Is it really worth removing or freezing the bloatware, or does it just make you "feel" good that you got rid of something you don't need? Is performance increased significantly? What did you remove?
I'm currently not rooted, but have been closing "running" apps that I don't require. Just wondering if there are truly any performance benefits to be taken advantage of. Thanks.
In general, bloatware has no effect unless it is running in the background.

This, although some bloatware apps ALWAYS run in the background even if you force stop them they come back. This can slow it down but I wouldn't say it is a significant performance boost. The big thing is to open up more space by removing things you don't care about.
Do we know which, if any, bloatware apps always run on the NT? I don't have it with me to check.

Always be very careful when removing programs. Especially anything with the word "google" in it. There can be interrelationships that when broken affect other processes.
Carrier IQ will slow down anything its on fairly significantly. But I doubt the Nook has that.

Seriously, you shouldn't be using a task killer at all except if there's a misbehaving app that won't stop on its own. This is linux, not Windows.
Let the phone manage its own memory. Many times using a task killer just makes things worse. There's plenty of reading material on why if you google for it, so I won't bother with long details.

If you really think memory management is an issue, there are two apps I consider safe to use. AutoStarts which can prevent certain apps from starting up on their own, and AutoKiller, which isn't really a task killer, despite the name, but a way to tweak Android's own internal memory management parameters.
In linux, free memory is wasted memory, you want those apps "running" in the background so that when you want to switch to them, they're pre-loaded. Most of them aren't doing anything anyways, they're just sitting there idle until you open them...

I am definitely a noob to the whole rooting and flashing or whatever.
I had a one question that i hope someone can answer.
1) So i know the phone comes loaded with a bunch of bloatware from AT&T, and comes running all kinds of applications and processes that eats the battery, and i was wondering if there was a way to completely remove all of that stuff? I don't have the phone yet, but i think i want to keep the TouchWiz 4.0. (or what are your thoughts on TouchWiz?- should i keep or not)
I would like to have a clean install of Gingerbread with TouchWiz 4.0(maybe) minus all of the AT&T crap. Just a basic fresh "clean" install.
I don't think i want to run CM7 or some other ROM.. i think i just want to stick with the original stock android release since its my first android phone.
can someone give me some advice or lead me into the right direction with a thread link?

Root it get titanium backup from the market. It will let you freeze apps without removing them. They won't start up or be in your app drawer, but you can thaw them if you change your mind.

I understand. I do however know that i want to get rid of the AT&T bloatware and remove all those services that eat up battery.
To be honost the bloatware on the sgs2 isn't bad at all man. I've rooted mine and i'm still running the stock rom with entropy's kernel overclocked at 1.4ghz and undervolted -25mV. I'm getting 15-20hrs of batt. life with medium usage.
Also, half the bloatware can be uninstalled traditionally. For whatever reason they were nice enough to let us remove some of it which is good for people like you and I.
you will be pleasantly surprised with the battery life on this phone even with all the "bloatware" that is supposedly eating away at resources and battery, this is more hype than reality. And titanium backup is not the holy grail that some people say it is... And now Samsung let's you build folders where you can hide away those apps. Also check out launcher pro to completely hide them. What ever you do, give yourself some time with this phone before you do anything.
So far, I've only seen it done with faceniff and wifi kill. But when those apps are closed, the phone force hot boots. Anyone seen this or know of a fix?

yes. both apps do in fact require root. however on my other devices, i do not have an issue closing the apps.
I've had problems similar to this, you need to be careful with root apps because they can do weird things to your phone, maybe try a different rom and see if you still have the problem

I'm not familiar with faceniff and I've never used Wi-Fi kill so I don't know how much they push you're phone. Are you overclocking or undervolting? Maybe you're using one of flapp's performance settings? If it's always just those two apps and it does it every time, then maybe you should run a logcat to help diagnose the issue.

Both apps have run on other Android devices (most of which running gb) with out any hitches. I'm not OC or UV this rom. But it is a fair guess. I think I'll try an actual rom and see if i get the same results.

I have it bundled in CounterShrike 3.0, and available as a download for PAC-Man. In both cases, it's the background service only and not the app, but the effect is the same. I'm quite skeptical of performance tweaks, but so far, this one seems legit. It does not help general performance. It does help anything that uses entropy...app lauching, task switching (including return to home), many list based loads (Facebook newsfeed as one example), and so on.

Edit: I've seen zero battery impact. If anything, it may be a bit better, but that's totally subjective.

I've been running the flashable script version for a few days. It does appear to make a difference though I haven't done any hard testing.

Seems to make a slight difference only noticeable sometimes on inef dues. Antutu scores are the same. I think what I notice most is it being a little snappier between app switching. Hopefully it doesn't affect my battery life
I bought the app from the Play Store, but it deactivates itself every time the screen is turned off. Also, it's never prompted me for root access, so I'm quite skeptical that it's doing anything on my phone.

So, what about the article on the portal about these claims of improvement being false? Does anyone have any real proof either way about this or is it just a placebo? When really amazing devs not only say it works but also include it in their ROMs, it makes you think there's a little more to it. Just curious.
Quite a few reputable devs out there saying this does nothing at all that's it's all placebo.

They are both the same thing, you have the option of installing it as a script and let init.d start it or as an app..

K if I remember when I restore my nandroid i'll try it and see. I can see a difference but on faster/newer phones or AOSP Roms you more than likely won't see any. But after flashing that it's definitely different. Not sure if it's for the better or not since I can only tell with switching apps.
Edit: I feel like any tweaked rom is going to do the same. I just bought that app and it made literally no difference. Maybe the difference I was seeing was from the animations I flashed. Lol interesting. I also notice my ram is being used better without the tweaks.. What do the tweaks actually do?

I downloaded the xda version and installed the apk...I'm not sure exactly what it does or how it does it BUT right away I noticed that maps are loading much faster. We'll see how it goes.

I have compiled 82 system apps that I have frozen via titanium backup pro, I have risked a lot with my 600$ device and guinea pigged myself as a test subject ,for the greater cause .Of course I do have plenty nandroid backups if anything were to have gone wrong .As of now there are no know issues, force closes, etc....force closes are common when u freeze the wrong app, just for future reference !Also some force closes render the phone helpless unless you do a battery pull..in which the HTC one dorsnt have a battery to pull.
So as far as my compiled list is concerned it Is safe for everyone to use.
Everything works as should. You can choose to safely freeze whichever of the 82 apps/apks you prefer to. Feel free to add any apps you have also tested to be safe to freeze .
This greatly helps reduce lag , free up ram and and may even provide better battery life ,due to android os that sometimes has many system apps... that we don't know what they do exactly but many greatly affect our battery life because they unnecessarily run in the background and drain batter and the majority of them we never use .
This is the list freeze as many or as little as you desire to.
Every one check marked indicates it's safe to freeze .
NOTE: DO NOT DELETE/REMOVE ANY OF THESE APPS IN TITANIUM BACKUP UNLESS YOU POSITIVELY HAVE A NANDROID BACKUP IN cwm or twrp RECOVERY.I AM ONLY PROVIDING INFO ON "FREEZING APPS" "NOT DELETING".

Well, this list is very subjective. Alot of what you froze alot of people actually use. Like street view...document viewer...the remote app...among others. From looking at what you diabled it seems all you want to do is make calls and text lol.

Obviously I have takin the freezing to an extreme,it's called freezing as many apps as possible that DONT AFFECT SYSTEM FUNCTION IN A NEGATIVE MANOR.There are many I'm sure who don't use these apps and would find It fine to do so ....and only care about speeding up there device ...I have done no wrong ..infact if anything I've answered possible questions in the future on if them apps can be frozen ....maybe there are people who would want the most possible options .So it is up to whomever to pick and choose what they want to freeze from the list.All I have done was made It clear that if they want to take it to the extreme ,all these system apps and apks are safe to freeze with no issues .

i could have 2 tb of ram and id still disable stuff like everything tmobile put on there. that security thing and all the tmobile notifications are annoying as ****. also why do i need all the social networking apps running with access to my phone when i dont use them
