[Q] Messed up my phone - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hi fellow gadgeteers,
I have a problem. I have been flashing and reflashing roms on and off for a couple months. I typically do this when I find something about a particular rom that is too much of a pain to deal with (Ie. flashing screens, crazy battery loss, intermittent rebooting, locking up, etc.). Well, I think I have done something wrong and I am not sure how to fix it.
Recently I took and chance and upgraded to an unofficial KitKat rom for the Note. That rom eats battery on my phone like crazy. However, that wasn't the biggest issue I had. I can mamage battery loss. However, I constantly had to cope with the phone rebooting while involved in an online game. I tried many settings but could not stop the problem.
I restored the OS from a back up, but now I get a keyboard error which refers back to the KitKat rom versions keyboard.
Ok so, Here is my question.
Where can I find an Odin capable versions of the Phone OS so that I can completely wipe the device and start from scratch? I have tried sammobile however, their D/L system (rapidgator) is requiring me to wait for one hundred and twenty minutes for a capta response... (ain't noone got time for that)
Is the previous methond the best for what I am trying to do or does someone have a better suggestion?
I appreciate any help I get. Thank you very much.

What is the back up you restored?
In restoring your back up, did you do required wipes? Just as if flashing new rom? That wouold be super easy to overlook.
If you did wipes, you could force close your keyboard and clear that cache.
If you are still wishing to revert all the way back, you could always use Kies and the emergency restore.

I restored a backup from a couple weeks ago. I didn't restore on back up... Didn't even occur to me. I'll have to remember that. However, the back up works fine. I encounter the afore mentioned keyboard error after flashing to another rom after the restore
I believe you mean force close keyboard in app manage/ app control.. Yes?

Yes. Force close and clear the cache on it. When you need the keyboard next time it will fire right back up, hopefully without issue.

Random rebooting?

3 days ago my phone randomly rebooted while I was using the xda app. I really didnt think it was a big deal, I thought it might be the application and not nesisarly the phone its self that caused this.
Yesterday, my phone randomly rebooted again, but this time while I was listening to music. Now what really concerns me is that today my phone has already randomly rebooted twice in only about 8 hours of being on. I have a feeling that this problem is going to get progressively worse.
I am running stock + root and I removed all the att bloatware and some of the useless Samsung stuff using titanium backup.
Has anyone else had problems like this? Do you think I should exchange my phone for a new one?
Should I reflash stock + non root and see if it helps?
Thanks for the help.

Before even thinking of returning the phone why not simply fix the problem?
It's easy. All you need to do is to backup anything on the phone that
you think is important to you then go into CWM Recovery and select
"Wipe data/Factory Reset" and do a clean flash of whatever custom
or stock rom you are using now.
Your best bet would be to download and install the UnNamed v1.04 custom
rom since it's not only the best and nicest rom but it's also the most reliable
rom which is currently available for our phones.
Before you install or restore any apps, give yourself enough time so you can
tell for sure that there are no more random reboots or other issues.
If doing this resolves the issue, it means that you have install some app
which is not fully compatible to the phone or the app itself is faulty.
Good Luck!
I've been having the same issue but I'm 100% stock and also beginning to get worried :/
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
Personally what I'd do is get back to square 1. I'd follow Entropy's thread which I'll link below and get back to stock. I'd choose the non-rooted version myself just to be 100% safe. Use it for a couple days and see how it goes. If you've then isolated that the issue no longer exists, then you can go from there.
Basically establish if the phone is in fact faulty first, then proceed to see what is causing the issue. That's just my advice...
Return to Stock - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
I've had a couple random reboots....
Wasn't too big of an issue and I was planning on exchanging it sooner or later.
My boss was having the same problems. He exchanged his and its totally fine now.
You should be within your 30 days. Just have it exchanged at the same store you purchased it from.

I've experienced no such issues.
What kind of reboots are you getting soft or hard. Does it reboot all the way back to the slash screen or just the ROM boot animation. Boot anim. reboots can be caused by apps or problems with the ROM, but hard reboots that take you all the way back to the Samsung splash screen are possibly kernel or hardware issues. Or bad oc/uv settings.

It would be a hard reboot, it takes me back to the Samsung screen. I am neither overclocked or underv volted so that's not what's causing it.

I had the same issue once but it turned out to be some of the apps that were moved to my external sd. If you have a sd inserted check that first..

Menu button not working

Hoping someone can assist as its driving my crazy and searched for a solution without luck.
Running SG2 with custom rom, rooted, Siyah kernel etc. Its not ROM related i believe as the problem occurs on different ROM's.
One day phone menu button decided not to funciton. The backlit part works but jsut doesnt provide the menu etc. If i hold it down it respnods, the keyboard appears but not menu etc.
Only solution to date is to restore a prior Nandroid backup ive made using CWM but then within a few hours the menu button gives up again. This occured when i went from Leocheck ROM to Rarity. Even tried wipe ROM version to clear everything and used Titanium to restore everything but eventually menu button dies again.
Has anyone else experienced this, i cant figure it out?
Damn, guess im the only one lol.
From what ive read on forums it could be a conflict with the ROM I installed being 3.9 Rarity and some apk i may have installed although i havent installed anythnig new.
Others thing some kind of bad framework installed but even when i reflash with a nowipe and reinstall data only via Titanium or advanced restore via CWM, after a few hours the problem reappears.
Besdies getting a new phone lol im really at a loss :-(
Just an FYI if anyone ever has the same problem as me. Via chance i discovered the reason why my menu button would often not work, it was due to Ultrakeyboard v6.1.
Its a newer release and works fine however whilst its selected, it kills your menu button. Once you change input, the menu button becomes functional again.
So end of the day after flashing many stock roms, kernels, modems etc it was as simple as a keyboard lol
This thread helped me. Same thing happened to my fiancee's phone. Menu button didn't work. Even flashed a new rom and eventually same thing happened. So, looked on here, found this, disabled Ultra KB and it works. They need to get this fixed.
Guys,
I have the same problem but dont have ultra keyboard my menu button just doesnt work anymore

Does your menu button do anything.what gave it away for me was that when I pressed the button, nothing happened but when I held it down the keyboard would pop up so it was atleast functioning, just not correctly.
Are you sure its not another duplication causing this.have you tried a fresh rom install without installing any additional apps?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Yeah have tried multiple fresh roms. Flashed stock with ODIN then upgraded over WIFI. Nothing. I also did a key test in recovery and it wasnt working. It is intermittent. Tho today its barely worked. I have done factory resets etc. Nothing has helped

If it didn't even work in recovery then it sounds like a warranty job to me (of course after flashing back to stock).
In CWM my menu button worked so I knew it had to be app related. Hope you figure it out. Mine now decides to go into the sleep of death lol.

Vlingo sometimes opens after single-click of home button

Hey guys.
I've noticed that occasionally Vlingo/Voice control pops up after a single-click of the home button. This happens a couple of times a day.
I was wondering if this could be a hardware or software error. My guess is that it has to be a software error because it happens so rarely and the button itself has quite the travel (I just don't feel it being pressed twice).
My question is has this problem happened to anyone else before? It's kind of driving me crazy.
I'm on stock rooted (with insecure kernel) BOKE3 (Android 2.3.3).
Thank you!
I think it's hardware related. I noticed it in CWM Recovery. Sometimes when i pushed Home once, phone acted like I was pushing it twice.
I have my GS2 for 2 months. It happened to me only twice.
Thanks for the reply. I don't have CWM recovery installed and the couple of times I've been in the stock one I haven't noticed anything. I guess time will tell if it's a hardware or software bug when ICS is finally (officially) released for SGS2.
Happen to me in cwm a couple times too...
Now i use POWER button...just to be sure i dont mess up the Sg2
can somebody fix this problem? it is annoying when I want my phone back to homescreen but the vlingo comes out...
I have the same problem, and it's definetly a hardware issue. My home button have gotten progressively worse, it have now reached a point where it now double clicks several times a day.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
You know, I remembered that it all started when I had the "bright" idea to format the /cache from the stock recovery. I just formatted it to see if it will fix itself. Already the stock launcher's animations are back (I never realized they were gone), hopefully this fixed the problem, otherwise off it goes to Samsung for service.
This happens to me all the time and it drives me crazy... I hate that goddamned thing... `what would you like to do` how about shut the hell up.
I suppose if you root it can be uninstalled
i think i have the solution , will post a video on youtube in few hours.
I had same issue with LPB ICS, then i flashed again, wipe data, cache etc, even deleted battery log/stats, and now everything is perfect..
This is not HW issue afaik..
Same for me. It's especially annoying if you're sitting in a course and the media sound isn't muted.
For me it seems to be a hardware problem, too. Because after I had replaced my S2 it just happend once in 2 month. Before it happend several times a day.
LG WortPixel
I have the same problem too. I used CWM. I think this is software things.

Factory reset did not do the trick, I still occationally get the damn Vlingo. Maybe I should try installing another factory firmware.
I'm really tempted to just send it in for service.

It won't help, I'm confident it's a hardware problem. The best you can do is to flash a rom without the double click feature.

Do you know if the stock ICS (leaked) roms come with Vlingo or a double-click feature in general?

Can't we just make a warranty claim? Or are they just going to come back with "could not reproduce problem" since it only occurs 2-3 times a day?
Edit: I've contacted Samsung and they've told me to update to the latest firmware. Lol.

Yup they do, and I had the same problem on the latest ICS leak. It also double clicked in CM7, but it's harder to notice there as it dont have Vlingo.
I guess you can make a warranty claim. I dont know your countries rules regarding this, but in Norway they must fix stuff like this even though the warranty dont apply/is expired.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
The phone's warranty runs until the end of September 2013.
I just installed another original rom and it already popped up Vlingo once, I'm going to test it some more and report back.
Edit: Same problem, it's definitely hardware related.

[Q] More ICS Help Please...

My S2 has been turned into a gibbering wreck after I updated the firmware from GB 2.3.4 to ICS 4.0.3 using the standard Kies software. The firmware update looked successful but...
After the upgrade process the phone typically will only last 5 to 10 mins before randomly rebooting, the battery is fully exhausted from 100% after 2.5 hours (the battery also gets really hot) and generally the UI is highly unstable, i.e. prone to stuttering and freezing before then hanging or rebooting. In short, it's pretty much unusable.
My phone ran perfectly before the firmware 'upgrade', the UI was stable, the battery lasted approx 18+ hours with my useage and I virtually never suffered any random reboots. I had rooted it using the Zergrush exploit. I also have a 32GB card fitted and run Go Launcher EX (not Touchwiz), other than that the phone is fully stock. The phone is UK SIM free and unbranded (bought from P4U) using an UK Orange SIM.
Help what can I do? Is there a reset I can perform without loosing all my installed apps? Or am I going to have to do a full reset and re-install all my apps from scratch? Could it be something to do with the memory card, would a re-format of the micro-SD help?
I don't particularly want to do a full reset if I've then got to re-install all my apps (200+ Yeah, I'm an app junkie) but I get the feeling I won't have much choice as I can't leave the phone in its current state.
Thanks for reading. *sigh* I wish I'd just stuck with GB, if it ain't broke an' all that...
S.
Try a factory reset in the first instance.
If that doesn't help, you could either try a completely clean install of an ICS stock rom; check in this thread for unbranded UK & do a fresh install of your apps. Or you could do a fresh install of a GB stock rom; check that thread I linked you to in the first instance, if links are dead, search Samfirmware.com.
Re: your question about formatting your SD card, if you do either of the above, you may as well for good measure.
Edit to add - I don't have quite as many apps as you (~120) but whenever I install a completely new rom or a major version change (not nightlies), I always do a clean install. I find it's a few hours well spent.

Thanks for the reply Sorry to be a complete noob, but what would be the best method for a factory reset? Select the option from the relevant settings menu or key in *# code on the dialer? or doesn't it matter? I'm guessing the right code is either *2767*3855# or *2767*2878# would that be right?
Thanks again.

Boot into recovery is how I've always done it. From memory you can do it from the settings menu as well on stock (it's been a while/hazy memory only used stock for a week 6 mths ago).
Yeah, it's probably one of those codes (I don't remember which as I've never used the code, only seen them in posts on here).

No probs. Good luck Post in this thread if you have any dramas/let us know how you go.

Sorted...
All sorted! I can confirm that booting to recovery mode then performing a factory reset has cured my phone of all its symptoms, the gremlins have been banished, yay!
Big thanks to MistahBungle and all who helped... My UI is silky smooth again, my battery usage is back to normal if not a little better actually and greatest of all no more reboots every 5mins.
Although I didn't have to reinstall all my apps (approx 280 ish, sheesh ) since the phone automatically pulled them all back from Google Play (aka Market Place) it took an hour or so heh, I'm afraid all the apps have lost their settings so I am stuck with plugging all the settings in each time I start an app for the first time in ICS. Bit of a pain but could've been worse. Hmm, I've also got lots of bluetooth pairings to rebuild and wifi networks to re-aquire, oh well.
Next on the list...
I'll have to hunt down the easiest way to re-root too I have a need to re-install Orange's UMA client app, "Signalboost".
Thanks again to all.
S.
Good to hear. Glad you got it sorted

[Q] Help! A ton of sudden problems out of no where

Well, I was running rootbox for i717 and everything was working fine for a month, Then suddenly out of no where for no reason at all my phone got super laggy, apps started crashing, and my sound stopped working, I mean completely not through the headset not through the speaker nothing!!! So my first thought was something was wrong with the rom, so I tried a factory data reset, I tried re-installing it, I tried 3 other roms, cynagenmod10, Jellybeer and xylon, Finally I did the farthest restore to my stock gingerbread rom, and still the problem priests, in fact its getting worse, I don't know what to do at this point I am completely out of ideas. Could this be a hardware issue? its the only conclusion I can come up with, but its still strange, because if it was just my speaker I would understand hardware issue, but my speaker, my earpiece, my headset, and Apps crashing, super Lag, I can barley even get my keyboard to pop-up then it dispersers. What is going on!!! Please help me oh great devs.
Well, assuming you did complete wipes and factory resets as you flashed each Rom, I'd say you eliminated software.
Did you leave the phone somewhere that let it overheat? Or used a non-OEM charger? Or overclocked it?

did you do the 3 wipe procedures when installing the firmware?
there is more than just 3 wipes you can do .....depending on a dirty flash or a clean install or a complete wipe and clean install...you also have android secure ...internal ....external
Sorry for the delayed response
Well, yes I did always do the 3 wipe method, I did the complete wipe as well, and I saw no need to talk to the rootbox dev, (whos name im terrified of mentioning on xda in fear of getting banned lol) because I tried other roms from other devs and the problem still persisted, then I went to the stock rom and still had the problem, then I unrooted the phone and did one last complete wipe, re-installed the stock gingerbread rom, and still had the issue, so finally i gave up and got in contact with the guy on ebay who sold me the phone, and luckily he was more then willing to give me a replacement, then I got the note2 and was (still am) busy trying to sell this one, so I really just forgot I had this post up until I logged in right now so that is why the long delay, Thanks for your help guys but in the end im still pretty sure it was a hardware issue, but since Its back in the hands of the seller and I have new one we will never know for sure
