[Q] Droid X vs. Droid X2 - Motorola Droid X2

Im just wondering what the differences are that make the Droid X get Cyanogenmod and ICS ports and not the Droid X2. I thought the Droid X had a locked bootloader as well. If someone found a way around the locked bootloader on the Droid X, why wont the same method work for us? Are the ROM ports for the Droid X "dumbed down" versions of the ROMs in order for them to work on a locked bootloader? If so, again, why cant we get them? I know there is probably some technical answer that sums it up. Im just asking out of curiosity.

From my understanding, the Droid X got a leaked dev rom that contained the unlocked bootloader. I'm not 100% sure where this was acquired, perhaps someone can chime in.

Lucky DX users. lol. I cant wait to have some unlocked bootloader goodness. I hope the X2 Devs get this thing unlocked soon. Im rootin' for them.

I just came from a droid X. The bootloader never got unlocked, but the devs found out how enable the droid X to run everything as if it had an unlocked bootloader except custom kernels by using 2nd init. The roms were not dumbed down at all and we had everything from CM7 to MIUI to OMFGB.

No unlocked bootloader. TBH got a leaked dev sbf I think or the like.

Thats what I thought. I thought none of Motorolas phones where unlocked. Its just weird that two phones that are pretty much identical, cant run the same stuff. I wish we could just take the stuff that "unlocked" the Droid X and use it for us. Im ready to flash something new on my phone.

Oh sorry folks. I remember there was a Droid X overclock and thought they manage to unlock the bootloader.

edit, off topic...

There are unlocked Motorola phones
ATRIX, photon,
The XOOM came out as a google experience device as well

Btw, they're not identical, I believe the x has a different processor.

they look similar... but that's pretty much where the similarities ends.. if you mess around with the x and the x2... you'll find out they vary allot... recovery is very different... the only reboot options the x has is bootloader/safe/recovery... where are the x2 has a fastboot mode and all that... with the dual core processor as opposed to the x's single core...
but the reason why the x2 is just now getting cm7 is pretty simple...kinda...
to get into bootstrap with the x2... you need to plug your phone in order to use bootstrap... with the x.. and most other phones this is isn't necessary... and this is because there are some files for the screen and what not... dragonzkiller has a great post explaining this in dev section... for some of those necessary files to run the phone even in recovery... you can't unmount the /system... and by requiring the phone to be plugged in... koush said this was a "dirty hack" and that's why rom manager doesn't actually support the x2... which has lead to a lack of development...

No... The lack of dev was due to the bootloader being locked. But now that they have gotten 2nd-Init working the dev should pick up.

I hope so. An ICS port would be pretty cool too.

The lack of dev support is the reason I miss my DX. Hope that changes soon!

[Q] Locked Bootloader and Custom Roms

I've been looking around the web for a while and can't find an answer.
Does the locked-bootloader on the RAZR make it impossible to install a custom ROM on the phone?
I really want to get this phone but only if there is a chance I'll be able to put a custom ROM on it.

Here is a quote from a user on Rootzwiki about the locked bootloader (user Soapinmouth posted this, not me)
I disagree i think the razr is going to be the hottest selling Droid since the og. You have to remember the people that even know what a bootloader is are an extremely small % of buyers, and then there's those that do and still buy it like me.
In all honesty the locked bl is way overblown, id say a good 75% of the community has no idea what the locked bl even prevents.
It
DOES NOT prevent custom roms
DOES NOT prevent overclocking
DOES NOT prevent rooting
It
Does prevent custom kernals
Well that's a relief, so a chance MIUI would be on this bad boy?

I cannot WAIT for overclock. Push this thing to 1.8GHz+ and I'll keep it the full two years. With proper memory management (custom user values and/or 4.0) this phone is as future proof as you're gonna find in the next 6-12 months. Who wants Samsung plastics and no Gorilla Glass?
Isn't overclocking going to be out of the question without a custom kernel?

Lol why would you want to OC that high? Only benefit you'd get are higher bench scores and maybe a few more fps in some games. Also imagine the heat as this phone alreayd runs fairly hot. I doubt there is anything in Android that requires even more than a 1ghz DC. Pretty much all the performance issues we see now are due to poor coding. Also the software doesn't atm doesn't have proper hardware acceleration I believe? iPhone 5 with a 800mhz DC, hell even a single core has a smoother UI than most Android phones. Not an apple fan or anything, just stating what I have seen and facts. Good example is the HTC Rezound is 300 mhz "faster" than the RAZR and the RAZR performs quite better. Hardware is nice yes, but it's nothing without the proper software optimizations. If we do get to overlock I'd probably just pump it to 1.4 - 1.5 , since I think atm that's the point before you get diminishing returns.
Edit: Speaking of temps battery/cpu are at like 103-104 while watching Netflix with full screen brightness. I wonder how high the clock speeds can go without bumping voltage.

Well, Moto has explicitly said it will be unlockable so unless they were purposefully lying, I would say yes.
I read here (sorry it's in french forum) the bootloader is lock .... Because I must do a choice betwen GN and RAZR and I like more the Razr but if it s lock I chose the GN ....
When do you think we can say really if the bootlader is really lock or not ?
The BL is locked. However, it'll be unlocked with ICS update, coming in late december this year or january 2012.
The locked BL will make you unable to flash proper custom ROMs, only "hacked" ones and it isn't possible to make a decent and really performancewise custom ROM at the moment with a locked BL.
It will prevent you to install custom kernels, too.
Anyway, don't worry, from the statement Motorola made, if they won't unlock it with ICS (they will as they've done the same thing on ATRIX w/GB) they'll be suable as they've made a public statment confirming a thing that has made us to buy a 560 euros device.
Thanks for that, I hope because I prefer this phone ....

positive, i'm absolutely sure it will get unlocked. Motorola already said that several times now..
So a locked bootloader will not prevent one from installing a custom ROM but only a custom kernel?
What's the difference between a ROM and kernel?
The XT720 is locked and had miui, overclocking and about a dozen roms.
Besides, I thought safestrap basically solves this problem for us?

Done flashing this phone for now.

1. Motorola has **** policies with their locked down bootloaders.
2. The devs here and at rootzwiki are the true gods of the android world.
Now that those are clear, I think I am done flashing this phone for now. It's my wife's phone and with all the custom roms there is always something that fc's or doesn't quite work right (yes i follow the correct steps). Going back to stock 2.3.5 with root because frankly for her needs stock root is just fine. Unless CM is fully ported over and stable or Fvckinh motorola unlocks the bootloader for truly custom roms, I am not bothering. It's really pathetic that a flagship 3g phone is abandoned by the manufacturer thus leading to poor interest from the dev community (the devs that are working on it, i am highly grateful to and hope their efforts bore fruit).
Once again FU motorola.
Lol I know what you mean about the wifes phone my wife has the bionic stock and not rooted. I have read the bionic forum and I feel confident I can root it make a nano back up and flash a rom on it. However she has seen me fight with my phone to many times lol. I told her it runs fine and I am always tweaking it to try and get more out if it. But I know the first time she gets a fc I will never hear the end if it. I almost rooted it and flashed a stock looking rom just to speed it up for her but like I said one thing goes and I will not hear the end of it.
But formyself I can say with the x2 i am very happy with eclipse and stock just seems horribly slow. Eclipse 2.02 and v6 supercharger and very stable and happy.
eclipse makes her contacts fc and she has been clawing my brains out. gonna try stock + supercharger v7 this weekend.
I had contact issues on 2.0 but 2.02 has been great for me. But I feel your oain not worth hassle of the boss.
Haha it took me forever to convince my mother that I could make a world of difference on her OG DROID if I ran CM. The first thing she did when I got home from school was hand me the phone. As I'm rooting, I wonder when the first hiccup will occur. She hated to admit how much better it ran when I first asked, but boy did the wrath come when the screen didn't turn on for a phone call.
She doesn't share the excitement for an unlocked bootloader as I do. " Just make sure Facebook is working"...

Actually, all the bloat is from Verizon, not Motorola.
Also, Motorola WOULD unlock IF Verizon would allow it. But, for some reason, Verizon won't budge.
However, HTC somehow convinved Verizon to allow them to unlock the bootloader, so maybe Moto should talk with HTC to see what they did.

oh crapp... i installed stock 2.3.5 without a nandroid. basically when i opened the contacts app and click a contact, com.motorola.contacts would fc. if i tried to access the contact from like a google voice window or something, same thing would happen. i would have to memorize a number after looking at the contact list and then put into the dialer to make a call.
i think facebook, google voice were the only 2 programs that did things with contacts.

htc did it, so should motorola. if verizon can have the nexus on their network, unlocking the bootloader for a phone thats basically forgotten now shouldnt be a problem. and if everyone wants to be such a ****, what are leaks for.
i figured out the cause of the contacts fc-ing. titanium deleting the yahoo mail authenticator is somehow not liked by motorola contacts. but im still glad i returned to stock. speedy + build prop mashup make the phone really fast, and games like fruit ninja lagged on custom roms, that doesnt happen anymore. the aosp dialer was also garbage and did not support name searches which the motorola dialer does. now that i have deleted the 40 or so bloat apps the phone runs exceedingly well.
just wish douchebag motorola would unlock it already so that the stellar devs over here could get good roms going instead of wasting their time with the bootloader.

Should I buy the Droid RAZR?

Uhh.. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt since you were a former HTC user, so I won't rank on ya but unfortunately, our Motorola devices are still currently locked in terms of their boot-loaders. You'll notice threads in this forum such as Operation MOSH (Make OurSelves Heard) and other various complaints and such about the boot-loader being locked down.
Now with that said, a locked boot-loader isn't necessary a bad thing, especially on the RAZR MAXX. It all depends upon what type of user you are. If you are a deep enthusiast or developer who likes the freedom to flash fully-customizable ROMs, then if you choose a Motorola product, you'll have to wait until Motorola finally gives in. We're hoping to eventually get Motorola to unlock their bootloaders as they promised that they would try to by the end of 2011.
However, just recently a "Developer Edition" of the Motorola RAZR has been released in the EU. This device has an unlockable bootloader, but at the expense of no warranty and full-price cost.
Aside from the locked bootloader, I love my RAZR MAXX. It's the best phone out there amongst the other RAZRs with its extended battery life, solid build, and fluid UI.
Despite the locked bootloader, there are a few ROMs in development for the RAZR, including Hashcode's ICS port that he is working on (Soon to come). The downside is we're stuck with the kernel we have locked down until a solution can be found.
Nevertheless, its all based on personal preference really. I touted between the HTC Rezound and MAXX for a while, until I decided that the MAXX was a better fit for me.
thanks for the info. I am no too worried about roms so much as free wifi and bluetooth tethering to my xoom. might just check it out in the store to see if it is possible. This helps alot though! Hopefully they are releasing the dev version to test a free patch to the devices.
EDIT:: seems there is bluetooth tether, and root access.
I also wonder if the Razr is worth picking up. I am currently an owner of an Motorola Xoom and I love that device its pure awesomness. But I heard many people had issue's with the screen, the sim-card is disconnecting with the device, faulty headphone jack etc. Is that something common`? I have previously owned: SGS, ZTE Blade and HTC Desire Z. All 3 had terrible built quality.
I currently own the razr and I got to say this is the first moto phone that I actually love. Besides the obvious downsides like the locked boot loader and battery its a great device. It is extremely thin, light, fast, and durable you wouldn't think that moto made it. I previuosly owned the moto bionic which was the worst phone I ever owned and I also owned an HTC Dinc, best phone I ever owned, to bad the usb port gave way. I would say the the razr is almost a cross between the two... sorta.

I can report no problems with my MAXX that others have reported with their RAZR. Build quality is on the Motorola is superb. I have owned several DROID devices by Motorola, and that is certainly something they did right to say the least.
The Razr is definitely worth buying. I've had mine for about a month and it's been flawless. I've got it rooted, installed a cwm recovery and Shady's Arctic themed rom. Runs great.
And you don't have to be rooted to enjoy tethering with PDAnet.

Meh. Spec wise it's nice, but it's really just a RAZR with a keyboard. Battery isn't that impressive, around 1800 mAh IIRC (Dx2 stock is 1500), and with 4G LTE this'll be another charge in the morning, charge in the evening type phone (if you last till the evening) AND the battery isn't even removable!
Plus there's always that bootloader issue and the fact it isn't running ICS, which means it'll be getting that after the razr, xoom and bionic.
No thanks. I'm good on Moto devices for a while anyway.

There's not a lack of ROMs. In fact, we have a lot of ROMs:
Liberty - although it appears development has stopped
Molten - Magma is supposedly on the horizon
CM7 - another release is forthcoming in a few days per DZK
MIUI - still a work in progress
CM9 - not released yet, but DZK is working on it
Eclipse - Nitro is constantly working on this. 2.0.4 was just released.
So, lack of ROMs isn't an issue with this phone. I'd say we have quite a lot to choose from.
What has us upset is apparently, no ICS and no unlocked bootloader. The latter is a big issue because they promised they would start unlocking bootloaders. To this date, there is just ONE phone that has a bootloader unlocked and it hasn't been released yet - the Droid RAZR Developer Edition and who's to say whether or not Verizon will release this phone onto their network. My feeling is no AND I don't want to purchase ANOTHER Motorola phone just to get my bootloader unlocked.
That is really the ONLY reason I'm not going with Moto anymore. I'm also looking into getting off of Verizon. Problem is, I really need the coverage and no other carrier has the coverage I need in the areas I go to and I must have my coverage, period. So, I'm probably stuck with Verizon, so I just need to see if I can find a phone on Verizon that has the bootloader unlocked. Supposedly, HTC has been allowed to unlock some of their bootloaders on Verizon, so I'll probably go that route.

When I first got my phone I had a choice between the Droid X2 or the Droid 3. I've never had an android phone before so I didnt know what the differences were as far as ROMs and such. So the only reason I didnt get the Droid 3 is because of the slide out keyboard. Not that I had a problem with a slide out physical keyboard (I DID have a Pre Plus before this), I would just never use it. I dont like using my phone in portrait mode. I dont know why. It just doesnt seem comfortable to me. So I wouldnt get a phone with a portrait slide out keyboard, which means I will probably never get a phone from the Droid series. Im fairly happy with my DX2. But then again, with this being my first android phone, I dont know what its like to have an unlocked bootloader. My next phone will probably not be Motorola just to see what other phones can do.

Ummm hell yes, it does! WasabiWa83 has a Rezound (previous Droid X2 owner) and raves about it. It is quite possibly one of the most amazing phones I have ever seen. Unless something better comes out in the next few months, my next phone will be a Rezound.
P.S. - WasabiWa83 also does custom signatures, wallpapers, posters, etc for phones/computers if anyone is interested! I've had him do some for me (he actually created my sig, my phone's homescreen wallpaper, and my computer's desktop wallpaper), and his work is amazing, whether you want something big or small.

DX2 Running CM9

So far ive been running CM9 and its alot smoother although there are minor glitches and some times it reboots and apps force close but dragonkiller also leaves dev tools installed has anyone heard if the kernel has been updated
The kernel cannot be updated because Moto and Verizon lock the bootloader.
dragonkiller is working on a kernel bypass

Thanks im still very new to this
I have a Fascinate which is 2 years old. It runs ICS very smoothly. Of course I can flash a custom kernel, then tweak the kernel to my liking. It's sad for the X2 we cannot. It makes the life of our developers much harder in getting things to run smoooooth.
Both my fascinate and my X2 have the same ram..not a ram issue, it's just the damn bootloader that is locked.

DROID DOES, Apple did...like I forgot when
I was running CM9 on my Droid X until it crapped out on me yesterday and Verizon is sending me a X2. I believe the X had a locked bootloader also and it ran CM9 very well.
Since I can't post in the thread I want to cause I don't have 10 posts yet I am wondering a couple things about getting CM9 on the X2 when it arrives. The OP for CM9 Alpha5 is sort of misleading... I have flashed a ton of roms on my X but the X2 seems like there is an extra step or two. Will I need to be on 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 before flashing CM9? I already downloaded BSR for X2, I see something about a patched BSR for CM9; will I need this if I coming from Gingerbread or just the BSR?
