[Q] ClockworkMod Issue - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

CWM won't work on my AT&T SGSII. It installs ok, but when I boot into it, anything I choose just goes to CWM hat logo and stays there until I hit any key. Then it goes right back to menu and I have to pull the battery to reboot into android. The device is rooted and I have no issues other than being unable to flash or nandroid or anything through CWM. It's driving me nuts!. I've tried going back to stock and several kernels and same issue persists. Anyone have any tips on how to address this?

You could try updating cwm in Rom manager from the market place

Using home button to select? If you're using power button it will cause menu to disappear.

[Q] How do i boot into recovery?

I've been wondering and searching how to boot into recovery on the thunderbolt? Not from rom manager but when the phone is off. When i had my original moto droid all i had to do was turn it off then turn it on while holding x and i was in recovery how do i do that on the thunderbolt?
And if someone would be so kind as to explain what hboot is thanx!!
hboot is htc's bootloader, mainly used for flashing radio's and flashing stock ruu's. From what i know if u boot in to hboot, power + volume down button, then click recovery, it will boot into the recovery.

Let's see if I get this right:
hboot is the default bootloader. Press at the same time, and hold, power and volume down to get into the bootloader.
From within the bootloader you can choose to enter recovery.

Is there are way to boot into the default recovery (is there are default recovery?)
Every time I attempt this, it defaults to hboot, looks for a radio zip, tells me there isn't one(because there's not one on the sdcard), and only gives me the option to reboot by pressing power. I briefly see the initial menu, with the options for recovery and such under hboot, but I cannot select them with the volume up or down buttons?

My mistake, there is. If that radio zip file is there, you cannot move up and down through the menu then? I got a botched ROM here, hangs on the boot animation, no ADB, and no way to read that sdcard outside the phone.
Edit - If I remove the sdcard, I can do a wipe cache&data factory reset, I think? But my ROM files are on the sdcard.
Can you still use cwr without a battery if its plugged in? I know I could on the OG Droid, so if this still works, you can just take the SD card out, go to hboot and select recovery, then put the SD card back in

I just attempted this, without the battery, I cannot even get a pulse from the TB. With the battery in and no sdcard, I can get into CWR from hboot. Second I remove the battery from the phone, it powers off. Doing this with it plugged into the wall AC too.
Edit - This is where I'm at right now. If I remove the sdcard, wipe cash&data, I can boot into a mostly broken ROM. Specifically, the keyboard FCs immediately, I can skip past the HTC setup screens, the virtual keyboard will generate another FC. At the end of the setup screens, it'll go to a blank background with no icons and the status bar on top, showing 3G signal strength, time, etc. There's nothing on the screen but that. If I push and hold power, it brings up the Power menu, to shutdown, restart, etc. Any option thoroughly locks the phone and requires a battery pull. After that, it'll get stuck in a boot loop at the boot animation until I get into CWR again and wipe cache/data. And I've left it go for a good 20 minutes, more than enough time to rebuild the dalvik.
I should add that this was slightly, as in totally, self inflicted. :/ I was switching ROMs, rolled back from the GB leak radio to the froyo radio, and was wiping cash&data to move to a froyo ROM; got interrupted by another task, and forget where I was at. Basically, I wiped cache&data without flashing a ROM afterward.
Edit - Had to wait until I got home from work. Install the card in a sled, delete the zip, everything's good now.
Im just stuck at the Thunderbolt wallpaper. I tried removing the sd card, battery and all that crap but still stuck. Any way I can work around this?

Boot into hboot and then into recovery to flash a backup you hopefully made and if not just re-flash your ROM. Happened to me once when I rushed through a new ROM flash and didnt verify the MD5. If you dont have a ROM or a backup saved on your card then you can try to do what the guy above you did and put your card into a reader and put one on there that way.
Power and volume down

its S-ON, yes i can access recovery, the only thing i did was try to change the font using Font Installer then it rebooted after that it would go on HTC quietly brilliant logo then blacked off, i hold the power button but it did the same thing over n over again for an hour. So i thought if i factory reset it it would fix the problem but i think i made it worse cause now its just stuck on HTC quietly brilliant logo, I left it there for couple of hours and went out hoping when i get back a miracle would happen and it'll be fix but when i got home its still stuck on that logo. I still can access recovery though. This is my very first rooted phone and i have no idea what to do next.

What recovery are you using, TWRP? Had you flashed a ROM prior to tinkering with fonts? Did you make a full backup of your stock ROM after HTC unlocking to load your recovery? I am going to make some assumptions to my questions. If you are using TWRP you can mount the sdcard from recovery and copy on another ROM (pick one to use ... MeanROM?). Even if you can't mount the sdcard from recovery you can still get a ROM on to your phone by pulling sdcard2 from the external sdcard slot and manually mounting/copying to/from your CPU.
If you made a backup of your stock rom after loading your recovery then the first thing to try is wiping everything (factory, caches, etc...) and restore the backup. (Sounds like you may have tried that already).
If that does not work then download a different ROM and try it ... MeanROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1727167) uses it's own splash at start so that may help (because it sounds like you are stuck at the HTC splash).

When you get in recovery wipe cache, dalvik cache, factory reset, system. Then reflash the rom, you will be fine.
Sent from my lair.
It seems to be that some people are having problems with flashing other fonts (source). ALWAYS do a nandroid backup before doing any of these types of modifications to your phone in the future, it's the fastest way to fix broken things. Also make sure that the fonts you are trying to install have been working with our phones and the newest versions of Android and/or Sense.
Here are some things you can do that might fix your bootloop. In descending order try these:
If you have a current Nandroid backup, restore it. It will get your phone working 100% with the least amount of data loss and won't require you to set it all up again.
Re-flash the same ROM you have (if it's stock, it can also be found in the Android Dev section of the forum). This will likely fix the problem. Especially if it's a font issue.
Hope it doesn't come to this but run the RUU that matches your system. This will completely set your phone back to day 1. You'll have to reroot, etc.
Best of luck. And remember to do nandroids often! :good:
THANK YOU GUYS!!!! i was about to give up
i did what you guys told me to do, download a different rom install it on my sdcard and flash it in recovery. AGAIN thank you guys so much, ya'll just made my day. MUCH APPRECIATED!!!
Anytime you can access recovery you are fine

Power Button Dead

Hi Guys,
Last night for some reason my GT-19100T running CM9.1.0 wouldn't lock by pressing the power button, the button itself seems to be working. I can press the button down but nothing happens. I left it for the night and came into work this morning, I thought it might be a bug with the rom, i managed to boot into recovery via the "Rom Manager" app and was going to flash to CM10. My problem is now that i am in recovery, I can't select anything as the power button is not working. I can scroll through the recovery menu with the volume buttons but cant select anything, and now soon as the phone turns on after removing the battery, it goes straight to recovery mode and i cant get around it.
I have tried leaving the battery out for about 3 hours and same thing. I can boot into download mode, But at the moment that doesn't help me.
Any suggestions on what i can do? I'm not worried about warranty so i may pull the phone apart and clean it tonight. Thanks in advance.
Update:
After much playing around with the button i can get it work, it is very temperamental and requires to be pushed in the right way. Was able to flash with Touch recovery and am now updating to CM10 nightlies. Thanks all for your help on my first post.

Hi!
First, have you tried flashing a stock firmware? If that does not help, you can try cleaning your hardware.. it may be dusty or something.. be careful! I hope you get this sorted out.
Also, i hope my suggestion will help you out, cheers!!

Okay, Flashed back to stock ICS rom, Got a little bit further but still no go. It gets the "S" loading screen and stays there, Still cant do factory reset via Android Recovery as it also needs the power button to select. Someone suggested installing CWM touch recovery but i cant find a .tar version of "recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-galaxys2" downloaded from CWM website. Any suggestions on how i can install this without using recovery? Thanks.

I guess you have to flash them with odin..
1. Flash a stock firmware to get you out of bootloop
2. Flash the latest siyah kernel cause it's a touch recovery via odin as well
Do you want me to post the links or will you find it yourself?
I hope this helps, cheers!

I know you will be loosing everything, well unless you have a backup. I would suggest NVflash back to stock with CWM recovery. Then reload the ROM of choice to see or even just boot it into TapUI so see if the problem is Hardware related or UI related. It is tough to say.
i think its hardware, i gave it a nice hard wack and it seems ok...
the thing is i started to save/backup and go back to tap tap. thinking ill use my warrantee,
now it is stuck in a boot mode, turns on, starts to run but only getting to the tap embelm. it does this over and over maybe 6 second intervals..
any ideas??
i cannot get to cwm, and reload gtab or do anything. am i screwed??

Try NVflashing with the stock 1.1 BL with recovery ver.8 preinstalled, after done power device off by holding down power button. The just boot straight to recovery and do a data wipe factory reset then reboot system. The reason for the boot loop is there is still something on the name that the tnt software doesn't like. After you get it booted up then advice just NVflash 1.1 stock with stock recovery and it should boot right up afterwards. The reason for the 2nd nvflash is to remove any tracef the customs recovery.

Sounds like that you are using the NVflash with Stock recovery. When you hold down volume + and press the power button it is booting into stock recovery hence the triangle symbol. You need to get a fresh NVflash setup that includes CWM recovery and use it.

[Q] Installed hyperdrive 16.1, no wifi, can't boot into safestrap

Greetings all. After tons of reading I felt I was ready for a custom ROM (there are so many suggestions on how to custom ROM, but I "thought" I figured it out). I have a Galaxy S4, had kitkat 4.4.2, nc5. I downloaded hyperdrive KK RLS16.1. After rooting with towelroot, installing appropriate programs to allow me to install safestrap, I also downloaded the hyperdrive and the module fix for the wifi fix to the sd. I booted into recovery mode, did a full backup to my sd, did a full wipe, installed the rom, then rebooted. The phone booted to the G5 screen where I would turn on the wifi, only it wouldn't work because I didn't install the wifi module yet. I just continued without wifi and everything seems to work fine. Realizing I maybe was supposed to install the modules after the rom, but before rebooting, I tried booting into recovery, but it will either boot into the screen where it comes up with the android icon, and below it saying "downloading, do not turn off target", or I can boot back into the normal phone without wifi. I tried holding vol up, vol dwn, menu button, etc, while powering up, but I can't get there. Is there a way to get into the normal recovery mode? Since I can use 4G, should I reinstall safestrap, or any suggestions? I searched for threads to this problem but to no avail. Thanks for your help!

Thank you! Yes, I installed recovery after I installed safestrap. I also tried to uninstall recovery, then reboot, then install recovery again. Still same problem. I put on my glasses and when I reboot into recovery, the tiniest text at the top says odin mode, so I assume its looking for a connection to a computer to upload something? I was wondering if I uninstall rcovery and safestrap, could I install TWRP 2.7? I read something about 2 deffernt signatures and don't want to make this worse than it is. The phone actually is working OK except for the wifi, but it seems to me I need to be in recovery to load the modules to fix that??
Hello,
I would say to odin back to nc5 and start all over. This would fix any issue you have, assuming that you are doing everything correctly.
One thing you forgot to do: flash supersu after installing the rom.
I'm sure you can get into normal recovery. Hold down vol-up, power, and home buttons at the same time. When it boots and after a couple of seconds, you'll see blue text appear in the upper left-hand corner. When you see that, release only the power button and continue holding the other buttons.

Again, thanks for trying to help me. I forgot to mention I did flash supersu. If I try to get into recovery, I do not get the blue lines. It just goes to the downloading screen and sits there. Either that or I can go into the normal boot. I heard not to uae odin as that is unreliable. I have a mac and there is another program that is recommended. I was wondering if I can try twrp on top of safestrap, or would that brick me?

I'm glad you answered that for me! I know I would have bricked it just taking stabs at it. I'll do some reading about bring it back with heimdall, and start over. I'll let you know how I did. Thank you!!
