Trip Counter? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I'm planning to get the SGSII soon and doing the old root/custom rom thing. I've seen a lot of posts here whete people are concerned about trip counts. Why is this? Is AT&T somehow able to monitor this? What's the scoop gents?

it can void warranty?
A proper root/flash/install or a $1.25 jig clears that up.
My friend wants "adaway" but doesn't want to root his phone.
Can they tell if it's "rooted" if I do "rooted+stock" by entropy? (I have a jig)
He has instantaneous download speeds on his DATA/3g. I don't. ??? Whats up with that? Same phone, same place etc. etc. I don't wanna root his phone if that'll mess it up, he loves his stock, i understand him lol.

You can always root and flash modems to get better signal and speed. There's also zips that you can download to go back to stock for selling and w.e. if you rooted and wanted to go back to stock. Excuse me if I didn't help.

[Q] counter question

i have been looking around but i dont see anything to help. my problem is that i have a samsung att i777 or the galaxy s2, but i have recently flashed new roms and custom kernels an like certain things from all. unfortunatly i dont like any certain one . but the problem is that i tripped my counter and i dont know how to reset it. i have a jig and have tried multipul times, but still nothing. i have odined back to stock everything. just a minute ago i flashed the newest modem but still same prob. while in download mode it says factory mode on top. instead of odin mode. someone with some kind of expierence please can you give me a pointer?
Do you have the right jig
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I don't understand your problem... Are you trying to return your phone? It only matters if you are bringing it back to att. what it sounds like to me is li dint like any roms i want to go back to stock." To which id say you have it at stock let the counter stay.
But to answer your question... The sgs2 had tighter tolerances on the resistor used, meaning some old ones won't work. Idr what thread it was so use the search feature of the forum to find which jigs people have had good luck with, the info it's out there.

I made my jig with parts from radio shack. Worked for my captivate and works for my GSII
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
@pogmothoin17,
If your jig boots your phone into download mode, but the flash counter does not get reset, then somewhere along the line, you flash one of the leaked roms, 2.3.5 or 2.3.6, or you installed an I9100 rom that also installed a secondary bootloader. Since you say the flash counter reads Factory mode instead of Odin mode, I'm guessing you flashed one of the I777 leaks. If you install one of the leaks with the one-click Odin downloader, it will install a new secondary bootloader, that is programmed to not reset the flash counter. I don't know what the flash counter says in that case, but it could be factory mode. It would make sense. Anyway, if that is the case, you need to flash back to the original I777 UCKH7 secondary bootloader. Go here to get the file and instructions.
Well thank y'all for the feedback. No I wasntgonna return the phone I actually love it. Coming from a vibrant especially. I like some things for all the custom Roms and kernels. Just not enough to stay with one for the.moment. I am not in depth enough yet to try and make my own or.customize a.rom .....even though that is what o wanna start doing. The way I look at.it is I took it back to stock to see how this ota. 2.3.6 update was. When I go back to stock I like everything to be normal....as it was new. Its more just a pet peeve. Creepyandcrawlwy I was actually hoping you'd respond as I hear great things about you. I use xda quite a bit but just became a memebr thinking of would help if I had any questions as I advanced in my phone Modding abilities . Thanks again for all the help and ill try all this again.

Yea sure did before and after reflashing
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
It doesn't make sense then. If you flashed back to stock using Entropy's unbrick/return to stock package and a wipe, it should be totally stock, and wifi should work. Could it be a problem with the router?
I dunno I don't get it niether I got my wifi working but still have a count. And phone is not ota updating either. It keeps saying up to date bit I'm still running 2.3.4. My brother got his update.

Worried about encryption bug

Just realized i meant to post this here
Been using ics passion for a couple months now as a daily driver and havent had many issues, but i recently read about the ics encryptiom bug that basically randomly bricks phones for no reason so im thinking about switching away till its safe...
I just wanna be sure what roms have this bug?
Also whats ics passion based on?
So would it be all ics or just CM9? Nexus ports? Aosp? Gsii?
Thank you in advance
sent from the xda app on my android smartphone.
I encountered the deadly "Encryption Unsuccessful" bug while running doc masters ics rom v5. Now I don't know whether this is the case for all ics roms but just to be safe you should stay away from ics altogether. I was never able to fix my vibrant no matter what I did I couldn't bring it back to life...so you've been warned.
Of course things are much better now that I have a new Gnex with official ics 4.0.4
Very cool about the gnex... for the vibrant, have you tried unbrickable mod?? Maybe itll fix it

Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.
The Jtagging method is not any different than odin. I am able to flash anything through download mode. But not CWM which doesn't exist in my case. I have lost complete access to my internal flash memory...it is unable to mount because it is encrypted with a key in which i don't know. And i don't know how to decrypt it at this point.
The second method which is the hard mod method seems to be a little risky. I won't even bother trying that method since it is useless in my case. You see my phone is not "hard" bricked it is "soft" bricked. With that being said my phone turns on...boots up...i can enter download mode...access stock recovery not CWM...and access external sdcard through adb...thats it.
The only way to save my phone would be to create a temporary partition on my external sd card to act as its main memory. All that while being done through adb commands if even possible. So at this point my phone is complete paperweight until someone finds a solution.
I think this will eventually become a widespread problem sooner or later on all ICS roms. When the time comes somebody out there on these forums will eventually find a solution. Or at least i hope.
Thanks for the help guys i really appreciate it but my phone is bricked for now.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
from my understanding, both jtag and unbrickable mod start at the primary bootloader level and rewrite everything up from there, which i would assume includes sdcard too..
Are you sure youre not confusing jtag with jig??

My mistake. But i see that they charge $40 to fix your phone. There is no way I'm sending my phone to those guys. I have some personal data on my vibrant that I'll never let anybody get a hold of such as credit card info etc.
I am much happier now with my new Galaxy Nexus. I don't really care about my bricked vibrant that much anymore. But i still plan on fixing it in the near future when somebody comes up with a solution that is free of charge.

I sent mine to them for a broken USB port, I just wiped beforehand just in-case (even though I left a backup). If I can't fix something myself, it's better to pay a little for it, than to have to buy a new phone.

[Q] Avoiding/resetting the TMo flash counter?

Is there any way that maybe I've missed to either a) root the TMo GS3 without triggering the counter (I saw methods for AT&T and others) or b) reset the counter after triggering it? I've searched and searched without finding anything. Is there anything out there or would it be fairly simple to create something? I'm willing to get my hands dirty to create this if somebody is able to help me through he process.
Are the methods AT&T users use reproducible for us?
Bump
I'm looking for a way too. Havent rooted yet till I find a way. I have 30 days to try out Tmo through costco but I want to root so I can restore my apps+ data back via titanium.

Costco is the best! Great prices on phones too! There will be a way to reset it eventually. That is my GUESS.
Okay, I've found the process for creating the proper files so this can be done. It'll just be a specific Odin file, slightly tweaked from a stock Odin file.
I've never tried this before although it seems to be fairly standard with Galaxy devices. I don't believe ANYBODY has ever tried this on a T999 before.
I'm thinking I'll have something to test with this weekend. Anybody interested in helping me to test this? If you do, you do so knowing that this may
1) trigger your counter anyways, and
2) brick your phone into oblivion and make it blow up and kill your dog
If anybody's willing to take the plunge, I'll chime back in later to coordinate the testing. I need others to risk triggering their counter as I have 1 and only 1 device with the counter still at 0 and I want to personally see it successfully in action before I publicly release it. But if I miss something and trigger my counter, then I'll never be able to test it again until we find a way to reset the counter.
Thanks for taking the initiative. Hope you get successful results.

Anybody else interested in helping test? Remember, I'm probably going to brick your phone and make it turn into a Decepticon where it'll kill your goldfish. And more realistically, if I mess it up, it'll probably be a soft-brick that will require a stock Odin flash and/or it'll trigger your flash counter.
So I'm mostly finished creating the file for this but I'm stopping. mrRobinson beat me to it, and apparently did so last night!

[Q] Coming from Sprint S4 to Sprint Note 3, a few questions?

Hello Friends,
Just bought a N3, and a current owner of an S4. Hope you're well. Quick questions:
1. What is the best/recommended way of rooting the N3. I heard Kingo or something like that works, flawlessly?
2. So I heard KNOX counter is ONLY tripped if a CUSTOM Recovery is flashed. I assume on the N3, we still need something like TWRP or CWM to flash Custom ROM, is that correct? If so, which one do you guys recommend? How do you flash it (Odin or Flashable ZIP {Link please?})? And will it void my warranty or up the KNOX count? If so, what exactly do I lose that way?
3. Where can I find the names of the Releases and Firmwares released for the Sprint N3? And what is the latest?
4. What ROM would you recommend that's polished AND highly customizable? (For S4 users, I am looking for something like "Sacs" for N3?
5. I noticed that the Development section is nearly dead for the Note 3. Especially for Sprint. AT&T didn't even have a single ROM, if I remember. Only the T-Mobile forum had a wide selection of ROMs for the Note 3. Anyone know, why and do we expect that to change around here?
Thank you in advance for helping me!

ok.. So CF root is the best way using odin. . I also came from the galaxy s4 and really never gave thought to Knox it doesn't bother me and if you search you will get different answers about Knox from everyone, yes your warranty is now voided but if you can figure out how to reset your Knox to its original state and put back the original recovery and ROM yes you can get service from sprint in the sprint store. . But they will not service it with after market recovery and a themed ROM..I think the latest firmware is mj5 but What is available or what everyone is using I should say is mj4.. CHECK OUT JELLYBOMB ROM.. For the N3. . The development is slow in my opinion and only mine because the phone is new and the phone is pretty pricey for someone that wants to do an upgrade and not the 1 up thing. . And last but not least the developer didn't get there phones yet from there wives and girlfriend for x mas yet. So I think things will pick up in January. .

Gentlemen, thank you very much for your very informative responses! Especially Monty on the extended response. Some follow ups come to mind:
1. So I could careless about service from Sprint. I bought mine from Craigslist and don't use the phone on Sprint, anyway. However, it seems like there is NO way to reverse the Knox counter, which means that I cannot get service from Samsung... is that true? (In case the Motherboard is fried or whatever?)
2. As Android owners, roaming the XDA, no less, I am sure you guys are like me, that is, you itch till you drop, until the phone's rooted and a Custom Recovery is on-board (am I right !?). If Custom Recoveries are needed for essentials like Custom ROMs and Nandroids, how are you guys making do WITHOUT those? I know Root + TitaniumBackup to remove Bloat, and Xposed Wanam will hold us over a bit. But how are you guys getting NEW, STOCK Rooted versions and not making Nandroids, with the Stock recoveries?
3. Agreed, and hoping that development picks up for these, otherwise it would be a shame. Still surprised to see how many ROMs they had over at T-Mobile and even Verizon forums !! Can any of those themes and or Mods be used with the Sprints?
4. So are we unanimous, JellyBomb is the closest to being the most customized(able) ROM available for Sprint Note 3s? If so, what exactly is that ROM? Is it TouchWiz or AOSP :-/?
5. For my S4 friends... is there a modification app like 3minit settings available that we can use with Stock, Rooted ROMs to change the COLOR of the Settings toggles?
Thanks again for getting the ball rolling on my questions, guys. I know they are a lot, but trying to learn as fast as possible !
If your motherboard is fried Samsung won't be able to turn the phone to see if Knox has been tripped. Best way in my opinion is to take all updates to MJ4 if you haven't yet, then root with kingo, your know should stay at 0. Then use Wanam exposed to make the mods you want. If you really want to make major changes you can always push the needed files via adb. Granted this isn't a complete ROM but it will get you close. I have been running stock with several tweaks applied by wanam and web and get great speed stability and battery.
Just my 2 cents.

2. Can anyone help me get the 1x/3g mod on my phone?

4. To de-bloat, can someone point me to a list of APKs, safe to remove for the Sprint variant. I want to keep all the cool features in the camera like Golf, Beauty, and etc?

Installing a Recovery trips the counter, but I realized that us... here in the Sprint Note 3 world don't really have great Custom ROMs to choose from... so why do it anyway? Maybe if I had the T - Mobile version or even Verizon ! That of course you miss out on Nandroids. I hope someone proves me wrong soon.

Nope. It's just a misconception (not saying you..just overall) that rooting makes phones faster. It can, but not unless you really know what you're doing. That being said, if you do want a faster phone, a custom kernel is the way to go IMO. Yeah a custom rom can get rid of some bloat and unnecessary files, but I would stick with a close to stock rom, like Beans' stock rom, and flash a custom kernel like ktoonsez's kernel. You can find the rom HERE and the kernel HERE.
About the unified section, yes, you can use any rom from there as long as it's for the G900F and not the G900H (the exynos one). Also, not sure what you mean by "till everything get's figured out with knox". If you flash a custom rom or kernel, knox will trip and there's probably never going to be a way to stop that since t-mobile doesn't even care anyway.

I've jumped twice now from the Note 3 and S4 both with knox tripped. They didn't bother to check anything at the store and I haven't gotten billed for anything, so I don't think they care. There are other users on here with the same experience.

I agree .My buudy just took a s4 back that was pretty much bricked and knox was tripped and they didn't even check they gave him an s5 and counted all his payments from the s4 towards it . I guess they would rather get a knox tripped phone from ya rather than a phone with a cracked screen . I told my buddy if they don't take it then just run over it with your car and claim it on his handset protection . Also the sales people are not that know;edgable . Their soulution to fix any problem is a good old factory reset ..LOL
