I open a thread 3 days ago and I asked if the Prime is worth buying. Most of the people said to wait until it gets updates and the issue are fixed. As far as I saw in the last 3 days, a lot of updates and improvements have done by Asus, but because this forums is rapidly updating its hard to follow all the reviews. So, what was fixed? What issues still there?
And, I shouldnt have any issues with fixing the device, if needed, here in Israel. I talk to representative of Asus here, and as long as I have international warranty I can fix it.
Thank you.
Nothing was really fixed... GPS got swept under the carpet (forces you to automatically use wifi location and then pretends its just the GPS), touch is now responsive. The auto image quality (brightness/contrast/dynamic color) has been taken out leaving you with a poor contrast and washed out look.
Before this update the auto image quality would adjust brightness, contrast and colors according to each mode (power saving, balanced and normal). When it was in power saving mode it would have poor contrast and washed out colors, when in balanced mode or normal it would give sharp images with vivid colors.
Since the update you only get what was previously in the low power mode... Poor contrast and washed out colors no matter which mode your in.
Most user have just received their primes and may not notice the difference but if you compare it to any other android device, even your phone you will notice the washed out and poor contrast of the screen.

That's not true in my device after update.

Is there a thread about it that discusses this? With pictures and other details? Since the screen contrast and colors are what reviews praised, now you're saying they are gone?

For the most part, you will only see posts on here with people asking questions about things that are wrong or that they have a concerns about. This is not a representative sample of the general population by any means. Watch how fast a post that says "wow, my Prime is perfect" falls quickly off the first page - it's not a big discussion, there is not much to trouble shoot.
If you are at all concerned, then I would ask if you are able to return it if you don't like it? If so, then I would definitively go for it. The Prime is beautiful, its display is gorgeous. I was always confident Asus would fix the issues that have come up in the 2 short weeks since it's release (you can check my posts and see I've always said that), but lots are very very impatient. so much so they returned theirs to Asus to get fixed and are now sitting there with nothing while the rest of us sit here with updated Primes working just fine. I still think we'll go through some growing pains as Ice Cream Sandwich gets released and things get tweaked, but I expected that when I bought into the tablet.
No one can answer the question for you. I am not trying to say yes or no. You mentioned a warranty and I wondered about a return policy - thinking along those lines I think you are covered if you do get it and are not pleased or have any problems.

I totally agree, thats the "problem" with 95% of the online posts: People only post something when they're having a problem!
I dont know how it is in other countries, but from Amazon Germany you get a 30-day return policy with no questions asked (legally its only 2 weeks). This is more than enough to determine if you are happy with the device!

this is not true. Jzen is only partially correct. they did do away with the instant contrast and detail drop from before when switching to powersavings mode. BUT it is not now stuck in poor image quality mode. you can easily tell this by just looking icons. before the icons took a dramatic hit in loss of contrast or details. now it just looks like no matter what mode you in, you have a Normal looking screen. which is great. also saying that now cutting on super ips+ makes colors pop is not a fair comparison. before or after update super ips+ does this anyways because the increase in brightness is so dramatic.
if you want to read about the before update contrast drop in powersavings mode, go a few pages back and read the "Different Performance Modes of Prime/Tegra3" thread I created during first week or so of release. I was the first one to point out the difference.
but to clear up the rumour as others are not seeing the change also, It Is Not Stuck In Poor Quality Mode..lmfao. Jzen is funny.

This is all so true and kinda sad really. people always trying to find the negatives in things. I can see if it was true or something but its not. he was only partially correct and then twisted the whole thing..lmfao. lien you said anything good about Prime gets pushed to the bottom, all people interested in is any so called flaws or defaults. this will change though. as more n more people are noticing this and calling others out on pessimistic views all the time. plus he has no concrete proof of the accusation of being stuck in permanent poor quality. As the people in numbers have spoken, Display still looks great. and whatever they did seems to have increased battery life even more. super ips+ mode only meant to be used outdoors to overpower the sunlight glare on screen. anyone using that mode indoors must be blind..lmfao even regular brightness is too bright. regular brightness is brighter than any other tablet or phone out. then super ips+ brightness just takes off and leaves any other display in the dust in brightness

After reading all the negative posts made by a tiny few people, I registered just to set the record straight.
Prime is the best tablet out there, period. It can be tablet or laptop, has quad core power and so thin and light. You need to spend time with it to know how awesome it is. A very vocal minority of annoying people posting useless complaints and a lot of them are ignorant. Check out the polls and you will see majority of forum is totally in love with this.
Uneducated people using HC think this tablet should not stutter at all navigating UI. Guess what? HC is not optimized for quad core. ICS will be out soon and will fix this. This is first release people! Also firmware is coming down often from Asus to help. Also factory resetting easilly returns the Prime to responsiveness when needed. Asus deserves props for launching most powerful tablet at excellent price. This baby is 10 times better than iPad.
Browser is great too, but if its too sluggish for you just get Opera! We have choices people. Stock browser just gives you a taste of what is out there.
People complaining about GPS have started 3 threads on it. Is that really necessary? I come to XDA to find out new tricks and hacks for my TFP, not to read pages of complaints made by select few people. For majority of us GPS is not an issue. Google maps shows my position just fine. Anyone wanting 10" GPS for driving around should go get a real GPS. This is a TABLET. Even Asus Sweeden says GPS is just extra feature, not even a primary sensor. You should be happy it has EXTRA FEATURE, not complain about it! Truth is most people don't care about GPS anyway.
As for loose LCD screen, again first release. You knew there will be some minor issues so why complain about minor things. I am almost finished with my "Superglue Mod" which completely and easilly fixes this issue. I will post instructions after I figure out how to remove glue fingerprints from under screen.
Light bleed can only be seen in dark room, or during startup, but I believe my superglue mod will also fix screen bleed. Just have to figure out how to do it without glue fingerprints. For now I am recommend people just leave it alone and give factory glue more time to set. Also firmware may fix this.
Some peoples have said screen is too yellow. Its actually just color temperature they choose and is a design feature, and good personal preferance. Many people wear yellow glasses for driving or shooting to ENHANCE what they see. I for one am glad for some very slight yellow tint, because now display is enhanced.
WiFi is more than acceptable. Although not as good as my phone's but soon I expect other modders to come out with case hack which will make WiFi perfect. Might even help GPS.
Battery life is the best also.
Dead GPS isn't a useless complaint, but indeed a very valid one imho.
Not to mention it didnt start out as an "extra" feature, but was later made out to be, just to cover their asses.
And I don't know what polls you've been looking at, but the ones Ive seen were showing that the majority was less then satisfied.
And if you deem it acceptable for the first batch to pretty much fall apart, you are an idiot.
There is no excuse for piss poor QC, especially for devices of this price caliber.
You're already super gluing your screen, hope the 500 bucks was worth it?
Firmware doesnt fix hardware problems like screen bleeding either.
I agree, this is a great tablet. Some people wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they couldn't complain.
I have had no problems and the screen and battery exceed my expectations. Glad I bought it.

I think it's beneficial all that complaining - it's pushing ASUS to develop a GPS solution.
That's pressure that helps us all.
I think it could be done more sophisticatedly however - seems like a lot of pouting going on.
However, it's a minor issue and I agree with you 100% -
Awesome battery life!!
This is right on the money! Thanks for those comments....Now I just can't wait to get mine.
It's just very sad that as consumers we have to anticipate the minor errors for initial production units. You would assume the QC for these companies would identify issues, but I think there is so much demand on a product that the company would rather release a few under par units to be returned later than delay the release. Either way, my philosophy has always been that I don't "NEED" the product right away, so sit back and wait until I'm comfortable spending the money on that product and peruse and reviews so I know what to expect. Sometimes I even decided I didn't want the product after the reviews.
I'm glad to see your positive and realistic comments. I'm right on track with your post.

If Asus can revise the hardware in order to fix GPS and strengthen Wifi to be comparable to other tablets, and can improve their QC, and ICS lives up to what people expect of it, then I will deem the Transformer Prime the best current tablet. So a Transformer Prime with fixed GPS, improved Wifi, no QC issues, and ICS is what I would call the best current tablet. It needs this confluence of improvements to be deemed "best". But I would not call it the best in its current state.
As to the OP, that is probably one of the most idiotic posts I have seen in this forum so far.

I agree with you also. nothing wrong with voicing complaints and dislikes with the device. but do so in a more proper and constructive manner. pouting and telling people not to get the device because they had a bad experience isn't helping anyone. I think the biggest GPS thread is the only one trying to help figure out a solution. all others are just rants and overly exaggerated.

we need more posts and threads like these to overshadow the ones trying to make it seem like all primes are broken or faulty. some people here believe if your device is working properly, you must be lying, or don't know any better, or ignoring the issues, or even not running the trouble shooting tests correctly. those people that assume that have no clue and try to impose and influence their negative way of thinking on other members and new people coming on to the scene. very glad that more n more people realizing the real truth.
Like I said before, if I wouldn't listened to all the negative comments and let it influence me, I would've never got this tablet. Since 12/22, I've been note than satisfied with it and easily exceeded all my expectations. only slight issue is GPS. which I'm not pressed about anyways. that's why I never bothered to give it a real test yet. once the time comes, I will.
Always happy to hear when more n more people happy with device. It is truly the best out right now and I think some people hate that that's Fact

As a punter who has the prime on pre-order at two separate retailers in good old blighty, and who is looking forwards to delivery and appreciate the positive comments that you have made; I do wonder about the "superglue mod" as to be honest I will be returning mine for a new model if Asus bundle some superglue with mine!
When I have paid £500 for my toy I am afraid I do want it to be stuck together before I get it (I can remember how messy I was with airfix models 40 years ago ) and teh thought of a screen with superglued fingerprints on the inside of the screen makes me want to scream and also wonder what you have done for your warranty!!
Let's hope you have no major future problems with the little beast.

So if the Acer and Lenovo have these issues when they first come out, are you going to cut them the same amount of slack you're cutting Asus? Because what you're basically saying is that any initial issues don't count on new devices and when judging what's "best" people should ignore its faults and view it based on what it "can" be not what it "is."
Sorry, couldn't help myself. Saying "best ever" in your thread title and then spending 1/2 of your post talking about issues and attacking people that have them just seems paradoxical.
best tablet so far? yes
good enough for me to buy? not with a locked bootloader.
If Asus doesn't unlock it I won't get one, and I'll check out what other companies are showing off at CES.
I am having real problem to remove superglue thumbprint and dont think I will release that mod. Too much potential for mistake plus screen is now lose again. Think I am try to return it for replacement.

Welcome to the club. I returned 3. I don't care so much about screen bleed though, especially on the boot screen where it is most noticeable. I had stuck pixels and other weird issues.
I had two Primes with screen defects. I returned both and finally gave up on the TF201. I like the tablet overall; but lets get honest - someone over there in Taiwan is sleeping on the job when it comes to quality control. They need to be fired. It's absolutely unacceptable in this day and age for the same people to receive multiple defective units. Any my screen defects were not minor - they were pretty glaring.
Screen bleed is not even noticeable in everdsy use or during regular functions. it's only during bootup. if its minor, then that's normal. if its major bleeding, then exchange once again.
1st return due to dead pixels
2nd returning tomorrow due to 3 light bleeds
hope the 3rd one will be the one

all my apps have a bowl or dark background. And i mainly use it at night. So it is considered regular use for me. But this light bleeding is so bad you can see is in bright light on low brightness. I should if kept my first one. At least I could sort of tolerate it

Same here:
1 returned for lots of stuck pixels and backlight bleed
2 even more stuck pixels, less bleed
3 almost no stuck pixels (still some though) but the worse in backlight bleed and had a creaking screen
Tomorrow I will get my 4th unit, but I don't get my hopes to high up
* I know IPS screens cannot be without some light bleeding completely, but my specimens all had these nasty large "bulbs" which can even been seen on lighter backgrounds.
Returned my second prime today. Light bleed and off center screen. Bestbuy had one other there.but it was onhold!! Grr.. Want my tablet back.

No wonder people are struggling to get a TP, all you guys are returning them for minor issues.....don't like screen bleed? Turn the light on when using it..there problem solved.
Asus would've done fine with sales if people weren't so anal about minor things like screen bleed or not being able to use GPS in their concrete and lead lined houses. Well done you guys
they should have made a white bootup screen. Then no one would have noticed it...
I dont have my prime yet but i guess its the same as with my phone? For the bootup screen brightness is set to 100%?

Yes it looks like the boot screen is set to 100%. Mine looks very poor too. Once passed the boot screen no complaints
I've had screen bleed on two Primes that was noticeable on ANY dark background and detracted from the enjoyment of using the device. I also had one where the light bleed was not noticeable on any (normal) screen, and I would have kept that one had it not had other problems (non-functional haptic feedback, a rattle near one of the dock connectors that got worse over time).
My wife's Galaxy Tab 10.1 has zero light bleed. My original Transformer had tons of light bleed that was only visible when booting; I never noticed it otherwise during 8 months of use.
Light bleed is something that I think it highly subjective as to whether or not it's a problem. Nobody can say one way or another whether it's a problem for a given person and/or with a given device. Returning a device because it has an issue like this, therefore, is entirely appropriate and it's ridiculous to assert otherwise. Keeping a device with light bleed can also be entirely appropriate.
People have different standards for their devices. And nobody should feel like returning a device somehow deprives another consumer. It's up to the company to make enough of something, not for every potential purchaser to bite the bullet so some stranger can move up in the line.
If you are looking for perfection in something, I think you'll be highly disappointed.
Mine has some bleed but I don't even notice it once ICS is up and running.
I completely disagree. If you spend your hard earned money on something it should be free from defects. I havent complained about the gps at all. I personally do not care. The people that do care however I leave alone because gps is stated on the box. It doesnt say sometimes working gps it says gps. As for screen bleed and dead pixels....are you kidding me?? Do I agree with the hundreds of threads on the issues? No. But I do believe your product should work as advertised. Guess what, Asus isnt doing charity work here. Ever heard of cost of doing business? I run a 3 million dollar a year high end tile and stone store and i replace material for what sometimes seems like nothing to me but then I remeber..oh yeah these people that are spending 4-6k on their bathrooms are WRITING my paycheck....If something has a minor chip or scratch..guess what? Its replaced. No questions asked. This is the reason my company has gone from 24 stores to 62 store in the last 5 years. Im not talking 800sf gamestops either.. im talking 25000sf 3+ million to open showrooms. So if you are a manufacture like us sometimes you need to SUCK IT UP and do the right thing. No matter how insignificant it may seem to you these people work hard for their money just like I do. If Asus was non profit maybe I would feel different but they arent. They are in it to win it and are competing with the big boys in town and need to get their act together!!!!

Good for posting this, it will let others know just how bad it really is.
My first prime from Gamestop has screen bleed and horrible performance, i sold it and got another from Office Depot which so far has been perfect (besides the gps, wifi and bluetooth defects we all have).
I was going to try and sell my second prime and be done with Asus all together but nobody around here will buy it lol, so I decided to just hang on to it.
A device like this should come with no defects, and you shouldn't be expected to lay down and just take it in the rear.
On the seperate one tick whether or not you have it. Personally I can spot mine in normal usage at some auto brightness levels. I know that a lot of this will fall under personal opinion, but I would like to hear what people think.
This thread is pretty pointless. The severity is going to be everyone's opinion. There is no set way to measure it without comparing all the devices. And taking pictures of the device is a bad way to measure it because light bleed is amplified horrendously on a camera. Personally, I don't think the light bleed on my N10 is bad at ALL, possibly because I'm somewhat used to it due to my monitor having it.

Perhaps, but I would like to see how bad people think their light bleed is. Personally I have compared it to several other of my devices (galaxy tab 2 7.0, ipad 2, galaxy player 5.0) and none of them have it this bad.
If I stare at the bottom right corner, on a completely black screen, with max brightness, I can notice slight bleed. Looking at the same corner under any other conditions and I can't make out any bleed lol.

Idk, this makes we want to send mine back and try for another, but I don't want to do that and get a worse one back. I can see mine at 100 percent brightness and if I stare at it I can pretty easily see it under normal conditions. My friend couldn't see it for like 20 minutes though, so maybe I am just crazy. With that said he can spot it pretty easily now.

If it's going to be a concern in the long run, I might suggest just returning it.
Currently, I have a multi-touch issue with my screen that doesn't seem to like when I use more then 3 fingers at random times. Although the chances of me using more then 3 fingers is... extremely rare; it does sort of bother me a bit lol. But then again, aside from that, and the very minor bleed I have, everything else seems fine... hmm

Ha ha, almost seems like a best of the worst sort of thing. If it doesn't have one issue it has another. Also the cable they sent me doesn't charge the tablet, I have to use the one that came with my sgs3.
Good to see that the majority has none. Just ordered a new unit. We shall see how this turns out.
My option is not there. Only visible on the start up screen and only when the auto brightness adjusts. They could probably just fix mine by disabling auto brightness on boot up and there would be no way I can see it. Lol
For the people that said they don't have any:
When did you order and is this your first unit?
I'm not sure if mine really counts as light bleed. Since playing with it for a couple of hours I've only noticed two small spots on the very bottom about the width of my small finger. I need to have brightness set to about 60% and a completely dark background to really see it. During normal use with auto brightness on I don't notice it. Is it really possible to get zero light spots in all conditions with these screens?

That's still light bleed, but I can see mine all the time. It sounds minor.
So far not so good. 14 people don't have light bleed and 15 people do.
I ordered mine 5 minutes after they went on sale. No light bleed.
Well I called for an RMA. Before the csr put it through, I got assurance that should the replacement have worse problems that I could RMA the replacement and keep the original. My problem is a little annoying but I have no desire to go through 6 or more replacements to find that perfect device. Other than the dim strip this thing is flawless so I'd rather not risk warped backs, reboots, or a worse panel. Here's to hoping the one replacement is defect free.

You and me both lol, I really hope my replacement doesn't have worse light bleed.
Before returning your Nexus 10...
Call Google and speak to TECH SUPPORT AND NOT CUSTOMER SUPPORT!
I complained about light bleed in my first one, and later came to find out that the idiot in CS put down that I was returning it due to remorse, which means I'd have to pay the restocking fee. Tech will put your return reason as defective or DOA so you don't get charged the fee.
No light bleed on mine. I was surprised since my last two Android tablets (transformer and toshiba excite 10) both had some light bleed noticeable on the black boot screen.
Hi,
order Thursday 22 and Friday 23 received. I also have the problem of "light leakage" on the bottom right corner.
How is the replacement? Should your return the product for exchange or google you refer another product? and then send the product deffect .

Worth bearing in mind that the numbers are skewed somewhat toward people who are concerned about this topic, with a good chance that they have a light bleed problem -- these are generally the folks who will open this thread and vote in the poll. If you could be confident that all XDA readers in the N10 forum would vote, the percentage would be scarier. Not sure how meaningful the stats will really be that are collected in this thread.
So, I have been seeing many reviewers commenting potential display quality issues, mainly screen bleeding all the way around the screen and punch hole.
I know it can be considered as normal for IPS LCD screens, but many say it's really noticeable and can be annoying. Also, pretty low brightness is reported as under-average.
It seems, according to what I have seen and read, that display is downgrade from Redmi Note 8 Pro, which has pretty good display, no screen bleeding and decent brightness.
So, those who have Note 9 Pro (9S), have you experienced this issues, is it a general thing, or maybe it's just some batch in question.
I really would like to buy a phone, but I wont take a bellow average display as compromise.

Not confirmed from my side,no visible bleed around the camera hole. I was asking myself about this reported claim.
Display is good for me and can easily compete with my old MI9T.
I don't regret buying this phone.
I was hoping to hear that, because I've also saw people commenting that their units are free of any kind of screen issues.
But it seems some batch of phones is impacted by this issue.

Mine is perfect. Don't listen to Frankie from Frankie Tech on YouTube. He's full of $hit.
Mine is fine. Nothing noticeable. ??
Mine is two weeks old and absolutely fine. I have yet to notice light bleed (should I have, or would I need to look for it?) and there's no display retention issues.
I notice the faded color around the screen, im thinking on a return. But dont know if its normal, cause cant notice on some apps even at max brightness. Just got the phone on Sunday
Hi all!
Shown is an unfortunate issue I've had with the displays of two 1 IV's (US/512Gb models):
(just uploaded this as of posting so the higher res may still be encoding)
I use my phone frequently at night and the display is noticeably off/blown out/seemingly defective at lower brightnesses, especially in the evening. I've already been through the exchange process once for this problem and it took weeks, luckily I caught it in the return window. Now I'm deciding whether to try yet another exchange or just return the new one, because sadly this issue is a deal breaker for me.
Please let me know if you're experiencing the same issue so I can determine whether or not I want to gamble my time with another one of these, as I strongly suspect/fear this could be a widespread hardware defect that has gone relatively unnoticed. Either that, or I got two phones from a clearly bad batch.
Link to image shown in video if you'd like to see if yours has the issue.
You can see the problem best in scenes with very dark color gradients, mostly in the very black range. Most of the time it's not exactly easy to notice especially if you're not looking for it. The display looks flawless and brilliant at 90% and above, although interestingly "creative mode" also seems to degrade color quality. I had an Xperia 1 II before this and creative mode didn't have that perceived negative effect at all. In fact I had exactly 0 of these issues on my mark II.
60/120fps, HDR, etc all don't seem to change the issue, nor did a factory reset or the Xperia Companion app as suggested by Sony. I'm going to escalate me case with them tomorrow to see if I can get any more info. Found another thread about the issue/similar issues.
Sorry about the novel. I'm kinda sad about this whole thing because I otherwise absolutely love the phone.
Yup everybody has this issue. I'm convinced people who say they don't have it are just too blind to notice. I've not seen any video of a 1IV that shows a screen that doesn't have the issue. I always just keep my screen at 90% brightness and just the "Extra dim" quick toggle to make it less bright. If I'm in bed on my phone I use OLED Saver to make it even darker.
Well, I can't see that on mine.
Maybe not the best example, but this is a picture I took this summer, one is at max brightness and the other one is at some 60%. Tried with some other darker photos I have and no traces of that green tint.
Also, my phone switches to dark theme at night and with automatic brightness it certainly goes way below 90% and still everything looks black. Or at least not that obviously green.
...You realise that's not how a screenshot works, right?
Yeah, was just an example photo. But cannot reproduce that. Found topic on reddit, gonna try some HDR stuff but have to say that if that's what triggers it than will certainly never have the problem with it.
Just borrow a mate's phone and film your screen while you adjust the brightness above and below 90%. The difference is very obvious.
Then it should be obvious to my eyes also, like in his video. And that does not happening on the above photo. Anyway, gong back home tomorrow so will play with it a bit more.
No issues on my rooted device.
