Hey, have I just noticed this last night. If you use the top of the magic pen on the screen, it works just like your finger does. More specifically, it works like a capacitive stylus would! This wasn't advertised as a feature, was it? If not, I'm glad I figured it out. It makes it so I only have to use my fingers sporadically.

It's an old trick to use the negative side of a battery on a capacitive screen for a makeshift stylus. Since the negative side of the battery is cap side, it takes advantage of said trick.

Actually it has nothing to do with a battery..
It's just a metal conductor touching your fingers with a large contact area, you could use a frozen sausage!
Use the back of a teaspoon on the screen and it works just as well!
Take care though, the metal can easily scratch the screen.
Best thing to do is attach a small piece of conductive foam (the soft black kind that delicate IC's are sold in) to the top of the pen.

I will somewhat disagree.
While the pen may act as a conductor, holding the pen with a pair of insulated pliers and using it upside down also works. Thus, it is the battery as well
Sometimes I shouldn't be allowed to play with stuff when I get bored.
Regardless, it is a neat unintended feature

Agreed, it will work this way due to negative charge on capacitive coupling but we always look at MISS (Make it simple, stupid!)
If i can explain to readers, a better use of their pen with a nice bit of conductive foam on the top (EVEN if the battery is missing or completely flat) then that is the best option in my opinion, no need for confrontation.
Oh, BTW, your choice of pliers will have an effect on your experiment! If they have any metal content, the capacitive coupling pick-up from your hand is increased, just try it with non-conductive plastic tweezers/forceps and it won't work... We ain't talkin miiliamps here, were talkin nanoamps...

List if things that worked
1 frozen sausage
2 popcicle
3 Starbucks straw with frapp in it
4 back of pen with battery taken out

Ps this all works on my EVO 3d as well

Neat that those things work and all, but how cumbersome is it to use
some hulking monstrosity as a makeshift stylus that is intended to be used for delicate/precise touches such as drawing? Wrap a leaf blower in foil and connect that to 300 feet of copper wire which is spun around your body and leave a length of wire as long as your finger coming off the top of your hand and you don't even have to hold it!

Yep this is a little old-- New news is that when Honeycomb drops it's supposed to have support for the pen tip to be used as the stylus.

Anyone have any tips for removing the battery cover? I keep my nails short and can't jam one in there so I have a hard time removing it. I've also tried putting a penny in the slot and prying it open that way.
I use both of my thumbs. One to initially start prying and the other one to go along and work it free.
A dime does the trick too.

The battery cover is one thing I hate about the TB. Why not make it an easy slide-off like the Nexus. The N1 had great build quality and the battery cover was not a PITA to remove.

Yep I always hated the battery cover. One thing I liked about my Blackberry. Very nice battery door
What works for me is to take an use one finger to pry open the slot at the top and take the other hand an take my thumb and press down into the center of the cover where it says htc, that seems to make the cover spread open alittle for me anyway.
Careful removing cover, I got a little overzealous and cracked my stock cover on the first day! That sucks!!!
But in the end, I still don't see a need to remove the cover unless you are battery swapping all the time, but you should use the extended battery for that...
I got tired of it being insanely hard to remove, so i slightly filed down each of the tabs on the cover, it comes off twice as easy now. Be careful not to shave off too much if you do this or it wont stay on.
I did a little bit at a time, and tried it out after each to make sure it still grabbed enough.
That cover is a pain and I always feel like I am going to break it when trying to remove it. The two thumbs method has worked for me so far.
Here's a solutiuon and you won't damage the plastic
Use one of those little plastic grocery store cards that most of us have on our key rings. Some of them are even tapered along the edges, those work better.
Pinky
Grow your pinky nail out like a gangster but keep the others manicured...
I'm sorry but I just have to bump this. I'm ruining the finish on my TB because this cover is so insanely hard to remove that I have to pry the damn thing off with a screwdriver or key. In fact, I cant actually just wedge it in there, because the necessary force would send the phone flying against the wall. Instead I have to jam it in there, then twist it a full 180 degrees completley bending the case and scratching the lip all to hell before it finally pops up.
There simply has to be a better way! Anything that requires torque is GOING to cause scratches!
Wow, talk about man handling! Its hard, but not that hard.

Not sure if my devices is refurbished or defunct, but when i press firmly on the sides of the INC 4g, I get a similar ripple effect like when you press on your LCD monitor too hard.
I came from the Inc 2 and the build quality on that device, i would have to say is a little bit better than the 4g. Anyone else experiencing this or is my device just faulty?

I have this same problem. After removing my back to insert my microSD card and reattaching the back, the case no longer closes completely, with casing immediately on the bottom of the volume rocker not latching on properly. In attempting to make it, I pressed firmly on the edge and it made my screen ripple slightly for a moment.
My EVO4G would ripple when I squeezed the sides. It was one of those thing you found out about through other people complaining. Yet after a while I never even noticed that anymore. I don't think I ever needed to squeeze a phone that hard either.
Just remember. Cell phones are like cars. They used to build them well with no features, now they build them cheap with the works.
Speaking of build quality....my phone is barely 3 days old...dropped it a short distance..way shorter than more of the hundred plus times I dropped my inc 2...and the damn screen shattered.....wtf..
Sent from my ADR6410LVW using xda app-developers app
It's not necessarily how far you drop it (although there is a point at which height just overcomes everything, call it terminal velocity hehe) but it's where it hits. Tempered glass is extremely strong, but it's also tempered. An extremely light tap from just the right direction will cause it to shatter.
A perfect example of this was a gas station I worked at back in college. The glass they have that protects the cashier from an explosion is about 3 inch thick tempered glass. It would withstand an explosion of huge magnitude. I watched them replace that pane of glass one day, when they removed it, they loaded it into the back of a truck and gave it a slight rap on the corner with a hammer and it shattered in the bed of the truck. They did this intentionally by the way

Take some black electrical tape, cut a strips about 1 inch long and about 2-4 mm wide. You will want to put them under the lip of the back case, adhesive side in, on the middle left, upper right(above the antenna not on them), top and bottom. if you cut them thin enough the case will snap back on and never creak,
I had todo this on my rezound too, they made these backs really flimsy to the point where they eventually won't snap back together.

If you are talking about the glue underneath the bezel of the glass you might wanna try heating it up with a hairdryer or something and then just pressing and holding it down for a while. Best way is on a flat surface and use a towel or your shirt or something to press down with.
I had this issue with the "frame" of my phone coming free on one side. I bit the bullet and just used normal super glue, applied a couple of small dots from behind and then "clamped" by simply tying some string around the phone.
Make sure you have something to wipe up any excess, you don't want any on you screen!
So far it appears to be working for me.

So I bought a case from eBay that came from Hong Kong. It arrived to today. Its a flip case that closes with a magnet but I did not know that before I bought it. Is the magnet bad for the screen or S Pen?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
It seems if the magnet is strong it could cause issues. Although the Seidio case has a magnet on the back that does not affect the screen. I think it depends on location and strength of the magnet.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk 2
The magnet is on the right side in the middle of the case (when its flipped closed) on top of the screen. I'll take a pic of it n put it here later when I get home. How do I know if its too strong? I really like the case but I don't want the magnet to mess up the screen, S Pen or anything else in the phone
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
the strength of magnets doesn't affect the screens as much as the length of exposure. Magnets will cause a sort of dead spot for the s pen though. When you see a demo, go to a paint program and try to shade the whole screen in and you will see a circle the size of the offending magnet that won't allow itself to be colored in.
I contacted wacom, who I believe make the s pen tech and they said though magnets will cause things to not work, it won't cause any long term damage

The s-pen uses magnetism as a source of power. Introducing a magnet to the field simply disrupts the field and keeps the phone and the s-pen from resonating. Introducing a magnet will not harm the accuracy of the device. Removal of the magnet should immediately cease any inaccuracies with the s-pen. Long story short, use with confidence sir!

Common issue on the Galaxy Note 10.1 (which is the supersized version of Note II) forum with cases with magnet affecting the Wacom pen.
I had to return my case for this very reason. There was a large round dead spot where the magnet was, moved the magnet away and the spot was fine. In addition, the note 2 manual states to not use cases with magnets, so back mine went.

My cast that I got from Best Buy, the one that is identical to the Surface case, affects the S pen. That small magnet affects the drawing area even though its small and on the back side. Hopefully when my Active case gets here it wont have the same issue since there is the silicon case in between.

The plastic tips feel much better on a tempered glass screen protector than the rubber ones.
Actually the pen is powered by an electrical field generated by the phone. The electrical field is also used to determine pen position. Pen contact is determined by the pressure placed on the point of the pen. To prove this, take out the pen and open action note. Hover above the screen and then press the tip with your finger instead of the screen. You will still place marks on the screen. This shows that the screen does not interact with the pen in any way.

wow thanks i didn't know my extras were of rubber AND plastic. my default one was rubber and it didn't glide as well as i wanted it to (at least on my ebay tempered glass protector). i changed it out for a plastic one and now it's perfect (if anything, too slippery). now i have 1 extra plastic, and 4 rubbers.
OP, try to double check your extras... the plastic tips are even shinier than the rubbers, so you can visually see the difference with a good eye.
I had no idea that it came with plastic tips. I popped one in and the pen is much more enjoyable to use now. Plus there's no more sticky streak marks on my screen from the rubber tip wearing away.
In glad I saw this thread.
just checked my spare tips. 2 plastic and 3 rubber + 1 rubber(original)....seems a bit much on the rubber ones lol..but im guessing they do wear out faster
the plastic ones feel alot...nicer on the screen than the rubber ones lol
Does anyone know where to buy replacement plastic tips? I checked the box and can't find my replacement ones. I've searched and the only option I found was buying a brand new S Pen + the tips for around ~$20. My current rubber tip is almost completely worn out.
