Coming from Mono to Shift ROM.
I used wireless tether on Mono without an issue.
HotSpot icon is on Shift, I click on it and a window pops up telling me to call a number for this feature. I am paying for it with Verizon and have been for some time now.

So, what do I need to do inorder for wireless tether to work again?

I can't say for sure, but I've heard of some ROMs where the native wireless tethering app doesn't work. Usually a third part app will, such as Wireless Tether.
1.4 has a fully working VZW HotSpot. Once you except you are good. As long as you pay for it. :

Strange indeed. I have paid for it since my Samsung Fascinate. Switched to TBolt and it worked fine. I have never dealt with 3rd party Tethering until I rooted and went to mono rom. Then I used the one that was built into that rom and not the VZ hotspot app. Now switching to Shift the 3rd party is not there and the VZ is. When I attempt to turn on the VZ app it gives me a window with 2 numbers to call to activate. I now have installed a 3rd party app and it works.
I just wonder if VZ somehow flagged my account since I used a 3rd party (free) version when I went to Mono.
The only tethering I have ever used is third party and I have not had any trouble.

So just curious, but Wireless Tether is just the 3rd party version/replacement for Verizon's Mobile Hotspot? Same purpose?

I've been searching for threads that directly compared them and got some answers, but I still have one question...
I got a Samsung phone with a T-Mobile tethering app built in, as well as the "Wi-Fi Tethering" app, which allowed me to tether for free. However, when my TABLET updated to ICS, it doesn't support Ad-Hoc anymore. I read that if I freeze Tethering Manager on my PHONE and use the native tethering app, it will allow me to broadcast an infrastructure tethering hot spot for free.
My rambling aside; Using too much tethering w/o paying is risky, but is there a real difference on T-Mobiles side if I use the native app vs the 3rd party app?
it is the same procedure equal on custom and stock roms so no.
Yes you can use it.
I just came across a free WiFi tethering application called FoxFi, which is available from the Android Market. This enabled WiFi tethering for non-rooted phones. Version 1.31 is still a beta, and I've only downloaded it a few minutes ago. But I am connected via my phone right now and it seems to work.

I just installed this app this morning and tested it out for about 5 mins and it worked great!
Anybody know how this will appear on AT&T's system? Easily figured out by the carrier?

I have yet to contact the developer, but on SGN, all it appears to do is modify your stock wifi sharing settings. I'll try on a razr maxx tomorrow and see if it's the same.
edit: appears to be same on the moto bionic. Double check under settings, wireless, mobile hotspot settings.
Not saying it shouldn't work as intended, but the fact that it shows up in the stock hotspot is slightly alarming.
Works great on samsung stratosphere all the other tether apps didn't work for me so this one is doing something different

I added foxfi and turned on wifi hotspot and it isn't showing up on my devices. When I turn on mobile hotspot it wants me to pay Verizon 30 extra to activate. How are you guys getting around this?

Works great for me too. But I am concerned about my bill. Haven't got any prompts to pay yet.

You shouldn't have to explicitly turn on WiFi. I think that's why you're getting the Verizon notice. Once you start FoxFi, everything is configured in that application.
I did have a problem where it - FoxFi - seemed to keep background sync turned on. But, I also had some other things going on with my phone at that moment, so I can't say for sure if it was FoxFi that was doing it. I'll try it again later to see if I can determine what was going on.
Sometimes you have to reboot the phone after installing/configuring the app the first time.
Always open the FoxFi app for configuring or toggling the app on and off.
When you turn off tethering you may have to toggle wifi on again since it turns off wifi.
When the Green Tethering Icon shows up in the notification bar, don't open it or select anything from there.
I have it on two Razr's working fine.
Great app works great on my razr but just doesn't work on the thunderbolt
finally
So far this app works better than the phone 's app and the android wifi tether app.
doesn't work on my rooted stock Asia ROM (latest update), whereas the Android Wifi Tether beta works well. I can connect momentarily, but the connecting device never receives an IP address. not sure exactly what's going on.

Ive had that same problem with android wifi tether. It would connect and process. But after 50 megs process it dies out. And no connection. Ive played with dns settings and channels and nothing to get consistant tethering till now. With foxfi that is. Sux its not working for you. The only thing i can suggest is try different versions of the wifi tether app. Before the first 2 updates on the US razr. I was using an older version of android wifi tether that worked smoothly. You just gotta try to find the one that works for you

Love this App, Works great!!!
This app works perfectly on my CDMA RAZR and my wifes RAZR MAXX. Been using it for a few days. Successfully tethered a PS3, B&N Nook Color, all of our Mac Computers. The only confusing point with this one was that you cannot shut down the hotspot from the notification pulldown area. You have to open the app back up and uncheck the box for enabling / disabling the hotspot. Not sure how this works for getting around the included hotspot app but if it works I guess I don't care. Two big thumbs up for this app!
just downloaded and hook my pc up and now im posting from my pc using my razr wifi tehetr on this foxfi app so sweet...thanks for share!!!!!!!!!!!
sorry my english bye....
Just installed in on my Razr Maxx and it's working beautifully!
Let me know if you get billed for this... not sayin you will but more for peace of mind.

Works on my Razor Maxx. Connected on my Xoom. With FoxFi I Might turn data off on my xoom and concentrate on my razor's data usage.
Can Verizon track the data usage?? I Don't have the unlimitied data usage.
Verified working on my Razr Maxx. Got a 7mbps down speed on a mediocre 4G signal on my Iconia tablet.
Ya about the people with HTC phones
"Message from team: some user recommended FoxFi in a popular deal website and the whole world come to install it. While this is awesome we have a hard time keeping up with our support emails. We are aware of some most reported issues: the Motorola Triumph crash will be fixed in our next update. Atrix 2/4G are not supported yet and we are looking into it. HTC phones users can only use Bluetooth mode. A WiFi hotspot lock exists in HTC Android that can not be bypassed and we are truly sorry."
Just notice that in the what's new section of the market place.
im grandfathered and friend of mine got his DNA and he doesnt like so we are swapping with my S3.
is the DNA can tricked by using the native tethering app?

I'm a noob....Define 'Native' Tethering App?
I have the DNA, rooted, and use Wifi Tether (App Store) with some modified settings and it works.

im referring to the tethering & portable hotspot. not the third party app
No it hasn't been hacked yet to bypass the check.
You used to be able to use the app "power toggles" I don't know how ir did it, but, when you used the hotspot toggle, it just turned on the naitive hotspot app and didn't check for subscription. Didn't even need root. I tested this one day at a haw store. Installed power toggles on like 8 of the display phones and turned on the hotspots, no security , with ssids like "free internet!" , "vzw free hotspot" and so on
Worked on all models lol

Red, would you mind to elaborate on your modified settings? I am having issues getting this to work.
Thanks!
I have looked and looked, but I haven't gotten a straight forward answer on this.
I don't want to root my phone. Which app still lets me tether without having to turn on the Verizon hotspot and get charged extra for that service? (much like Foxfi does for just about every other phone I've seen)
No, just use a widget.

What widget? I just bought the Note 2 a day ago so I am still trying to figure it all out. Came from a Moto Droid X so this thing feels light years ahead of me.
Any widget that toggles wifi tether.
search the play store.

Ok, now I feel like an idiot.
I just got the Note 2, and signed a new contract. Last time I signed a contract (2+ years ago), they wanted 20 something bucks for you to use their VZW Hotspot, so I always used Foxfi to get around it and just use up all of my data plan. I guess Verizon just got smart and made it free? :silly:
Had me worried when I kept downloading *Free Wi-Fi hotspot* apps and they kicked me over to the VZW app instead.
Thanks for the help!
Its not free but it is included with any of the new plans. If you still have unlimited data its still frowned upon. With that said yes you can use a toggle but the hotspot will drop data frequently. I recommend you root and install the wireless tether from google. Settings i use are S3 profile, netd-ndc setup, check th3 following: send netd, both wifi driver reloads, mss clamping, and router fix.

Try "elixir 2 widgets" which is different from "elixir 2" from the play store. Once installed create a widget on your home screen for wifi tether and it should bypass the vzw block. It worked on stock unrooted vzw build for me but now I dont need it. Yay!

I read that tethering is disabled if you have Tmos $30, 100 min, 5 Gb plan. Can you still tether if you are rooted and using an app like WiFi Tether?
I am with Sprint and have an HTC EVO 4G (questionable) LTE. I am considering switching to TMo and getting the HTC One, and use a VOIP app for calls. I only tether very occasionally, maybe once a month, for my Nexis 7. Typically, I work in various office buildings, and more often than not, they have WiFi. I only browse and email, never stream, so my usage is pretty low.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
You can tether with the 4g data plan with out any extra charges. The plan they block free tethering is when you're on the truly unlimited 4g plan with out caps.

So i won't need WiFi Tether? Any suggestions for a VOIP app? I have a Google Voice account, but I need a VOIP app to work with it.

I have the Unlocked Edition on the $30 prepaid plan and I've tried everything to get native tethering to work, web pages are just constantly redirected to Tmobiles website. When you log in theres an option to add tethering for 15/month. So in my experience no, there is no way to tether natively without root or paying another fee.
I was hoping, as I have the unlocked edition that isnt tied to any specific carrier (as in, stock rom with no carrier interference) that tethering would be unaffected but it seems they're blocking it server side. I even changed the UA of my browser on my computer to various mobile devices and other browsers and it still wouldnt work.
Thanks.

You can try spare phone for voip
If you were on an AOSP Rom it would work without issue. I tethered from a Galaxy Nexus Gigs to my Nexus 10 with the native tethering app without issue.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Yup, AOSP native tethering works fine. I've USB tethered my Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile's $30 plan several times with no issue, using the baked-in USB tethering option on CyanogenMod.

Get a browser-agent changer plugin for whatever browser you're using. And set it to some mobile browser.
What this basically does is, when the browser sends HTTP requests, it identifies itself as a mobile browser and so T-Mobile doesnt redirect the traffic to their advertisement.
Worked for me when I used to be on T-Mobile (bout a year ago)

In the very post of mine you quoted I said I already tried changing the User Agent string of the browser to several different things and it didn't work.
Oh wow, whoops. Didn't read properly.
Thats odd though. I wonder how they track you then

I was wondering the same thing, other then maybe because I was using the stock ROM's built in tethering option, but again since I have the carrier-less unlocked edition I wasnt sure how that could be the problem either. At some point I'm going to try the non-root clockworkmod tether in the market and see if that works.
