Menu button not working - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hoping someone can assist as its driving my crazy and searched for a solution without luck.
Running SG2 with custom rom, rooted, Siyah kernel etc. Its not ROM related i believe as the problem occurs on different ROM's.
One day phone menu button decided not to funciton. The backlit part works but jsut doesnt provide the menu etc. If i hold it down it respnods, the keyboard appears but not menu etc.
Only solution to date is to restore a prior Nandroid backup ive made using CWM but then within a few hours the menu button gives up again. This occured when i went from Leocheck ROM to Rarity. Even tried wipe ROM version to clear everything and used Titanium to restore everything but eventually menu button dies again.
Has anyone else experienced this, i cant figure it out?

Damn, guess im the only one lol.
From what ive read on forums it could be a conflict with the ROM I installed being 3.9 Rarity and some apk i may have installed although i havent installed anythnig new.
Others thing some kind of bad framework installed but even when i reflash with a nowipe and reinstall data only via Titanium or advanced restore via CWM, after a few hours the problem reappears.
Besdies getting a new phone lol im really at a loss :-(

Just an FYI if anyone ever has the same problem as me. Via chance i discovered the reason why my menu button would often not work, it was due to Ultrakeyboard v6.1.
Its a newer release and works fine however whilst its selected, it kills your menu button. Once you change input, the menu button becomes functional again.
So end of the day after flashing many stock roms, kernels, modems etc it was as simple as a keyboard lol

This thread helped me. Same thing happened to my fiancee's phone. Menu button didn't work. Even flashed a new rom and eventually same thing happened. So, looked on here, found this, disabled Ultra KB and it works. They need to get this fixed.

Guys,
I have the same problem but dont have ultra keyboard my menu button just doesnt work anymore

Have you tried button savoir from the market.this will determine if its something wrong with the soft buttons or your rom/system itself. phones with hardware buttons use it to stop them wearing out

Does your menu button do anything.what gave it away for me was that when I pressed the button, nothing happened but when I held it down the keyboard would pop up so it was atleast functioning, just not correctly.
Are you sure its not another duplication causing this.have you tried a fresh rom install without installing any additional apps?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

Yeah have tried multiple fresh roms. Flashed stock with ODIN then upgraded over WIFI. Nothing. I also did a key test in recovery and it wasnt working. It is intermittent. Tho today its barely worked. I have done factory resets etc. Nothing has helped

If it didn't even work in recovery then it sounds like a warranty job to me (of course after flashing back to stock).
In CWM my menu button worked so I knew it had to be app related. Hope you figure it out. Mine now decides to go into the sleep of death lol.

Vlingo sometimes opens after single-click of home button

Hey guys.
I've noticed that occasionally Vlingo/Voice control pops up after a single-click of the home button. This happens a couple of times a day.
I was wondering if this could be a hardware or software error. My guess is that it has to be a software error because it happens so rarely and the button itself has quite the travel (I just don't feel it being pressed twice).
My question is has this problem happened to anyone else before? It's kind of driving me crazy.
I'm on stock rooted (with insecure kernel) BOKE3 (Android 2.3.3).
Thank you!
I think it's hardware related. I noticed it in CWM Recovery. Sometimes when i pushed Home once, phone acted like I was pushing it twice.
I have my GS2 for 2 months. It happened to me only twice.
Thanks for the reply. I don't have CWM recovery installed and the couple of times I've been in the stock one I haven't noticed anything. I guess time will tell if it's a hardware or software bug when ICS is finally (officially) released for SGS2.
Happen to me in cwm a couple times too...
Now i use POWER button...just to be sure i dont mess up the Sg2
can somebody fix this problem? it is annoying when I want my phone back to homescreen but the vlingo comes out...
I have the same problem, and it's definetly a hardware issue. My home button have gotten progressively worse, it have now reached a point where it now double clicks several times a day.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
You know, I remembered that it all started when I had the "bright" idea to format the /cache from the stock recovery. I just formatted it to see if it will fix itself. Already the stock launcher's animations are back (I never realized they were gone), hopefully this fixed the problem, otherwise off it goes to Samsung for service.
This happens to me all the time and it drives me crazy... I hate that goddamned thing... `what would you like to do` how about shut the hell up.
I suppose if you root it can be uninstalled
i think i have the solution , will post a video on youtube in few hours.
I had same issue with LPB ICS, then i flashed again, wipe data, cache etc, even deleted battery log/stats, and now everything is perfect..
This is not HW issue afaik..
Same for me. It's especially annoying if you're sitting in a course and the media sound isn't muted.
For me it seems to be a hardware problem, too. Because after I had replaced my S2 it just happend once in 2 month. Before it happend several times a day.
LG WortPixel
I have the same problem too. I used CWM. I think this is software things.

How many times have you encountered it and have you disabled/use Rom without home button double click?

Factory reset did not do the trick, I still occationally get the damn Vlingo. Maybe I should try installing another factory firmware.
I'm really tempted to just send it in for service.

It won't help, I'm confident it's a hardware problem. The best you can do is to flash a rom without the double click feature.

Do you know if the stock ICS (leaked) roms come with Vlingo or a double-click feature in general?

Can't we just make a warranty claim? Or are they just going to come back with "could not reproduce problem" since it only occurs 2-3 times a day?
Edit: I've contacted Samsung and they've told me to update to the latest firmware. Lol.

Yup they do, and I had the same problem on the latest ICS leak. It also double clicked in CM7, but it's harder to notice there as it dont have Vlingo.
I guess you can make a warranty claim. I dont know your countries rules regarding this, but in Norway they must fix stuff like this even though the warranty dont apply/is expired.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
The phone's warranty runs until the end of September 2013.
I just installed another original rom and it already popped up Vlingo once, I'm going to test it some more and report back.
Edit: Same problem, it's definitely hardware related.

Galaxy S III Not responding

Hi everyone,
i don't know if someone already encountered this but sometimes my GS3 does not respond when i try to wake him up. (it's not turned off just standby). The screen stays black en nothing works. One time the screen did woke up but i couldn't unlock it because the touchscreen didnt work. It could not be turned off and the buttons didn't do anything! The only way for me to get out of this was a battery pull!
I did not root or modify anything on this phone because i like the stock samsung TW for the first time .
Did anyone else have this problem? And how did u solve this? Thank u.
Possibly due to an app you have installed.

Thank u i didn't thought of that. Is their an easy way to find out wich app this could cause? I still find it very weird. If an app is not compatible than it just shouldnt install intead of breakin the phone right? XD
This happened me last night as well. Couldn't do anything other than turn the phone off, and when it came back on it was fine again.
Unrooted as well. Would like to find out how I can prevent this from happening again?

Yes, if it happens again than i will try that. But i already sent the unit back from were i ordered it. They will send me a new one because its their policy to send a new one if something happens in 2 weeks.
So i will see if it still occurs with the new one otherwise its one of my apps. Than i will install only a few apps and see what causes it. If it doesnt occur one more thime than the unit was faulty. Ill keep u guys updated.

Did it happen once? My phone had it like 3 times so thats why i sent it back. But if it still occurs with my new phone than it must be one of the apps i got Luckily they got DOA policy. I asked if it includes ''the phone does not work as it should" and they said yes send it back u will get a new one yaay but now i have no phone
I had this. After a hard reset, multiple times, and configuring with no accounts (no samsaung account, no google, nothing), it still happened. I ended up returning the phone and I've not had a single problem since.
I think it was either faulty memory or a dodgy firmware flash (more likely). Either way, I didn't care to find out and now it's all good.

Touch screen not working, pen working????

Ok guys i have another question for the experts. Im dealing with this GS i717, the phone was rooted at some point since i found a touch recovery in it when i got it in my hands. Problem or issue is that i got it back to stock ATT and now touch screen is not working at all. Funny thing is that i noticed it wasnt working with the touch recovery but since that recovery looked so weird i thougth it was a matter of incompatibility since ive seen that before with touch recoveries. Anyway, the LCD doesnt look bad at all. In fact theres not even a minor scratch on the phone and or lcd(digitizer). But strange enough the digitizer responds perfectly to the pen. Im asking for help cus this does not look like a hardware issue. Seems to be a matter of configuration or something like that. Any advice??
Which recovery was on there? You may want to download a new ROM and see if you can flash that. And see what happens. Just a thought.
I would try pushing a ICS stock ROM via ODIN to try first.. if that failed, I'd try reverting to gingerbread then updating via kies personally. I'm no expert I promise but that just seems like the only logic I'd try.

to start i was running padawan flawlessly for almost 2 days when my touch screen failed on a reboot. the only thing that worked was the pen, it led me to this topic. i tried the firmware update, didn't work. spent a few hours looking for a better answer but when i didn't i decided to try again. after updating all 4 of the options the pen stopped working as well. i then installed the original 4.1.2 using Kies hoping to roll back the firmware/drivers or whatever stopped working. this didn't work either now I'm staring at that ridiculous AT&T Ready2Go screen and can not make anything happen with my phone. all 4 of my capacitive buttons register and get me the tactile feedback but do nothing else. i know i'm not that experienced, but this seems to be a software issue somewhere. before i trash the phone or have to pay for a replacement note is there anything else i can try?
If your not under warranty try taking it apart. Maybe you'll find something disconnected. You have nothing to lose.
If you do decide to take it apart, I found this link to be very helpful. (Warning! Autoplay)

This is a good suggestion because the screen is several layers (glass, digitizer, lcd, capacitive touch, and pen) with connectors for each one, and each layer is independent of the others. A good knocking could loosen a connector.
If that doesn't cure it, a new screen assembly is $160. I just bought one for my N7000 note.
well i've tried everything i could think of and everything i could find on this site. after opening my phone to make sure all connectors were in their proper place i flashed the original stock 2.3.6 OS, no working touch screen. upgraded back to padawan, still no working screen. has anybody ever heard of a way to flash the touch screen drivers, its my last idea other than getting rid of the headache and just waiting until my upgrade
From what you describe, it seems like you are dealing with a dead part. It's not like a PC where you can just install a driver to make the touch screen work.
If you don't want to spend any money to replace the screen, I would sell the phone as it is to recover any money that I can.

I just had this issue with a Note 4. This is what worked for me. Install Samsung Kies. Go to tools > update firmware. It's going to warn you about erasing everything. Just do it after you backup what you need. It'll download the latest lollipop firmware, boot into download mode, and then flash the firmware. When it reboots, you'll still have the screen issue. Dial *#2663# and update the firmwares. It should work now. Worked for me!
Exact same issue here as well. After rooting my phone and installing CM 12 on it all of a sudden my touchscreen calibration is waaaay off. Its more pronounced the further down the screen you go (ie I click in the 2/3 section top to bottom to click on the actual bottom) but with the s-pen everything is fine. I tried the code dial *#2663# but then I receive the prompt "connection problem or invalid mmi code". I am connected to the mobile network (Rogers in Canada) and mobile data is working without issue. I've tried completely wiping the phone again, all partitions and reformatting system, reflashing CM12 + gapps and still the issue persists. Google-fu isn't turning up with much either, please help!
Thanks!
*#2663* did the Trick! Thanks!

It's happened alot over past two weeks and it's now done it 3 times in past 2 1/2 days. Screen stays black press any button does nothing and hold down power still does nothing. Only way is to hold volume up and power for 3 vibrations then power back on its really annoying and must be due to some problem....?

Go to settings and disable auto brightness. I'm not sure why it works, but after researching for a while on this same issue, this is the setting that worked for me. Try it and update us if it works.

Did you guys update to 257 without wiping? I didn't wipe, but there might be some bugs sticking around from 532. Do a factory reset (full wipe if you have recovery) and see if that solves it.
any updates on this issue .the device screen simply doesnt wake-up from sleep ,unless you hard reboot .
i'm on 290 stock ,and testing the auto brightness disable method.
update : issue persists with auto-brightness disabled .
Hmm, it has to be a software bug. I can't see how this could be a hardware issue. Have you tried everything? Wiping? Re-flashing? Flashing a different ROM?

I have it just once though two days ago. Force reboot it by the button i almost gone mad when it's still not working, but somehow after a minute, it's normal again. I don't know why. But in case of yours, try to upgrade to the latest ROM first. That might fix it for you. No point for rooting if you can't fix the problem so let it go.

[Q] Messed up my phone

Hi fellow gadgeteers,
I have a problem. I have been flashing and reflashing roms on and off for a couple months. I typically do this when I find something about a particular rom that is too much of a pain to deal with (Ie. flashing screens, crazy battery loss, intermittent rebooting, locking up, etc.). Well, I think I have done something wrong and I am not sure how to fix it.
Recently I took and chance and upgraded to an unofficial KitKat rom for the Note. That rom eats battery on my phone like crazy. However, that wasn't the biggest issue I had. I can mamage battery loss. However, I constantly had to cope with the phone rebooting while involved in an online game. I tried many settings but could not stop the problem.
I restored the OS from a back up, but now I get a keyboard error which refers back to the KitKat rom versions keyboard.
Ok so, Here is my question.
Where can I find an Odin capable versions of the Phone OS so that I can completely wipe the device and start from scratch? I have tried sammobile however, their D/L system (rapidgator) is requiring me to wait for one hundred and twenty minutes for a capta response... (ain't noone got time for that)
Is the previous methond the best for what I am trying to do or does someone have a better suggestion?
I appreciate any help I get. Thank you very much.

What is the back up you restored?
In restoring your back up, did you do required wipes? Just as if flashing new rom? That wouold be super easy to overlook.
If you did wipes, you could force close your keyboard and clear that cache.
If you are still wishing to revert all the way back, you could always use Kies and the emergency restore.
