Hi all,
First thread on here so Hello!!!! Basically, I've just rooted my HTC Desire (literally about 1 minute ago ) and i was wondering about what to do next? I know you can install more apps now but i was wondering what are the biggest benefits of rooting and how to get them.
I really want to install a different ROM onto my device but am stuck on where to start.

The first app that i install is the Rom manager app. It helps to flash roms and make backups of current rom. That solves one of ur questions.

Thank you does that make a backup of the current ROM so if something does go wrong then i can just restore it via clockworkmod?
Btw, when i tried backing up via clockwork mod it generates an error (sorry if this is noobish im new to this! )
It says:
Error whilst dumping boot image!
E: Cant mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Cant find MISC:
Any ideas?

yeah this happens quiet often when backing up the system....Boot into the Clockwork mod and then from there back up the system.

and ive just got cyanogenmod loaded on here now looks awesome! I have a feeling im gonna get addicted to installing roms now ... lol.
If i run into any more problems with rooting and custom roms, etc, then ill use this thread again so the forum doesn't get clogged up with my life story xD

Anytime......Yeah flashing roms kinda becomes addictive after some time....
lol, i can imagine errrrmm btw, i had backed up my apps using titanium backup, although i havent got any of my original apps on the phone now, and android market isnt installed either.

Which rom did u flash???? If it's a cm7 based rom then, yes u won't have market and other google apps. There should a file in that same thread called gapps. Get the latest one and flash it just the way u flash the rom.

I recently rooted my Hero GSM phone and tried to play around with some Custom Roms.. I'm currently running FroydVillain with a 691 kernel and I like it a lot, but want to know if there's any other Roms running smoother on the Hero packing Froyo..
I used to have the official eclair (2.1) with launcherpro installed, but wanted to try Froyo out because I heard that it runs 450 % faster than eclair. And since I went over to Custom Roms my batterytime has been lowered significantly..
Also if anyone could tell me what RADIO's are I would be very happy

Are you using latest Froyd, as we've got reports of 2 full days of battery life.
But 450% is an exaggeration, as it's based on a nexus 1 without vs. with JIT. You should get > 5 Mflops though in linpack using froyo.
Regarding the question in the title. You could search around here a little on Q&A since it has been asked a lot of times But mostly you'll get the answer that it's different from person to person and everyone has their favourite ROM for instance my favourite ROM is Cronos (anything) but I'm guessing pulser_g2's would be VillainROM (LOL)
Lol. Yeah it depends on what you want. I mentioned Froyd as you're on it already, but sense 2.1 roms do still exist, though you might try disappointed with performance.
I used a sense rom recently and had to remove it as I couldn't bear the slowness, even with oc.
But yeah, search is your friend. Decide what you want, and you'll find it here.

Yeah well, I spent almost an hour reading about different Roms here and there and I see that it's kinda up to one self what you like about the different Roms. I've been very happy with FroydVillain so far, but I guess I should go ahead and give some of the others a try.
I've just backed up my current phone settings with "Titanium Backup" but is this enough if I decide to try a new Rom and want to go back later on? or should I do a nandroid backup?
And again when I flash over the new recovery.img.. Do I need to backup anything beforehand?
My Froyd version is the latest and I've kept on updating whenever I saw new updates. And yeah, two days is in my opinion not much. Beforehand, on the official 2.1, I could easely tweak 4-5 days out of my standard Hero battery, but I guess this has something to do with the kernel?

If you want to go back you need a nandroid backup yes. If your talking about updating your recovery image (lol I'm guessing) no you don't. Just flash it. And the battery has something (everything ) to do with the kernel but if you want better battery set you min freq of your CPU lower or you can lower the max freq.

I reccomend you flashing Amon-RA. There is a guide in his thread on how to flash it But if you want the ultimate easy noob thing you can download ROM manager from the market which will alow you to download and flash a pretty descent recovery in one click
Yeah.. Flashing Amon-RA is what I'm trying to. It seems I have the 1.5.2 version installed and I just downloaded the 1.7.0 one..
The first time I flashed "Amon-RA" did it with the help of a program called FlashRec. I followed the guide on theunlockr.com and I now end up with a message: "Backup FAILED: Could not run command." when I try to "Backup Recovery Image" through that FlashRec program.
I have an idea of how to work around this but I'm not 100% sure this is what's needed..?
Could I run the phone into recovery mode (through that 1.5.2 Amon-RA thingy) and then flash the never version right onto it or is this the wrong procedure?

Lol thats excatly how I rooted my phone too (same recovery and website even) Look in the thread it's described how you flash the new recovery via ADB

Install
There are several ways to install a custom recovery, choose the one that suits you most (I probably forgot a few).
via adb -> Requires a custom recovery (with test-keys) like Cyanogen's v1.4 or my previous recovery
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
adb shell
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img

I fixed the steps underlined but after that I kinda went cold on what the **** to do :S
I boot into my recovery and what I get from his "guide" is that I my Hero should do something when I plug in the USB cable.. but nothing happends.. anyone who can put it down in baby-steps for me? :O
There's another way to do this it seems (2nd guide in his thread) but it seems to involve even more "code" so I guess I'll settle with this if it's possible.. :S

For you I would just recommend installing "ROM manager" from the market and then let it install ClockworkMod recovery that should do for you
EDIT: There seems to be an issue with ROM manager at the moment. It wont flash...
Yeah.. Might as well try this out since no one wants to point out on how to it the "geeky"-way

Ok, so I've tried to do my own research and have come up with very little. It took me about a year to figure out what rooting actually meant and did. So I rooted my SGS vibrant and flashed a bionix rom (i think). It says "bionix shut down sequence initiated" or something like that when I turn it off (any ideas on what it is or how I can find out). I really have no idea what version it is. I also would like to put a new rom on my phone but am scared ill screw it up. I watched a youtube video that told me how to do it the first time I flashed anything. It works with a few random screw ups but KILLS my battery. I would really like for someone who knows more than me to explain what a nandroid backup is and how to do one. What the clockwork rom manager can help me do. What the one click lag fix did. Why my computer won't read the storage things on the phone when connected to the phone anymore. What is this odin thing. What is a kernel. will I still get the ota updates without the stock rom. Where did my stock rom go when I pushed backup before I flashed this rom in the rom manager app. Did I actually wipe all the original data from the phone. Why can't I restore boot animation with one click lag fix(it says somethings not found... Did I wipe/delete it?). What is an apk and sdk(or skd)? What is a voodoo lag fix. How many times can you flash beer something goes wrong. I'm really new to ALL of this and have had no help really when I've asked a lot of people who apparently know more than I. ANY help from ANYONE who knows ANYTHING would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Theres a lot of questions in there so I'll just bite off a few at first. Before that, have you taken a look at the vibrant bible thread in the dev forum? It covers a lot of the basic ' how tos '.
Firstly, you can possibly see what version of bionix you are running by looking under settings - about phone - build number. now might be a good time for you to odin back to stock and start fresh. Odin is a program that runs on your pc and can safely install a rom on top of any lag fix you may have enabled. You can read about using odin to go back to stock in the vibrant bible thread I mentioned earlier. Once you go back to stock you can receive ota updates from tmo if that's what you want or you can reroot and flash another custom rom. If you choose to flash another rom I would recommend reading every post on that rom's thread so you can learn from other's experiences. I would also recommend you keep reading the bible thread, theres a ton of good info there.

That was really helpful, thank you and I will be looking into this more little by little. But I also have 2 very specific questions:
1. Is it possible to turn an htc windows phone into an android phone?
2. will I lose everything if I push the flash clockwork recovery in the rom manager app? I haven't done it yet but everything I've read has told me to do it the first time. I have the bionix rom running and don't remember flashing the clockwork recovery thing EVER. have I messed up or can I just do it whenever? And is it true thats how you make a nandroid backup because thats what I've read.

Depends on the phone, many do have android roms available. Just look up whatever windows phone you have in the forum section and if there has been some android development there will most likely be a section in the thread devoted just to android development.
You need to odin back and start from new

Hello, im new to androids and rooting, and i own a galaxy s2 which i have just rooted with Chainfires CF-root which also installed Clockwork mod recovery. I have a couple of questions on how to install custom roms, for example if i would like to flash villainrom, what are the exact steps i need to take? I have read as much as possible but im not sure if the same applies to custom roms in general.
So far im thinking i have to put the custom rom on my phones sd card and then flash it via clickwork mod, however i have read something about doing a nandroid backup and data wipe bdfore flashing the rom. Ideally i would hope somebody can do a quick step by step guide explaining the above, and tell me weather this applies to custom roms in general?

Once you have rooted your phone make sure you have enabled usb debugging.
Go to settings, applications, development, enable usb debugging.
Then connect phone to pc, and transfer rom.
Then boot into recovery mode, to do this switch phone off, then press vol up, home and power.
Then wipe data, wipe cache, go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache.
Then go to install zip from sd card, select zip, click ok and cwm will take care of the rest

Yes you will lose all data.
It's worth doing a backup, you can use titanium backup.
Download it from the market.
I don't tend to back things up, as contacts etc are synced and backed up with my google account.
And I just redownload my apps.
You'll find some roms don't wipe data, but it's generally advisable to always wipe before flashing any rom, and therefore backup if you have a lot of data.

Yeah pretty much the same for every rom.
It's always worth reading the first post in every thread though, as I came across a rom recently that could only be flashed using odin, I think it was litening rom.
But if not 99% of custom roms can be done the way I described
And I know what you mean about needing things step by step, these forums seem very complicated at first, the best advice I can give you is to read read read.
When I first joined earlier this month everything seemed so complicated but it's fairly straight forward when you get used to it.
I now flash about ten times a day, but I have a problem lol

Sorry for the delayed reply, lol jeez 10 times a day, i get how it can be so fun and addictive though, trying custom roms and themes etc.
As i said though im new to android, came from an iphone 4 which i always used to jailbreak.
And yeah i know what you mean, im doing my best to read as much as i can, but here on xda things move so fast and theres that many different things to learn it gets scary hehe.
Im still to try and flash a rom, i was going to try villainrom first, but do you have any other suggestions on which devs/roms i should check out, seeing as all this is new i might aswell get some practice in....
I do have another quick question, when i connect my fone via usb, which folder do i put the zip rom file into, is it External SD?

You said you sorted it, but the rom zip file just goes in the root of your internal memory.
It's not overly important as you can find the file through cwm anyway.
As sometimes I'll download a rom through my browser and then it goes to the downloads folder.
But if I download it on my pc, I will just transfer the file to the root of my internal memory on my phone.

Yeah thanks again i managed to get it sorted i guess i overthink things sometimes, but i followed your guide above and now im running villainrom
had to do a bit more reading/asking on the backup/restore front, knowing what the diff between nandroid/titanium is etc, and how and which to use to restore.
Also you mentioned above about backing up your contacts with google, i tried to do that but couldnt seem to, how did you manage it? as i cant restore contacts from my windows pc via kies right? now that im rooted with a custom rom.

And as i understood from that thread, the best way to backup all my data (like creating my custom rom right?) is with nandroid! But what is nandroid and how can i backup my data with it?

After root install custom recovery, reboot phone to it and choose backup, wait and its done.

BTW, prefer installing TWRP v1.0.3.13b recovery instead of the buggy CWM or old amonra

ok, my understanding is that in order to use nandroid backup, your phone has to be rooted first.
in the link you posted about rooting GB 2.3.3 ROM, it only mentioned using astro file manager to backup the apps. nowhere it mentioned nandroid backup.
if you are rooting a froyo(2.2/2.2.x) based phone, it is really quite simple. I do not think any kind of backup is needed at all.

Quite simple in fact, but what i wanted to know is, imagine i install a custom rom (btw, i know kernel improves the performance of your phone, so what does a custom rom does?) that i suddenly dont like, so i want to get back to my hold one. How can i backup my original rom?

OK, my suggestion is to use ROM manager from market. quite noob friendly.
it has backup/restore option right there. just follow the menu.

To use ROM Manager features you must inevitable flash CWM recovery and to do so you have two options, first beign flashing it via ROM Manager that can cause a bricked phone, or use recovery flashing how-to i posted earlier and install buggy and crappy CWM from there, thats why i recommend TWRP recovery

Ya, its not that it'll break phone but many features dont go well like zip signature verification which verifies that everything is correct in the zip and so the flash process will not cause a corrupted filesystem, mmm the amount of "No" confirmations are frankly ridiculous... some users reported flashing problems with the last version 5.0.2.0... Cannot repair SD Card, doesnt have touchscreen support and it cannot make selective backups which frankly s%x cause you wasted time and space... And also the fact tha maaany maaany users including me have bricked their phones flashing via ROM Manager... And also the fact that wiping cache & dalvik with CWM will cause conflict with a2sd script users...
Anyway @Palmaaa if you want to risk your phone flash via rom manager... if you want a crappy recovery flash CWM.... if you want the best and safest recovery then prefer TWRP v1.0.3.13b, your phone and your physical keys will say thank you

Never use ROM manager. It breaks the phone and it gets stuck at LG logo on boot. Many users have reported the issue. Use the recovery for flashing and taking backups.

it never happened to me. look at the rating on market, do you think all the users are morons?
yeah, you guys had some bad experiences and hated this thing with a passion, but get the fact straight. sometimes it may not be rom manager but something else that bricked your phone.
not trying to argue or anything. just present with another opinion.

sorry that you dont want to argue but, boy are you kidding me with that rating thing?? do you really think that every single person in market (and that rated that thing) has an Optimus One?? you are sooo naive....
In our phone p500 or optimus one, 01, OO, ROM Manager is very well known for bricking our devices....
Oh, and btw seems that you doesnt have a clue on how benefical is to have a properly working zip verification feature and also the plethora of other useful functions TWRP has..

Yeah, none of them are morons. For every other widget and live wallpaper app, the 'intelligent' users rate the app 1 star just because they cannot find it under the app drawer. So keeping in mind the 'intelligent' users on the market, I don't give a **** about the ratings.
It doesn't make a difference if you did not face issues. There are many people who have faced the issue and ONLY because of ROM manager. Just wanted to prevent another user from facing a similar issue and instead use the clean and safe method of custom recovery.
You tone showed that you're arguing. That last sentence doesn't make any sense.

Dude you are not helping.... encouraging users and specially new users to install something that has a high risk to screw and brick ur phone is not a way of helping them, if rom manager worked for you its fine, but maybe for another user it'll break his phone, ROM Manager is an unreliable app and method to use recoveries....... Ohh and btw user can install whatever he wants im just guiding and encouraging him to install the safest and most trustworthy and functional recovery of all, and is TWRP v1.0.3.13b

OK First and foremost i would like to say Thank You XDA Developers, you have helped me figure out ALOT about my phone.
First lets just say I'm a noobie at this (aren't all beginners?) and i did try the search function but couldn't find anything . if someone does find, please link me too it, it will be greatly appreciated.
OK now back to the problem, the thing im trying to do is install a custom ROM onto my HTC Raider LTE from rogers, i have rooted/unlocked/ installed CWM recovery on it and my phone is S-ON. this is where things get difficult for me, i don't know where to go from here, i have already downloaded DarkRaider_v1.5.0 and virtuous_inquisition-v4.0.2 just to see which one is better but i do not know what to do with these files. i have booted from recovery and installed from zip but i guess that's not right cuz i tried it three time and had to re-install the stock rogers ROM 3 times due to it Boot looping. Thanks in advance and sorry for any annoyance i may have caused
You did a full wipe/factory reset before install the ROM?
Anyways, post this thread in the device's forum, where will help you much better.
