[Q][Noob] Performance improvement, custom ROM etc. - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

I bought my first smartphone (Galaxy Ace) one week ago. I'm a perfectionist and want to get the maximum out of it. The phone is already rooted and cleaned from custom app autostart crap.
Quadrant score: 1000-1100
Saw Youtube Video of people getting 2000 or 2500(overclocked)
I want to get more performance and save battery in standby mode. So here are my questions:
#1 Is a custom ROM the right choice for that, does it increase performance? And which ROM?(CyanogenMod looks nice
#2 Can i easily restore the original android 2.3.3 version and how?
#3 Do i heave to calibrate the battery after update?
#4 Is there any other way to improve frames, cpu, data transfer rate and so on ..
Please don't tell me to use the search function, i read/viewed about 30 Tutorials and sticky threads. But even with detailed tutorials its still tricky, because I'm really new to this. I don't have any android/linux experience at all
Appreciate any help, Thx!

#1 -- Of course, you can use Jusada's ICS2 from here or Speed Blur (I personally prefer ICS2). It has been reported as the fastest ROM here in XDA ACE forums.
#2 -- You must install CWM from here and do a backup to your current system (by booting in recovery mode). There are several options as well.
#3 -- Yes, of course, can do it booting in recovery mode go to advanced and wipe batt stats... Or you can download an app called Battery Calibration it basically does the same.
#4 -- There are several kernels that improve the performance of your ROM by tweaking some stuff. ICS2 has some of it. You can OC in the CM options -> Performance. You can download SetCPU also. For graphics, try ChainFire from the market. Also you can give a try to some Scripts to improve RAM's management like the one I'm currently using: TurboBoost 8.5 which you can find a CWM flashable here.
After you are done, pls share with us HERE It is a must
Regards
PD. Hope this helps you!

Ya helped me a lot but i failed at first step.
CWM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18178563&postcount=13
I have no idea what to do with commands like "adb shell" or where they want me to enter them oO

Do you have the stock Recovery?

I dont have anything and no idea what stock recovery is
Told ya I have no experience, I'm glad I managed to root it by myself

I bet you have the stock recovery then. Download the file that you're suppose to flash, rename it to "update" and get into recovery mode to flash it. Get into recovermode by by holding the powerbutton and home when restarting.
4. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336240
Im using it right now and it really helped improving the performance of my phone. It's a lot smoother now.

You mean i have to install CWM like i rooted my phone? Just choose update from sdcard? Because the thread says something different.

The stock recovery is the recovery mode you have unless you replace it with a custom recovery like ClockWorkMod. You can enter recovery mode by: Turning off your phone. Then hold Power key + Home Key until the samsung logo opens.
You can flash CWM by:
1. Download CWM here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1168417 get the zip file. Save it in your sd card root. Not inside any folders.
2. get into your stock recovery.
3. install zip form sdcard. choose zip file. find the CWM zip file.
4. Select and Install.
Install TurboBoost V8.5 for fast, smooth performance. Through your custom recovery. Using the same method as installing the custom recovery above. ;D

Thx for all answers, i'll try all that in the next few days. jrxtepan do you have any instant messengers?
I'm interested in exactly your config

ADB is a vital part of Android development. In noob terms, it allows you to control your device by entering text commands. In developer language, it is a command line interface, that allows you to perform functions of the device using Linux commands.
If you have ever used Command Prompt on Windows, it's a bit like it. Try getting a virtual machine application on windows, put on a Linux distro, like Ubuntu or Mint, and mess around with the terminal emulator, to learn the commands. The commands are often logical and easy to learn.

Cwm4 & cwm5 r not same. Both r different. Latest roms needs cwm5.
Wipe system means format/system & wipe partitions means wipe cache partition & dalvik cache.

Both roms r gud. But ice cream sunday2 is d fastest rom on ace yet, whereas themyth is based on stock rom. If u want speed & performance, try ics2.
Yes, u can flash both roms on ddkq6.

I was wondering the same thing
Decided to take the "risk" to install a custom ROM: TheMyth ICS.
And yeah... it really improves the performance of your phone. Did a benchmark test and the phone is now listed waaay on top compared to before, when the SGA is normally listed in the middle.

hey i also wanted to know if my gps problem will be fixed in Themyth ics or in ics sunday... cn i fix it on stock rom...?? i want a cwm flashable fix not the root explorer one coz my phone is not rooted yet...

ok... i tried to install the myth ics but then my phone got into a bootloop..!! i wiped all the partition nd data before and after the installation but it aint booting..!! reverted back to stock rom..

Installing Custom Rom... A noob

Dear all,
I recently bought an LGP500 and im lovin it..!!!! Came across this forum and found that there are heaps of developments thats taking place in this platform! Really wanna thank each and everyone for their time and effort in trying to improvise on the OS.
I came across [UNOFFICIAL][ROM][stable:6.5.5,testing:6.6] CyanogenMod 7.1-RC1 (Android 2.3.4) and i really want to install it (or in that case, and good GB OS) over my froyo. I have been through a lot of threads on flashing and rooting, but im still very unclear about the whole process. Im not a computer geek, and all these jargon kinda make me feel like a bozo .
As a last resort, im trying out this thread. Would really appreciate if someone could spare some time and provide a simple walkthrough from - (a) backing up the original OS, (b) on through flashing and rooting, (c) to installing this custom ROM and (d) finally restoring it if needed for warranty purposes. Im pretty sure there are a lot of people like me who has difficulty in understanding all these processes and missing out some great developments.
I hope everyone understands this and wont consider this as one of those spam/duplicate threads, where the same Qs are repeated again and again...!
Thanks a lot for any support
Yes, the same Q's are repeated yet again. But I'm in a good mood today and I'll try not to give you much flak for it.
1. Root your phone, use z4root if android v2.2, use gingerbreak (both are apps) if on v2.2.1/2.2.2.
2. Install a custom recovery, of two kinds: AmonRa or ClockworkMod. Search for these threads.
3. Boot into recovery mode for backing up your current rom and installing a new one.
I hope this is a good summary. Before asking any further questions, check out the FAQ link in my signature.
Also read some stickies to enhance your knowledge. The_error has made a very good introduction thread on technical stuff.
In android, for using custom roms, first thing is to root. Then one has to install a recovery. Then make a nandroid backup from recovery. Then wipe everything from recovery and then flash your desired rom.
I suggest you do this:
1. Instal z4root app from market and Root your phone via it.
2. Install rom manager from market.
3. Install clockwork mod recovery via it.
Now you can go to recovery via rom manager or swith off and press and hold for about 15-30 seconds home+volume down+ power button.
Once you are in recovery, you are free to fly.
so which will be the most stable rom (no over clocking) for smooth usage, simple ui, internet and good video playback support. I herd there is problem with some roms not being able to play divx files.
I say rjtchn`s cm7 has the best battery I've had
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
I can't find either z4root or Gingerbreak in the market. Searching XDA Developers I see several versions of z4root floating around, but since my Optimus V is 2.2.1, I gather I should be using Gingerbreak anyway? Pointers to the correct APK appreciated. Otherwise if I should be going the ADB route, pointers to a thread that has working drivers for the O V linked would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
OK, to answer my own Question, latest version (that I have tested works) of Gingerbreak is at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
Now to figure out which kernel or rom to go with...

hey i am a noob and can't understand what to do with those softwares which are mentioned above, is there any step by step guide from starting to end??
any help would be highly appreciable
ok..i am a noob too.. so what all guys are saying is that, let me simplify:
There are basically 3 steps,
first, install a "gingerbreak" app, which is a apk (u can copy it ur mem.card and using file manager (its default in your stock android), u can install it from ur android after copying
secondly, install ROM Manager Free from Market and Install ClockworkMod Recovery from that app(dont fret about technical names..just do it), its easy as click and download
thirdly, download the Custom ROM like Mik's CM7 6.5.6 or something that pleases you and copy the necessary files posted in the Custom ROM'S page, all will be zip files...and restart the phone , By pressing vol.up+home+power button..u Will get to a different screen(that is recovery) , and make a nandroid backup as everyone says(all options are seen in the recovery) ...then clear cache..clean anything and everything..then install zip file from sd card...choose the Custom ROM and Restart (and lastly , forgot to tell you ,navigate by presssing volume keys and menu key as ok button)
..ok...maybe its not simple as it looks,,once you try..it will be easy as taking candy from a baby, thanks to all the guides and developers and all the ppl that supports it.
There are further step by step tutorials , if u search for it.. i was confused as hell too.. dont worry, U Will get the hang of it Noobz

you should really follow the instructions on the rom of your choice, but ill just give you the general scope of things:
1. root phone using one of the methods found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901247
2. after rooting, flash custom recovery:
http://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/221388-custom-recovery-optimus-one-p500-thunderg.html
3. download rom of your choice from the link in #1 and move it to the root of your sdcard (which is directory /sdcard)
(3.5 you can use titanium backup to backup your apps. the sdcard should stay untouched while you flash your phone but im pretty sure that your internal memory will be erased. i didnt do this and i lost all of my apps so i dont really know where this step should go but i think it belongs here. there should be a folder on your phone with those backed up apps. move that folder to your computer. i didnt do this so im not sure if this is how it goes, sorry. btw this is optional.)
4. boot into recovery (with your phone off, hold home+vol down+power)
5. make a nandroid backup
6. wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache (follow the instructions on the rom that you chose)
7. flash (your rom name).zip
8. reboot phone (might take a while, thats normal)
the following is if you backed up your apps earlier:
9. move the folder with your apps backed up back to your phone in the exact same directory it was
10. restore it with titanium backup
someone please confirm this.
thanx guys

Regarding bricking the phone, IT sure would, if you dont follow the instructions as mentioned! I almost bricked mine yesterday! Since there was a walk-through, i was able to revive it! So make sure you understand the whole process before rooting it

i hav been using da v1.4 for mny days nw.... no pblms.... all da freakout stuff was for the older versions.... v1.4 hf1 is as stable as u can get.....
no.. der are no oder devs happening for g5 other dan dis.....
Latest Changelog:
v1.4 - 23 September 2011:
Battery stats wipe?: You must wipe your battery stats in ClockworkMod for this release, since we are using a new kernel battery driver.
Data wipe?: A regular data-wipe is only necessary if you have problems (as usual).
Hotfix 1 [24 September 2011]: Fixed wifi tethering (reverted to v5 supplicant - should not reduce wireless quality as we are still using the newer WEXT driver); fixed stock FM radio; improved FM radio volume code (thanks to OuNao); improved FM audio quality (reduced hiss sound).
Updated CyanogenMod source.
Deodexed ROM: you can now install the full Google Apps package if you desire. Keep in mind that your first boot after upgrade/fresh install will be slower compared to previous versions, but regular boots will continue to be fast.
Patch to prevent S2E from applying bad filesystem tweaks (won't interfere if you don't use S2E).
Linked /cache/download -> /data/download by default (so all users can download large apps from Market, even if not using an app2sd method).
Kernel: Updated battery driver (based on tass_battery.c 2.6.35 kernel driver) - this should reduce battery drain and prevent the phone from staying stuck on 99% battery for extended periods. Note: your battery stats will be erratic for one or two charging cycles - make sure to wipe your battery stats to help this process.
Wireless: new driver with Wireless-N capability & better signal (based on Atheros source from Samsung I5508, with patches from 2.6.35 kernel).
Updated to wpa_supplicant v6 (awext -> wext driver) & reverted to CM7 dhcpcd. This restores wireless signals to Froyo levels.
Kernel: Updated fsa9280 USB switch driver (from 2.6.35 source).
Kernel: change default TCP congestion control method to "veno" - should improve wireless reliability, especially if there is wireless congestion in your area. It can also improve wireless throughput under normal wireless conditions.
Enabled hardware-accelerated 2D rendering (note: this feature wasn't working properly in the previous test hotfixes - it's working now, and there is no graphical corruption).
Various small bugfixes....
no battery drain pblms here...
hope i helped...
i use stock-like custom rom GB with no problem

if i have newest firmware and phone is rooted , can i just pick a rom and install it using same method i did for rooting, i have odin 4.38 now , dont understand what clockwork mod is, but will same method as rooting work or will it damage my phone ,i have kies installed , cheers.
ignore last post re-reading hubix's guide i know its the same process now , just confused me to start because of all the software listed at beginning, now all i need is a rom to use, are there any threads with images of the screen i found a few but none that really caught my eye as yet. also what does hubix mean by 'flash custom recovery' do i need to do this before a put a new rom on my phone, cheers, alyn.

Yeah you need cwm to flash any custom rom, on developers forum are CWM 5 and CWM 4 (cwm 5 is the recovery almost every developer is using to flash his roms now) (epic bad english sry XD)
right ive installed cwm 5 , but no idea what the following means to test cwm as i cant find any of the mentioned commands on the screen
Flash Custom Recovery:
1) Push recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxyace.img to your device using "adb push recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.3-galaxyace.img /tmp/" command
2) Turn off your phone
3) Press POWER+HOME BUTTON
4) Login to your device over "adb shell"
5) Mount /system using "mount /dev/block/stl12 /system" command
6) Flash CWM recovery using "flash_image recoveryonly /tmp/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.3-galaxyace.img" command
7) Umount /system using "umount /system" command
8) Reboot your device using "reboot recovery" command to test your new CWM recovery
9) Reboot your device
If you have already installed CWM, reboot your phone holding down the Power Button and Home Button until CWM Screen appear
If you do this and doenst show the CWM screen, with some commands, try re-install CWM, the right way now....
I cant see where you can have difficult in Tutorial... But if you still having doubts, just post again...

I'm on Vodafone in the UK and I've tried most of the ROMs and they have been fine. Unlocking just stops you using a non-Vodafone SIM. If you flash a custom ROM it will unlock itself.

try this one one noobs suggestion to other lolz http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298808
im gonna try to install the sgs revolved rom , if i dont like it how do i go about putting the original rom back in.
The best Custom ROM is CyanogenMod.
If you don't like it, then stick to stock 2.3.6..
Stock 2.3.6's battery life is IMPRESSIVE!
Back to the topic, root doesn't have any effects on performance!

[Q]Flashing several roms, nothing works.

Hi,
First of all, im a bit of a noob.
Second, i have rooted my phone, a SG2 GT-i9100 XWLPD.
And no matter what i do, it just wont succeed to install roms, every ones i tried, get stuck on boot screen. i have remembered to wipe.
Then i go to CWM, and install again, cause i read somewhere you maybe should do it twice. nothing.
Then i reverted to stock, that works.
Tried again, nothing.
I have tried
Thebyani_v4.3_ICS
Spike.pure.ics-v7.4
Villainrom 2.4.2
All to XWLPD.
What to do ?
Not sure what happens when you try those roms, but you can try the ICS Reseruction ROM which is the best ROM out there for SG2. Here is the link to the ROM page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854
You can install it using the following steps:
-Reboot into recovery (CWM)
-Wipe Data / Factory Reset
-Install the Main ROM
-In recovery go to Advanced
-Wipe Dalvik Cache
-Fix Permissions
-Wipe Cache Partition
-Reboot
-If at the first boot you can't do the configuration of the google account, skip this step and continue
-When you boot into the system, it's probably that you don't have data enabled (3g, H+) just reboot
-When you boot again into the system the data will be enable and you can do the configuration of Google Account (if you don't do this before)
-This is the moment for install all the extras like themes, fix's, kernels, etc.
Enjoy!!!
Thanks, ill try that..
I really wants a battery saver rom, if you know any better ones.
Edit: Didn't work, starts up, goes to samsung logo, with the triangle, goes to ICS siyahkernel, then it reboots to recovery mode (CWMR Touch v5.5.0.4)
Any advise?

Get used to work with Odin, that's all!
Just read, there are so many descriptions out there!
Second, if your phone was delivered with ics (lpd) do not attempt to flash a GB ROM (vr 2.4.2] since it will not work with an ics bootloader!
Some ROM's are not running as standalone, they are mostly offset roms based on cm9 examples are slim ics or Clean blank ROM, don't know whether the roms you named are like this.
So, all you need is Odin (or mobile Odin) and a ROM in .tar.md5 format.
I recommend litening rom 3.2 which is fully deodexed and close to stock.
Good luck!

Or you can try NEAT. It's stock and has gr8 battery.
I don't think it's the roms... u might do something wrong... follow the steps:
1. Reboot into recovery
2. Factory reset
3. Wipe cache, dalvik, battery stats
4. Install the rom
5. Reboot system
I always do that and never had a problem.
Good luck!

You're welcome
If you really want to save battery, go for phenomenal kernel extreme and use ki3 /ki4 modem, check my sig for bloatware which can be frozen.
Ps: if phenomenal extreme will end up in bootloop, use medium version, best approach, dl them both before flashing extreme

Just DL 5.5 Medium zip and extreme.zip, go to cwm and flash extreme, if boot stucks, wipe cache and dalvik, if its still not working, go to cwm again and flash medium.
if you DL them to the phone directly, rename it after dl cuz on the phone the name will be phenomenal5.zip in all cases!
If you use odin, dl the .tar files
Not too hard or?
Okay, ill do that, i will use odin.
Thanks again
Edit: It worked with Odin, now im on that kernel, thanks mate, im looking forward to see the battery improvement

Great, which one ? extreme ? If yes, lucky you!
For further Battery Improvements, use BBS and post a dump in the desired thread.
Please do not use any benchmarks, they will not give you the best results on this kernel, as long as the phone is smooth, everything is fine!
Yes, extreme one
What do you mean with "use BBS and post a dump in the desired thread." ?

[Q] Custom Rom Problems?

Hello all
I have searched all over but have not found any similar problems.
I rooted my phone and installed CWM and would like to install a custom rom that exists for Gingerbread 2.3.6 (I flashed back to stock OS), I have found the rom that I seem to like a lot (Atomic rom) however when I put the .zip file into my external sd and use rom manager to install the rom it turns off, then the phone boots back up... Any ideas about what is happening? Maybe I do not have everything rom manager needs?
I am definitely not ready to flash the new rom using odin, unless you put the .zip file into PDA section and hit "Start" when the phone is in download mode... from the forums I read it is not as easy as installing the stock OS
Thanks in advance!

you leave so many questions unanswered here. you have provided some information here, but not the vital info and the last part is very confusing.
im sorry, I know you are new here, but you lead me to ask some very generic questions....................
are you in the right forum for the right phone? this is for the Note1
I only ask this because I cant even find any GB ROMS for this phone. the Note 1 has been updated to official JB. I would and I am sure you would hate to flash wrong files to wrong phone and wind up with a BRICK.
I am not trying to make it sound as if you don't even know what phone you have, but you would not be the first to flash wrong and kill your phone.
may I suggest you read up in the "Super Everything Thread", which is in the General Forum. you will find exactly that, EVERYTHING, there. Odin is no big deal and super easy to use. also most don't even use CWM or ROM MANAGER anymore. TWRP is now the RECOVERY of choice and much more user friendly.
there are also many YOUTUBE tutorals that can walk you through. but first, lets make sure you are in the right place.
your phone is a ???????? NOTE 1
you carrier is ?????? att, tmo, ver, sprint
it is presently running ??????? GB, ICS, JB
good luck and let us know if we help

Sorry about that... I have the Samsung Galaxy Note i717 for AT&T and I am running Gingerbread 2.3.6
I thought that if a rom could run on GB it could run on any phone that has GB but your response has lead me to know that it also depends on what phone I'm running, so thanks!
I'll go and double check to see if the rom I tried to install was for the note... I guess I'm lucky I didn't brick my phone when I tried flashing the other 2 rome xD... Gonna count my blessings tonight lol

don't need to apologize to me for anything. the more information the better. not only are there so many phones out there, there are variations of those phones that have gotten people in trouble.
you have the North American version
International version
Korean version
different internals and wont all take same ROM. just be careful my friend.

I am looking into this rom, looks pretty interesting. Flashing the "AT&T fix" though, do I put that on my SD card also?
Update: For some reason I can not install rome
I am not sure what I am doing wrong because I have Rom manager do everything when I put the .zip file on my SD card and the phone restarts like normal, I even tried doing it manually in cwm recovery. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. And this rom I know for sure is meant for GB and the i717.
Any suggestions? Thanks again
You mean it's a gb rom meant for the i717 galaxy note....... I think you may be a little mixed up on what a rom is and what your actually doing...... Explain in detail what exact steps your doing when your flashing the rom so someone can help you.

I appreciate your patience
Step 1: I put the downloaded .zip rom (saurom) into my external sd card in a special folder I named Roms
Step 2: I fire up Rom manager and go to "Install ROM from SD Card"
Step 3: Go to folder containing the Saurom .zip file and select it
Step 4: Make sure "Backup Existing Rom" and "Wipe Data and Cache" are selected
Step 5: Hit "Reboot And Install"
The phone will then turn off and restart like normal, I check but the rom did not install. I honestly have no idea how I'm screwing up lol

You have to understand this as well, the ROMS do not install in conjunction or within the current Stock ROM. They replace them. So as stated above you have to make sure you have CWM or TWRP installed and boot directly to the custom recovery. Then wipe your data/system/cache/dalvik and after all of that install the ROM of choice.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525341
The very first thing listed in this topic is how to install Saurom. No where does it say to try and do it through ROM Manager.
Maybe that is where your hiccup is coming from?
No further instructions needed good luck and happy flashing

Alright so I forgot that I had to wipe the data/system / cache / dalvik
But even when I tried that just now and went into installing the .zip file it said that the installation failed, is it because cwm was removed when I wiped the device?

haha, only problem is that the rom hit an error anyways so I'm still lost at what I am doing wrong...
Another question, when I reset all of the settings and stuff before I flash the rom, wouldn't that get rid of titanium back up? then how would I restore my apps and data?
Yes you are right... But first stick your phone in the freezer for 2hrs...then microwave it for 3 mins... It will cause your recovery to reconstruct and see your internal storage enabling developer options to be on... Then hit the rom installer button.
