compared to the evo 3d - Motorola Photon 4G

hey folks sorry if this not in right spot but...... am about to get my upgrade on sprint and am looking at the photon or the evo 3d. was wondering what some of you thought about the differences in these two phones and which seems to be the better of the two. ive read the specs and from what i can tell other than not having a gimicky 3d button the photon is the better phone. could someone who has one of these kinda shed some light on me? thanks

Of course everyone on this particular forum will tell you the photon. do some more research and the better phone should be obvious.

Wrote a lil ditty on just that question...

Of course i've had the Photon much longer, now and am much more in love with it, but this was my initial impression. Hope it helps!

Good review, I read through the whole thing. Dig it.

Well if you want better quality in signal and such the photon is for you.
I can get the Epic 2 but I'm up in the air about what I'll be missing :/

AJC. Do you have any details on that phone? Release dates, specs etc. If you could PM them to me. Thanks!

Its been out for a good week now bubb lol Its called the Epic Touch.

Oh. There is an actual epic 2 coming out soon. Modeled off the Epic 4G.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

Yea? where did you see that? Would be nice if its like the Epic Touch but with a keyboard and faster lol

From what I read, but who knows how legit it is. It's gonna be a 1.2 ghz single core, better screen, and qwerty keyboard just like the Epic. I searched Epic 2 on google, and came up with a few things, so you might try that.

In all honesty, whatever you get right now is gonna work great for right now... If you really want something better, hold out for Kal El and Ice Cream Sammich. That's what's gonna be better than what's out now...

It's for my gal, not me. She HAS to have the qwerty keyboard so that's why I was interested in the Epic 2. I'm quite happy with my photon, and will probably be waiting until something better comes out. As I don't think the Prime is gonna be all that great either.

I agree, the guy is hilarious. And I generally agree with everything flossycarter says 100%.

Cant really go asking a for comparisons between the Photon and the EVO 3D in the Photon section. See, generally, the folks that lurk around here love this phone and will glare at you whit fierce hate for even mentioning the EVO. And for good reason.
The Photon is a hell of a phone. Why? Because it is first and foremost exactly that: a phone. It is not a fancy gadget that just happens to make calls and because of the Moto antennae that go into it, you can really tell the difference once you've used them both for a decent amount of time.
Besides, it's Tegra II, so this phone has pull with is nVidia geeks as well.

I owned both the EVO 3D and the Photon as well as the EVO 4G. The 4G was better than the 3D minus speed, and sharpness. The photon blows them all out of the water . The only thing I wished that it has was a larger screen like the EVO 4G, but it is just as awesome as it is. The EVO 3D kept dropping calls. The EVO 4G had a great radio for signal also.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the EVO 4G have a 4,3inch screen?
The Photon has the same screen size with a larger resolution (540 x 960 pixels compared to the evo 4g's 480 x 800 pixels)

Duh.....get your math on Mr .......... 4.3 they may be but the EVO 3d is longer and narrow, where as the EVO 4G is shorter and wider. Basic geometry there bud; out side of resolution; which I did make a reference to. Own both then come again and make a valid point. "Not trying to be a wise ass here either." The Photon is in the middle screen size ind the width department, but functions as a phone way better

I just came from the evo 4g to the photon 4g. All i can say is its great i will also say i live in a fringe area and the photon hangs on to signal like no other phone. Plus dont forget that if sprint drops evdo rev. B the photon will be able to take advantage of that.

It is stated as the PG86100 in the /system/customize/CID/default.xml, which is the model number for the HTC Shooter/Evo 3D. Hmm...interesting.
EDIT: Looks like there is an earlier version w/ 2.3.2 out in the world somewhere.

Yeah and the ADR6350 is evidently the Inc2 http://androidevolutions.com/tag/htc-droid-incredible-2-adr6350/
Whats odd is that in that thread alone you see referenced 3 different model #'s.
1)PG86100 in the /system/customize/CID/default.xml that TMartin noted
Then from build prop that xHausx noted:
2)ro.product.model=ADR6350
3) ro.product.model=PH44100

Looks like it's definitively not the Evo 3D, but rather a slightly smaller phone with specs more like the Sensation: HTC Kingdom for Sprint fully exposed
Looks pretty nice, actually. I might actually consider getting it over the Evo 3D, depending on how both end up being priced.

Mainly I prefer the 4" size, plus I assume it will be significantly thinner and lighter without the extra camera (which I seriously doubt I'll use with any regularity once the novelty of the 3D wears off). True the the specs are lower, but really only just barely. It'll still be above the vast majority of other phones on the market. I actually originally planned to get the Nexus S 4G for that reason (smaller, lighter, but still with a nice big screen), but was disappointed with the flimsy, plasticky feel of the thing when I handled the T-mobile version, and decided to go with the Evo instead. The Kingdom looks to be basically what I wanted from the Nexus, but better-spec'd and with HTC's superior build quality and design.
That said, I may still end up going with the Evo anyway.

[Q] Should I get a Photon?

Hey guys and girls,
I'm coming back to the smartphone world - had a Droid and an EVO. Loved them both. I see that the Photon's bootloader is unlocked - but it drops 4G access, etc.
is this ever going to change? with the release of the source is development for the phone going to pick up?
I cannot wait any longer to get a phone. At this point my choices are EVO 3D or a Photon, (and maybe returning either for a SGS2 once it releases and I see how it fares)
If you were in my shoes, had to get a phone tomorrow - would you get the Photon or the EVO 3D?

I'm not worried about the 3D - I'm worried about the future of the device. It seems the dev community for the EVO 3D is much larger at this point and I'm worried that development for the Photon won't get as far because of the issues with 4G being dumped, etc.
I've owned motorola and htc devices before, like i said, and I liked both - I just want to make sure that I can customize it through ROMs and still have full functionality.

In my opinion, those reviews come from EVO 3D and wannabe GS2 owners. Haters are gunna hate.
As an analogy, I believe that part of the issue is that standard def signals are being put into an HD screen. You know, a standard TV actually looks better than an HD TV with a standard signal because the HD TV shows the flaws. Just my2cents.
Not to mention the inability of Samsung to stay on top of development for their products...terrible in my opinion...

defiantly Photon, Evo 3D has horrible service, and the Photon just runs smoother in my opinion
For what its worth I traded my Evo3D for the MoPho, mainly because of battery life. I've been thrilled with it. MoPho vs SG2... well, thats a different issue.
I think my main complaint with the MoPho is that the USB and HDMI ports cannot be used when using the kickstand. I know why they did it, to sell more docks, but its annoying as hell and makes the stand damn near useless IMO. Got rid of Blur almost immediately with launcherpro so no problems there. The thing has already been rooted, easily, and the kernal release its a matter of weeks before ROMs start to land..
For sure go with MoPho over the evo3D. People who say that the 3D's battery life "isn't that bad" are lying to your face.

Photon 4G HANDS DOWN!
First off, let me preface this by stating I am a die-hard EVO 4G backer! That phone has been the best phone (so far) I have ever owned! Hands down! Now, I am a business owner and require a sturdy, reliable, functional phone to conduct my daily business.
I have owned a Samsung Nexus S, Photon 4G, and an EVO 3D. They all have their issues. But in terms of signal strength, call quality, loudness, speed, battery life, and overall functionality, FOR ME... hands down...the Photon 4G performed the best.
The EVO 3D is fast and pretty but for what I need it to do, it sucks! I have had random reboots, weak signal strength, call drops, the speaker quality sounds like crap compared to the photon, BATTERY LIFE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!, and to top it off, I use square to collect payments from clients and when I connect it, the 3D thinks it is headphones and starts to play my music player! Let's just say some clients aren't really big Tupac fans as I am! Then when i am finished with the transactions and unplug the square device, I can ONLY talk to people using the speaker phone UNTIL I reboot the phone.
I love HTC from a development standpoint, but rooting and dealing with the 3D doesn't take on the same amount of ease as the OG 4G did. I love trying out different ROMs but from a business standpoint, I need functionality and dependability. I know some of you may say 'maybe you just had a lemon'. Let's just say that after the third 3D from different lots, I would say 'nyet'!
The Photon is not without its issues but for my requirements, Motorola Photon is my choice. Launcher pro took care of the motoblur issue. I will say this...the moment there is a AOSP ROM out for the photon, I will be getting it!
I loved the Samsung Nexus S for its smoothness. Didn't have major issues although the signal strength was a little weak and the loudness (ear piece, ringers, and speaker) sucked. Looking forward the the Epic 4G touch (SGS2)!
Regards,
Robert

As for the 4g, source code has only been out for a day. It is being worked on and for sure will soon have custom kernels and unlocked bootloader w/everything working. Peeps just need to have a little patience. This phone got root almost right out of the gate not to mention we already have custom recovery. From my perspective, developement of the Photon is moving ahead rapidly. Phone has only been out for little over a month.

Amen to that statement.
Yeah, they do have a beautiful screen but considering the number of times that Samsung's dropped the ball in supporting their products after its released with timely fixes and maintenance releases, endless delays for upgrading to the latest Android platform, not to mention being notorious for having a lousy GPS function, I'm a bit surprised that anyone is considering one of their phones as a viable option.
As G W Bush would say, "There's an old saying in Tennessee that we also have in Texas. Fool me once, shame on you.... Fool me, can't get fooled again."
No thanks Samsung. Your beautiful screens are great on televisions. But I don't care to have one on my phone if you can't support them after making them.

What's wrong with a little positive?
Lol.... Kinda the reason why I posted the thread I did. Just wanted to make sure the devs here know I appreciate their work. They are the true backbones in the android world. Google had the idea first, but the devs over there unfortunately have to design it for everybody, not just us who like to tinker. So that's where communities like this one are so valuable, and why Linux/android was the best idea for smart phones since the smart phone was invented.... Everybody is happy.

Virtually every single issue I had with this phone was software related, and with the 2.3.4 update from HTC, almost all of them are gone.
This phone is great and from a software standpoint, it's almost there too.
HTC EVO 3D 9/10 and easily the best phone I've owned to date.
But then again, so was the EVO 4G and Touch Pro2.
HTC EVO 4G 8/10
HTC Touch Pro2 9.5/10 (while it scored higher, this was due to how awesome HTC Sense and Windows Mobile 6.1 were for me at the time and its worldphone capability. There was nothing I couldn't do with that phone.)

My evo3d has been perfect from day 1.
I never had to do a return, and any issues that I did have, like crummy 3g, etc., were solved after a little reading on my part...(not by taking the phone back six times). Do I have a dead pixel? I don't think so, but if you held a magnifying glass to my phone and told me that I did, I wouldn't be surprised...(same thing goes for my screen possibly being tilted by one pixel as well). I seriously do not get it when I see complaints like that. I don't measure the pixels on a new TV, nor do I measure the carpet trim under the doors when I buy a new car, to make sure the "shag ratio" is correct.
So yeah, I'm still loving every bit (pun intended) of my Evo3d.

[Q] What the hell!?

Why is the MoPho getting no love from Devs at all!? There like 2-3 people actively developing for us...and I completely appreciate their efforts. The Bionic already has more Roms and what not...its crazy...The MoPho is an awesome high end phone with virtually identical specs (besides 1080p video capture)as the Bionic yet I hardly ever hear anything about it...Hhhhh ok I'm done venting. Thank you.

Part of the popularity is because of the Droid name and the fact that Verizon markets more. I know I have seen a ton of commercials about the Bionic but maybe only one or two about the Photon.
Sprint seems to be spending money on marketing the Epic Touch.
But yea....it is annoying.
Ya, I definitely understand the popularity of the Droid name...I came from the OG Droid and have friends with various Droid devices...But I really think the main factor is the network...theres nothing wrong with Sprint...but regardless of all that, the specs speak for themselves...This phone is awesome...I think I've noticed the lack of attention so much cause there's countless ROMS and Kernels and Dev support for the OG Droid...all I can do is wait I suppose..

The main thing with the Photon is it is geared towards business more. The Bionic is more pronounced as a game/every day device. I love the Photon and it is certainly lives up to my expectations, but I am waiting for the quad cores to hit next spring and then I'll move towards that. But with the better build Q of Moto devices I may never go back to Samsung again.

Coming from a e3d there is nothing but crickets in here, Keeping fingers crossed and hope for some more development in the Photon section. In the end though very happy with the purchase, phone is very fast, and everything is working that I need to work.
Mostly because marketing for this phone has been abysmal. That and the fact that it's a /world/ phone only sold in the /USA/.
DERP.
If this was launched internationally I'm wiling to bet we'd be up to our necks in activity in the photon section.
I'm not too worried tho', this phone is great straight out of the box. Only thing that I'd like to have as an option is CM7
There isn't much development work, cause this phone kicks ass with no root... Kinda hard to improve on perfection...

I would have to agree with this. I can't say that I'm coming from a cell phone world though. The Photon is my first cell phone ever. I have a lot of experience with tech and a lot of my friends were supprised that this was my frist cell (they all thought I had, had one for years) but I did do a lot of research before my decision. I knew about the 3D, The Bionic and Galaxy SII, heck even the iPhone 5 (I have an iPod Touch and like it but I love widgets and being able to make something my own).
The Photon was the phone for me out of them all. HTC like Motorola usually has great software support but Photon was a world phone and I do travel from time to time. Samsung has a bad rep for software support. Google had just bought Motorola. iPhone is a neat mp3/game player but I want a phone too.

You must be new to XDA. There is always something that can be done. Overclock, underclock, undervolt, tether, full Ubuntu in webtop, cyanogenmod, miui, themes, porting from other phones, I think you get my picture

Yeah there is a lot of stuff that can be done. I haven't really messed with the webtop though.
Agreed....
I think it's just lack of advertisement. I'm from Russia but I sitiing in American segment of internet and I never saw any Photon adv or posts about it, but endless river of samsung or htc crap.
Also I guess I was just spoiled with evo development. Wish I were younger and had the time I would try to develop. I think I am going into flash withdrawal lol.

I would love to dig around and learn but I have 5 kids at home and that allows very little time..
For me, I'm totally diggin' the phone the way it is.. stock/rooted. I don't feel anything 'needs' improved.. I mean sure, things can always be tweaked for the sake of tweaking (undervolt, overclock, etc.) but for me, there really aren't any other necessities besides CM7 and that's in the works.. so, for me, I'm good.
If I felt the phone was lacking somewhere, I'd certainly feel motivated to learn about ROM building etc.. but I could care less.. hehehe..
Again, I'm patiently awaiting CM7.. other than that, this device is bad ass !!
Im still loving the stock rom, I would love to make some roms/themes anything like that as well, but I only know a half-assed ammount about that stuff, and Im guessing everyone doesnt want a half-assed rom
I CAN however offer hosting to any of the MoPho Devs I have unlimited bandwidth and space on my server
Shabby. can you point me to a good starting point on making a ROM. have no problem trying just don't know where to start. had evo before this and there were so many roms there was no point in trying.

I would stick with the Evo 3D. Once you play some 3D games or watch some 3D movies, you will see that it's an awesome feature to have the 3D. If you want better performance and don't care about the 3D features, you can install an AOSP rom. I think the Evo 3D is some of the best hardware out there right now.

Try the EPIC 4G Touch forums as most people only have one phone, and most of the people who frequent the EVO 3D forums have the EVO 3D and not the EPIC.
Good luck to you! I actually just traded back to the EVO because of personal tastes phone-wise but the SGSII is very very nice! I loved It's camera and SAMOLED cannot be beat!

looks like im gonna just stick with it
I've have both. Evo 3D is my choice. In fact I gave my SG S2 to my neice for Christmas. Evo 3D is nicer. Not as snappy but the hardware is real quality.
I recently picked up the Evo 3d, and my dad got the E4GT. I've played with both, and while I will say that out of the box the E4GT does feel much more snappy, the combination of the size, "premium" feel (build quality), ROM options, features, and just overall fun, the Evo 3d wins all day. Plus, I am not a huge fan of Touchwiz, and I love Sense, so it's a no brainer for me. Good luck with your decision!
The epic touch 4g is huge compared to the Evo 3D. I actually wish the 3D was closer in dimensions to the evo 4G. I prefer the wider device, vs taller. The ET4G is both wider, and taller than the 3D.
But to your trade question, you will probably need to pony up some $$ with the trade, as the ET4G has a higher resale value at this time.
@OP I am glad you stuck with the 3D. Here in Atlanta at the Sprint service center they are constantly having issues with the SGSII dropping calls, GPS issues, and random reboots. people have been coming in and trading for the E3D.
I recognize that this may not be across the board, but when Sprint's own techs all have E3Ds and say they wouldn't touch a SGSII, that is an indicator to me.

While my experience is just anecdotal, but my wife and I have the same issues as the ET4G users, and I have a Evo 3D, and she has a Evo 4G. It's completely tower related, for me though, because if I leave the tower covering my house, I have almost no issues. But at home (my work is also on the same tower), I don't receive calls, sometimes texts don't go through, sometimes have no data, dropped calls, and I get random reboots. I'm in the Atlanta area.
I have both to .. the s2 is more my fav but I am such an HTC fan that I love the 3d to LOL

Samsung is just bad ...they're all about quantity over quality. Tell me why my buddy sitting right beside me on break at work can't get a signal to browse the web or check Facebook but I have no problem doing so...? His ssg2 is pretty ..but it's still Samsung crapola

Unfortunately, all companies are like this now. I remember HTC had dust under the screen issues with the Hero. Issues with the covering on the buttons coming off. The Evo 4G had light leakage issues, stuck pixels, and the digitizer not attached firmly to the body of the phone (usually only one side was affected). But, it looks like HTC has spent more time on QC on their hardware lately, when I look at my 3D. Now, when we pick a phone, we must choose the one that looks to be the lesser of all evils.
That's pretty much what I did... gave mine to someone I know that wanted the 3D and just paid the $199 for the upgrade on their account and swapped it out. Honestly I hated that I even wasted my upgrade on the 3D after a while... I think I used the 3D features maybe a week or two before forgetting all about em. IMO, pretty much everything was an upgrade but it's all personal preferences. Had I not been having some medical issues right after I bought it I would've returned it though.
And to the person that says Samsung cares about quantity over quality, let's not sit here and act like HTC has done anything to improve the issues these phones have had since the Evo came out. You'd think by now they'd be able to make a phone without the massive light leakage at the bottom but they're yet to even try to fix it. And let's not forget the debacle with the touch pro where probably 1 out of every 3 of them had the keyboard to go dead. And I won't even start on the tons of problems we had with the Thunderbolts. All of these companies are about the money first, that doesn't mean they have to sacrifice anything. Hell no one is more about money than Apple but they still consistently have the best build quality out there.
And personally between the last HTC phones ive had, i've had more problems than i've had with the GS2. But hey, that's just me.

The Epic 4G is just too damn wide. I almost bought it before I held it. The Evo has great dimensions. Plus the low resolution will be annoying.
I have a Nexus S too and the resolution isn't great even on the 4" screen. It'll be awful on 4.5.
