[HOW TO] Using Sony Ericsson Media Server - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Sony Ericsson Media Server that ships with many of their 2011 Android smart phones is a DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) Digital Media Server app that allows some of your audio, video, and picture files to be shared to other DLNA player devices (which includes some current network-connected HDTV sets, certain Blu-ray players, Windows Media Player 12, PlayStation 3, etc.). It doesn't come with the SE X10 Android 2.3.3 updates, but it does work once you get the APK installed. It's a basic app, but it gets the job done. The nice thing about it is that it can serve out different files to different DLNA Digital Media Players simultaneously.
Requirements:
- WiFi on the phone is enabled and attached to the same network as your other DLNA-enabled devices.
- Compatible multimedia file types stored on your smart phone:
Video: MPEG-4 SP, H.263, H.264 AVC
Audio: AAC, MP3
Image: GIF, BMP, JPEG, PNG
Instructions:
1. Open the Media Server app. Select the 'Media server' check box to enable. An icon will then appear on the notification bar to let you know the app is running.
Here is an example of what will happen with a PlayStation 3:
2. Turn on your DLNA player device. It should pick up the X10. Make the needed access allowances on the X10 and then select the file you wish to play from your DLNA player device.
A. On the PS3 XMB (Xross Media Bar), move over to 'Video,' 'Music,' or 'Photo.'
B. Scroll down to the X10 icon and select it. There will be a message on the PS3 saying that access to the media server is not allowed.
C. Back on the X10, another icon signifying that a client device is trying to access Media Server appears on the notification bar. Drag down the notification list and select 'PLAYSTATION 3' in order to set its access level. You can choose 'Allow access,' 'Allow temporary access,' or 'Do not allow.' For the purpose of this demo, choose 'Allow access.' A reminder message will then appear. Press 'OK' to clear the message.
D. Back on the PS3, press the 'O' button (BACK) on the controller. Then select the X10 icon again.
The PS3 should then have access to recognized file types on your X10. Just select the file you want with either the 'X' button (PLAY) or the 'START' button.
And here is what happens with Windows Media Player 12:
2. Open Windows Media Player 12. It should pick up the X10 and show it on the 'Other Libraries' list in the navigation pane.
A. On the X10, another icon signifying that a client device is trying to access Media Server appears on the notification bar. Drag down the notification list and select the device. (Depending on what kind of DLNA software that may or may not already be installed on your computer system, its name on the list will either be the IP address, MAC address, or whatever name another piece of software has given it.) You can choose 'Allow access,' 'Allow temporary access,' or 'Do not allow.' For the purpose of this demo, choose 'Allow access.' A reminder message will then appear. Press 'OK' to clear the message.
B. Back on the PC, Windows Media Player will begin indexing the supported media files on your X10. This may take a while depending on how many files you have, so give it a bit of time.
C. In Windows Media Player, click on your X10 in the navigation pane 'Other Libraries' list.
D. In the details pane, double-click on either 'Music,' 'Videos,' or 'Pictures.' Once fully indexed, all supported files should show up after you click deeper into those sections.
E. Double-click on the file you wish to play in Windows Media Player.
3. If you want to change Media Server settings, change the name of your X10 server, or change the settings for or delete the registered clients, drag down the notification list and select 'Media server' to be brought back to the app's Menu.
Note(s):
Sony Ericsson guide: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/sup...ct/usemediaserverxperia/xperiaarc?cc=gb&lc=en
Media Server is not capable of playing files from other DLNA Digital Media Servers or Controllers on your network.
Media Server only allows DLNA Digital Media Players 'pull from' access to your X10. The app doesn't 'push to,' 'play to,' or 'throw' supported files to DLNA Digital Media Renderers.
Sony will be shipping their own DLNA Digital Media Server app for their upcoming Android Honeycomb tablets (Tablet-S and Tablet-P) which will be different than Sony Ericsson's. This one will support the 'throwing' of files to DLNA Digital Media Renderers (some current HDTV sets and Windows Media Player 12) where the app can collect a list of supported multimedia files on all DLNA server enabled devices on a network and 'push to' or 'play to' a renderer for automatic playback.
Not all file types supported by Android will work with every DLNA Digital Media Player. This varies with the manufactuer of the product device.
Media Server does not give a client device any type of file management access to the X10.
I hope this is helpful. Have fun!

Thanks bro

[Q] Is it possible to remotely control one SGS2 with another SGS2?

When in bed at night I use my SGS2 as a DLNA server by hooking it up to my TV via the MHL cable and then streaming video from my PC (which is in another room). It's a bit of a pain though to constantly get up out of bed to change the program. My wife also has a SGS2 and I was wondering if there was any way that her device could be used as a remote for my device? Is this possible? Any help appreciated.
This is possible. I hope the following explanation is sufficient.
Get PlugPlayer from the Android Market. Install it on at least the SGS2 connected to the TV.
PlugPlayer is a complete DLNA solution - it does all three functions: Media server, Media renderer, and Media controller. Skifta and Samsung's AllShare don't implement all functions IIRC.
Here's the breakdown of what this all means:
Media server is the source of your content.
Media renderer is the device with a display/speaker where the media is played.
Media controller controls what media is played from the Media server to the Media renderer.
One device can do all three at the same time.
Here's our setup:
SGS2 connected to TV acting as media renderer - let's call it DMR.
SGS2 in your hand acting as remote/controller - let's call it DMC.
Media source, wherever it is; it may be DMR, DMC, or another DLNA server - let's call this DMS.
Open PlugPlayer on DMR and leave it running. On DMC, in AllShare, Skifta or PlugPlayer, select the DMS that is hosting the media file you want to play, then select the DMR where you want to output the media file. Then, all that's left to do is to select the media file you want to play.
I do this all the time at home. I use a Buffalo NAS as the DMS, a Logitech Revue running PlugPlayer as the DMR, and my SGS2 as the DMC.
I hope you don't get lost in the sea of acronyms.

Why can't I play my official digital copy on my tab??

I just bought XMen First-Class on Blueray. It contains a Digital Copy which can be used according to the box both on Windows Media devices and Android devices. I have transfered the official digital copy to my Galaxy tab with no problem, but the file won't play.
What can be wrong? Fox claims that copy can be view on Android are Fox lying to me?
What format is the digital copy in?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
if you downloaded the digital copy to your pc first and then transferred it to your tab it will not work, because you would have used the 1 license when downloading to the PC. There should have been instructions on how to transfer the digital copy directly to your android tab via pocket blu app or something similar

Its in Mp4 format. I tried with the player that came with the tablet and tried to two different Mp4 players which I downloaded from Android Marked and it still won't play.
And I followed the instructions on howto transfer it directly from the DVD to the Android device.
What can be wrong?

the only way to transfer the digital copy which came on a dvd with the blueray was to place the dvd into the dvd-drive on my pc.
Then the following dialog box appeared.
"Would like to view the movie on your mobile device or pc?".
I selected mobile device.
"Is it an Android or Windows Mobile device?". I selected Android.
It then asked me to to enter the code which was on a label in the back of the blueray cover" which I did.
Then the program on the dvd detected detected my Galaxy tab 10.1 as it was connected to the pc and transfered the movie to tab.
I followed the instructions to the point. Then there must be a serious bug in Fox's bluerays digital copy software???

I believe the reason why you could'nt get it to work is because you are rooted? I just
attempted to get my digital copy of RIo movie onto my tab. After going through the steps a pop up screen came up.... See attachment below.
only other way to get a copy onto your tab is to use a program to burn it then tranfer.

Ha ha -- and then they blame people for using torrents. They make it so difficult to even watch a movie they have sold you!
BTW, have they stated on the box that you can't watch the movie on a rooted device?
You have to download foxdigitalcopy app from market. Then it will work.

This doesn't work. When you are trying to download the digital copy per directions on how to transfer it from Pocket blu app it will still have the can't download movie because you are rooted. Fox digital copy only works when you have the movie already in your tablet then once located then it will grant it privileges. At least that's what I think it does.

(Are you asking if it's written on the dvd? No it doesn't.
It should still work... if your not rooted:/
It turned out that the whole Fox Digital Copy software on DVD that the feature which should allow you to transfer directly to Android phone/tablet doesn't work, according to Fox.
I got this from FOX and it works and I can play the film on the tablet
Hello Sir, you cannot do a direct transfer to a tablet. If you are using a non-Apple device, you must first transfer the digital copy with the code into Windows Media Player and sync it to your tablet so Windows Media Player can convert it properly for your device. The code is only for use in Windows Media Player. You do not need another code to sync it to your tablet or device when synced properly.
Please follow the appropriate instructions:
For Windows
1. Place the disc in your optical drive
2. Close any windows that automatically opens
3. Open My Computer/Computer
4. Explore the digital copy disc (view the files on the disc)
5. Open the DVDROM folder
6. Open the Media folder
7. Copy the movie file which contains PC in the file name to a location where you keep your movies on your computer (Do not put it on an external drive)
8. After the file has been transferred to your computer, double click on the movie file that is now on your computer
9. Windows Media Player should launch and request the serial number (make sure you have a valid working internet connection to verify the code)
10. After you have received a license, it will say click play to start the movie.
For iTunes
1. Launch your iTunes first (make sure there is no disc in the drive)
2. Insert the disc into your PC or Laptop
3. Close the auto play (pop up) window when it opens (will not be using it for transfer)
4. Double click on the movie title (Under DEVICES in the ITunes Window on the left hand side)
5. Enter the serial number (numbers only no dashes)
You should be prompted to enter your iTunes Store User Name and Password, please do not remove the disc until the transfer has completed.
Please ensure that your portable device is compatible with digital copy and Windows Media Player before attempting transfer (DOES NOT APPLY IF USING iTunes). For a list of devices other than iPods and iPhones that are compatible with digital copy please visit playsforsure.com. If your device is not listed here it is not compatible and the copy will not transfer. Devices that are listed may still require additional software from the manufacturer before the digital copy will transfer or play. Please research any device you wish to transfer digital copy to for compatibility issues.
Sony PSP and Microsoft Zune are not compatible with digital copy; all concerns with these two devices must be directed to the respective manufacturer.
For A Portable Device Transfer:
You must first transfer the digital copy into Windows Media Player or iTunes and then sync the movie to your device through Windows Media Player or ITunes so the program can convert the movie for correct playback on your device. Most players support MPEG4 (MP4), AVI or Real Player, some devices also support WMV, but not protected WMV (DRM). If your device supports DRM WMA, this is not the same and digital copy will not transfer. You may also require additional software from the manufacturer to convert the file to one the player supports. Please contact the manufacturer of your device to verify if it supports this file format, if it does not, your device is incompatible for transfer.
Many devices which cannot transfer digital copy through Windows Media Player can transfer files through the pocketblu app or media go app. Please consult with the manufacturer of your device to see if this is an option for your Digital Copy transfers as well.
You may read more information on this type of transfer here: http://www.pocketblu.com/DigitalCopy.aspx <http://www.pocketblu.com/DigitalCopy.aspx>
You may read more information about media go transfers here:http://mediago.sony.com/enu/introduction/ <http://mediago.sony.com/enu/introduction/>
For Windows Media Center Device Transfer:
Please ensure that your portable device supports protected (DRM) WMV formats before attempting transfer (DOES NOT APPLY IF USING iTunes).
1. Please verify that your device supports protected (DRM) WMV video before attempting transfer.
2. Transfer digital copy to Windows Media Player
3. Connect portable device after transfer has completed
4. Open Windows Media Player
5. "Click" on the "SYNC" button/tab
6. Click on Fox Digital Copy (under playlist)
7. Select the movie title and drag the digital copy to the sync list
8. Click start sync (if it does not do so automatically)
If you receive an error message that state your do not have enough rights or are missing codec files please contact your device manufacturer for assistance. Otherwise you should receive confirmation that the file is being converted, please do not interrupt the process as it may take several minutes
The digital copy should now be viewable on your portable device.
For Apple Device Transfer:
The process is simple, just go into your ITunes movie folder once you have transferred the digital copy into iTunes, locate the movie, connect your device (which should show up on the left hand side in ITunes) and just drag the movie from your ITunes movie folder onto your device. The movie will transfer and be ready to play. This is for Apple devices only (i.e. iPod, iPad, iPhone, etc.). All other brands of devices would transfer through Windows Media Player so make sure you transfer the digital copy into Windows Media Player and do not transfer the digital copy into iTunes if this is the case.
You can only transfer the digital copy to iTunes OR Windows Media Player but not both because the code is good only once and both programs require the code for the transfer.

[HOW TO] Stream 3D movies into your device from PC

This is a guide on how to put movies into your PC and having it to stream over to your device.
WHY ?
Of course we can definitely place movies into our device local SDCard and play through it but when you have a huge collection of movies, you would rather want to stream movies across than having to copy each movie and play it with under the restriction of your SDCard capacity.
WHAT DO I NEED ?
1) Software: TVMOBILI (http://www.tvmobili.com)
2) Wireless Network in which both your PC and HTC EVO 3D are connected to
3) Optional Software: HANDBRAKE (http://handbrake.fr)
HOW TO DO IT ?
A. SETUP YOUR PC
===============
1) Download and install TVMOBILI from the following website (http://www.tvmobili.com). It supports Windows, Mac and Linux as well. This software will be your streaming server (DLNA Compliant). Alternatively you can also use Windows Media Player as an DLNA server but I wont be covering on how to setup on that.
2) Once TVMobili had been installed, launch it by clicking on the TVMobili icon. It will launch TVMobili on your standard web browser
3) Add your movies into the server by clicking on the CONTENT icon and followed by ADD MORE CONTENT
4) Follow the steps provided and browse to the folders in which you had stored all your video files
*Refer screenshot 1*
B. STREAM TO YOUR DEVICE
=======================
1) Launch GALLERY from your HTC EVO 3D
2) You would see a list of local hosted content but we are interested in what's being hosted on the PC instead. Click on the WORD "Albums" on top and you will get a dropdown list of content source (Albums, Facebook, Flickr, Media Servers, Picasa Web Albums)
3) Select Media Servers and it will search for the list of DLNA servers in your network (Make sure you're connected to the WIFI network before doing so or it may not find the TVMobili server)
4) Your TVMobili server will be shown as TVMOBILI: where is the name of your PC. Click on it
5) Click on My Content and browse to the files you want to watch and it will stream over to your device
STREAMING 3D
============
You may be able to get your hands on 3D movies but using the above method may land you with a movie being played side by side. The only solution that I know of now is to re-encode the movie with additional settings by using HandBrake. The additional settings ":frame-packing=3" needs to be placed under the Advanced tab of HandBrake.

[Q] Any decent media player apps for TV box? SMB?

I've purchased a couple Android "TV Boxes" and was shocked to learn that none of the supplied software will play media from SMB/Samba/Windows shared network locations.
My boxes are running Android 4.0x, A9 single core at 1Ghz, Mali400 GPU's, 512MB + 8GB or 1GB + 4GB of memory.
Purchased them from DX.COM... sku 145311 and 157734 (I can't post URLs here)
Just a few of the apps I've downloaded and tested:
- XBMC: Used on my PC's, but too heavy for the Android boxes I have.
- BSPlayer
- Buzz Player
- MX Player
- Mobo Video Player
- Dice Player
- Movie Browser HD
- mVideo Player
Most of these don't support Windows shares very well, or are not user friendly.
Are there any decent media player applications that will do the following?
- Play media located on Windows or Samba shares
- Provide a simple interface so my kids won't get confused
- Play video, audio and pictures
- Possibly link to Netflix and/or YouTube accounts
- It would be great if it were a "launcher" app
Basically, I want a launcher type interface that operates like this:
- I add icons to the main screen.
- The icon can be associated with one or more local folders and/or windows network shares.
- The icon can have rules set to show or hide files and folders that..
- have a specific filename extension (.avi, .mp3, .jpg, etc...).
- that are hidden.
- files of a specific type.
- When the icon is clicked, show the contents of the associated that...
- Match the rules set up for the icon.
- Show thumbnails for files or folders, if available. (use folder.jpg for folder icons, for music or video, locate a .jpg/.png/etc. with the same filename as the movie or music file.
- Allow browsing folders with the same rules as the parent icon.
Alternately, does Android provide any way to set up a Windows share to look like a locally mounted device? This would make some of the players I've found more workable.
I know I'm being pretty specific, but I know what my wife and kids want when it comes to watching movies and playing music.
Any suggestions or ideas are welcome!
I do program... and if I were an Android developer I would try and whip up something. If anyone has pointers for developting an app with wifi, smb shares, ui and playing media on Android, please let me know!
Archos Video Player
Try Archos Video Player.. It has a good graphical interface..
