Seems to be happening a lot with Hotspot + 4G on any rom I've used.
If I try and use 4G while on hotspot, it could work for a hour like it did this morning now 4G only works on the phone itself.
Now 3G on hotspot works perfect currently but kinda redundant when I wanna use the 4G feature, thus why I got the Thunderbolt.
Anyone else ever encounter issues with the Hotspot feature? Seems a lot of people do even if they are paying for it and not paying for it.
I am running Nons3ns3 on my TBolt Hotspot is real slow. I am in a 4g area and my phone shows 4g, but my download speeds are 1-2 mbps tops and it fluctuates. It just seems something is up.
I have tried Open Garden and Barnacle, both work about the same in terms of slow speeds.
Im getting the same exact results across 4 different ROMS I've flashed since I've had this phone. I'm on TheROM fyi.
I'm in the Chicago area on base and its good, but bloody hell Verizon doesn't have LTE top notch and I'm grandfathered in for the Unlimited plan still before they switched

Do any of the 3G Speed increase hacks (I read one that you have to add something to build.prop work for hte X2? My 3G speed honestly stinks, and i have full signal! It even stinks when im at work, which has Verizon Towers on the Building! At home i get about .33 Meg Down, .16 Meg up? Most i have seen is about 1.5 Down 2x since i had the phone.
I did this on my Nexus One and Nexus S, both on Tmobile, and It does work like a charm but I do beleive it is only for GSM devices......god i hate Verizon
I'm curious about this as well, but it seems like most of the people running 3G speed tweaks are on T-Mobile or other networks?
Also, I ran across a tutorial for pointing your 3G connection to OpenDNS servers. Has anybody here done this?
Data speeds have been horribly inconsistent since I got it. I have had several AT&T 3G phones in the same locations I'm using the Atrix and I can say with confidence it's not just the network. In the same spot at the same time a speed test will tell me ~3Mbps down ~1Mbps up and yet it will be horribly slow surfing the web. I'll bench it again a few minutes later and the speed test page won't even load. Apps will complain of no data connectivity and then boom, all of a sudden it's back. The whole time I'll have a 4-5 bars of service and my wife's iPhone sitting right next to it has no problems. Many times I have to reboot the phone to get data service back. Sometimes the data speed is so good I think I left the wifi on. That rarely lasts however.
I have tried nearly every "ROM" and radio in the dev section. I'm currently running the latest AT&T radio and CherryBlur. Is the radio in this thing just a PoS? I was thinking of having it swapped anyway since the front facing camera is completely blocked with pocket lint.
I just got the Atrix as a company phone. I traded in my company iPhone 4 for it for a couple of reasons.
1.) I prefer android phones
2.) I have an upcoming trip to Europe and thought I would have an easier time using the Atrix over there than the iPhone.
3.) I have an android tablet that also has a Tegra 2 chip in it so I thought I could run of the of the games I got for my tablet on this phone.
4.) Both my personal and work cell phones were 3G phones.
After having it for only 2 days, I am not a fan. I noticed the crappy data speed and also have suffered the network not available errors.
I have a rooted Droid X as a personal phone and I absolutely LOVE it. I travel for business and pleasure and when I do I usually take both my work phone and personal phone and I consistently see I get a stronger and better signal from my Verizon Droid X phone. Even when I had the (AT&T) iPhone 4 (3G) I saw the weak signal and slow speeds.
Anyway, back to the topic of this thread. Yes, you're not alone. This Atrix is pretty disappointing being a "4G" phone and all. Last night while at home I tried watching videos from several sources on this Atrix. Fox Television, Hulu Plus, and Crackle all complained about "a network error" and would take forever to load a video if it didn't error out first and then it was really poor quality complared to what I experience on my old 3G Verizon Droid X. If that wasn't bad enough I even got the network errors popup when I would move around in the Market looking at apps and such.
I am planning on upgrading my personal phone to the Droid Bionic when it is released next month but alas that phone is not "global ready" so I will see what I can do with this Atrix once I get root on it just so I can have a "world phone" as a backup.
Atrix 4G HSDPA+ speeds
I'm glad I'm not the only one!
I'm currently just outside of Princeton, NJ... running the speedtest.net application:
H+ data, 4-5 bars connectivity
Ping: 99ms
Download: 53kbps (yes, k)
Upload: 90kpbs
I regularly measure in the 50-80kbps speeds.
When I got my Atrix, I figured HSDPA+ would be faster.....
(yes, I made sure nothing else was using CPU or the data connection - I run this test regularly).
Admittedly, in other areas I've seen as high as 1 Mbps, but it's consistently bad in this area, even given an apparently strong signal.
I do not share your frustrations. I am on Bell in Canada and average 2 mbps down / 1 mbps up. That's blazing fast for Canada in my books!
Maybe flashing up the latest radio by kenneth (in dev section) may be of some help.

Huh???
Look in your settings/about phone and post what network type and radio version you have on there. You should certainly be on HSPA+ now with the rest of the US and probably world.
Is it the phone or the network? Just asking since I have both an AT&T phone and a Verizon phone and have noticed network and download speed issues and am really disappointed with my Atrix.

The network severely limits non-iphones. Same deal with HTC Inspire, Samsung Infuse, etc. I can usually hit 3-4 MB/s down, 1.5 MB/s up. That's not 4G. It's not the Atrix causing this.
Sorry if this has been asked before, I could not find it anywhere...
With my Evo LTE, if I have no 3G signal, I get no data at all (not using wifi). Is there supposed to be 1x data? With my Epic, I would bounce between 3G and 1x while at work, getting about 60 Kbps (horrible I know, but at least it worked). Now with my Evo, I either get 3G or nothing. Most of the time I get an error that there is no network connectivity, where with my Epic I never got that, it just worked slower at times.
So, is it a configuration issue, does the Evo not support 1x, or could I possibly have a hardware issue? I have domestic data and voice checked.
Well, this EVO does not want you to know whether you are connected with 1x vs 3g. So, on stock it will ALWAYS show as 3g. This is why you are going from 3g to no connection whatsoever.
If you are rooted, install a custom ROM as they all have the option of including this modification. If you would like to keep your current set-up, there is a thread to walk you through the necessary changes.

On a side note, the EVO also gets horrible reception in general. So although you will have a better idea of what your connection is, the fact of the matter is that your reception is probably not as good as it was with a previous phone.

Well, at least it makes me feel better knowing that it isn't a hardware issue. My voice reception seems better with this phone than my Epic, but data, not so much. Maybe LTE will magically fix all my issues? Other than a dead pixel, screen being a little washed out compared to SAMOLED, and reception issues, I still like my phone. Not sure if the SGIII would have better data reception where I'm at. Sucks that I have unlimited data, but just can't get at it.
I'm not convinced.
the first day our two after I got my phone, I had the same problem.
I tried changing from CDMA & LTE to CDMA only. That didn't help.
I then rebooted my phone. After that, data seems to work fine. My display sometimes shows bars with 3G, and sometimes simply bars only.
Before I rebooted, it never showed 3G.
I had even started a thread about it. But it seems to work fine now.

Has anyone tried to use verizons' mobile hotspot with this yet? Every time I have tested it out it reduces the signal from 4G to 3G and never returns to 4G until I deactivate the hotspot. Anyone know if this is a design in the phone or maybe something I am doing wrong?
I'm new to verizon like as of two days ago and Ive been with sprint. Does verizon make you pay an extra fee to use the tethering service like sprint because i can turn on the hotspot and connect to it and its says its using 3G but i dont get any internet service to my tablet.

The way I understand it is if you can access the service then it is part of your plan. Which is nice so you dont accidentally use it and get charged a boat load. I just moved to a share everything plan and was told by a rep that mobile hotspot comes included, which seems to be true since I am able to use is, even if only on 3G.
At the same time, I am able to use the mobile hotspot through a Rezound on the same plan with 4G all day long. That is why I am curious if it is the phone limiting my connectivity while using hotspot.
I am currently testing the mobile hotspot as I am writing you. I figured I would try it out since I've not used it as of yet on my new DNA. 4G is working and intact. No downgrade to 3G, and everything is speedy as expected. I would check your signal strength or other possible issues you may have with reception, as if I understand things correctly, a 4G connection will degrade to 3G in bad connection areas. Maybe your signal strength isn't acceptable? Just a thought. Maybe someone here has a better understanding of the underlying operations of what your particular issue could be. Good luck...

I guess I figured out what my problem was. I just restarted my phone and tested again and it works perfectly. I dont know what its malfunction was but its all good now.
First of all, I live in a suburb of Dallas which is completely covered in LTE according to Sprint's coverage map and I can affirm this by Sensorly and my own personal usage of my phone when I see 4G LTE in many places. However, lately I have noticed on the bottom floor of my house I usually get 1X or 3G, whereas upstairs I get 4G quite nicely. In other houses nearby (less than 1 mile), my phone doesn't even get data many times (and if it does, it is 1X) whereas other Sprint iPhone 5's are enjoying LTE in the same location.
Now I know our phone's have connection issues, but why am I not even getting 3G? Is there anyway to help force my phone to try and get more 4G signal because I know for a fact Dallas has pretty decent 4G coverage? When my phone goes into 1X it also seems to be sucking up quite a bit of battery. Any help is appreciated!
I am running MeanBean 3.09, S-ON, with the newest Bulletproof Kernel.

MeanBean has the Roam only option baked in, just go to settings - mobile network and set it up... The battery drain is "normal" when the phone doesn't have a good signal... Roam or use wifi... I know it doesn't make sense but that's the now network...
