trouser pocket, often bundled with companys Blackberry...
Pretty sure there are no characteristics of SAMOLED to deteriorate over time. I use mine lowest brightness all the time and car in pockets etc and screen is a clean white with no visible lines.
I think I'll bite the bullet and part with my S2 for 2 weeks while it's repaired
If I'm wanting to remove all traces of root etc I was planning to:
Boot in recovery and then format cache, system, data and internal storage. Then flash my countries latest stock firmware package.
Is that all I need to do?

My S2 and my wife's S2 have absolutely flawless screens. Not a single thing wrong with it. Id say take it back and don't take no for an answer because the screen has to be perfect.

Dont know abou you guys, but from what i've read Super AMOLEDs do get burn-ins.
I played poker on my sgs2 really long, and now the cards are burnt into the screen. I have yellow tint in the middle of the screen, looking like 5 playing cards. Also the place where the statusbar is, shows blue tint on completly white background.
Do you have any app that matches your screen faulty pixels? Maybe keyboard or something? I have an app called Super Manager and with that i can make the whole screen white, grey, black, and RGB, so you could further inspect it.
Let us know if warranty will cover the burn ins, or if there's some problems... good luck with unrooting, oh and dont forget to reset the custom rom/kernel counter with triangle away.

AMOLED's and derivates from it (SAMOLED, etc...) do suffer from the burn-in effect commonly found on older PLASMA screen TV's and displays.
When I first bought this phone, I only saw it's benefits regarding to it's brightness, colors etc...
But after few months have passed I've noticed that when I have full white (or bright) page open on my phone's browser, I see ghost from an android keyboard and at about half of the screen I could see shadows of widgets that I normally use!
So I ran the *#00#* test and, indeed, there were alot of artefacts on the screen. As of today, I'm reconsidering my purchase of this, otherwise excellent phone, and thinking of switching it for some of the competitors in the line of existence.
Really, it is very dissapointing fact that device like this, which should be top of the line product, suffers from a issue like this!
Currently I'm browsing the adds in search for somethin similar that will replace my SGS2 and with much hope without, ghosts on the screen... :crying::crying::crying:
