* (a) install the correct driver... er, nevermind, we don't need no stinkin' drivers
* (b) turn on USB debugging (on your phone under Settings -> Applications)
* (c) plug in your phone and set your USB mode to 'PC Mode' (on Linux)

And it just hangs there.
YES, I followed all of the prerequisites.

try switching your usb modes to something else and then back to charge mode a few times

Okay im not trying to say u r stupid(seriously )
Im just looking for easiest fix possible. are u SURE u put the phone to charge only.mode? Default when u plug it in is usb mass storage mode. I have seen many others overlooked that step which causes it to fail
Also did u try a different usb port ? I am not to keen on mac so bear with me. Just trying for the easy fix first

Follow instructions in ChainFire's post to root the SGS2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399. I bought my phone last night and rooted it immediately.
ok, i will now try the other guide, but I have one problem:
I have procceeded these stages:
- Download the attached ODIN file and extract the .zip file
- Download the attached XWKDD, but do NOT extract the .tar file
- Download and extract SuperOneClick (Some say you should not be using the very latest version 1.9, but 1.5 or so)
- If you do not have Samsung's KIES 2.0 installed, download and install it. You need it to install the correct USB drivers, so the programs can communicate with the device. Reboot your computer after installation of KIES.
- Make sure your device is in USB debugging mode: Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging
- Reboot your device into download mode: Turn the device off, then power it on again by pressing and holding VolumeDown + Home + Power simultaneously. You will know when you are in download mode, it is really obvious
- Start ODIN
- Connect the device to your computer using USB
- Wait a few seconds, the ODIN screen should show you that a device is now connected
- Make sure that in ODIN NOTHING is checked, except the "Auto reboot" and "F. Reset Time" checkboxes. Press the "PDA" button, and select the "XWKDD_insecure.tar" file.
- Press "Start". ODIN you should now be flashing the kernel, and the device should reboot.

there many way to unbrick your phone
here what i found
Try this, it is slightly different from what the guy earlier said..
1.) Take off your back cover, remove your sim & mirco sd card.
2.) Remove your battery.
Make sure you have Odin OPEN with admin privileges!
Make sure you have the USB plugged into your PC but NOT your phone!
3.) Hold the volume buttons.
4.) Put the battery in.
5.) Put the USB in.
Continue holding the volume keys & you should pop into DOWNLOAD mode within a few seconds
or
1. remove battery, sim and sd
2. Open Odin
3. Connect usb to phone
4. Hold down both volume keys and power
5. but battery back in
6. once the screen blinks, let go of the power button
7. keep holding both volume keys until the downloading screen starts
8. Flash back to stock. I always go back to stock after something like this just to make sure that nothing got corrupted. Also check the re-partition option.

Another suggestion is to try the Jig
And if that is not working then your only option is Jtag
go to www.mobiletechvideos.com and he sells professional JIGs for $8 and he can also fix complete bricks for $40. I ordered my JIG yesterday but I'm expecting that I will have to have him do the Jtag on it because my phone just DIED badly yesterday. Nothing has worked. We'll see what happens.

The Jig is to get it into Download mode. As you had stated earlier you can do this without issue.
I am guessing you are just missing the "Nexus S" drivers on your machine. I had to install them before it would recognize my phone when I first went to ICS.
You should find a link for the "Nexus S" drivers in the Development section. ICS does not want the Galaxy S drivers.

Hi,
did you try installing google's SDK? try installing Java SDK x64 http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
then install http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
when installing Android SDK in the "extra" section check the usb drivers.
after it downloads you can try changing the drivers in the device manager of windows and use the drivers found here.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver
well thats what i did after odin didnt recognize my phone. but my phone wasnt bricked. hope it helps.
thank you for triying help to me!!!!!! I also installed ANDROID SDK bu noyhing help me to fix that problem and PC stil recognized my phone as an {unknown device} ((((((((
Edit: nvm i see that you can access download mode.
It is definitely a driver issue, try a different usb port or even a different computer.
thank's but i've already tried that in 4 different PCs but nothing helped me there are shown only unknown device

Try a new USB cable.
I can tell you from experience that I thought I was completely bricked...I went out and bought a brand new phone! BUT, when I got home from the store, I kept trying, and I finally got everything working.
I know it's been said, but really make sure you have the correct drivers on your computer! That's the thing that saved me. I didn't have them at first, and I finally found them...do you have a friend whose computer you can try?
I had the same issue with my phone a while back.. I called Samsung, told them it just stopped working, and somehow i managed to still be under warranty. I sent it to them, and they say they replaced some parts or something, and sent it back working like new.
However, i would suggest trying the JIG. Ive heard it works, just forces your phone into download mode, and ODIN at that point should recognize it. GL
(Might want to try cleaning your computer, the registry files, and rebooting. Cant tell you how often thats helped solve issues for me.)
Thanks all for help but my phone didnt fixedhttp://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
How I fix those bricks....
1. Download AI0 Vibrant Tool Box here...
http://www.google.dm/url?sa=t&rct=j...uJ2iBA&usg=AFQjCNHHTDPoSZz-8jqhAHy7S2lsO5Vq4g
2. Run the toolbox.exe file.
3. From menu do "Install Drivers" just to be sure & follow screen directions.
3. Remove the phone battery.
4. From AI0 Menu select "Flash to Stock"
5. From Menu select Reboot into download & Start ODIN
6. Connect your USB cable to phone.
7. Hold down both UP/Down Volume buttoms AND Power button.
8. While doing that Install your battery.
9. See if Odin will recognize the phone by highlighting the ID:COM to yellow.
10. If so then load the PIT & PDA files & flash back to stock Eclair 2.1
Thank you,but AIO Vibrant Toolbox 2.5 doesnt help me to fix my vibrant, there are still uknown device((((((((((((

[Q] Computer wont recognize device.

My computer won't recognize my gs4. I have the latest drivers installed and have re-installed many times. The only thing it does when I plug it in is charge. It sometimes says windows is searching for the latest driver when I plug it in, but it then it then says it was unplugged. ODIN did manage recognize it once and that was enough for me too root it and then flash the stock kernel back on. My phone then soft-bricked at the padlock after some rom flashing and I had to go to my friends house to flash it back to stock. Is there anything else I can do?
Am I the only one with this problem?
Does it give you the error "USB device not recognized"? If so there are some fixes for it. I fixed my friends when I sold him my S3. His PC did it.
Yes, a couple of times it did that. Now it just does nothing.
If you try and remove the device from your device manager does it do anything?
Right click on computer and go to properties to get to the device manager.
What would it be named? I looked through all the usb stuff and everything else and couldn't find anything that would be my device.

It would be any device with a yellow Triangle and an Exclamation point on it. Also uninstall KIES and your Samsung USB drivers, then reboot. Get updated USB drivers from the S4 link in my signature.
It did the same thing and game me the unknown device thing. It also said that the device malfunctioned. I guess ill just try again.

Ok let's try this fix first.
1. Remove phone from PC and shutdown and remove battery to shut off phone.
2. Plug USB cable into PC and phone.
3. Put battery back in and boot phone but…
4. As the phone boots, hold down Volume up and down and don't let go until you see you are in safe mode on the phone. It should say safe mode on the front screen.
5. This should reboot your phone into download mode and install drivers that are needed.
6. Your PC will indicate and recognize the phone.
7. Now if you check the notification drop down on your phone you should see USB/MTP options there in the notification area. MTP should be checked.
Still no luck. Maybe later I will re-install windows or just re install every driver on my computer.
The other fix to try is listed below.
1. Uninstall any previous instance of Kies/USB driver
2. Download the latest Kies, specific to your S3.
3. Download Samsung USB drivers 1.4.6.0 (I've tried newer versions but they all failed)
4. REBOOT
5. Disconnect from internet (VERY IMPORTANT!!! - forcing Windows to install local drivers ONLY)
6. With the phone disconnected, install Kies + USB drivers downloaded in steps 2,3
7. Connect the phone and let Windows install the drivers.
8. Reestablish the internet connection.

My experience with the "Device Malfunctioned" thing was due to a bad cable. It would charge, but wouldn't allow me to connect.
You might also try a different USB port on your computer. Often times the connectors on the back of a desktop system, which are hardwired to the motherboard, work more reliably than the front ones.

Personally don't think that'll help, the problem you are experiencing is your pc not recognising your device in adb mode, try using a different USB cable and a different USB socket on your pc.
You can check that adb is up to date in the android SDK console.

Galaxy Alpha USB Mass storage not Detected by PC

HI everyone
I am using 4.4.4 rooted galaxy alpha with developer mode on.
I have installed usb drivers supplied by samsung, despite many attempts my phones storage wont show up in My computer and because of that i am not able to transfer files to and fro from my phone.
Whenever i try to connect, a notification pops up in my PC saying USB device not recognised, however the phones seems to be charging.
also there is no notification on my phone relating to USB connection with my PC.
i have dchecked into settings and havent seen any menu inside relating to USB connections or Mass storage etc.
please help me with it thankyou
I had this problem a while ago. Turn debugging off and developer options. Then plug in the USB and turn dev/debugging back on. Worked for me
Nope, still not working. its still showing device not recognised
Do u have revoke debugging option?
