Over the last few days I have completely lost all of my contacts twice. I would really appreciate some advise or a point in the right direction to solving my frustration.
I am running the official HTC ROM version 2.73 and everything was running fine up until two days ago. I originally had all of my contacts stored under 'Phone' as I had a fresh sim card and the rest of my contacts were spread over several accounts (gmail, hotmail, exchange server) and none of my phone numbers were stored electronically.
The first time there was some error message that I did not pay attention to (as they do tend to pop up every now and again) followed by a phone reset and loss of all my contacts and some associated data (call logs but not email or SMS). After attempting and failing to find these numbers I decided to re-enter my contacts but this time save them under 'Google' contacts so they would be backed up to my gmail.
I had just finished re-entering all of my contacts and then all but 30-odd were gone again. This happened following a forced close and reset of the sense UI (as has been happening with increased frequency of late). All of my favourites had also been deleted - leaving me very frustrated! The lost contacts are also not saved in my gmail and many that remain have been duplicated four or five times.
If anyone could advise me on my problem I would be very appreciative
Thanks
David
Do you utilize HTC Sync ?
As I understand, contacts stored in the "Google" Group are automatically synced with contacts in you Google Account ; contacts stored in the "Phone" Group are synced by HTC Sync with contacts in Outlook or Outlook Express on your PC running HTC Sync.
I had installed HTC sync but was yet to untalise it as I did not realise that 'Phone' contacts had anything to do with it. I do not have any contacts stored on my home laptop and therefore whenever a sync was done, zero contacts were synced.
I have changed the setting of my sync from MS Outlook to Windows address book and all of my contacts seem to have reapeared - both phone and google contacts. All of my phone contacts seem to have lost the link with Facebook but I think that may be a recuring problem with Hero users.
Thanks for the suggestion - hopefully now I can sort all of my contacts out!
Weird???
I have never had a problem with Sense UI having to 'force close'
That's very unfortunate, especially as it happened just as you'd input all your contacts again.
I never use HTC Sync personally but if you have all your contact's details - try inputting them into your Google account using a pc. This way they should just sync with your phone automatically, and it's much easier than entering them on your phone!
If the 'force close' issue keeps happening - I would send it back and get a repair done, or a replacement!
Hope this helps,
Dan
I currently have a stock Telstra ROM and will remain as a stock ROM until Telstra release the firmware so I have a warranty copy
I am having issues with the Exchange contacts and Sync - it is set to sync contacts, email, calendar, etc., and when you initially set up the account, all the contacts sync, but if I delete a contact on my phone, it remains in Outlook and if I create a new one in Outlook, it doesn't appear on my phone. The Calendar and email seem to work just fine.
This is becoming a major problem, as I have to create the contact twice, and if I forget the create it on my phone, I have no information for the client I want to call.
Can anyone offer a solution to this - is there a setting I have missed. Is it a bug?
thanks
DT
Outllok only syncs contacts with basic information like names and phone numbers. Any extra like pictures and notes will not resync beccuase it does not recognize these fields.

I do have some contacts with contact images - which do sync the first time you set up the account. However, I created a test contact on the phone - nothing extra and it doesn't sync and I also then created a contact in Outlook with no extras, and it doesn't sync either. This must be a bug, but it is one I have to find a solution for fast, as it effects my business.
thanks

I take it that Contacts were included in the setup of adding the Exchange email account.
Can you view the email account via a web browser? If you can, then you can find out if the problem is with the phone or the Outlook on the computer.

Yes it was.
There is no problem with the web outlook, outlook our the exchange server, it is the phone.

I know that it is tedious, but what happens when you remove the account from your phone. Switch it off and on, then add the account again?

Thanks for your reply.
It does the initial sync of all contacts, but then no more sync of changes.

Go into Contacts, select Option button, Mor-> Settings -> Save new contacts to. You get the option to save to the Phone, Google (your gmail account) and Microsoft Exchange (your work exchange email account). Select the Exchange option.
When you go into Contacts, select Option buttonthen select Sync contacts. Alternatively you could just go to the email app and do a refresh, then the (Exchange email) contacts should sync.

Already have tried that - it is set to save to Exchange and doing the sync there or in "account and sync" doesn't change anything. I even contacted Samsung and all they suggested was buying Touchdown from the app store - great product Samsung has if they can't even support their own software.

Same issue here. Works fine for a few days then bam! stops syncing. the only way to get it updated is to blow out the contacts on the phone and re-do the initial sync. Which sucks if you have added contacts on the phone.
Evidently this is not an isolated issue. Based on reports from others in other forums, many of which are from IT professionals, this is a recurring issue with no discernible rhyme or reason.
I have a hotmail account. I put on my phone as an exchange account.
I added a contact via the browswer on my PC. Synced my phone and the contact appeared. Deleted it on the phone, synced the account. Checked on the PC and the contact had gone.
I repeated this with a few contacts. some started on the phone and some on the PC. I also took some contacts and modified their details. and synced. There were later modified again with different details on the PC. Every test showed that there was not a problem.
I am using the stock KF3 ROM and the test was run in the standard e-mail app. I have Enhanced Email (just so that I can sync more than 1 month).

Nope - Samsung said that there is limited support for Activesync and to use touchdown (at $20 from the market). I am using the trial of it at the moment, and even though it does sync the contacts within the touchdown app, it doesn't sync between the app and the stock contacts, which your phone uses for dialing, text, etc.
It is a major bug, and one they don't seem to want anything to do with.

I once again contacted Samsung Support indicating that the contacts sync is a bug and what solutions are likely on the horizon. This is the response...
Thank you for contacting Samsung Customer Care.
Android is an open source operating system owned by Google. If this is
not functioning, it is configuration of the exchange itself that will be
creating issues.
Please find a link below to the Touchdown features.

They can't even admit they have a problem - it is all Googles fault!!

I asked this originally over on Android forums, but Im not getting a response there, so thought I would try here instead.
Will try and explain the situation as best as I can.
The kit
T-Mobile Pulse Mini (Froyo)
HP Laptop (Win 7)
Easy Tab (Froyo)
The Problem
My kids have been using their phones as their primary device for nearly a year. Contacts stored in it have always synced with Gmail and appear fine on the Laptop so the account is syncing ok.
For xmas they both received Easy Tab's, a cheap Froyo tablet. It looks the biz and performs well. However, we cant get the contacts or calendar to sync.
Gmail mail syncs fine. The tablets have complete access to the internet via Wifi.
We had a market issue when the tablets were first used, but this was resolved by a Force Stop and Clear Data of Google Services Framework, and were advised to do the same to resolve the contacts/Calendar issue, but this hasnt worked.
When going into the contacts settings on the tab Gmail doesnt appear in accounts, only their Twitter accounts, and I cant figure out how to get Gmail to show up in there.
If I go to Accounts & Sync the Gmail account appears there along with the Twitter account, however on going into the Gmail account sync settings the only option in there is Sync Gmail, where as on the phone there are options to sync calendar and contacts.
I really need some help with this to make these tablets complete for the kids as they are great devices, but simple things like sending an email arent as easy as they should be because the contacts list isnt there with the email addresses.
Cheers in advance.
I am caught between Exchange and the Android ecosystem. Work uses Exchange and Iphones, I sneak in Android stuff where I can (Desire HD, Nexus 7 and other stuff). All my private life is in google calendar. All my work is in Exchange calendars, which is shared and coordinated with lots of ppl.
Is it possible to make an app (if it doesn't exist) that SYNCS DIRECTLY between Exchange and Google?
What I have found so far:
- If you can install software on the PC where you have Outlook installed, you can use Google Sync. I can't do that
- I could possibly install Outlook on another PC and install google sync, and then have that PC running just for that. But comeon?
- If I use Exchange on the devices, I can see combined calendars, but it is basically just pooling two sources and not sync
- I can add online calendars to Outlook from google, but these can't be seen by others? Or what? Not AFAIK.
- I have tried a few apps for the phone, but none does the job.
- I could accept running two calendars all the time, but that is SO messy. Been trying that for a year now and it stinks.
I really hate this situation. Any ideas? I hope I found the right section.
What I basically need is Google sync for android, instead of merely PC.
I think the solution is in #2. If you don't do it yourself, there might be an online service which would do it, and probably for a fee.
I'm not aware of any application which would solve your problem.
I've ended up keeping all my personal stuff in Google and all my work stuff in Exchange. I have none of my personal stuff on my work PC.
On my phone I use email with my Exchange account and Gmail with my Google account.
I sync calendar, email, and contacts for both account. Calendar shows both accounts and People shows all my contacts.
I have no duplicates (no work contacts in Google or personal contacts in Exchange).
This way I have a unified calendar and contacts yet clean separation of work and personal.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. It seems there is no solution.

Bill,
As I write initially, that is what I already do.
I am not happy with this setup. I work long hours and travel a lot - and my colleauges benefit from seeing my private bookings, when trying to book all day events, meetings that require lots of travel, evening meetings etc. Everyone here has everything in Exchange and I am the only one who doesn't offer this solution. Well I guess the answer is "meh"

It sounds as though you would be better off only using Exchange for appointments and forget about Google Calendar.

This one is difficult for me.. And I have no idea how to solve it
I left the company where I've worked for 7 years. I have all my personal contacts synced to my former company's Exchange account. That account has since been locked, but my Galaxy SIII still retains all the contacts.
How do I move these Exchange account contacts to a specific contact list in Gmail (or another account)? When I try to do a backup of the phone, I can't find any backup program that lets me backup just my Exchange contacts.. instead. it tries to backup the 3,000 gmail "other" contacts as well, which is just a huge mess and what I don't want to retain or backup. I just want the Exchange contacts backed up.
BTW.. i also have the contacts synced on my ipad, so if u know of an IOS way to do this, I can do it on there.
Anyone?
