I guess your x recovery is not properly installed.
I had the same problem first.
This is what I did (since 2.3 cannot root as easy as 2.1)
1. Download the latest flashtool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746)
2. Download the 2.1 firmware from here (http://www.mediafire.com/?sqv6274anzfzn2x)
3. Now place the .ftf file in the firmware folder in flashtool and flash it and phone will be 2.1
4. Now root the phone and install x reovery
5. Reboot and check if recovery is properly working
6. Now do a fresh install of your favorite 2.3 ROM and enjoy !
Hope this helps...

Alright, I'll try helping out.
1st. xRecovery
Install xRecovery then do a full wipe of your phone... Dont forget to backup just in case.
2nd. FlashTool
Use FlashTool Through your computer and flash the official firmware.
3rd. Master reset.
FlashTool 0.2.6 - "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746"
Decrypted Official ROMs - "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683793"
xRecovery - "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571"
See if any of these methods work...
result :
my phone root is broken so it says successfully instaled xrecovery via the flashtool but i cant boot onto xrecovery it just do a normal startup

that and If u want, do a manual installtion of xRecovery. lemme hit this up:
1st. make sure buzybox is installed, just in case, dl the installer from the market and run it.
2nd. dl xRecovery 0.3 and extract it. (preferebly on computer)
3rd. go into /res/raw/ and you'll find 3 files, copy and paste it into /system/bin/
then xRecovery should be back.
(i kinda do this often cause the auto install of xRecovery usually fails on my phone)
To stop all those questions about how to install one of the pre rooted 2.3.3 ROMs properly I decided to make this HOW-TO to keep the threads clear.
INGREDIENTS:
All you need is:
1 Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 device
1 Computer
PREPERATIONS:
At the moment, there is NO method to root your X10 after you have installed 2.3.3. So if you installed 2.3.3 via SEUS, PCC oder Flashtool the first step you have to do is to get a rooted stock 2.1 ROM on your device. To avoid errors I would recommend this step to everyone
INSTALL 2.1, root it and install xRecovery:
Get the newest Flashtool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746&highlight=flashtool
Get one of the stock 2.1 ROMS (same thread as flashtool)
Extract the ROM-file to your Flashtool/firmware folder
Start flashtool
Click on "Flash" and select the firmware you just downloaded
Click OK
Turn off your device
Connect cable to PC NOT TO YOUR X10
Press Back-Button on your X10 and connect cable
Wait flashtool to finish
After that, turn on phone and activate "Unknown sources" and "USB-Debugging" under Application-Settings
Hit "Root" in flashtool
Wait for flashtool to finish and X10 to reboot
After reboot hit "Ask root permissions" in flashtool and select allow on you X10 (a popup will appear)
Hit "xrecovery" in flashtool
GETTING ROOTED 2.3.3 ON YOUR DEVICE:
First of all, you have to download the ROM you wish to install. This step should be clear, but you never know . Every of those ROMs comes in 2 parts. 1 update.zip and 1 kernel+baseband file for flashtool.
Copy the update.zip (name can be different!!) to your X10s SDcard
Reboot X10 into xRecovery (Keep hitting Back-button while X10 restarts)
Select "Factory Reset"
Select "Wipe Cache Partition"
Select "Advanced options" -> "Wipe Dalvik Cache"
Select "Install custom zip" and select the zipfile you copied to your SDCard
Wait for xRecovery to finish
After that, DONT REBOOT OR DO ANYTHING, JUST REMOVE ANY CONNECTED CABLE AND REMOVE BATTERY TO TURN OF PHONE
EXTRACT the kernel+baseband-File into flashtools firmware folder
Hit "Flash" in flashtool and select the copied kernel+baseband
Now insert battery again (make sure no cable is connected. Otherwise the phone will start into charging mode and you have to start again)
Press Back-button and connect cable
Wait for flashtool to finish
Start X10 and enjoy your rooted 2.3.3!
Hope this helps

I'm currently using Wolf's ROM and I can tell you there's definitely a difference. The speed is absolutely amazing. He's made some optimization tweaks and there's no lag at all. Everything runs totally smooth and the battery life is astonishing.

Doh!! I hadnt unpacked the bundle with winrar so flash obviously wouldnt work!!
Hi, i have a noob question:
I'm now on official 2.1 update 1 and rooted with Z4root a while ago.
When i start this tutorial, do i have to unroot first so i can root again with the above method or can i just start from step 1?
I think you can just start with installing xrecovery.
Ok, I started the tutorial and installed xrecovery with flashtool. But when i get to the step to select the update.zip file on my sd card, it says the card is not accessable. So i Restored my phone and booted it up to check if i can check my sd card via astro, everything works just fine. So i Started the tutorial all over, even reinstalled xrecovery and rooted again. I did this already 4 times now ,but still the same problem in recovery, what do i have to do ta access the sd card with the update on it in xrecovery?
Thanks

just extract the ftf file inside the .7z using winzip/7z/winrar.

How long does the process of restoring back to stock 2.1 take? I've been waiting 10min and its stuck on "flashing loader" I'm getting scared....
You forgot to mention ONE important step: having SEUS installed in order to have flashing driver required for flashtool.
question here,
i was using stock 2.3 last couple of day, yesterday i decided to flash custom rom so i followed this thread's guide. however how i stuck at stock rom 2.1 because i can't gain root access! this is weird i been using flashtool and z4root none of them giving me root access. anybody have any idea what's this problem?
thanks in advance!

I went back to my stock rom so that means i hv a stock kernel ..and in stock kernel u hv to press the volume down button to go into recovery..and ES file explorer does go into the root directory .Go to ES file explorer -Settings -there will be a option called go up to root ..check that ..and press the back button it will go to ur root directory ..and i do have the ICS files for installing CWM ...
I never use that type of recovery,i m always use CWM and back button.
I ll tel my step :
1- make sure have all files and correct setting to remember while rooting and install CWM.
2- root the phone
3- install CWM
its easier...sorry not link to the right thread,it s already in the sticky.
btw...how you unlock your BL?test point or official way?

How did you expect it to have root and recovery, AFTER you did a clean flash with flashtool?
Se phones doesn't have recovery partition. So no recovery on stock.

Hi all, I updated my phone to 6.1.1.b.1.54 but then realised I couldnt root so went back to the firmware before fully - now I am wondering do I Need the full version of 6.1.1.b.1.54 after rooting? Or just the kernel?
Also how do I get CWM onto the phone?
There are so many guides etc, I've spent an hour or so googling it but perhaps someone in the know would find it easier?
thanks.

2) download 6.1.1.B.10.ftf if u don't have it - https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_d8uWGbkaeta1NFaWI0TlA5bzA/edit?usp=sharing
3) Open flashtool

7) exclude everything except kernel.
8) click ok

10) Now the kernel will be flashed.
11) after flashing is done, turn on ur phone and ur phone is ready to be rooted.
12) after rooting and installing CWM, open flashtool
13) flash b1.54 kernel in the way u've flashed b1.10. If u don't have b1.54, download from here - https://hotfile.com/dl/182170062/e1418fd/XPU_6.1.1.B.1.54.zip.html
