Never heard of that. I'm sure they didn't do it because it was rooted. I've contacted them multiple times from my phone. Other rooted phones. Hell, I think I even let it slip one time that it was rooted. They didn't care.

It was difficult to get real facts out of the conversation since it was mainly charged with emotion lol. But she was having issues sending text messages originally. Mind you it was rooted only, with original stock rom.
I tell sprint at the beginning of every conversation that I am rooted. And I have had more conversations than I would like. More than likely they couldn't get it to do something and are blaming it on being rooted. I have had that happen more than once, some of their techs are just plain ignorant.

Bingo. My bet is on that! Some little worm of a tech probably did something wrong and it resulted in loss of service on the phone. Now they're blaming it on root and are saying they refuse to help unless the phone is back to stock.

Aparently she went to the Sprint Store. The guy there said you have SuperUser your phone has been rooted. And then proceeded to de-activate it. Now it wont even activate.
Original stock rom, just plain rooted. So as of right now sprint store cant touch it, since its now out of warranty. And I imagine made her feel like a criminal about it.
Called sprint and the nice lady said, even though its a stock rom just having rooted alone can cause issues with PRL update and hands free activation in general. she said i just just un-root it and try to activate it. and of course she gave me a advisory that if i chose to root it again that was my decision.
It wont be my decision since my lady is scarred by this event and made me promise to never touch her phone again.
Since HTC gave us the unlock, I'd make them give you a new phone. HTC allows the root or they wouldn't have given the unlock. And they deactivated it, that's bull****.

And that is what they were after. They probably knew from talking to her that she wasn't the one that rooted the phone and wanted to discourage her from letting someone else ever doing it again. It's too bad that they've manipulated and misinformed her in that way. Being able to nandroid is reason enough to root a phone if you're like me and cannot afford a problematic phone. It's great to be able to restore a previously working backup when necessary.
Like someone said earlier, they like to point their finger at root when their level 1 tech can't figure out what's wrong with a phone.

Next time, if you go in to get something fixed, uninstall the superuser app with titanium backup or by removing it from system/app. You can reflash the su zip when you get the phone back.
From my experience, all they do is check for superuser in the app drawer. If they ask if its rooted, say no.

Rubbish. Complete rubbish. They are jerking you around. Call this number 1-866-727-0665, it's sprint executive services. They will ask where to direct your call tell them you are having service issues. When they connect you, don't mention root at all, just that it won't activate.. They will walk it through from there.. If it's completely stock you have no worries, it will activate.. If for some reason they won't help you, activate it online..
Trust me they are just douchebagging you.

Not trying to troll, but I would of never mentioned root in the first place. Obviously your other half didn't know that but unfortunately, letting sprint know got her in this mess. You rooted her phone, she had a issue, you wasnt there to fix it, she calls customer service, she falls for the bull**** they sold her, now you have a perfectly deactivated phone. I don't care if HTC released and unlock tool, sprint still cares less about rooted phones. Every young sprint employee that I've ever talked to in the stores seems like they are trained to not have or deal with a rooted phone. Why wouldn't customer service be the same. I've talk to one Guy at the sprint place where I pay my bill, and he was just so sure that root screws up your phone completely. Its like they have been brainwash to think that.
My point is, you can't go telling sprint employees that you have root. Sprint would do everything in their power to deny of service.

It's beyond ridiculous that they deactivated the phone over it being rooted. Being rooted means that you no longer get a warranty, not that you no longer get service. Ever since my hero, any time I take a phone in, I either set ADW as the default launcher and hide the SU app, or uninstall SU completely. Obvoliously you should also make sure you're running a stock-looking ROM as well. Doing this, despite many issues and device swaps, I've never once been questioned over being rooted. Also, just because HTC has provided an unlock method, doesn't mean Sprint can't take a stand against it by saying that it nullifies your warranty.

Idk if any of the members live in woodbridge va, but once I went wit my mom to return her sgs2 for an EVO 3d, and the store manager was there n I star to talk 2 him about the EVO vs the sgs2 ( he has the sgs2) and then he told me that he just to have the EVO rooted n overcloked n i star to show him my EVO wit the eternity ROM n the karnel from ziggy, and the scores that I was gettin on the benchmarks.

ok about to root and rom. will verizon know if i call them for service questions? what i mean is, i suppose for a tech support call they can do over-the-phone diagnostics. right? if i call for tech support are they able to determine i am rooted and rommed through their diagnostics?
would i need to return to stock prior to making a tech support call to verizon?

I'm not sure why you'd call Verizon for diagnostics on a device that's not running their software anymore. I'd think talking to the dev would make more sense. I suppose the could tell, but care? Probably not. I told the manager where I got mine that I intended to root it as soon as I got home shd that my old Incredible was already rooted. His only question was how much better the battery life gets.
They will try to help you for sure but they may no be able to since you do not have stock. They can not look up your phone info on their end but they may ask you for info like software or info about the phone from about phone that could give it away. Honestly you're probably better off posting your issue on this forum and having XDA help.
They wouldn't be too helpful not because you rooted but because you have a different piece of software on your phone.
It'd be like calling Microsoft because your copy of Ubuntu is acting up.

I don't think they can see what software you are using, but I do believe they may be able to see your radio version.
So what about if i pay my bill with the My Verizon app and the thunderbolt ( which they know i have) is not yet supported by them? Not that i care but id think that be a huge red flag lol

Anyone can google "My Verizon.apk Thunderbolt", download it, and put it on their phones. Even non rooted fellas. So no, this should not throw up any red flags other than you are using a modded application.

I did this a week ago, my TB lost 3G completely at the house and 4G only works in PHX. It just happens the wife's D1 had no 3G so I called and we went through some settings on the phone and they checked the IMEI number etc. Found out the following day after talking to several Verizon people that the issue was the SIM card on the phone so I took it in and they replaced it and that fixed it.
I was rooted when I called, I went back to stock before taking it in and replacing the SIM card. They knew nothing at all.
It would be wise to just find help elsewhere. I find that online support is better than verizons anyways
I am an AT&T tech rep, so I can only speak for here. Bu universally most of us, despite carrier, that know what they are doing will answer the same from what I've found.
When someone walks into the device support center with an obviously rooted I won't exchange it for them. I will help them, find answers, and tell them how to fix it. I will also explain any known problems, or past problems, I know about with various roms. But I won't exchange the phone. And it's not to be mean. But often times when a person does come in with a rooted phone the issue they are experiencing is with the radio they flashed or the rom they are using. I see this a lot with the Inspire as is.
If I deem it to be an actual hardware issue and I can very the rom is not the issue then I will tell them how to take the phone back to stock so I can exchange it. For the Inspire I keep a handy sd card with the stock image there that I can flash it back right away.
If I know a phone has been rooted and the person brings it back to me with it flashed back to stock, I will exchange it without a problem. The phone is still under warranty and the warranty does explain in most products that not current software alterations exist (Ie: rooting, clockwork mod, unlock boot loader). If it's back to stock then warranty guidelines are meet.
Now with that being said, I have physical access to the device. Over the phone, the only way they would really be able to know is if they asked the software version, baseband version, kernel version, etc... and knew what they were off hand. Things like that. They can't magically peer into your phone over the air to see what's going on with it. That's the reason for their little script techs over the phone have to run through.
Ultimately, the advice mentioned above about asking the dev or the rom thread is the best you'll get. Most times this is your best place to look after a custom rom has been flashed. If a problem is deemed hardware and not software and you have to have it exchanged, flash back to stock and take it in. No tech rep will care if it was flashed back to stock (unless they are having a really miserable day and can prove it's rooted. but that's few and far between and not specific to any company).

My ear phone speaker was blown so I cleared everything, reverted to stock with hboot 1.4 and s-on and took it to the store and asked them to fix the ear piece for me.
While he was entering data he asked if everything else was ok with the phone. I said ya it was pretty sweet, then slipped and told him it sometimes it was kinda buggy and froze some but no worries really.
He looks at me and says oh I'll take a look at it for you. Of course noticing there was an update he told me about it. I told him I'm not one for updates... if it isn't broke don't fix it right?
He looks at me and says "I see, well we will see if this solves your problem and updates to 2.08"

That sounds like a sprint rep, when I bought my 3d the guy was activating it on my account and then said oh there's an update available let me get that for you, even after I specifically told him DO NOT UPDATE THIS PHONE. He just did it anyway like an ass.

Download the PG86IMG RUU you will find in the development section
put it on sdcard
boot into bootloader
flash update
type 'oem writesecureflag 3' into a terminal to give s-on
just leave it stock unrooted with s-off.
then they can update all they want and you have a way back.
hell just flash the latest hboot so they have nothing to blame it on.

That sucks man, for the OP and you. When I got mine the update thing came up and I told the rep to not update it, he said "ok no problem, just know that updates sometimes fix things" but hit cancel right away anyway.
I guess it depends who you get you know? =\ If I was in your shoes though, I would have just asked for a new one right there since you were just buying it.

This is so absolutely true. It makes me physically cringe when I see people clamoring to unroot their phones because they have to make a visit to Sprint.
They.Just.Don't.Care.
EVERY time I've gone in, I've gone in Rooted, and EVERY time, i've not only gotten exactly the same service I should expect, but usually, end up getting into a conversation with a rep about some new feature that Ive gotten, usually ending up providing dropbox links for apks, advice, etc.

I am not sure if this will work every time, but when I was in, I left the SD Card in my pocket. When they returned it they mentioned that they were going to update for me but since there wasn't a card in it they couldn't. I have to take out back in. I think it needs to be replaced so hopefully I can get lucky again.

I have never walked into a Sprint Store in my life with reverted phone software. They take it like it is or I raise hell.
Most, if not all software issues can be resolved by simple trial and error, searching the forums, or a bit of know-how.
Hardware issues are the ONLY reason why one from XDA should ever visit a Sprint Store for phone assistance.
In a case like this, it might be a good idea to temproot and remove the security certs...the phone will download the update, but the actual installation will fail
When I bought my 3d launch day, I told the rep not to even open the box, that I would set it up and if I had problems come back.
With my OG evo I had the speaker replaced twice, both times, fully rooted with cyanogenmod. Told him I tried on stock rom and speaker was still distorted. Both times, replaced with no problem.
As mentioned before, they don't care so long as they have common sense. If it is an obvious hardware issue don't sweat it.

Ok I'm a lead tech at an S&R location in TX. I root every phone I get and encourage my customers to do the same (if they seem capable). While Sprint discourages rooting phones, they eliminated the prior rule about not working on rooted devices a while ago. The only thing techs won't be able to assess is software, unless they're like me and love seeing rooted devices. That being said, any and all hardware issues are to be fixed as stated by Sprint Service and Repair policy. Best thing is to just be honest and let the tech know what's going on and why you don't want anything updated. I'll keep working on pushing phone unlocking from the inside, you guys keep making progress in development.

I don't know if anything like this has been posted yet, but I looked and didn't see any similar posts. Yesterday I went to a Sprint repair center to get my phone fixed as I thought it was bricked. I mean it was locked, I couldn't flash, get into recovery, or even factory data reset. I ended up fixing it though which is not important. What is important is the tech who was very cool saw that my phone was rooted. After he determined he couldn't fix it, he said he would replace it. I was thinking about having to pay the $100 insurance deductible but he said no because I still have S-On. So he ordered me another phone with no charge or questions, but I canceled it later that evening as I ended up fixing my own... furthermore, he went into my account and deleted a bunch of notes stating that my phone was rooted. Some punk at Sprint Customer care put those notes in there. The tech said they could tell whether or not we were rooted, and someone took an extra step to notate that, so he deleted all those notes.
Just thought I would pass this on. May be useless information to some, but I found it interesting...
That is a very cool tech. The other person probably doesn't know much about the phone and was educated into believing a rooted user is a bad user who abuses their services.

ROOT and S-ON are not the same thing. The tech who deleted all that stuff was nice, but clearly did not know what he was talking about. S-ON does NOT mean that you are not rooted.

I got to say that your lucky, and I had something similar happen to my with my Evo 4G. But one thing I find strange is that he was able to "delete" the notes that a Sprint Rep placed on your account.
All Ticketing systems are made so no notes can be deleted once they are submitted, plus he wouldn't have been the person who initiated the ticket in the first place. I would double check, I know their systems well and I think its best to know exactly what he did.
I am rooted with S-ON.
Unless you tell them it is rooted Sprint won't know unless a tech gets the phone to power on and sees the superuser.apk.
Wish all reps were like that haha. Everytime I've needed anything from them the techs are always so special. Back with my EVO I remember going in for a replacement before I had rooted it and the tech tried to say I was rooted and they wouldn't do anything because I had launcher pro as my launcher XD so funny I had to explain to him it was an app. But even when I had root as long as it looked stock I haven't had issues with them.

Hey XDA. Well, today I went to sprint to get a replacement. Issues were: Reboots, Lock Ups, Overheating, and launching apps causing reboots. I explained how this happened after I finally updated to OTA 2.17, they said they will run their tests
(I say BS). I explained that obviously that whatever is going on with my phone "they wont see it" (they will say that nothing is wrong with it) Now, I'm stuck without a phone until tomorrow. After the first time I went there, he said that they needed my SD card. I said BS, why?, I said that the phone is rebooting without the SD Card, I even took the phone while frozen at the lock screen. He said that the ticket # said that I was only claiming to have issues with Spider Man 3D. I immediately flamed up! I said that it overheats, has constant reboots, freezes, AND THAT SOME APPS REBOOT THE PHONE! He said that he will tell the techs to re check it. I'm hoping that they get the lockups, As I also told him that I hard reset the phone 3 times, he said that they will test it. I'm starting to regret my EVO 3D

No, the problem arrived after unrooting. I did not create it. Rooting doesn't create problems if you know what you're doing.

Just for the record, my best friend also had these same issues on a 3d that had never been rooted....mine on the other hand has been rooted to hell and back and always stable. Real issues do arise, rooted or not....it doesn't mean he caused the issues and yes, most Sprint techs are completely useless to resolve these sort of problems.

My point exactly. Thanks Bro. See, the Sprint Rep kept telling me that his gonna do a "Hard Reset" after telling him I did that more than 3 times, and the problem persists. I wanted to speak to one of the techs, maybe they would know what was actually happening.
Don't ever misunderstand rooting. It is basically stock with customization.
Best of luck to ya man. I hope there is a smarter than average tech there that can actually do something for you, if not, my advise to you is to call Sprint customer service at the next sign of issues and just politely tell them of your problems and experiences and that you would like a new phone. It's usually as easy as that.
Sometimes, you really have to just flash the customer service person if you want something done.

You can tell them you did a hard reset a 100 times. It won't matter to them. They have to follow process and procedure to test your phone for your issue. Yes this may sound stupid and yes the tech may give you a bs answer. It happens.
What you can do is try a different Sprint store.
And like others say, I advise to get insurance. It does help a lot.

You have better chances if you go to like a retail store not a corporate 1. Like in the mall or something. They aren't really Sprint.
But I have also had problems.
And I also hate Sprint customer service.

Actually that comment was completely necessary....he did say the problem started happening after unrooting the phone. U made the decision to root and unroot ur phone to begin with.....I dont see ur logic for being mad at sprint for a problem that u created.

See, People like you don't belong here. If my phone was Okay rooted, and if I unroot via RUU. The phone goes back to stock, as in, how it came back. The problems started after unrooting.

Unless you caused the damage while you were rooted and it only showed up after you unrooted. How is anybody to know?

Are u listening to urself? Use some kind of logic with what ur sayin. If the phone was fine when u got it....u rooted it and it was fine.....u unrooted and now there is a problem.....where do u think the problem is? U really feel sprint is at fault for this? Are u ****in kiddin me? Its people like u that shouldnt be ****in around with their phone if ur goin to blame other people when there is a problem......everyone knows when u start messing around with ur phone there is a risk of u ****ing it up.....and u Sr. did exactly that.....so dont blame sprint for what u did.

Was it unnecessary? For all we know he could have made this thread to justify his means in messing his phone up. Do you have proof that he did everything correctly? Do we know if he unrooted right before he brought it in? And what does your friends"never been rooted phone" have to do with a phone that's been rooted and unrooted?

I have a quick question. How did you root the phone? Were you 1.5 hboot and did the brick method to root it? That is how I rooted mine and it started getting hot so I put it back to stock and took it in. They told me they were going to replace it for me andI had a new one the next day.
I was having issues with the EVO 3D that I originally got with the service at Sprint; the phone radio completely stopped working for me. Took it to the local Sprint store and they wanted to charge me $30 for something that was not my fault as the phone was unrooted and used with normal apps. Hoping it doesn't happen again as it took a week and a half for HTC to "repair" (replace) and return it.

Me too, I prefer the pre made ones.
Just brick the damn phone and take it in with the brick method from the downgrade. This thread is either too funny or to much drama. I'd prefer you just get your phone and get it replaced if you have had problems. Rooting isnt going to cause it if you had tried multiple roms and clean wipe configurations. Just soft brick it with the method and be done with it.
I personally have a Evo 3d that the digitizer has been going out for months now. I haven't got it replaced, but you can rest assured when you bring it like that to another store, that they are gonna look for watermarks and other signs of failure. If you don't show any other signs and it won't boot, then they are going to replace it.

Just thought I would share this with everyone. Best Buy has a new policy with their warranty for phones (at least the ones by me do).
You no longer have to ship your phone in for service. All you do is go to the store, tell them your problem, they ship a new phone (the last couple I had replaced arrived in less than 36 hours), and you bring your phone in when the new/re-manufactured one arrives.
This is great if you have a problem where your current phone still works. You don't have to dig out an old phone, or rent a POS loaner phone from BBY, but you can still do all of those things if your phone is unusable.
Like I said just though I would share this info. I think BBY keeps making their protection policies better and better.

This is what they did for me when I needed a replacement about six months ago.
They did not offer it to me until I spoke with the manager because i didn't want to be without a phone for a few days or use one of their loaner phones.

Best buy insurance, ftw. I will never buy another phone anywhere else. Im on my 3rd lte and i got the lte free because they had no more 3d's. They ask basic questions about what happened and then ship it out. I got my last replacement in 2 days. Took it in on a Monday at 7pm and got my replacement on Wednesday at 7pm.
Awesome. I love black tie (bb). I had to replace due to malfunctions and no questions or hassles in fact the reason I signed up for black tie was the guy indicated I would never have to send anything in and that I would get a new replacement directly from the store which they did. I even had the guy write and confirm that on my sales receipt because I didn't believe him.

Thank you all for the info. I won't be going to Sprint stores anymore. BB sounds like the way to go now. Back when I worked there it definitely wasn't but a lot has changed since then. Good to know.
My EVO has developed a problem where I'm getting all sorts of crazy noise on the screen. Definitely a hardware problem as it even has problems with the HTC logo on boot. I'm currently S-OFF with the latest CM release installed. Do I need to unroot and restore back to Sense before I take the phone into Best Buy, or do they not care?

I would at least flash a stock rom and splash screen before taking it in. Other than that, my local store doesn't care about root.

When i took my last one in i had viper on it but i was taking it in because the screen was crushed. It was still usable thougg and he was sittin there going through the different venom options just amazed. Then i told him i just wanted to erase the data and internal storage and he was amazed by twrp too lmao. He didn't give half a sht.

Yeah, my store is the same way, but I doubt every store is the same. To be safe I would backup, flash a stock rom, bring it in and show them the problem, then recover until your "new" phone gets in and the re-flash a stock rom when you bring it back.
I doubt they'd care, but this should cover your a$$ either way.

Best buy covers software though right? So why would it matter? There's nothing saying they don't cover rooted devices. I even asked the manager when i got my 3d and he said if i bricked it I'm covered. So why flash back to stock? Unless youre having issues that could be rom/kernel related of course.. then youll obviously want to flash to something else to make sure its not the rom and then go back to stock to show them its happeneing on there also.

Because it is better to be safe than sorry. If you read the terms and conditions, they don't list software as covered. They could deny coverage if they wanted to. Every store is not the same, but if you hand them a phone that is obviously not stock, there is more of a chance of them questioning it. I don't think they would, but it takes me 2 minutes to flash back to stock, so I'd rather avoid a potential headache. I'm getting a "new" phone anyway, so what do I care if I leave cm10 on my old one. Plus, it's a good way to wipe your phone.

I'm currently in this situation where my screen is cracked. I too was wondering if I needed to unroot before I had them ship the phone out for repair. What stock ROM does everyone suggest?

I see where you are coming from but A. You wouldn't have the power to set a company wide policy B. You would have to account for all the phones sold with the protection plan being quoted "for any reason at all" C. As low hourly wage employee you wouldn't care
