Why does gingerbread performance suk on the vibrant? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Everyone keeps stating the vibrant has issues with battery on gingerbread...... if this is a driver issue, can't these be borrowed from a phone with the same/similar hardware but is on gingerbread? And why doesn't Samsung at least release the nessary drivers so the phone can be supported seeing as they don't seem to be willing to put gingerbread out for it......

This has been answered a million times dude. First we dont even have a leak or anything for the vibrant, were using the 4g's leak which is different codes, different radio's etc. Blame T-Mobile for dropping support on this phone.

My questions haven't been answered.... why can't we get the proper drivers from other phones that use the same chips?
There are numerous other galaxy s phones..... where all the same chips (other than the radio )will be the same! GPS, CPU, graphics etc. Are the same...... so why can't these items be ripped out of other Roms to make the vibrant 2.3 roms?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

Because no other phone is using the same driver/firmware combo. The closest things we have are the captivate and i9000 which both use different radios. Same is true of the vibrant 4g.

The captivate is very close to ours.. the issues ive seen with gingerbread seems to be more than the smal.hardware differences of radios and such, so if there is a more clear answer what the big problems really are, im curious.
since they just leaked the 2.3.4 for captivate I was hoping we would have a better Ginger coming.. or at least should be a good sign that ours(leaked Ginger) can't be far behind right?

I'm not sure what exact answer you're looking for but the differences don't end at the radio.
The accelerometer on the captivate is turned 90° which would need to be fixed in the kernel.
The radio differences render the GPS useless without the same hack that we presently have.
The button layout is slightly different though an easy fix.
Using a captivate firmware is no different than using the i9000 firmware. Just because the phones look alike doesn't mean a thing. Once you start looking beyond the outer physical appearance you'll understand that the Vibrant is rather unique. Of course there are work arounds and hacks but nothing that we aren't presently doing. Without someone stepping up on a regular basis and compiling kernels that implement certain fixes or without a leak of our own nothing changes.

I guess I meant the problems the current roms have for many people. GPS is a given, never could get it working properly, but instability and atrocious battery life would make me think we were using a ported rom from a totally different phone.
I guess the thing I'm wondering, if there's been 2 Ginger leaks for captivate, then a vibrant source must be in the works and can't be far behind right?
It is amazing that you devs have managed to overcome all of the issues that you have, something the OP really needs to realize.. most thought it unlikely or impossible that ginger would be working as well as it is..

Why is the fascinate getting kernals so much faster than ours?

The fascinate is like the exact same phone, just with a flash, yet they have found stable kernals above 1.7. Is this not possible on the vibrant?

Same hardware.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I know, so why do they have faster more stable kernels
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Would you give up froyo for more kernels? Theyre still on. 2.1

There is a weird quantum mechanical phenomena whereby the presence of the camera flash somehow causes the circuitry to be more stable. One hypothesis, presented in the latest issue of Science, is way over my head, so I won't even bother trying to explain.

GingerBlur vs GreyBlur

What differences are there, if any, between the two roms BESIDES cosmetic differences? Is one faster or better on battery than the other? I've yet to root or flash a rom but I've read up on adb, sbf-flashing, and atrix pseudo-CWM and I think I can handle it. I've also searched but didn't find the information I'm looking for.

I had this question I was told to read the features. In nt experience grey was smoother but a little slower. Ginger was faster but buggier although I did get better battery on grey. That's just my person experience

Gingerblur had been updated more recently.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Yeah, gingers features all seem GUI related, though both are deodexed. Guess ill have to try both but I might just try GrayBlur...
Will I lose all my data and apps when I flash? I think I do but im not sure.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
You shouldnt loose anything as they arent technically full roms just a flashable collection of themes mods and tweaks

LOL, what look do you like better? That's the one you pick.
My God, guys. They are just themes. No. There are no differences in speed or anything. It's one look vs the other. These "roms" are simply theme, maybe with some per installed apps.
haha speed difference on themes =D the only speed difference is are you on the latest update from Motorola
Only asked since gray listed speed hacks and improvements under features, and the feature list for ginger was much, much shorter. This is what happens when newbs ask questions
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
They are themed, but please remember to acknowledge the heavy changes that were made such as deodex, removal and/or addition of key apps, tweaks to enable things like sideloading, HDMI mirroring and Webtop modifications, etc.
They aren't roms, they're what people have dubbed "pseudo-roms" - a composition of changes and tweaks akin to what a rom would provide. It's the best we can do at this point. And I'm really pleased with GreyBlur to be honest. Awesome work.
I was referring to the differences, as both deodexing and the other changes were listed for both I believe. I meant memory speed hack and such listed for grayblur.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I can say I have tried both and my PERSONAL preference is with gingerblur. I ended up putting the ProDX red theme with 1% and circle battery mod over top of gingerblur and LOVE IT looks amazing. Speed wise i never really compared, and I do not use a laptop dock or car dock so never had to worry about the issues with those.

Why do we need gingerbread leak?

I always figured we were waiting for the leak for the drivers thatll make our hardware work on gb but dont we have those driver on our 2.2??? Are the 2 that different tthat drivers from one can somehow be adapted to the othrr?
Just curious, thanks
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.
In a word... yes (too different to work). The hardware has always been questionable in our Vibrants, but yeah, the kernel is different thus the drivers/kernel modules are different. As is, it's cobbled together enough to work on most phones.
if we had a gb leak we would have better gps i doubt samsung is going to leak it atleast not for a while but u never know, and with kernels for froyo i dont think that would work, but if u used an i9000 port i see jvq/jvr all the times using jvp/jvh kernels but those are all gb versions
We need a leak for tv out to work on 2.3 based roms and battery life improvement.

Motorola ATRIX 4g roms

I was just trying to get some good suggestions on which rims are good to use with my Motorola ATRIX
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
They are all great and stable. Read through the DEV section and do some research. Find one that suits your needs, then flash away. Just make sure you are unlocked and using the correct recovery. Good luck!
ROMs are like pokemons - you need to try them all yourself.

This is no diss to the developers because I very much appreciate their work!
And I haven't tried all the ROMs
Still, for my suite of apps, for the smoothest and most reliable op of the phone and for the longest battery life..I am back to stock. I have frozen apps, I am running the .97 radio (which has made a huge difference to me in reliability and throughput) but I am stock. Mainly, I had issue with the various incarnations of the Faux kernel and always wound up with lost widgets (I like my widgets I tried all the suggestions and still, at some point I would lose widgets with the kernel. Since this is the basis of most ROMs that did it for me (and it has to be the kernel since I had the problem on the stock ROM with the kernel).
Good luck...it is easy to go back to stock if you don't like the various ROMs.
I intend to try CM7 later on when the Faux kernel and the integration with Setcpu (both cores) is resolved and CM7 has webtop integration (I use the lapdock every day).
I've used a few of the ROM's out there and right now I am on HomeBase version 2 with Faux's latest kernel. I will say that the version of HomeBase is pretty close to stock but it has a bunch of enhancements (zipalign, memory tweaks, etc). My suggestion is to get to flashing and see what suits you. What I like you may hate. CM7 is worth a try as well and I may switch over when it become official (or I may wait for MIUI).
As for the widget issue...fix permissions fixed it for me, hundreds of restarts and I still have my widgets.
You should check out the dev section...good ROM's and good reading!!!

I recommend 22 inch chrome rims depending on what you like.
If you are looking form suggestions for ROMs I'd suggest CM7.

Very low signal with ICS

Hi all,
I'm getting very low signal in my phone, only one or two bars with passion v13 and now with ICS euphoria even when being next to the window.
I get excellent signal in a HTC G2.
Does anyone have a similar problem?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Flash a new modem. Scrizz has a bunch especially for ICS.
I forgot to mention that I have already tried several modems: ka7, ka6, jksomething, but nothing changes.
Try a different city or a different phone... or a different cell company
sent from the xda app on my android smartphone.
I'm right around Chicago it is an ICS issue. My gf has miui and kb5 with 3 bars of H. I have currently 1 bar 3g same setup on euphoria.

You could always try the CM9 alpha or icssgs, see if there is any difference
If changing modems makes no difference, then it must be the rom.

Unfortunately its all of them. The only fix I have found is getting off ICS. Once the newest glitch kernel is back ported for cm7/miui.us I won't be able to careless lol.
P.S. this reply would not be possible on ICS, I am at work right now.

Interesting. I should have mentioned kernels (many to choose from), but it sounds like you might have tried a few of them also. Good luck.
You might want to discuss it in one of the ICS rom threads, or the modem thread:

Phoenix Down.
Every ICS I experience this on until Docs V5. My phone is useable at work again on ICS. It's worth a shot if low signal is what is holding you back from 4.0.

I am also in Chicago running Euphoria no issues with signal strength. I also work for T-Mobile and can tell you a bad SIM card is the most common reason for signal issues ;-)

If someone requests a new SIM card from T-Mobile, do they get to keep the same phone number? Also, I've had my Samsung Vibrant's battery since around Oct 2010. How much longer would you think this battery will be good 'til?
