[Q] Lagging/Freeze while typing/sending text message - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, recently, i have encountered lagging/freezing while typing or sending a text, for example i were to compose a message, i can type it without lag, but when i clicked send, it freezes awhile and the message takes awhile to show up being sent, after that when i proceed to send another message right after sending, i experience lag while typing the texts, it freezes for awhile but i continue to type and it come back with all the letters coming in quickly. I have tried different message apps like Handcent, Go sms and the default app.
I am using Checkrom v4 and siyah 2.5.1 kernal by the way, has it got to do with them? I experienced this problem a little before flashing custom roms but after that the problem became more significant. I tried wiping and reflashing again its still the same.
While other usages on the phone i do not experience any lag, only applies to texting.
Help would be appreciated ! Thanks.

Has nothing to do with kernel nor rom. Check your background process, something is using your cpu a lot. Also try clearing the data and cache for messaging.

I checked and there are no running programs, i do have a lot of messages, how do i clear the cache? Means clearings all the messages? I would like to preserve the messages but without causing lag? Is there anyway to do so ? Others than backing up with apps. Thanks.

my way of removing the lag on messaging is to turn on force GPU rendering(settings>developer option then tick force GPU rendering for app) that's it you will not feel any lag on your text messaging anymore. hope that helps.

If you go to Settings - Applications
Choose All
Then scroll to messaging
It will tell you there how big your cache and data is for this app.
I believe if you clear data you will lose all your messages but not if you wipe the cache. It is advisable that a lot of messages will lag your message app as it needs to load everything

Messenger app...stay running?

hello,
I got an X10 one week ago, and today I had to reset the phone to factory settings after it would no longer receive incoming sms. Anyone ever have this issue? I hope it doesnt occur often.
Question I have is this:
I'm using Handcent SMS, and I also use advanced task killer to close applications running in the background that I dont need.
Whenever I close 'Messaging' app, which I assume is the program used for sms from factory, it just starts itself back up.. is it supposed to keep running?
I also use startup auditor to keep certain programs like face recognition from starting on boot, but currently dont have 'Messaging' disabled.
I think messaging needs to be there fire notifications to work properly. My messaging app runs everyone I get a message, things got weird when I froze it with tb.

Hmmm... I used to use Handcent SMS when the old Xperia sms application was full of bugs (couldn't compose multi-line messages, sms auto convert to mms after 300 words, the way it displayed message was like a weblog's shout-out box, making it hard to read).
When I was using that, I did not ignore the Xperia messaging app from task killer, and I fully disabled it from Startup Auditor.
That didn't affect my Handcent SMS at all.
I dont think killing it or blocking it would make a difference as neither the phone speeds up nor there is any effect on the battery usage by killing the messaging service.

Ummm... I think his main concern is worrying that his phone's sms sending/receiving capabilities would be screwed if he attempts to block it or something, not about affecting the battery life (._.")

Yes, correct... thus far, since the reset, it has been fine. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thx for the input, guys.

BAMF 1.6.3 Double Messages

I'm getting double text messages every time I receive a message. One in messages I can clear, the other one shows up in the notification bar but if I click on it nothing happens. Can anyone help me on this?
are you using handcent messaging app? i got this as well when i was using a third party messaging app. You have to turn the notifications in one of them off.
also this is a Q&A so when it gets transfered i will continue to monitor your question until i helped you solve it or provided as much help as i can.
No, just the stock Messaging app.

Disable notifications on the stock messaging app or freeze it. Problem solved.
Will I still get normal message notifications?
You won't get double notifications if you're just using the stock messaging app. You only get double notifications if you have GoSMS, Handcent, etc... without disabling notifications from the stock messaging app.
I am only using stock, I have never installed any other. AS far as disabling stock messagin notifications, I'm still getting a second notification and it will not go away when I open messages.
so are you rooted? what have you done so far with your phone?
did you format system partiton in clockwork recovery and wipe data and cache??
Rooted, installed bamf 1.6.3, overclocked. I originally installed 1.6.3, then a few other roms, always wiping data, cache, dalvik but then had parts of roms on top of each other so I did a fresh install of 1.6.3 to clean things up and wiped everything and now have double message issues.
I didn't format the system partition, I will try that
Tis whacked! Did you wipe/clear data before installing Das BAMF? Its almost as if you did a restore of an old messaging.apk or something, who knows. I'll let the experts take over as I'm at my wits end, especially if you say you have no 3rd party app. Maybe some notification app? :/
Have you tried rebooting? Try clearing the cache for the messaging application --- Menu --> Settings --> Applications --> Manage Applications --> All Tab --> Messages ---> Clear Data/Clear Cache and then Force Stop. (Obviously will lose all SMS/MMS stored this way).
I'm re wiping everything to see what happens this time.
Re wiping everything again fixed it, thanks all
ok, i am not sure how exactly to fix your problem without another wipe but i bet if you wiped your phone and sd card multiple times and make a fresh install of everything it would stop the problems. I would wait for a few more answers and then maybe popping into the bamf tweaks thread in the themes and apps forum to see if anyone knows about the problem.
It does sound like you have a few extra pieces overlaping again, i would really consider the nuking of your phone to set it back up correctly
dont have to wipe everything
i had same problem when i tried to freeze the stock messaging app. all you have to do is go to settings, applications, manage, all, then choose the messaging app and clear data, and cache. works perfect for me since then
Some one had the same prob few weeks ago and it was an app. Maybe beautiful widgets

Reboot?

I would backup sms/mms's. Then go into:
Settings->Manage Applications->Running->Messages and clear Data and Clear Cache. Then restore your mesages.

MMS freezing messaging apps?

Hey guys. Ive had my rezound working great since launch but I have just run into a very odd issue. Every time I receive a MMS, handcent and messaging both freeze up and become very unresponsive and I cant type a text if I manage to get into a thread. This is all fixed by a reboot but its annoying that I have to reboot every time I want to text after getting an MMS. Dont want to hard reset or I would have done that already. Anybody else have this issue?

I had that same issue with handcent at times, instead of rebooting just go into manage applications and clear data in handcent. That seems to fix it for me and doesn't take as long as a hard reboot.
yeah, handcent is full of bugs and problems. it's just gotten worse with each update, wouldn't surprise me if it were the cause. i like how handcent looks more so (because you can do non-bubble convos, and have their contact pic next to every single text), but for the most part, GO SMS is better. i never have that problem with go

[Q] text messages

Hello all, first off Im really happy with my white s3 apart from this annoying 1 next to my messages. I know it means I have 1 unread message but I dont.
Even if I delete all my messages its still there. When I restart phone it goes untill I get new message then it stays again. No voicemail no emails nothink! when I go in to task manager and clear memory the 1 goes untill a message comes through then it stays even tho the message has been read. Does anyone have this annoying issue/problem? I have looked on the fourm/threads but cant see anythink regarding this. Any help would be appreciated.
Try wipe data/cache on touchwiz and messaging application

[Q] Messaging App keeps crashing

I have looked at all the other threads and they didn't help me, my problem is that the stock messaging app crashes every time i start it, meaning, i cant do anything with messages. It started today when last night it was working. Im running stock rom, kernel, everything is unchanged, unrooted and using Nova launcher. The only thing i did today was Install BBS and disabled some useless Samsung apps like Joyn and such, but nothing mayor.
i tried clearing the data and force closing it, restarting, taking battery out, when i place the widget for messaging the app itself crashes, the widget stays and i see my threads, but when i open them, it crashes again...so honestly, i have no idea whats going on.
Thank you!!
!!EDIT: The messaging app doesnt crash anymore (no idea why it stopped crashing) but! I cannot send messages, it tells me always "message failed" also with other apps like GoSMS and HandSent, I cannot send messages. I tried going to /system/app and trying to install again the stock apks, but nothing, It tells me that Application Installation failed Rooted my phone just now, and still doesnt help.

what version of android are you using ? if it is based on samsung 4.2.1 leaked rom, you need to wipe data from CWM to use messaging app :good:
What happens if you go to call logs and swipe from right to left to send a message and then press the back button (should take you to the messages window)?

Im running 4.1.2. Aparently the messaging app works again now, I installed GoSMS and made it default. then i went back to the messaging app and it opens, but if i send a message it says "message failed" i retry, and then it crashes. However, with GoSMS, i sent an SMS to myself, and it seems to work.

I tried to doing that, I get to the message screen, but when replying it doesnt send the message, and crashes when I press "retry" however, with GoSMS it seems to work. Will ask other people today to send me an SMS and see, but an SMS to myself works with GoSMS but not with stock messaging
PS: THank you both for your replies.

believe it or not, somehow it works again...just on its own. I found on another forum and doing a Delvick cache clean up with Titanium backup would work! if anyone has a problem like this, that can be suggested. Other than that..I honestly dont know what just happened.
Thank you all for the help! I hope it doesnt come back again
