Hey guys,
Sorry if this is a dumb question but Evo3D is my first android phone and I'm trying to learn...coming from the good old world of winmo lol
I was wondering, is there a way to have root access on the stock rom? I basically want to be able to make use of all the great themes and apps that require root access but I want to stick with the stock rom as the base. Is this possible? Thanks a lot!
Yes there is. Go to the Development section and there are many topics on how to root, depending on if you've accepted the latest OTA update or not. Most are step by step and some even with YouTube tutorials.
so do I have to install a homebrew recovery thing to be able to install the superuser file?
Depends. If you still have 1.3 or 1.4 hboot/bootloader because you haven't done the new OTA update then you can easily use the Revolutionary tool and then it will install Clockwork Recovery for you after root.
If you did do the update already, head to Development and check some of the instruction threads.

How to unroot Eris to 2.1 ?
How would I do that if needed ?
I can't help but think that there is an easier way that I just haven't seen in my 5 minutes of searching, but I know that you could do it this way:
Follow the unroot process back to stock 1.5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=652419
Then get the official 2.1 OTA Rom from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695593&highlight=ruu&page=2
Once that is installed I believe you should be on an official stock rom. The older posts mention not being able to root this, but I do think they have come up with a couple of other options for rooting if you need to go back to it. Hope this helps...
I guess we could cobble together a new "downgrade.zip" that uses the boot.img and /system/ directory from stock 2.1 instead of the ones from stock 1.5 (and of course it wouldn't need to downgrade the radio.img anymore, so that would be removed).
If you're just doing it to return the phone, I'd recommend just running the RUU for 2.1. The only reason that's never been suggested before is that it upgrades your HBOOT to 1.49 S-ON, which previously meant that it was unrootable. Now that it's rootable, it shouldn't make any difference.

What's RUU ?
If you follow the guide to go to 1.5 stock then get OTA update for 2.1, can you root again later ?
The RUU is the main stock rom that the Eris comes shipped with. You can grab it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=606699 (use the one posted by thenestor 1/2 way down the 1st page) and save it, just in case. Now they have figured out how to root all the versions of roms out there for our phones. More info found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725096 . I do like to help, but most of these threads are right on the first page of the Development forum. Feel free to browse through there and the stickies at the top of the forum to gather some more information. You can't be too prepared when you are messing with the internal information of your phone...
Let me know if I can help with anything else.
I'v jst got the 2.1 update for my hero on orange, uk. I want to be able to install to my sd card, but I have no idea whatsoever on how to go about it. any help would really be appreciated
Follow the guide "complete newbie guide to install a custom rom" thread in the android development section. You will need to put on a custom rom that supports apps2sd, which most of them do. Im not sure if your hero needs a goldcard tho, but if you dont, follow the first 3 steps and the apps2sd section. Took me less than 30 mins and i dont know anything about android
You're not able to use Apps2SD on the official releases. It has to be enabled on the ROM itself AFAIK. You'll need to root and install a custom rom.

Dear chefs,
I'm using a rooted stock ROM 2.37 for HTC Ace until recently there was an OTA update to 2.50. Well, obviously I'm not able to update this.
Can someone cooked this OTA update to have root and make it into update.zip so that it can flashed at CWM.
OTA_Ace_Gingerbread_S_hTC_Asia_WWE_2.50.707.4-2.37.707.3_release_206238demb9h0siio032r3.zip
Reason for this is that, I'm not into custom ROM. I just wanted to use root apps. Therefore, decide to stick with stock ROM
Thanks
BUMP for today
You just want root and that's it?

yes.. just needed root
The problem with rooting this one is that it is a ROM update and not a full ROM.
Ah, i see..
coz i thought it is something that you can cook into update.zip and retain all the root access
found this on updating OTA for rooted device
http://www.htcdesirehd.info/desire-...ta-1-72-405-3-without-loosing-root-and-s-off/
I imagine this has been posted, but I can't seem to find it when using search on the main forum.
I just received my GB View today and rooted it via Revolutionary. My question is, can I just go ahead and update to HC or will it break root?
Question 2 is: Can I OTA or do I need to install it through CWM if so?
Thank you in advance to anyone who replies.
Don't ever install an OTA on any rooted Android device. You will lose root or get stuck in a bootloop.
Use globatron's method.

I was told to redirect my question here. My original post is :
Hi, my name is Anthony and I have a T-Mobile S5 running the latest version of android (I think it's 5.0.1 or 5.0). I'm kinda a newb with flashing and rooting. I had my phone rooted using towel root a while ago, but I lost that root in an update and it is no longer supportive of my phone.
I'm looking to install custom roms but before I do so, I would like to make a full backup of my current stock touch wiz so I can revert to it in case I don't like the new rom. I also would like to root my phone. Oh, and before anyone tells me that I need to install Odin, I have a Mac running Yosemite.... A lot of people have told me that I need to install clock work in order for this whole process to work.
Recap advice/how to:
1. Make backup rom
2. Root phone
3. Teach me how to flash roms using a Mac.
4. Include any other important info and links for downloads.
I mainly want to install CM12, but I still want a backup rom to revert to later
Thanks, and please don't post any hate

There is well written instructions on the web already. Maybe I could find a link for you.
That would be great. I've tried a couple with no success
Just use a windows pc... borrow one its 5 minutes to root.
Use odin.
You can downgrade to kit Kat also if u want u don't have to stay on 5.0
there are not many 5.0 roms or even customization for lollipop ,you will discover that fast.
