Roebeet said in a different post that Viewsonic has released a press release about the 4349 upgrade and that makes him feel that the 4349 OTA will be re-released at some point by Viewsonic.
I wolud like to read the press release but I cannot find it posted anywhere.
Roebeet, could you provide a link to the press release?
I don't doubt your information at all, I would just like to read it.
Thank you for your help and all your good work.
Anyone else know where to find this press release?
Thanks, Gary
not Roe, but I could only assume that the update will be re-released, since it appears that all Woot tablets are now being shipped with 4349 pre-installed. If they didn't release it, users that never come here could get upset that the newest firmware isn't available to them.
It was back in mid April - they had a notice here: http://www.viewsonic.com/gtablet/news.htm
Initially it talked about the new update, and that it had Flash, the extra languages etc. But 24 hours later they pulled the update, and then the notice a few days later (I actually had something to do with that as I had a VS contact and mentioned that pulling that notice might be a good idea).
I have no idea what their plans are, or why their remaining stock is being shipped with 4349 - this is all a mystery to me. I've personally given up on them and I assume that we'll never see another OTA update. Every time I've called their CS department about 4349, they've given me the gojimi XDA link on how to downlevel to 3588. What a mess.

Can we really assume that this is their remaining stock? It seems that every time we think this, there is another Woot sale, or Tiger Direct surplus that's selling.
Right now, I'd estimate that the G-Tablet unit sales total surpasses iPad's sales by a landslide. These newest tablets were obviously manufatured after 4349 was released, right? That means that they are merely 2 months old, at most. souns like they are still in production to me.

Umm. No. From Wikipedia:
Apple released the first iPad in April 2010, and sold 3 million of the devices in 80 days.[13] During 2010, Apple sold 14.8 million iPads worldwide,[14][15][16] representing 75 percent of tablet PC sales at the end of 2010.[17]
By the release of the iPad 2 in March 2011, more than 15 million iPads had been sold[18]— more than all other tablet PCs combined.[citation needed] In 2011, it is expected to take 83 percent of the tablet computing market share in the United States.[19]
I think the first 'big woot rush' of G-tabs was like 10K.

Yeah, our little tablet buddy is (and always will be) in the minor leagues, sales-wise. However, Woot and TigerDirect seem to have bought most of what was left and a Woot-off is underway now.
I would guess (and it's only a guess) that we are talking MAYBE 60,000 at most. The November run was a thousand, and then the new stock came in but then Staples pulled their inventory. So there was probably a lot of devices sitting on a shelf, somewhere.
The devices from Woot! / Amazon / TD / J&R are probably from the second run, again that's my guess. And, at some point in the last two months, someone made the decision to put 4349 on them - I assume to get Flash pre-installed. It's much easier to do that using a process like nvflash versus someone physically installing it on each device manually. I doubt very highly that these new devices are actually two months old, or newer - more likely they are from December / January.
Flash was promised.
One of the reasons for my original question was that Viewsonic's web site promises official Flash support "anticipated sometime in May" and May has already passed. (The web site does not say May of what year).
If I remember right Flash Player Logo was shown as supported on the box as sold by Viewsonic through Sears, Office Depot, and probably at Staples although they were already pulled before I bought mine.
It seems like this would be a good case for a Law Firm to look into and should probably be a class action law suit.
Now I wonder: When will this official Flash support be available?
From their web site!
"Adobe Flash Support:
The Viewsonic gTablet hardware fully supports the Adobe Flash Player. An automatic firmware update will offer gTablet users the option to install the Flash Player plug-in, and is anticipated in May, 2011.
Advanced users may download and install Adobe Flash Player available here. Access the download link from your gTablet browser to install directly to the device. For best performance, make sure to fully power down and reboot the system before accessing Flash content.
(Please note that ViewSonic cannot provide technical support for unofficial installations of Flash players. We will fully support the Adobe certified Flash Player when it is released for the gTablet.)"
If 4349 has been pulled, what future OTA will allow the option to install the Flash Player plug-in, and where is that support?

Thanks for the link. I remember when the site still had the reference to 4349 even though the OTA had already ended.
I thought maybe there was a seperate press release.

I had forgotten that it wasn't supported except with 4349 -- that's true. So, seven months after I purchased my Gtablet, I still don't have a stock ROM that has an "official" Flash version (not counting 4349 since I could have easily missed that update - 24 hours isn't a long time).
"Anticipated" is the key word, on their site. Don't think that wasn't added accidentally - gives them leeway to delay things yet again.
Here is a fun act. On the support page, where it says software update back in April there's a link that's called "please see news for more info". If you click on that link, it takes you to the news page where the gtablet software update link takes you back to the support page. Look at the parts of screen shots that I took. The top part is the support page and the bottom is the news page.
That's because they don't care.
All I can find is video output to 1 secondary monitor. I need to know if I can (using iDisplay or whatever) output from a pc to 8-12 android tablets in extended desktop. So the tablets would make 1 big monitor. Operating system on pc side can be linux or windows 7/xp. Anyone know or try this? The guy at work that wants this, saw the verizon commercial......yay...
http://youtu.be/KNd9-PJQPGc
Doesn't seem very comfortable to use O_O
If you can buy 10 devices for displaying windows, than you can buy a monitor, too
haha. Well its for a show/event. And they want to give them away after the presentation. So monitors/tv's will not do, as most people have flights to catch afterward.

You think that will work? Looks like that is 1 tablet to show a pc desktop. I will have up to 12 tablets physically touching eachother to make it look like 1 pc desktop. If I need to have 12 usb cord/plugs thats fine, but I still am shaking my head at this director for asking me to do this.

iDisplay got back to me, with bad news :/
Hello,
Thank you for contacting us.
Unfortunately simultaneous work with multiple devices is not currently supported in iDisplay for
Windows, sorry.
It is currently supported in iDisplay for Mac OS only.
Please feel free to contact us if you need any further assistance.

Another email to/from the company. It sounds like OSX can run up to 8 devices simultaneously as additional monitors. So that may be what we do.
Hi everyone,
Sooo I'm looking for any news on the 'Net for the ICS update for my phone the HTC Amaze 4G.
Instead of finding about an update, I find news fast-forwarding my phone becoming an insta-brick courtesy of Google:
"Android Developers say bye to Menu button And say hello to the Action Bar
Mobile phones News
By John McCann
Friday at 16:17 UTC | Tell us what you think [ 4 comments ]
android-developers-say-bye-to-menu-button
Less buttons - more touchy touchy
Android Developers are being reminded by Google to shift their attention away from the Menu button and focus instead on the Action Bar.
The Menu button function is commonplace in pre-3.0 versions of Google's Android operating system. It allows users to view options for a particular application by pressing the Menu button on their device.
With the introduction of Honeycomb (version 3.0) and now Ice Cream Sandwich (version 4.0) the function has become redundant as these operating systems remove the need for physical buttons.
All change please
This year we expect to see a new wave of devices running Ice Cream Sandwich, so developers need to make sure they update their apps to use the Action Bar.
Developers need to follow the new Android user experience as many Android devices are expected in 2012 to feature button free designs.
Apps will continue to work on the new software, with Google building an action overflow button which acts as the menu button.
The action overflow button will display on all applications which have not been updated to Android 3.0+, even if they do not require it.
Are you all for button free devices, or will you be pining for your menu, home and back buttons?
From Android Developers"
THIS crap upsets me greatly: I just spent $$$ on an unlocked phone (Amaze 4G) and now Android is calling the hardware shots??????? What a load of junk.
It seems like Google wants to be a monopoly too....And we thought Iphones were bad...
How do you folks feel about this?

Settle down cowboy.
This is Googles OS, they can do whatever they want with it. they can stop supporting it if they really wanted. Just like HP did with webos. I dont mind this really though at all, i liked the way WP7 was with all touch screen pretty much
just because google is recommending/wanting to do this the phone manufacturers still have to be on board. seen this posted elsewhere are people were mighty pissed about their buttons (maybe) going away. money talks and if manufacturer x has buttons and manufacturer y doesn't you can vote with your dollars.
seems to me that both can be included anyways
Look everyone,
I just wanted to post this here and get feedback, as I'm new to smartphones O.K.? This is not F.U.D.
I also do not appreciate the egotistical stance voiced by many I've seen on this forum so far...........When I signed up for the XDA forums, it was to get involved, listen (via reading), and share (when relevant) and not get bum rushed by "know it alls."
I don't understand: When you read the article, it does not specifically state "This will be only for applications" To me, clearly Google wants to monopolize phone hardware also, I don't know...
Google is trying to eliminate redundancy, which is good but...
Come on, I just bought my phone and it ain't cheap! Getting info like this....
P.S. Some people who posted are talking like they know exactly what this article is pointing at.....Can you please explain this article seeing as though I missed the articles point?
Thanks for understanding,

read buddy http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2399437,00.asp
Instead, Google recommends that app developers begin using the "action bar,"

Honestly, this is not BAD. its a opinion. a lot of people dont like having to press the menu button to do EVERYTHING, and then there are those people who do i guess. i can see for important things. Google has already begun to throw away the capacitive buttons anyways on the google nexus

I've discovered that you have to have a thick skin here in the Amaze forum. The Hero forum was much more pleasant. The price of advancement I guess.
As long as you follow forum rules such as: don't start new redundant threads, don't ask a question before using the search button, and don't correct xboarder's spelling and grammar (just kiddin ya X) you'll be fine.
And relax, the Amaze is a great phone and won't be obsolete for a while yet.
It sounds like phones with physical menu buttons can still be manufactured but with newer versions of Icecream the physical menu button will be useless. Instead all apps will have to be developed to use action bar menu. Then menu options are not disappearing they are going to be more touch screen orientated. No big deal. Phones with small screens need physical buttons, but phones with large screens can function with only touch and swype actions. Similar to the way tablets function.

Google is trying to address a serious inconsistency in the OS. I have a Motorola Xoom with ICS. The problem is that some applications are using a menu button in the bottom row which generally makes it bottom left, and others are putting the menu on the screen in the top right. Yes totally opposite screen placement. So the user experience is poor. Google is asking application developers to standardize. That way if you want to go to the menu for an application you will know where to find it.
Also the move away from the capacitive buttons is another step toward user experience consistency. Right now each phone even from the same manufacturer can have the home, back, menu, search, etc. in a different placement order. When it is moved to the display and then managed by the OS it opens the door for more consistency. Which again is good for the user experience.
If they can improve user experience consistency *and* change the UI prioritization model so the UI is less impacted by "background" activities then they'd really be stepping up in maturity.

I've noticed this too. The vibrant forums took a while to get to this point of what I can only call frustration/irritation, but I am thinking that was because that was more of an entry level into android, while most people here are early adopters.
I think that the users here could be reminded to be a little more understanding, it makes the experience for everyone a lot better if people are at least nice to NEW users(low post count). We were all new once, and I'd like to think this isn't the way users on XDA are evolving as a whole..
Edit: I think that the menu button is awesome- it offers some of us the ability to do more.. and it keeps the options simple for the rest of the people who don't want something more. We don't ALL need a menu button.. but XDA people do.
Well, I for one like my buttons.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA App
I like the physical buttons, because less screen space is spent mapping the same buttons. I have the Amaze and also a ICS tablet (Xoom) and on ICS, a good amount of pixels is spent replicating the menu, home, app switcher and back buttons. It seems like a waste of real estate to be drawing buttons on a device like the Amaze that already has them, but if hardware manufacturers stop including the physical buttons, more room on the device is available for the screen, so I guess the point becomes moot.

The first part of this quote, in effect, places one of our feet in the "insta-brick phone" category. I did a lot of research about smartphones before I bought one and this news caused me some concern.
The point of this post was that I just bought a new phone which cost me $$$ and I'm upset that Google would in effect tell phone hardware developers to "get on board" when it's Android and the phone developers who are working together to further Google and not the other way around.

This is just bad taste on the part of Google IMHO and to defend myself yet again "No, I'm not panicking..I'm upset."

Button requirements have not changed since the release of android. Google is trying to move the platform forward. This sort of thing happens. Return your phone if you need iPhone type stagnation. And in all reality there is no reason that Google cannot map the menu button to the overflow function on newer releases, so there is no dead button.

Another article I read mentioned Google wanting to nix the "search" button also.
This costs money buddy and I'm not rich.
Regarding your comment:
I'm not denying that fact.
All I'm saying is that for now, only 1 phone has 3 buttons: Google's proprietary phone. Why should every company bow the knee to Google and build a phone around a now Open source phone OS?
The menu button CAN be used for other things.
Finally, If I wanted an Iphone with one power button, proprietary ownership of hardware and apps with all functions onscreen, I would have bought an Iphone.
These consortium companies such as HTC, who support Google, need to put their corporate feet down and tell Google to back off.
I'm not feeling the panic you are. Either app developers will map the existing menu button to act as the action bar, or there will be an action bar touchscreen button on the screen. If google and phone and app developers were to "insta-brick" all existing phones that have a menu button it would drive everyone's next purchase in another direction. You don't have to rush out and buy a new phone tomorrow. The sky is NOT falling.

Buddy, it sounds like you have buyers remorse. And the Amaze should have a decent lifespan with ICS coming out soon so take a chill pill and enjoy the ride.
I could not find a consolidated thread with all wishlists... so starting a new one.
Wish-1: wifi dongle
A sleek one. Just like the GPS dongle, that can be locked with the tablet. Should support 5GHz 802.11n.
Must allow for a passthrough 40 pin connector to allow charging even when dongle is connected.
Must be under $40-50 range
Preferably in the same gray and champange gold colors.
Wish-2: nvFlash
Obvious reasons. To be provided for folks with unlocked primes.
Wish-3: Support drivers for external USB wifi dongles
so that the folks with dock can plug something in the USB, to increase wifi range
Wish-4: Diagnostics utility
A utility that keeps log of app/system crashes. Just like how other operating systems have them. The utility should send all crash results to ASUS for diagnosis.
Wish-5: system stability and performance enhancements
- improve i/o performance of internal memory
- fix issues with screen flashing and tearing
- optimal memory and background process management
Wish-6: disclose full pin map for the 40 pin connector
we have TF101, 201, 300, 700 all with same 40 pin connectors. Disclosing pin map, will facilitate third-party hardware manufacturers to create more hardware accessories for ASUS tablets. WIN-WIN for everyone.
Wish-7: Jelly Bean support
Latest and greatest!
Wish-8: 3G USB Dongle support
Obviously, should be baked into the stock ROM, so that no rooting is required.
Wish-9: Kernel 3+
XDA community: please refrain from using this thread for complaints. Only posts your wishlist for ASUS to read. Once every day, I will consolidate all new wishlists and make them available in original post.
Beta testers: Request you to please bring this thread to attention of ASUS folks
ASUS: Please grant wishes!
Edit June 22nd: Added wishes 7 & 8.
Edit June 24th: Added wish 9.
Well, the NVFlash is being worked on according to Gary Key.
I'll take some Jelly Bean 4.1 instead of this 4.0.3 Asus keeps hacking on. Hey it's a wishlist right?

i highly doubt this would happen to
if they do, then people can send ideas to places and have things made cheaper and no body would buy things from asus cause 80% of the stuff there are over priced....

I'd love WiFi USB support, or if a decent dongle is released I'd be very interested in that. Everything else on the list (minus the dock connector details) I imagine would be a given, but I guess you never know.
I really hope that Jelly Bean will be supported.

Apple products have so many accessories... it just adds more value to the product. More bang for the buck. reason why ppl buy apple so much is that in every store you go to is flooded with accessories for apple.
I think ASUS would sell so many more tablets if buyer knew he had so many options. Just my opinion and a wish!
I know this can't be implemented on our Primes, but maybe on the Infinity or even future batches of the Transformer Pad 300...Bluetooth module in the keyboard dock!
This way the keyboard dock could be used wirelessly if need be. Hook Prime to TV or PC monitor and sit back on the couch and type away.

Right... not possible in my opinion as well. I thought about support for bluetooth dongles on the dock, but that would not work once the dock is seperated from the tablet. I don't think there is enough electronics withing the dock itself that will let it communicate with the tablet via bluetooth when seperated.
Kernel 3+ and Android Jelly Bean
Dont know why the wifi wasnt added to the GPS dongle, would have made sense, would be something i use every day.
Support for drivers for USB dongles is just not practical. Every device functions slightly differently. Each needs its own drivers to function. What SHOULD be done is android should have some standard with how it would interact with these devices and the manufacturers of each device could make android drivers for their devices. Asking for asus to make every wifi usb device work just isnt going to happen. Check the aformentioned thread, it will explain how to make your own drivers for your device. Good luck!
Lots of apps are available on the market to check the statuses of apps. I used to use one a while ago that would track damn near everything. Apps crashing is 90% the developers fault (different from the ANRs)
IO errors are caused by bad memory managment and slow system memory, as well as unoptimized code. Asus IS working on it, as we see with the numerous updates. There is only so much that can be done in software as much of the problems are hardware related.
There IS a partial pinout available, we know which pins are for charging, which supply power for USB devices, the USB channels for both 2.0 and 3.0, and there are some propitiatory pins for things like the keyboard dock or gps dongle. For anyone who wants to make their own USB charge dock it wouldnt be that hard to find the information if you just look. (hint i made a thread about it)
Again, any USB devices you plug in will have basic driver support. Anything beyond that ask the manufacturer for an app to instal drivers or compatability with android devices or make your own. Its not up to microsoft to make your usb game controller work on windows, its up to the manufacturer of the game controller to make sure the drivers are available so their device works on windows. Same thing goes for android, dont have ASUS take the blame because some third party hardware isnt compatable, its not their fault.
Finally, considering how little customization Asus put into their updates when JellyBean is available you can bet we will be getting it very soon. Just relax, it will come.
I think its good to have an idea of what you want but its bad to say Asus should have to give us this stuff when its not their responsibility to do so, and much of this stuff is already provided for you if you only looked.

Lots of useful information in the post... (apart from the last sentence.. )
Well, I am an android end-user. I have no clue on how to write a device driver (if it's as easy as you make it seem, howcome all the smarter ppl here cribbing about poor wifi!). I can't even root my tablet!
My wish was that I did not have to learn coding, in order to make this device more usable. And this is entirely reasonable wish. I use my windows laptop with a ton of devices, and i have no clue on how the operating system or the drivers are coded. It just works! why not android?
I believe there should be some standard for wifi USB devices follow... my wish was that ASUS also bakes in support for this standard/protocol with the operating system. (How about just doing it for ASUS wifi dongle!).
I did read the unofficial pinout thread earlier... well it's unofficial, and most pins are still not known. I am only wishing that pinout be made public, so that smart folks like yourself can build hardware that can really make prime more useful.
Finally, please read the original post as a wishlist and not an obligation for ASUS. My intention is to consolidate wishes from everyone on their primes, so if you also have a wish, just mention it, and i will add it to OP. ;-)
beta testers: it seems like we have consolidated all wishlists for prime. Hence request you to bring this thread to ASUS attention.
Many thanks!

I have just one wish: A TABLET! not a BETA tablet!!!!

With webOS being open source Joe, does that mean we can use.in on our phones now?

This is an actual "Long Answer" as to why webos ported to android would be harder than thought , found this post on the 'WebOSnation.com' forums

A lot for the following depends on the device in question. If it's older and shares a LOT of components and the chipset as an existing webOS device, this will be far less painful. If it's a current device or something in the future, this is gonna get VERY costly and painful.
1. Time. Unless you aren't married and have no children, you probably don't have enough. Exceptions apply.
2. Money. To buy devices to test from, with knowledge you'll brick many along the way.
3. Intimate knowledge of the OS being ported.
4. Intimate knowledge of the various hardware architectures being ported to.
5. The know-how to port webOS to entirely new CPU/GPU chipsets as necessary.
6. Intimate knowledge of UX/Interaction Design to change interface metaphors if the target device(s) don't support it.
7. Hardware device driver development knowledge to support novel hardware components.
8. The ability to get spec sheets directly from the manufacturer (often from China) if they don't exist online.
9. The ability to execute on all of the above in a near-flawless manner.
10. Further time to ensure all of the above are updated as necessary.
A person that can do this as a career can make around $250,000-$350,000 a year if they can do it single-handedly, and I know of no-one who can in a vacuum. It takes an entire team with their own specializations working in tandem to do it unless you want the first release on the initial device target to fall somewhere in 2018.
