The speaker on my Neo seems to be dead, I got no ringtone and no music sound. I have done a system settings reset, but no complete factory reset. Has anyone experienced this, any suggestions, or is warranty repair imminent?

I think repair is the only option. Make sure to backup your data first before carying it in.

I dont have a NEO I have a XPERIA PRO, byut the same thing just got it and the sound failed intermitently, only could make it work by pushing the loudspeaker with a finger, then it will work for another little time. sad really....
I decided to repair it myself and in fact I think I made it but let´s say... "the Russian way" jaja lust strip out the whole piece and remove original contacts and replaced it with two tiny cables that now go from the contacts in the PCB to the contacts in the loudspeaker directly.... gues it was faulty contacts in the original piece that made it fail... hope this info helps you to figure out something...
Check if you can hear anything through the speaker by testing it in the service menu.
Enter *#*#7378423#*#* in the dialer.
Go to service tests and speaker, remember to turn up the volume.
If still can't hear anything I suggest that you have it fixed at a repair center. Contact your local support team for more info about repair.
Since this afternoon, if I want to change the volume with the hardware buttons (media volume, call volume etc...) I heard a loud sound that's like tapping on the back of the phones case with a hard object.
This sound is also heard when I select Audible selection (settings > sound). It will then be heard every single time I tap the screen (and also when changing the volume)
It's not caused by the speaker, because I can hear the sound aswell when using the stock headset.
EDIT: I changed the volume with WidgetSoid, same sound!
For those familiar with taking apart electronic devices , it's the same sound as connecting a speaker directly to a battery, the loud click.
All details concerning rom version are in my signature. If necessary, I can flash the rom again.

Fixed it for now. Flashed the firmware again.

Don't bump a fail thread after just 30 minutes.

your problem is that the phone thinks that a headset or headphone is inserted..... try to use ur headset to prove this....
get the app that disable headset/headphone and all ur media sound will go to your speakers. i had this problem too and the only solution ive found was the app.... its not a hardware problem but a system bug....... goodluck
I have read other posts on the forum but believe my problem is a bit different and quite weird (to me).
The symptoms are:
- sound through headphones is OK
- sound through the speaker when someone calls me on the phone is OK
- any other sound through the speaker is non-existent (ie ringtones, music, games)
I have tried rebooting, removing the battery, plugging/unplugging the headphones. I have tried the *#0*# code and pressed "speaker" but there's no sample sound heard (except through the headphones).
Does anyone else find it extremely odd that the speaker seems to work fine when someone is talking to me on the phone but nothing else? I'm guessing this means the problem is some kind of software or firmware issue. Correct?
Prior to the problem, I started with Android 2.3.3, rooted the phone, and flashed a stock ROM (KK2). I have upgraded to 2.3.6. Unfortunately I can't be sure the problem occured since 2.3.6 because I don't play music that much, and I play games without sound.
Should I (a) re-flash stock ROM, (b) factory reset, (c) call Samsung?
Grateful for any recommendations. (I'm not confident/competent with replacing the speaker myself)
regards.
Check sound settings first .
Factory reset.
Flash a stock rom .
Rooted so warranty void .
You will need to clear root with a stock rom flash and reset custom rom counter to zero with usb jig .

Receiving a call has a separate speaker, so your problem is with the back speaker which plays tones and other music, do a complete factory reset and check for sound if its still not playing, then it could be a hardware issue.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't realise there was a separate speaker.
I've performed a factory reset but no success.
I'll call Samsung today and arrange for the speaker to be replaced.
Thanks again
I've Had Success..
Hey guys..
I know this threads old, but I had success fixing an AU TELSTRA i9100T with the same Audio issues presented here. Runing GB 2.3.3 Totally Stock.. No root, nothing.
Every-time I increased the Speaker level to more that Half way, I'd hear a deep "CLICK" sound then no Audio any more through the Speaker..
When headphones are in, No problems at all..
Strange thing is, that once I turned it down below half way, and Blew air or puffed or even Talked Loudly into either of the 2 x Mics on the Top or Bottom of the phone, the sound would return OK.... but, again if I turned it up past Halfway ( sometime maybe one step over half way ) it would CLICK again and no Audio through the Speaker.
So, First I was thinking HW, then SW, tried Factory Reset.. no Help at all.. same issue..
Then, I flashed ROM to the latest Stock JB 4.1.2 XWLS8 Spanish ROM floating about the forums and This fixed it.. Perfect sound. No Hiccups.. :good:
Just wanted to share this..
LMS..
So when my headphones are plugged in (says headphones connected and i see the little icon)
When i go into the dialer and dial out they disconnect...
When i am in a call and i plug my headphones in (i get the icon)
When end the call the headphones disconnect...
and i have to pull them out and put them back in
Anyone else having this issue??
I have cleaning up bloat wear, deleting and freezing apps. Might have deleted or frozen something that would screw around??
Yeah...you may have deleted something that's causing this. I just tested it out for you...and it didn't disconnect my headset.
so would a factory reset revert everything or will i need to reload the rom???

Reload the ROM. Factory reset won't reapply the apps that are gone. Be careful what you delete.

Alright so I'm having the same problem and I didn't delete anything I liberally just bought the phone...did u find a fix? I use my headphones for calls all the time so this is rather annoying
Answer a call n my headphones disconnect...send a call and they disconnect...even when I replug them in during a call I can't use them to hear the person or talk...help?
I have had a few issues as well, more while listing to a podcast, and audio stops from headset, and/or Bluetooth streaming.. Media file still playing. Had to reboot to make the headphone jack work again. Who knows if it is hardware or software!
I have a problem when i use handsfree earphones, there is such bad distortion that people cannot hear me. It isnt the headset as i have tested another pair and it does the same and it works fine in my other phone. Im not sure if i did something in the service menu as i was trying to increase volume on my headset for music, but this resets with a soft reset so it cant be that. I recently upgraded to ICS and thought this would solve the problem but it hasent. I do not really want to do a hard reset as this will take ages to back everything up and put it all back to how it was!
I am also unable to access the Service Menu Audio setting now, nothing happens when selected, all the other options work, again i dont believe this is the problem.
Has anyone had this problem before and if so what is the solution. Thanks for your time and help.
Brilliant guys thanks for all your help!
The title pretty much says it all.
My S3 i9300 does not have outgoing voice for the phone, I can hear callers but they cannot hear me unless I plug in a headset then it all works fine. So I am trouble shooting it and I find that the voice recorder does not have a voice input either but when I use the video camera it picks up sounds and voice just fine. So unless there is a separate microphone for the video camera then I ruled out a broken mic.
So I search this and other forums and have turned off the noise reduction option in the phone settings and that did not work so I am out of ideas at this point for software and all the other suggestions are replace the mic.
It is running a factory android ver 4.1.2 baseband I9300XXELLA Kernel Ver 3.0.31-748978
Any ideas would be great as I am stumped
Bump.............
Is this one to hard for this the guys on this forum to solve or what?????

hi dude
to eliminate doubts about if there is a hardware or software problem
troubleshooting tips:
1 - you did tested physically the microphone - suppose to work fine (recording works for video camera)
2 - you did tested the apps camera and dialer - does not working (this suggest problems in this particular apps)
3 - backup your user apps (titanium, rom toolbox, go backup ... wherever ... your predilect backup app)
4 - do in recovery mode first the basic wipes ... cache ... dalvik ...
5 - reboot and test - if works ... good .... else next step
6 - again in recovery mode full wipe - reset factory
7 - reboot and test -
7.1 - I do a plus, after this I do a Factory data reset. Just to eliminate any residual stuffs. if works ... good and you can do a recover user apps .... else next step
8 - flash the favorite rom
("custom or stock - I really like custom ROMs ... more power .., more performance ... more control ... there is the problem with samsung warranty - who cares ... LOL" from old post)
9 - full wipe ... "zero old garbages" ... reset to factory default ... internal format ... etc ...
10 - reinstall the apps from backup, just apks ... test it
11 - verifying that all right, do recover your data apks ... etc ... test it
12 - and ... voilà ... else
13 - service centre
good luck
PS.
for stock fw search it from sammobile (stock rom - to your country / language) - needs register
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Samsung Galaxy S III/GT-I9300 - Wiki - look this ... many and good links - how to install , root, recover , etc ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_III/GT-I9300
or here in xda - I do recommend a custom rom rooted ... try It ... you will want more and more power ... LOL ...
[10/04] INDEX of ROMs [Android Development Forum] - read in changelogs if the rom support multi csc ... nice fun

Thanks for the help PS,
This one is a real challenge. After doing as you suggested and that did not work out I did take it to the local Samsung service center and what they told me was.......
Water damage and it needed a new system board. However I did get them to do a factory wipe and reload but still the same issues. No mic for regular phone or voice memos. However the mic works fine when I plug in a headset.
So not I am really stuck as how can water damage kill the mic on only some apps? The mic still works fine when recording video and everything else on the device works fine.
Did you find a solution for this problem?

Its strange that only some apps are effected unless there is a sperate mic that is used by video recorders. Where as the phone app uses the one at the bottom

I was thinking the same thing that there must be a second mic but in all the googleing and other forum research I have only been able to locate the one. The phone works great with an earbud headset but once I unplug it even during a call the person on the other end of the line cannot hear anything I say.
If anyone has a totaled I9300 that they do not want to repair because the screen is broken let me know because if it has a good system board I may be interested.
Thanks

Hey I have the same problem as yours and indeed there is two microphones in the s3. One located on the bottom and one on the top. During calls the top one is there for noise reduction, but for video recording the top one is used to grab the sound (maybe both) but top one is active for sure. Try blowing/tapping on the top hole during a video you will understand.

Very interesting that this is true, I will try and fix on it some more but since I cannot get the mic parts nor do I have the skills for serface mount soldering. I suspect this is now relegated to the kids for playing with as a small tablet. With a good protective case of course. Thanks for the responce.
My samsung galaxy grand 2 has the same problem too.. no mic sound even I do factory reset nothing change.. and I bring it to Samsung service center because it still has a warranty.. The customer service said they replace the board and now its working.. :good:
