[Q] Anyone tried Amazon Prime or VOD? - TouchPad General

My free Prime trial is about to expire and I thought I'd check to see if it's worth keeping to use when my touchpad arrives since netflix doesn't seem to work currently. Has anyone with a Prime account tried to use it on the touchpad? It appears to run through Flash, but I don't know if it's blocked or if the Hulu fix works.

I would keep prime for the free shipping. Their on demand selection is pretty bad. I would test it out but i don't see anything that I want to subject my eyes to.

I don't order enough from Amazon for the $79 a year to cover the cost of the few things shipped. While the prime instant doesn't have the best selection there's still enough on there to watch to keep me occupied, just wanted to know if it works.

Yes VOD works, including HD. I have the Hulu fix installed, but I don't know if it's needed.

A few questions before I buy

So I've done some searching and reading here lately, and I have just a few questions before I finally make this leap. I'm ecstatic that the BL is finally unlocked. This is great!
First, I do some traveling and I love being able to plug a device in to a hotel TV and get decent video quality. Is the multimedia dock the only way to allow this? Specifically, I'm looking at streaming Netflix or Hulu. I usually don't travel with DVDs on my storage card, but I suppose I can if that's the only option here.
Second, how does anyone with the LapDock like it? I personally see myself using this quite a bit, as it would make life easier at work with a larger interface and full keyboard. Do you find it too cumbersome to travel with? Ideal when you'll be in one place for longer periods of time?
How's the video chat capability? With some travel, I like to be able to call my son when on the road. Does the front cam give decent quality?
Is there any video chat capability with the lapdock? I don't see a cam on the front of it, so I'm curious if the USB ports are usable with a webcam. This would also be ideal for the quick video conferences for work.
I've been waiting and waiting for something better to come along. However, a refurbed Atrix for $50, and a refurbed lapdock for $175 is pretty tough to pass up. Both for $225...or brand new for $300 after rebate.
Thanks for any help and insight.

There´s a hdmi mirroring mod and i think it will be includen in the custom roms coming soon so you dont need a dock

I like it very much and with the ability to use full ubuntu its great, having a little pc everywhere you go and just plug it in to a tv is really great

It´s ok, not comparable to the back camera but enough for video chat

AFAIK ther´s no cam in the dock but with the hdmi mirroring you can video chat on a tv, i dont know if you can plug in a webcam but with full ubuntu it should be possible
My advice: BUY IT
i dont think hdmi mirroring or webtop via hdmi is working YET in 2.3.4, but in 1.8.3 you are golden on both. with full ubuntu, there is no reason you couldnt use a webcam with the lapdock that i can think of, its essentially a computer, so as long as linux drivers are available for whichever webcam you choose to use, it should work.
Awesome! Thanks guys. Now to pull the trigger and get this thing ordered.
Just want to give my input on the lapdock. Its incredibly thin. and its a nice size. I picked up a refurbished unit from At&t for about 175.
Charges your phone too. I slapped debian on it, and it runs really nice!

Great to hear! I've been thinking about putting the full distro on there as well. I think this is a great concept and a fantastic start, even if there are some bugs/issues/features to address. I think this basic function and form will be around for a while, or at least I hope so.
On the dock, I'm assuming you've addressed the APN issue to take a grandfathered unlimited plan? That's my biggest concern: keeping unlimited data and being able to use webtop. I've read the dev forum, and it seems no one is having any issues with this, which is great.
I have unlimited. You just need to apply the tethering hack found in the dev forum, and you'll be able to keep your unlimited data!
By the way, if you're scared of receiving a bad refurbished dock, don't be. My dock looks and acts brand new

I've had pretty good luck with the refurbs before. Mine have always been brand new, but I've bought refurbs for others, and they've been flawless. I was a bit worried with the Atrix, but when I talked to my sales guy the other day he was telling me about 80% of the docks he sells are returned within 30 days. That gave me the idea to look at refurbs, and 175 isn't bad!
You'll have to get it online for the discount I believe. Free shipping too.

Yeah, that's usually how the refurbs work. I was just saying I got the idea from the salesman who said he's seen a lot returned. Now to just make sure they don't change my data plan That's always easier in the store!

[Q] GameStop - Returning open Prime?

Now that Asus has officially declared that there is a problem with gps I've decided to return my open TF201 to the GameStop that I bought it from. I've read some posts where folks said thay returned their prime for a full refund with no problem and other posts where a refund was refused. I am currently within the 30 day return period but the unit has been opened.
Does anyone have any advice on how to approach the local GameStop manager. My approach is to be honest, friendly and persistent. What response should I expect?
Don't return it over a GPS how many other devices do you have that have GPS cell phone check! Tom Tom check! Ect... Lol don't do it!
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Well seeing gps is not in the specs they probably won't do it.

Returned mine for a full refund...cash no less. I didn't speak with the manager I just went to the desk and told them since they didn't have any in stock for an exchange I wanted a refund. No questions asked and they didn't even open the box. After I got the cash I went back to my car to get them the charger and cable lol
if they give you any hassle, tell them to exchange it, and they will have to offer you a refund since there are none in stock.
but since GPS is listed on the box, and it doesn't work they would be hard pressed to try to refute your claims for it not living up to the specs.

Hate returning stuff
Well guys, I'm one of those people who hates to return stuff. But damn it, I don't think it's right for asus to be removing the GPS description and acting like it's nothing. I know some of you are saying you've successfully returned it. Anyone out there who wasn't successful? Cause I'm thinking of taking it back. GPS is not important to some people, it is to me and I want my 500 dollar tablet to work. I wouldn't even care if asus would fix this problem.

It's actually listed on Gamestop's own website as having GPS...
Yeah - I don't see why you should have any problem returning it - the GPS is included, and it's defective - plus, as already stated in this thread, they won't have stock to issue you an exchange...
asus hasn't said they are giving up on GPS, they are saying that GPS performance will never be excellent due to the design of the prime, because of that they are going to stop marketing the feature so that people won't try to buy it as a standalone GPS unit, but they will continue to make it work as best as it can.
we'll see what that ends up meaning over the next weeks/months, while mine gets a real finnicky lock on sats, it works well enough for what i generally need it for, which is opening google maps and seeing how to get somewhere or where some place is, which means i am connected to wifi, which means the a-gps works well enough to position me to accomplish that.
but i digress. i am also curious if anyone has been refused a refund by gamestop, because there is no way i would find that acceptable as a customer. no refund on opened video games makes sense, but if they try to push it on hardware, that's just bull****.
I'm waiting for ICS to come out and see if it fixes issues I'm having. If not then return it, repurchase SGT10 1 at Costco. I will then have 90 days to consider buying another prime or whatever next best thing to come out within the 90 day return policy.
Issues:
Screen brightness often times fluctuates under power saving mode, brightness lowest lvl.
Random shutdowns and takes several tries to get it to turn on.
Web browsing: Web pages sometimes flickers.

Ok so I called my Gamestop (Woodbridge, VA) about returning my TP and getting a refund. They had to call the distict manager to verify if I could get a full refund from it. The distrcit manager told them that I can return it to any store in the area. So tonight I am going to go to Gamestop and return it and now I have to find another one.

When you say "now I have to find another one", are you planning on getting another TF201?
Yes I am getting another TF201. I just ordered one from BB a few minutes ago. Lets hope that I don't get another dud! I really like the tablet, but mine had a few issues, no gps what so ever, minor screen bleed and no serial number. So I figure I give it another shot, if not then I will sell my TP and dock on CL/eBay. To let you know when I talked to my GS I acted like I wanted another one, which I do, and said that if you can't guarentee that I will have one on your next shipment that I would like a refund. I don't like having a defective item just sitting here and not being able to do nothing because you don't have any in stock. He said he had to get clearance from his district manager to do so. I let him do his thing and called back today and was told I could return it for a refund. That basically what I told him in a nutshell.

Prime from Walmart working ok...

Amazingly enough the Prime I bought from Walmart online the other day is working like it is supposed to be working. I've actually used my Bluetooth connection listening to music streaming down from Google Music and performed a speed test and still was about 20+Mbps speed using speed test. ALL the other units I had wouldn't even get 5Mbps. This is like the 3rd or 4th Prime I had. I can't even remember. And for those GPS people out there I was able to get GPS signal on a %100 humidity day in about 10 seconds. I have no idea what was done, but I'm not letting this one go. I've already sent all my Asus contacts a message asking if they can keep my RMA unit and just refund me the retail price of what I paid for it and to let me keep what I have.
Also the buttons seem easier to press. Like the power button. It has a more tactile feel then all the other ones I had. Along with the volume rocker.
My serial number starts with C20KAS......
FINALLY I'm done with all this BS, only until I get a refund from Asus hopefully. If they don't actually give me a refund I'll have to see what I'll do. I certainly don't want to be the owner of two Prime tablets, equaling over $1000 in price. Ouch!
I think you just got a good one.
I've had my prime since launch, got it from Best Buy, and i've never had one issue with it. GPS, WiFi, BT, and everything else works flawlessly. I do maybe have a "weaker" signal according to the bars on the screen, but I've never dropped a connection or had ANY speed issues.
Love my prime.
Cool story bro
This sounds like you think the tablet would be subpar because it was at a Walmart...

Good to hear! Asus must be getting its groove on. They must be working out the problems. The prime is one sweet tablet. I have my modded one still working. (for mobile applications... using in one of my vehicles.) But, I want a prime for couch / bedside surf! Walmart is cool about returns too. So If i order online I can easily exchange it a few time.... until i get what i want.

Not condoning what you said about stickers swap but it would go back to Asus anyways. It's not going to be put back out for sale when you tell them it don't work right. Walmart would just send it back to Asus, its policy. I tried to get an HP Touchpad someone was taking back a while back during the fire sale they wouldn't let me get it said policy says they have to send back to manufacture once opened.

Absolutely. Just do the right thing and be honest. He still has to look at himself in the mirror. And if committing this type of act doesn't bother the person, he has a bigger problem than we can help him with here.
Thanks again for speaking up and condoning honesty.

I'm all for being honest and legit, but if a lot of us are being bent over and screwed by a corporate monster we can never win with what are we supposed to do? Just sit back and let them do whatever they want? We need to stand up for ourselves.
If we aren't getting the appropriate satisfaction or expected support I really would love to know what to do that would give us our satisfaction within our return time policy time? After that return period is over, we are pretty much stuck with what we have.
I already asked Asus very kindly and eagerly if they would keep my RMA unit and just refund me my money because I purchased another prime that is working better turned me down instantly with no regard to my problem. I was backed into a corner like a caged animal with very LIMITED options. Since money doesn't grow on trees for me I'm at a loss on what to do or where to go. Asus doesn't respond to my emails anymore and these "updates" can't fix dead pixels either. I hope people understand where I'm coming from.
Wow! That's messed up. Have you tried explaining your situation to Gary?

What are you using to read WJS?

Did some searching and didn't really find my answer so going to post here let me know if this should have been in General.
What are you using to read the wall street journal?
I have seen 2 apps on my transformer prime when searching. There is the WSR (wall street reader) its a paid app for 6.09. I already pay WJS for access and think paying again for a reader sucks.
There is a WJS tablet but it does not show up on my prime, only in google market (web) Says its not compatable with my infuse nor my TFP, but will go to the Samsung note.
Then the last app seems not really made for a tablet.
So what are you using to read WJS, do I have to suck it up and buy WSR?
True i could go to the webpage but I was hoping for a local copy that I could read on the way to work.
Thanks
I think WSJ has Pressreader support?
If you have online account with WSJ, try this -
Pressreader - Settings - Accounts - Authorize (put your WSJ's username+password here)
Your subscription should appear.
WSJ Android App
The WSJ has an Android Tablet App. Scroll to the very bottom of the first online page and click on "tablet". It seems expensive at $4.00/week. I have a print subscription and will be giving them a call to see if they have any special offers for print subscribers. I agree that the current solutions in the Android Market don't work very well.
let me know if you find any thing out, please. My email seems to have fallen of def ears.

There are 2 apps for the WSJ, one designed for the tablet the other for your phone. The tablet app is pretty heavy, takes a long time to load and in general bogs down my Prime. The WSJ I have installed on my HTC Amaze is light and flys on the prime but like you said the market wont let you install it on the tablet, soooo....First you need to root your tablet, you dont need to unlock the bootloader just root it. I backed up my phone apps using titanium, once the prime has root I copied the titanium backup directory to my SD card and then restored the phone WSJ app, works great. The Washington Post also has an app for the phone only, did the same thing and it works as well.
Awesome will try it, I already have it rooted for adblock. Kinda sad really, when I rooted my phone I had a ton of things to do... I rooted my prime and I put adblock on and basically forgot I had it even rooted. Thanks for confirming I could just copy over the apk and install. I will post back my experiences in case anyone is watching... Ya I doubt it...
Thanks!

If you are tired of waiting for your GPS Dongle..

This seller seems to be getting stock in almost everyday. Some guy was selling them for 35, this guy is only selling for 6 bucks.

can't believe people are actually selling them. n how is he getting constant stock in of them? he might have gotten a few off of Asus mishap. but not constant flow of them coming in unless he scheming them.

Couldn't tell ya.
And not really, my whole family has TFPs and we all registered to get the Dongle. Could easily have been something like that.
But $35 bucks, really!? LOL
Just got another one from asus last week. That makes two for me and I only have one TFP.... LMAO
Guess I have one as a backup.
It works like **** with 15 but works great with 21. I always lost root with 21 even with root keeper installed

I've got just the one, but if i get a second one I'm gonna try and modify it a bit to boost the wifi and gps range. Has somebody done it ? I've looked around but I found only actual ATP moddings and no dongle mods .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633747
School started and i havnt had a lot of time to continue with the project, my next mod is opening the prime (for like the dozenth time) and throwing the antenna from the dongle in where the internal antenna for the prime is, see if that boosts anything.
Project isnt dead, just paused till i have a moment to work on it.
