Why is the MoPho getting no love from Devs at all!? There like 2-3 people actively developing for us...and I completely appreciate their efforts. The Bionic already has more Roms and what not...its crazy...The MoPho is an awesome high end phone with virtually identical specs (besides 1080p video capture)as the Bionic yet I hardly ever hear anything about it...Hhhhh ok I'm done venting. Thank you.

Part of the popularity is because of the Droid name and the fact that Verizon markets more. I know I have seen a ton of commercials about the Bionic but maybe only one or two about the Photon.
Sprint seems to be spending money on marketing the Epic Touch.
But yea....it is annoying.
Ya, I definitely understand the popularity of the Droid name...I came from the OG Droid and have friends with various Droid devices...But I really think the main factor is the network...theres nothing wrong with Sprint...but regardless of all that, the specs speak for themselves...This phone is awesome...I think I've noticed the lack of attention so much cause there's countless ROMS and Kernels and Dev support for the OG Droid...all I can do is wait I suppose..

The main thing with the Photon is it is geared towards business more. The Bionic is more pronounced as a game/every day device. I love the Photon and it is certainly lives up to my expectations, but I am waiting for the quad cores to hit next spring and then I'll move towards that. But with the better build Q of Moto devices I may never go back to Samsung again.

Coming from a e3d there is nothing but crickets in here, Keeping fingers crossed and hope for some more development in the Photon section. In the end though very happy with the purchase, phone is very fast, and everything is working that I need to work.
Mostly because marketing for this phone has been abysmal. That and the fact that it's a /world/ phone only sold in the /USA/.
DERP.
If this was launched internationally I'm wiling to bet we'd be up to our necks in activity in the photon section.
I'm not too worried tho', this phone is great straight out of the box. Only thing that I'd like to have as an option is CM7
There isn't much development work, cause this phone kicks ass with no root... Kinda hard to improve on perfection...

I would have to agree with this. I can't say that I'm coming from a cell phone world though. The Photon is my first cell phone ever. I have a lot of experience with tech and a lot of my friends were supprised that this was my frist cell (they all thought I had, had one for years) but I did do a lot of research before my decision. I knew about the 3D, The Bionic and Galaxy SII, heck even the iPhone 5 (I have an iPod Touch and like it but I love widgets and being able to make something my own).
The Photon was the phone for me out of them all. HTC like Motorola usually has great software support but Photon was a world phone and I do travel from time to time. Samsung has a bad rep for software support. Google had just bought Motorola. iPhone is a neat mp3/game player but I want a phone too.

You must be new to XDA. There is always something that can be done. Overclock, underclock, undervolt, tether, full Ubuntu in webtop, cyanogenmod, miui, themes, porting from other phones, I think you get my picture

Yeah there is a lot of stuff that can be done. I haven't really messed with the webtop though.
Agreed....
I think it's just lack of advertisement. I'm from Russia but I sitiing in American segment of internet and I never saw any Photon adv or posts about it, but endless river of samsung or htc crap.
Also I guess I was just spoiled with evo development. Wish I were younger and had the time I would try to develop. I think I am going into flash withdrawal lol.

I would love to dig around and learn but I have 5 kids at home and that allows very little time..
For me, I'm totally diggin' the phone the way it is.. stock/rooted. I don't feel anything 'needs' improved.. I mean sure, things can always be tweaked for the sake of tweaking (undervolt, overclock, etc.) but for me, there really aren't any other necessities besides CM7 and that's in the works.. so, for me, I'm good.
If I felt the phone was lacking somewhere, I'd certainly feel motivated to learn about ROM building etc.. but I could care less.. hehehe..
Again, I'm patiently awaiting CM7.. other than that, this device is bad ass !!
Im still loving the stock rom, I would love to make some roms/themes anything like that as well, but I only know a half-assed ammount about that stuff, and Im guessing everyone doesnt want a half-assed rom
I CAN however offer hosting to any of the MoPho Devs I have unlimited bandwidth and space on my server
Shabby. can you point me to a good starting point on making a ROM. have no problem trying just don't know where to start. had evo before this and there were so many roms there was no point in trying.

I have my MoPho rooted but there are only 2 roms for it. If you go over and look at the Atrix developers forum they have a ton of support.
The phones are similar, why isn't there much rom development for the Photon as there is the Atrix.
Does anyone know if the Cyanogen Mod is going to be made to work for the photon?
before anyone else says it. GO LEARN HOW TO DEVELOP AND MAKE YOUR OWN ROM
just saving everyone the trouble. i dont really mean it lol
We got source last week and the devs disappeared we will have new roms real soon

Well that would be useful if I had time to learn everything and create roms myself.
the sgs2 for sprint was announced. this phone was horribly placed in terms of release dates. a lot of people jumped on the evo3d bandwagon, now the sgs2 is coming out soon and not too long after is the release of the new nexus.
once the epic touch is released expect these forums to die down a lot more... unless the et4g sucks... in which we might get a few more users
I heard the et4g kills baby kittens. Does that help?

I'm out of thanks for the day, but you will get one soon enough from me I'm sure. That being said, how hard is 'porting' and what exactly does that mean? I think I get the idea but how is it done really?
I would love to learn how to do this. I am slowly getting into theming a little, but am no where close to releasing anything yet, first off I am a perfectionist and second I am just learning the basics now.
Would love to start reading up on the whole porting aspect of stuff.

Porting is basically making the proper changes for the rom/kernel/theme to be compatible with another device. Just do a Google search and you can find other threads talking about it.
If you don't have any code experience it will be tough going to learn. If you are already trying to learn how to theme than this is good place to start because knowing the directory structure and where things are located will help.

no the tech sites need to read between the lines. was there a nexus being shown off around big v's hq? yea.. wanna guess why? because out of the top four carriers in teh us they are the only ones without a nexus device..
there are rumors of verizon getting a droid prime which if thats the case yet again they will be without a nexus device (cant call it something else) my guess is because they want the hardware but their carrier bloat crap on it
The photon is an awsome phone and with tegra 2 thd games it beats my gfs evo shift hands down. I tried the evo3d and wasnt impressed. Its really buggy and likes to get stuck in 3d mode. The sales rep even told me to go with the photon which was cheaper meaning less commissions. She had came from doing repairs to sales and she said the evo3d was a waste of money and told me all the horror stories they were having at the repair center with them.
I know sprint has some phones comimg out soon that are going to be better but work with what we have first.
I found my old htc tilt and it still has more dev than the photon.
Im someone who isnt all about games. I like preformance, battery life and apps to make my day more productive.

I think a lot of Sprint customers were like me... the MoPho came out, we yawned, and had zero interest in it regardless of specs because it was Motorola... and we all knew Motorola was the essence of pure toxic TiVO-ized evil in AT&T/Verizon-land. They encrypted their bootloaders in ways that couldn't be trivially cracked, and bent over backwards to lock down everything they could.
Then Google bought Motorola, the sun came out, the birds started singing, the sourcecode got released, and suddenly the MoPho became interesting.
hey folks sorry if this not in right spot but...... am about to get my upgrade on sprint and am looking at the photon or the evo 3d. was wondering what some of you thought about the differences in these two phones and which seems to be the better of the two. ive read the specs and from what i can tell other than not having a gimicky 3d button the photon is the better phone. could someone who has one of these kinda shed some light on me? thanks

Oh. There is an actual epic 2 coming out soon. Modeled off the Epic 4G.

Yea? where did you see that? Would be nice if its like the Epic Touch but with a keyboard and faster lol
From what I read, but who knows how legit it is. It's gonna be a 1.2 ghz single core, better screen, and qwerty keyboard just like the Epic. I searched Epic 2 on google, and came up with a few things, so you might try that.
In all honesty, whatever you get right now is gonna work great for right now... If you really want something better, hold out for Kal El and Ice Cream Sammich. That's what's gonna be better than what's out now...

It's for my gal, not me. She HAS to have the qwerty keyboard so that's why I was interested in the Epic 2. I'm quite happy with my photon, and will probably be waiting until something better comes out. As I don't think the Prime is gonna be all that great either.

Cant really go asking a for comparisons between the Photon and the EVO 3D in the Photon section. See, generally, the folks that lurk around here love this phone and will glare at you whit fierce hate for even mentioning the EVO. And for good reason.
The Photon is a hell of a phone. Why? Because it is first and foremost exactly that: a phone. It is not a fancy gadget that just happens to make calls and because of the Moto antennae that go into it, you can really tell the difference once you've used them both for a decent amount of time.
Besides, it's Tegra II, so this phone has pull with is nVidia geeks as well.
I owned both the EVO 3D and the Photon as well as the EVO 4G. The 4G was better than the 3D minus speed, and sharpness. The photon blows them all out of the water . The only thing I wished that it has was a larger screen like the EVO 4G, but it is just as awesome as it is. The EVO 3D kept dropping calls. The EVO 4G had a great radio for signal also.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the EVO 4G have a 4,3inch screen?
The Photon has the same screen size with a larger resolution (540 x 960 pixels compared to the evo 4g's 480 x 800 pixels)

Duh.....get your math on Mr .......... 4.3 they may be but the EVO 3d is longer and narrow, where as the EVO 4G is shorter and wider. Basic geometry there bud; out side of resolution; which I did make a reference to. Own both then come again and make a valid point. "Not trying to be a wise ass here either." The Photon is in the middle screen size ind the width department, but functions as a phone way better
I just came from the evo 4g to the photon 4g. All i can say is its great i will also say i live in a fringe area and the photon hangs on to signal like no other phone. Plus dont forget that if sprint drops evdo rev. B the photon will be able to take advantage of that.

Seeing how the new nexus prime has no capacitive buttons, how is this going to run on any phone that has them? Will they just be not usuable? With sprints new anouncement about these 4g phones being put to bed in 2012. I don't know about these type of updates coming. Not trying to rain on anyone's parade but this is just a guess.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a port here shortly. As for offical OTA probably next year like you said.

My guess is that if a device has physical buttons the on screen buttons are not shown. I highly doubt we will see the elimination of physical buttons, especially in low end small screen devices that will continue to be available. Not to mention some people might not be very comfortable with no physical buttons.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Well we don't have "physical" buttons per say on the Photon do we? IE home, search, etc.
Sent from my Photon via XDA
The nexus prime has nothing but onscreen controls. I agree they will have to make the capacitive buttons work because I don't see every phone not having buttons because it will turn some consumers away. I just think the transition to ICS is going to be a lot harder than froyo to gingerbread. This is a complete overhaul of android from what I have seen.
Hey I would love to see it come to the photon but if even a company like HTC who updates their phone pretty often says they are not even giving Sense 3.5 to the Evo 3d consumers than seeing ICS on top tier phones is probably going to take a while.
I will say there is a ray of sunshine because the ATrix did receive gingerbread and motorola could have easily let that phone die out due to low sales. That shows they do care that the consumer is on the newest software.
Well ICS is the new google deal right? For their phone? And google owns motorola now don't they? So one would assume we should get it. I just remember hearing that so we might actually get the ICS faster than I thought.

In corporate mergers it takes a while for integration to occur after the joining of the two companies. This can take anywhere from months to years.

My initial thought was the same. "Google now owns MotoMobile, so the Photon should be the second phone to get ICS" But then I realized 1) they don't own them outright (yet), 2) they've claimed they're gonna let MotoMobile remain their own company (until they wanna build something REALLY cool) and 3) since Blur sucks so bad, it's gonna take a while to get ICS to mesh well.
As for capacitive buttons, I know that on the Flyer port, they were all disabled (except for the scribe launch button), and that's OK with me!
Pew! Pew! Pew! From my Mo-Pho!

Yeah. So I guess a port is probably more likely than an OTA update for the time being for us.
Sent from my Photon via XDA
I've gone through a number of large corporate mergers (as one of the mid-level troops, not saying I'm one of the drivers).
It is VERY common for the 2 companies to start detailed planning and integration in a couple of keys areas where they will get quick competitive differentiation well before the deal is finalized. Subject to legal and regulatory limits of course. And they will have confidentiality and NDA's in place if they need to abort/unwind the detail.
It's quite true that full integration of back office, product portfolios and supply chain can take a couple of years. But this should be fairly short for Moto and Google since they are pretty dissimilar companies and won't have a ton of overlap to deal with.
I have absolutely no doubt that Moto and Google are working very closely now on ICS and Moto HW.
I can't even fathom a guess at when we'd see a OTA update, however depending on the time frame it'll be nice to see where the Photon sits in their eyes. 6 months or more and I think we can consider ourselves the retarded little brother of the Atrix.
Hello guys,
I've been following xda photon forums from the start. I must say that i like what you guys do here and your communication, being helpful and nice to each other. Devs are friendly, owners are like buddies. Honestly, MoPho forums draw a picture in my mind for what it should have been like in all other motorola forums @xda. I own razr xt910 and atrix now. Just decided to trade my atrix for the photon. Atrix is a great device but it doesn't excite me anymore. It's not that i need a photon but cant resist myself of getting one especially after the free msl code guide.
Wish me luck for the trade since i'm looking after a straight trade.
Good luck with that.
I think the fact that the Photon is not as popular as the EVO3D, SGSII, etc. is an advantage when it comes to this forum and the type of peeps participating. I remember how bad some of the other phone forums got after growing with users. Everybody started complaining, fighting, and most the devs, sorry to say, were just plain jerks. In there defense though they were getting stupid questions asked time after time after time from lazy, immature users who didn't want to read first.
The other great thing is that this phone is better stock than most other phones are so not as many peeps having to flash a new rom every hour to get things to work. The roms we do have in this forum are quality and backed by devs willing to provide any support needed.
After being on the EVO 4G forums, and Droid X Forums, boy, I hated the rude people. But after all, we have only had one major fight break out here, and I had to call in the mods to clean some trashy mouths up. But, only one. guess most of those "rude people" must be some kids who got too excited on a new phone. Photon is for men, lol... I found popular forums (xda, ppcgeecks, androidforums...) are always helpful.

If you look at my signature, SPB 3D Shell is giving me a headache at the moment, but I love my phone. Get Otterbox Defender over GhostArmor to protect that baby!
Coming from the EVO 4G since it's launch, I've definitely seen my share of arguments and rudeness on both XDA and the Androidforums website.
The community for the Photon seems smaller but not less served. We already have a nearly stable CM7, a Miui port, and our CM9 is well on the way to being on par with the EVO 4G's.
The only thing we're missing is some themed roms, but it is of little consequence, specially if you use CM7 and utilize the theme manager.
I've come from the Samsung Galaxy S, it was good and lots of development but the crappy GPS annoyed me, couldn't get a fix unless you're under a clear sky.
Loving the Photon, gives me a fix down to 6m indoors on a rainy day in just a few seconds! Also the notification LED is really nice.
Its funny how no one had this phone but when a little development comes around all these new people pop up randomly lol. Good luck with your trade, and if its successful hope you enjoy the best device on sprint's network!

If you look at my signature, SPB 3D Shell is giving me a headache at the moment, but I love my phone. Get Otterbox Defender over GhostArmor to protect that baby!

You will never fully enjoy your phone until you ditch that launcher bro lol. I understand that many paid 15 bucks for it so you guys are clinging to it but its bad, Michael Jackson bad (aka it sucks).

I bought the Photon on launch day. But I came here hoping to find development works. I don't have those skills (or that time) but I am grateful to those of you who do.
Meanwhile, I like the phone, and I like the community. I assumed there were similar communities around most of the phones, though.
It's a very good phone. Just watch out for the texting issues.
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII EPIC 4g Touch on XDA Premium!
Glad to see one of the best phones I've had or seen is getting more love! It really is a winner, though. Great battery, great hardware, good screen, and a wonderful community; what mote could u ask for in a phone?

Hello guys,
Will finish the trade on monday. For starters i know a lot about the photon, there is no texting issue or whatsoever. It is one of rare stable stable out of the box android phones in history.

The update is...there is no update.
Last I checked, there isn't actually anything new here, the page has said CDMA is To Be Announced and GSM is Q2 for ages.
Honestly, I suspect CDMA ICS is going to deployed at more or less the same time, and has been presented this way to stop people blaming Verizon directly for any potential delays. Most of the other regions have the RAZR offered through multiple carriers, meaning it's less a specific carrier's 'fault'.
Why do we need official ICS when we have great working ICS builds already? Its not as though it's going to unlock the bootloaders.

An official ICS kernel with working hardware acceleration would be nice, for one. As would less brutally short battery life.

ummm? Our bootloader is locked because of sh*tty moto, so what we really need is an updated kernel that doesn't suck so much, including updated drivers, hardware acceleration, and a ROM that doesn't have major bugs like the front facing camera actually working.
If ICS doesn't come out by the 1st of May then I'm dropping this phone for something else. I can see now why so many people hate Motorola. The going price on eBay is pretty high for the maxx, so it'll be worth it from my point of view considering I got the 2 year discounted price of $250 an they're currently selling at $500+

It's not about bootloaders, and I'm pretty tired of hearing about bootloaders, honestly.
Nothing works better than an OTA from a manufacturer. NOTHING. You can port all you want, but nothing will work 100% unless the manufacturers release an official OTA. Believe me, I know. As a recovering Flashaholic. My RAZR is stock, outta the box, but the PROMISE that was made by Motorola was that we would be the first to receive the ICS update, and obviously that's been broken...

Okay well coming from the Droid Incredible, where the bootloader wasn't locked down and developers could easily update kernels and radio's, I highly disagree. Stock ROM was laggy and the kernel from the OTA was poorly updated with old drivers. With it unlocked, developers were able to constantly add the latest and fastest drivers, latest linux codes, optimizing performance and battery life, and adding a few amazing features such as call recording and various governors.
So what I'm getting at is the bootloader being locked IS a big deal for performance, battery life and features for your phone.
But ya I'm not expecting the bootloader to be unlocked with ICS (is anyone expecting that?) but the update will mean that moto will be updating their kernel and add things to the phone that developers otherwise can't do because of the bootloader being locked, and that's that part that gets everyone annoyed, and of course it gets even worse then they push back that update without even an estimate on when it will be done.

Problem solved, get rid of your phone! ICS is working great with what we have available. Yes, an official would be even better, and that will come. Quit crying about it because you crying on the forum makes no difference to any so called promise that Verizon and Motorola didn't make directly to you.

Why do people on the internet always go to age for a put down? Quit *****ing. You are a clown to think your rant is going to make any difference. The only reason you ranted on the internet was to male yourself feel better that you bought a phone that is locked down by a company with that exact history.

It's an OS, folks, not the cure for cancer. When we get it, we get it... The .173 update is working pretty nicely for now. If it ain't good enough, root & ROM your phone or EBay it and get a GNex.

You truly are a moron. Get over yourself. Maybe do something with your life like I have and somebody might actually care about what you say. Otherwise you might as well shut the hell up because you have no clue.

The update will come also for the CDMA phones and for you people I sure hope in Q2. But even knowing the fact that I am owning a GSM phone I would rater wait a few months and have an os that is perfect and mostly bugfree. Seems more important to me than that they rush it and give us an os with bugs they could have taken out just by waiting a few weeks/months.
Just a thought.
its painful as hell, but i lol'd.
Thought I might share this.
" Thank you for your interest in Motorola products. I am responding to the complaint that you filed with Better Business Bureau regarding the Motorola RAZR and Ice Cream Sandwich.
We are planning to upgrade DROID RAZR to ICS during the first half of 2012, and will provide more precise guidance within 6 weeks post public push of Ice Cream Sandwich by Google. We are all looking forward to ICs upgrade but to date the upgrade is in evaluation and planning phase.
Thank You, Dorothy Hodges Corporate Consumer Advocacy Office"

As long as we get ics that's all that matters. I'm in the US so of course I'm irritated that ics is still in development and planning stages but as I always say the good things are worth the wait.
