H icon instead of 3G (in cyanogenmod) - Optimus One, P500, V General

I have a Optimus One T (P509) with 3G data plan. While I was using the stock ROM, the notification bar showed a 3G icon most of the time (sometimes G or E if the connection was bad). After I flashed cyanogenmod, though, it only shows H. I checked the download speed - it was 370kbps.
It's not exactly a problem; I was just wondering why it happens. Doesn't cyanogenmod have an icon for 3G?

3G is UTMS and H is HSDPA.
HSPDA is faster than UTMS.

But while your phone is idle, the H icon is replaced by 3G,otherwise it will consume loads of battery in idle mode.

It actually depends on your operator and your area. Sometimes during idle they still use HSDPA, as maybe they dont have UTMS on that area(I noticed one operator does this when overseas).

Thuis is my experience:
3G icon when on 3g, H icon when also actually using data!

3g is the legacy circuit switching call. Speed limited to 384 kbps.. Hsdpa is "3.5G". Has higher speeds. This is packet switching.
Both use wcdma as the underlying technology.. Hope this answers your questions

I dont case about this

According to Cyanogenmod wiki page, HSPDA is the fastest mode and 3G is a bit slower than HSPDA. In stock ROM, always '3G' is shown irrespective of the real network. So even if you're browsing in HSPDA network, it will show as 3G. In Cyanogenmod, this has been changed.
Read here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/FAQ#Technical
Since you're always getting H, it means that your network speeds are great. Be happy

Possible to get Vibrant to display H instead of 3G?

I was wondering if there was something I could download, or something from the market that i could download that would make my phone say H instead of 3G? My vibrant is not rooted.
I'm wondering why... but there won't be an app to do that. The G E and 3G icons are held in drawables. So unless you make your own update.zip with replaces drawables, I don't that's going to happen.

Why do you want it to display that? The H is generally displayed when you're using HSPA/HSPA+. If you're connected t 3G it will say 3G. If you're connected to Edge, you'll get an E and if you're on the barebones cell network all you get is the number of bars you have.

I think he wants his phone to be like nexus one is, or other android phones are running custom roms, specifically cyanogen mod. With cm, it will jump from 3g to h icon quite often when data is used, does it to me in my area. I get hspa speeds here, but 3g is the only icon displayed. I like it this way more, the constant jump from 3g to hspa in notifications pane is annoying. Maybe he just wants people to see that his phone is on hspa and not 3g, because the icon doesn't change to that on stock rom.
I remember the first time my g1 said h... Had to call a buddy with a g1 and had to find an i*hone to make jealous...

Not true. I have a stock rom on my Vibrant and it does toggle between 3g and hybrid. It just depends on whether or not you have the new radios broadcasting in your area. Some markets have a lot of hybrid running, while many others have little to none. One of my best friends is an RF tech for T-Mo.

No ****, Einstein! It stands for HSDPA, but ask any switch tech and he will tell you its hybrid. Right now in many markets, it is a true hybrid mix of HSDPA and 3g and not explicitly one or the other. Do some research before you criticize someone, retard!

I downloaded the user manual to the vibrant (not the one that comes in the box) and it definitely says that there is a 'H' icon. I wonder why they don't have it displayed when actually connected to a HSDPA+ connection?
This is the text next to the 'H' Icons:
Displays when the 3G+ network connection is active.
Displays when your phone is communicating with the
3G+ network.
What does it mean when there's just a G?
3G means 3G

H means Hybrid/HSPA or whatever. I was out of town last weekend, and noticed that it was just a G.

HSPDA is able to provide faster speeds, but I believe it's highly dependent on how strong your signal is
Not sure myself, but if you're on Tmobile or ATT it pribably stands for HSDPA. 3G would mean WCDMA I believe.
Sent from my Vibrant using XDA App, Bionix-v 1.21
Long story short... it depends on how the ROM has been programmed to display what protocol your phone is using for data traffic.
3G just means regular UMTS 3G data
H means that it is is using HSPA, a faster protocol for UMTS 3G.
It doesn't mean that you're taking advantage of the faster speeds... that is dependent upon a slew of other factors.
Just to clear some things up. 3G is an all encompassing term, that INCLUDES the following technologies:
UMTS
HS(D/U)PA(+)
W-CDMA
EV-DO Rev 0/A/B
LTE
WiMax
As noted in the post immediately above me, the symbol it shows, depends on how the rom was customised to show each icon for the corresponding protocol.
If you don't believe me, that's cool, but go look at the ITU declinations on what is and is not 3g. There is no 4G CDMA technology. Pure CDMA is dead in the long run. All the current 3G GSM technologies, use the WCDMA or OFDMA air interface.

This is false. WiMax uses OFDM and LTE uses OFDMA (the same, but for multi-user as opposed to single). WiMax as 802.16e is NOT 4g. Neither is anything currently available and anything being deployed in the next 2-3 years.
I didn't say it was 4G. I said that OFDM was not 3G.
It isn't. Taking the broad view, its pretty clear to me that code div mult access is what differentiates 3G from its predecessors.
With 4G it will be orthogonal frequency
Here's a mathematical formula that pertains to all Vibrant ROMS that use an H and/or 3G
3G = H
The answer is, there is no difference except for the way they look. Both are really only using 3g.
The phone switches from hsdpa to umts back and forth all day according to how you use the internet. It automatically switches from hsdpa to umts when it is not browsing the web. That is-- if you live in an area with hsdpa. In which case it would stay on umts all day. Which would make your battery pretty happy. My battery hates hsdpa

This is false. Your phone jumps on the preferred network. Usually, unless you have specified, it sits on the fastest preferred network available. As such, battery consumption improves when you disable 3g (which is HSPA AND UMTS).

If it's not 3g then what is it? OFDM is used on both current 3g and future 4g (LTE-Advanced) systems.

hi there,
I believe what you say and if it is just a matter in which the ROM is programmed, why does my stupid S3 still switches from H+ to 3g?
I dont know and I cant tell if either of the two is faster than the other, but it is annyoing the constant switching
Thanks

H+ = HSPA+ = 3g. There are different names for the different 3g evolutions and technologies, but they are still 3g. It keeps hopping between the networks because you're unfortunately in an area with bad coverage for the faster network.

3g or H

Mine GS3 is always connected the mobile networks with H - it will flick up to H+ is that is available. While the phone is dormant should it drop down to 3G to save power?
It doesn't, so I'm trying to work out it there is something syncing in the back ground keeping the H connection alive or if Fast Dormancy should be turned off.
Thanks
I'm on T-Mobile (UK)
Idle (fast dormancy) is a HSPA tech and thus does not drop out of Hspa - at least according to the graph; in reality the connection is cut.

It just depends on your network & towers.
For years at home my Samsung phones (S1, S2 & now S3) have been on 3g when idle but over the last month it stays on H. This is due to a tower upgrade.
At a friends place it idles at H+ and at my parent's house it idles on 3g. So nothing to worry about.

I never get 3G signal (only H)

I noticed I never get a 3G icon while using data. I get an H, G or E, but never 3G.
After some research, looks like my phone should work (my carrier, TIM, uses 2100 Mhz), but I couldn't find exact info if my city has this frequency.
Anyway, is this a software phone fault, or SIM card fault, or carrier or the info I got is wrong?

3.5G wasn't HSPDA+, something that the XS doesn't have (I think)?

H is faster then 3G.
You might get the 3g icon if you go to villages rather then a big city. (though I don't see why it should bother)

meh it isn't a big deal, once you have H you never want 3G.
But it depends what data-speed your provider provides.
Well, when the data connection is idle, it shows the 3G icon. And when the transfer is active, it changes to H icon. If you notice, whenever there is H, the two arrows are lit up. As simple as that

I think it's a carrier thing.
On O2 IRL at home I either have H or E . When I was on holidays, with a local SIM card I had H, 3G and E .
On my way home I seem to get 3G connection. So it's probably a signal strength thing. In my town and in the city where I work, I either get H or E. And sometimes even G alone lol

T-Mobile + HTC One + 3G?

Hello, I recently switched over to Tmo from Big Red. I have mixed feelings about the switch. Overall I'm satisfied, however the signal strength near my house sucks!!! When I have LTE, it's great!!! My major/question is how is it 2013 and have no 3G? I go from 4G/LTE to 2G in about a mile. Does Tmo not support 3G?

Use the app Open Signal from here It will show you when your using 3G because even if when you are on 3G it shows 4G icon on tmobile because the 4G is the upgraded 3G
When you run the speed test it will tell you if you are on 2G, 3G, 3G/HSDPA (which is 4G), HSPA+ or might show as HSPAP which is the 42Mbits, and then 4G LTE

also you can put up a widget on your screen from Network Signal Info. I use it all the time. Great little widget that will show you your current connection type, signal and a whole lot more info.
What i use it for is to watch my UMTS connection and see if i am on HSDPA or + aka 15 or 21, then it also shows LTE when your connected to that..
If your in a spot where your not sure what connection you have this widget works wonders.
