I understand that HTC will not warranty my phone if I do the HTC method to root. I was wondering how that effects me? My phone is covered for replacement even if I drop it in a pool. They charge me 100.00 and I get another phone. So should I worry about the HTC warranty even if I've been paying the 7 bucks a month since I bought the phone for the sprint insurance plan?
If you need to replace the phone or go to the sprint store for repair you can always unroot the phone....or if the phone had water or physical damage and you need to replace the phone with the insurance is better to tell them you lost the phone they still charge you the same price...

Htc will not warranty any "software" problems. Anything else though and they will still fix it.

If u do use their insurance, just claim it was lost or stolen. U pay the same $100, but u are never required to send in the phone, so they'll never know. And as a bonus, the new phone they send is almost always hboot 1.40. I've done it 2 times, both replacement phones were hboot 1.40

If you root through the HTCdev method, will HTC tell Sprint so they will void your warranty and not allow you to get it serviced at a Sprint Repair Center? I'm paying the $7 insurance from Sprint and don't want to root it like I did my Samsung Transform and have it bricked and not have the Repair Center do its thing.
Does Sprint cover accidentals? If so, you've got an easy solution. Overall, it will probably depend on the person you interact with at the Sprint store.
I know of someone who bricked their EVO 3d wouldn't power up or anything. He returned it to the Sprint store and they gave him a new one. Rooted HTCDEV way had insurance but had to pay like a hundred bucks for the new phone. So I dont think Sprint and HTC communicates with each other with this kind of problems.

I sent an e-mail to HTC and they said that they don't tell Sprint but Sprint can tell (yea right) if its rooted, but that it depends on the repair center.

Yeah, if its bricked you wouldn't be able to access anything on the phone even via PC. There's no way to tell. Just tell them you restarted your phone and it wouldn't boot. If I was the employee I wouldn't bother to argue. Its easier for them to just write it off.
If you unlock the bootloader is there a re lock? Reason I ask is because if my phone breaks I want to be able to return it in original shape to get a replacement if it breaks.

Yes but it says "relocked" on it so there really isn't a point.
So if I unlock it all warranty from tmo or htc is probably done huh?

Call HTC or T-Mobile to be sure. I wouldn't want to give you inaccurate information. My guess... they might still take it as a warranty exchange provided the damage wasn't due to tampering with the software.
When I unlocked mine, it said, " Unlocking MIGHT void your warranty". Whatever might means.

tough tmos warranty covered everything for $7 a month.. but not sure now that u mentioned ima read their insurance policy
I work for tmo warranty only covers defects or malfunctions physical damage is done through insurance which is 7.99 and you pay a deductible for 130 if it's physically broken and you return your broken device same if lost or stolen. There is an out of warranty fee for devices broken if you try replacing through the warranty when it doesn't cost anything, haven't seen anyone with unlocked bootloader though to know if you get charged upon inspection.

Lol, tmo covers physical damage. Riiight, in that case, ill just go ahead and cancel my insurance since it completely defeats the purpose if tmo is coverin it for me haha..

7.99 is called the PHP Bundle with Mobile security.
It is comprised of
Lifetime warrenty
Insurance (through asurion) protection against damage lost or stolen ($130 deductable)
Mobile security - register your phone online to track it when its lost via GPS or aGPS, make it ring when on silent or remote lock and wipe of the phone if its non retrievable
The main reason I pay for insurance is for the lifetime warrenty, at some point I will be offered an alternate exchange (upgrade ), that is how I ended up with the Amaze

Ha, yes unfortunately i've had to pay that $130 deductible quite a few times, goin all the way bak to my hd2. And already with my Amaze, but thats only cuz the damn cops have it in evidence like a frikin week after i got it, so i did an insurance claim, and then ill have 2 wen i finally get it bak. But the point that needs to be made lol so that no one makes a dumb decision bcuz of wat somebody posted earlier... Do not go and physically damage your phone with the thought that t-mobile is just gonna go and replace it for you lmao id like to be there wen someone walked in with a busted up amaze expecting to have it replaced ha

What are you going to do with the second one? Im pretty sure Asurion will charge you for finding the "lost one"
Correct. Tmo doesn't cover physical damage. The assurian warranty does. But is unlocking the bootloader and rooting it going to void everything? That would sink.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA App
It wont void anything with assurion, and its insurnance, not a warranty with them.
I unlocked and had an issue with the charging port, Tmobile covered the hardware defect without question

Well i have no clue wen the case will be over, atleast 2 - 3 months if not more. But i dnt kno if they will charge me or not bcuz my mom has done insurance claims where she still had the phone and it was just broken and never sent the broken one in and nothin happened. And another time she lost her phone, did insurance claim, then found her phone she lost and kept using it and kept the new one for a backup. And again, they never did anything.

I have purchased the Square Trade warranties for my last 4 phones and they have been great. They cover damages the full term but you have to go to Tmobile for the original warranty period for defective phones. SquareTrade figures most people upgrade every 2 years anyway so that is all they offer. I ended up capsizing my sailboat in the ocean several years ago. I sent the phone in and SquareTrade sent me a new one. I cracked the screen on my TouchPro2 and they replaced the phone. They tend to just replace phones rather than fixing them so it is a great deal and much cheaper than
Tmobile's plan except for the fact that they don't cover loss. they always have 30% off specials as well if you sign up so you can save even more. I am very happy with all my dealings with SquareTrade!

I'm curious to this but don't want to go off topic.
I've only had one situation where this was necessary and it wasn't a week. In the case that I dealt with it went to a detective for three days then the suspect had to pick it up from the evidence storage compound on the fifth day. This was for a major situation! Each city/county/state is different though.
Law enforcement don't usually like to take personal property unless it is absolutely necessary.
So I just purchased Amaze from eBay, now I need to decide if I should get warranty for it through squaretrade Normally I buy it, since phones with eBay don't come with warranty but this time they are quoting me me an outrageous $72 for 1 year, almost 1/5 the price I paid for phone
Build wise the phone looks pretty sturdy and is in mint condition, so wondering if I should get it? How is the general feedback about the phone...are there lot of RMAs
I know about the squeak issue with some phones, but luckily I don't have it and its also covered by HTC since back cover is an accessory so i'm eligible..
You still have HTC warranty. I bought phones from eBay and HTC honored the warranty.
If you have T-Mobile, you can call them and tell them you received the Amaze as a gift and you can add insurance, warranty or insurance + warranty.

As I said, HTC only provides warranty on accessories not the phone
I don't have T-mobile...but do you know how much will just the warranty normally cost through TMO?
EDIT: Just noticed, for rooting/custom ROMS I would have to unlock the bootloader through HTCdev tool, guess it would pretty much void any warranty ?
If it was me, then yep I would be purchasing a warranty, just in case as you just never know man.
Also of course, anytime you root your phone will void a warranty, but can always install the original GB 2.3.4 back on it and be good to go. Heck, I know people that forget to put it back and still are fine, but I would take it back to factory myself.
Good luck!

No. HTC does warranty the phone still.

HTC will honour hardware warranty - provided the damage wasn't the result of software overclocking - even after unlocking the device. Software issues you'd be on your own for with custom ROMs... but I'd assume they'll support you if you revert to stock.
I bought an Amaze off eBay back in January from who I thought was reputable on eBay. Used the phone for 3 1/2 weeks and T-Mobile shut my service off. Phone had a fraudulent IMEI. The guy I bought from refunded me after I shipped it back, but do yourself a quick favor before buying a ST warranty and other accessories. Call T-Mobile, tell them your IMEI and just make sure yours is clean. You'll feel better going forward buying accessories and stuff.

Thanks so much. They did let me add insurance for my "gift" phone (bought from cragslist). I think they can see I've been using the phone less than 14 days and didn't bother verifying whether it a used phone or not.

If that's insurance from T-mobile then I'd remove it right away. The reps are required to get a certain amount of sales per hour and even if you have insurance on your line, Assurion will not cover the phone for damage because the phone was not bought from T-mobile. I was a rep there and seen people get declined because of this same reason. I would call them up and downgrade to warranty only. It's what I use, because I know if I send in a damaged phone that it's still cheaper than sending a phone into Assurion for an insurance claim. The only thing the warranty won't cover is lost/stolen. If you do damage your phone you just don't tell the rep that it's damaged and you'll get a out of warranty fee on a later bill.

Yes. When a phone was used and is registered on another account. It'll show the warranty is invalid. If you say it was a gift and add warranty/insurance, they will honor it.

As a former rep, why would you even carry insurance through T-mobile? The warranty is $4 less per month and the OOW(out of warranty) fee is cheaper than doing a claim with Asurion. The highest I seen a OOW fee was $115 for the SGS2 and the Amaze was $105. Also, the OOW fee drops as time goes on, but the Asurion claim fee remains the same high price.

Put it under water or hit it with a hammer, I'm pretty sure one of those will do the trick, then pay $100 to get a new one.

Bricking your phone on purpose will not get you a new one from sprint. They will just turn you to insurance. And bricking your phone to get a new one from insurance is insurance fraud, and is illegal.
I was about to say, just do . . . nvm, beat me to it.
lol.

No, not insurance fraud, insurance is for if you break the phones screen or drop it in water, this is more like warranty fraud, in which case still isn't morally correct however, if your stuck with vmv you might just think about it.
PS: Bricking my phone on purpose did get me a phone from sprint . . . but not for $100, for $35 . . .

I honestly don't know, but I would think so. Their technicians (not all, though) have been known to check for this kind of stuff.
I know at one point they quit voiding it due to root, but unlocked bootloader is different than root.
Call your local store and ask, they may have more details.

You could always run over it, throw it in the toilet, or flat out loss it, heck you could have a friend steal it.
Warranty is different from insurance. I can't imagine TEP saying the insurance you pay for is invalid just because your HTC warranty is void.
But i, of course, could be wrong.
sent from my Evo LTE, usually.
The way I read the unlock warnings even unlocking doesn't totally negate the HTC warranty.
If you have a manufacturing flaw, sreen coming up, button issue, etc. Seems that would still be covered.
But if you hose it software wise they don't want any part of it.
Well HTC seems to be using it to negate the warranty. With "may" becoming "will" if you read around on the One X threads there are some lengthy threads about this . With HTC refusing to fix phones with big screen burn spots (obvious HW issue), then charging the customer ~300$ to flash to stock. Primarily a concern for international HTC customers who rely on HTC directly for warranty. Shouldn't be an issue with insurance. So I know this is a bit OT. My apologies for that.

I took my 3D to Sprint for repairs twice due to dead pixels. They swapped out the screen both times. I showed up rooted the first time, and the technician noticed I had ICS 3.6 on it and he said I neet to unroot for them to do repairs. That was easy. all I had to do was relock the bootloader and ruu back to stock. They dont care if it shows "relocked" or not as long as it was on a stock rom. From what I've read Sprints TEP is getting more expensive and the deductible is ridiculous. Not worth it if you do the math. However I still carry the insurance in case of bricking.
Thanks. I'm not worried about the price, the deductible might go up, but is still cheaper then buying a phone out right
