[Q] Clear 4G - Motorola Photon 4G

So I've been wondering about this for a while but I wouldn't know where to begin with any of it. I have Clear 4G as my home internet. They use the same towers as Sprint so since I have a login with them is there any way that using that information could enable 4G on an unlocked Photon? I highly doubt it but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

It could be possible, check the wimax information on the ##data# section. It is also possible that some of the other wimax files would need to be altered, but anything is possible.
Just curious why would you want to do this? Other than it would be cool to do..

What if you have a 4g capable device, is there a way to use your info off the photon to log on to clearwire? If so would this info be in ##data#?
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

it would give you the info needed to log in, but the mac address would give it away :/
you would need to clone the base station's onto your phone...
afaik only the epic 4g allows you to change the mac address on the fly, all other wimax phones havent been able do anything of the sort

Are you sure there is mac address filtering?

Spoof the mac addy if the username and pass in data doesnt work
I live in chandler AZ ..they have some sprint and some clear towers around here..i have been able to connect to a clear tower ..it said sprint..but it was a clear tower....they must have a sharing/roaming deal setup

You are correct, I looked it up awhile back. Sprint officially has no wimax coverage in Arizona. But it is a 5 company joint venture to deploy the wimax network. Clear is the company in charge of the building the network with cash infused from the other partners, so it's no surprise they are peered with sprint who is one of the big investors. The clear website has a coverage map which is effectively sprints coverage map for Arizona.
And i wouldn't be surprised if the user name and password are enough its worth a try and try spoofing the mac address if that don't work. It would actually be a help to know the results of this since the 4G issue involves a check bit that gets changed during boot but Noone knows if it is vital for the phone to use the modem or if it is referenced during network authentication last I heard.. They may have figured it out by now but they were still stumped last I checked.

Check out this thread not sure if it works. but this guy was able to add clear 4g to his sprint phone. He had to dial ##3282# and change the Wimax Realm from sprint to clear.

I flashed a few phones to cricket, but have not had the chance to try this to see if this works.

I believe it's impossible. At best, all you'll be able to do is voice and nothing more. No data at all, whether 3G or 4G. Network authentication is done differently on an LTE device. They will ask you for an ESN number, which you will not be able to find anywhere on the device.

Eh, not entirely true. I checked out the carrier and it's sprint's cdma network so he should get voice and 3g data fine. Obviously won't be getting anything above 3g speeds though.
speeds though
To the OP if you are really motivated to do it, I would read this as it shows how others have done it for the thunderbolt.

Sprint doesn't use a compatible data network authentication scheme as Verizon, so no, he will have no data service unless he can find a ROM for the Tbolt specifically ported from a Sprint device. It's well known that Sprint devices such as the EVO line don't work on Verizon, and that Verizon devices such as the dInc and dInc2 will not work on Sprint. I've worked with both.

It's easy enough to look up. Search the dInc forums. I know there's several threads there addressing this issue. I'd be surprised if the EVO 4G forum didn't have a few too, and I know there's at least 1 or 2 in the Tbolt forum that address this issue as well; a fact I considered pointing out to the OP. Furthermore, Tbolts don't have ESN numbers. They interface with both the 3G and 4G protocols differently than standard CDMA devices.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138411
This kinda explains what I'm saying. If you can't do it with a straight CDMA device without a world-class hassle, it's functionally impossible with a Tbolt.

Yeah, perhaps not with sprint's network (after reading), but certain networks seem to work like Metro's. If the OP has to ask though, he probably doesn't have the will/determination to persist on doing whatever it takes though. He'd be better off getting something like a nexus s for sprint and use it on boost or an evo of some sort.
Yeah I was just confused weather I will be able to read the esn and MEID locations. Right now I have Dinc with Boost mobile, mms, data, sms and voice all working.
But now I want the Thunderbolt and because it uses a Sim card I wasn't entirely sure.

Just like Teo said, yes you can.
Just a matter of changing the APN and deleting another one.
Let me find the thread on that for you.
*Here it is and I believe page 4 has the instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301104&highlight=wifi+hotspot
Only for a short time it doesn't look for the apn, T-Mobile knows your using the hot spot and there is an amount that it lets you use before forcing the feature on you, although I've never found how much it is that it lets you use but I can tell you it indicates to us what percentage you have used of what it allows you to. Changing apns might work but only until they decomission some of the older apns and it doesn't work for everybody I seen people get mad because they can't access web because they are using an old apn or because they can't use hot spot for free anymore lol

ill say this man, store reps for the most part aren't very knowledgeable they are trained to sell to average joe, they know nothing about how it works on the back end. Most of them would try to sell you the galaxy S 2 and tell you its totally superior to the amaze. On the back end when you use hot spot it notes your account in 25% increments that you have used a certain allotment of tethering why T-Mobile allows free use of it who knows but its great for customers I just tell people it lets you try it pretty well but will eventually tell you that you have to pay to continue using it we never been told why it lets people use it free for a bit and I've tried looking into it. If at&t ever takes over it will probably change seeing how they are pretty strict about tethering for now enjoy

I think you've mistaken, we don't use a different apn, we just add a new apn with the same apn... the epc one.
we delete the two original apns so it doesn't switch back. There's something extra in the stock APNs that causes the tethering block (someone mentioned it somewhere but i find it easier to just delete and add a new one)
so unless they block the epc one, which is their main one at the moment, then we're free to use it. besides xboarder already has a workaround for it too.
But if you're not rooted and you're on a fresh factory restore, the adding apn method works. ONLY on fresh factory resets though, before you try toggling the wifi tether. this is what a few others and i discovered roughly a month ago
Epc is the current one that we use at T-Mobile so that would be wrong, they can track which ever one they like point being that it doesn't matter what you do anyone gets free use whether you change it or not, either way being rooted lets you use wireless tether so it doesn't matter. But I've personally seen people get blocked on different apns, I even went as far as having it researched for someone who claimed to not be using what they came back with was interesting.

not exactly sure what you're pointing out is wrong. I'm actually confused about the whole run on sentence lol. Not sure if you realize that they originally block it straight out of the box. You can't use it at all. So no, it isn't free use whether you change it or not for the Amaze. You HAVE to add a new apn if you want to use it on stock.
we've been discussing for a while now so i don't know if you even tried using your wifi hotspot yet for your amaze because this device is not like other devices where you can use it straight out of the box. and yes if you don't add the new apn, it gets blocked after it reaches a certain point.
I understand what you're saying about ppl using all the other available tmobile apns, but we don't need to do that for the amaze. What you're saying relates to ALL devices, so you're making ppl skeptical about wifi hotspot on the amaze. Like the guy before me saying to use his nexus, it would relate to his nexus too.

Let's clarify this.
With the release of the Amaze and GS2 they have changed the way tethering is recognized. On previous phones it SHOULD catch you at 200mb (think of it like a preview) and then throw an upsell message. Yes, employees were not caught as they have different permissions but they were supposed to get the upsell as well. With the new phones they WILL get the upsell (trust me, I talk to upset employees every week that got one of the above mentioned phones and now have to pay). Employees do NOT get to tether for free, we are supposed to pay for the $14.99 tether feature like everyone else. If you have an amaze that is not rooted and has not had the apns changed and you can tether, then it is a fluke.
The amaze seems to block this through the apn settings. NOT the apn itself. The original work around was to just delete the apn type field and it would work. Seems to work better if you create a new apn with JUST epc.tmobile.com and delete the old ones. Of course, if you're rooted, most roms have fixes implemented so you don't have to do anything.
With both devices, if left completely alone and without the tether feature, you will get the upsell message immediately. No 200mb "buffer."
^^ yes finally a support, end thread.

Can't connect to mobile network?

So I went to visit the parents and they live in the mountains in a roaming area. I had roaming service for the first day and it went away the next? I tried updating PRL, putting the different corporate PRLs on and the 00002 prl. That didn't work..updated PRL and then tried updating Profile but the profile wouldn't update.
My phone is showing FULL bars with a triangle but no 3g, H or 1x. So I can't call, text, or use the internet. I tried restoring a nand, tried full wipe with a fresh install, tried flipping airplane.mode on and off, tried everything I could possibly think of. Even bought the roam controller app.
So I finally call Sprint and all they said is to pull the battery..tried that and no luck. They said they can't help me if I'm roaming.
I'm really stumped. Think it could just be the towers? I'm here for a week and need service for important calls.
Smart people use googlevoice. NO ONE HAS MY PERSONAL NUMBER. Therefore, as long as I use google voice.... I can re-direct to whatever number I wish. So if out of area. boom. redirect it to the landline. lol. "Sorry mom and dad. I'm stealing your phone for the week." lol. OR YOU CAN BUY ONE OF THOSE devices if they have a good internet connection. then your 3G will work. But then again. as you said you can't use data. so I'm guessing they have no wifi or internet at all. sucks to be you.

Roaming data on sprint

OK this is a stupid question but I would like clarification from some of you in this forum. I am currently running CNA JB on my photon. Over the last few weeks I have used over 600KB of roaming data. When I got my bill it did not show this data because roaming on Verizon is 1X speed and Sprint tracks 3G on the bill. My question is will Sprint realize I am using all the roaming data and try and boot me or will it fly under the radar? Additionally I do not see a section for roaming minutes or texts. Are they tracking this as well?
I know many of you object to roaming PRL's however I am currently away from home for the military and do not have Sprint service here. It will get changed back when I get home in a few months, I just want to make sure I do not get booted before then. Thanks

I can tell you for a fact that you will not get charged. I just pulled up my bills for the last 6 months and I have used roaming data every month. The concern with sprint is that they will not charge you, but if they think you are using to much they will cancel you so you can go to another carrier that has better service in your area. This saves them money because they pay Verizon for the data you use in roaming.

I wish I knew this before I took a trip out to Wyoming but the answers are true, roaming isn't a problem. Per sprint policy : Continus Roaming over a 90 Day period will constitute sprint into sending you a letter concearning your constant use off the network, they will give you a chance to return using the service or be canceled if continued. This only applies to users that live and use their phones off network (roaming) for a continus period of time ( living and working in a area that never had sprint coverage, bottom half of the contract explains this and states if you dont use their service or excessively use a roaming service it constitutes a breach in contact and can further cost a ETF ( early termination fee).. If you have DSL and are in a roaming area, call sprint and ask for a AIRRAVE - free femcell booster for sprint customers only that are in poor coverage or out of the service area ( this turns your dsl into a sprint signal and supports calls and net)
I have always roamed xD I use about as much roaming or sprint as I wish just whichever gets better service or faster Internet (usually sprint since its 3g and I needa change out my Prl to get my 3g work in on roaming I think) any good references to how to change your prl easily?

I don't believe we can access another networks 3g because its hidden from a non subscriber.. the question is where we could be if the sim card for international was able to be motofied into a roaming on gsm networks when service is unavalible while still CDMA and on home only.. never happening tho

Not sure .. I do believe any Prl that is roaming related to data will break regular data 3g until back on your carriers data Prl .. correct me if I'm wrong but the ril is closest to running a off network data 3g or equivalent without flashing a different prl each time unless you can flash over automatic and have force roam 3g..

Anyway to stay 4G in a 4G LTE area?... Let me explain why...

Ok. So I have always just had 4G in my area until recently. I have the APN info to run unthrottled. I have an unlimited data plan and I use my phone for tethering my computer and my xboxs at home. Since it is now LTE now my UNTHROTTLED, APN switches on and off randomly and eventually knocks me back to the regular ATT PTA APN. I want to find a way to lock my phone to 4G only so I can stay on the unthrottled APN so I can at least have 2mbps instead of being throttled down to 500kbps a quarter of the way through the month. Which makes it practically impossible to play xbox games online or stream a movie, Download anything is a headache now. The worst part about it is even the LTE maxes out at 5mbps where I live anyways so it's not like I'm getting 21+ like I do in other LTE areas. Is there anyway around this or should I invest in an Android 4G only phone and just use it while at home? Thanks for any help that someone could give me.
Excessive data use always gets throttled. No way around it. I'm not saying "excessive use", at&t is.
They easily track usage by your sim card and IEMI, so APN settings don't matter.
Actually.....
Actually. With the APN I had it never got throttled. I was doing 46gigs+ a month. Never ever got throttled until it knocked me up to LTE and made my phone skip the un throttled APN.

46GBs? It's about time you did get throttled. 4G and LTE APN's should both be throttled APNs. Try the 3G APN.
I agree, save some bandwidth for the rest of us. I don't know how you haven't had your account closed down yet, or why you weren't throttled using a particular APN for so long. Must have just been network goofiness, because like rangercaptain said, that's not how AT&T tracks you for throttling anyway.
Edit: Moving to a 3G APN shouldn't matter either. Nor would being on a 2G or 3G-only tower. No matter what I'm connected to, I'm still limited to 5GB/month before getting throttled, because that's where grandfathered LTE plans are set. Doesn't matter if I'm actually using LTE or not, it's per-plan.
46+ Gb? Really???? Unbelievable! No, really. Unbelievable. You must mean 4.6 Gb because you'd be turned off, or at least you'd be getting communications from your carrier. I think either you are telling stories or you don't really know what you are talking about.
Johnus is 100% correct for AT&T. You get 5 Gb unthrottled per unlimited plan. Doesn't matter if you consume that 5 Gb using LTE, 4G, 3G, or string and soup cans.
I'm serious. I was getting months of 46 and more gigs without being throttled using one specific APN. The weird thing is now that yesterday I cut my phone on and all my APNs were gone except the default. They don't mess with me because the last time they tried to take me off unlimited for tethering I caused a big scene and kept on getting my call transfered up to a higher and higher management denying the fact that I did it and threatened them with a lawsuit. I already have a FCC complaint set up against them for throttling since it was never notified of agreed to a change in my plan. I was using a 4G APN that had what looked like corporate **** on it because I to this day can't find the info I had that I put in to get away with it. Now that it's LTE now it cuts 4G to completely off to 4G not allowing me to stay online longer than 15mins before it shuts down. That's all erased somehow now. My tethering file is deleted and I use wifitether app to do my tethering and have not been caught while tethering since I did that over 6months ago and for 6months I have been using about 50g a month

I guess they won.
It's far from over. I'm over 6gigs now and not throttled. Since using the tweakker APN. And I have been told if you file an FCC complaint they will let you run wide open once it gets filed with them. Usually take a month or two. They have so many lawsuits pending right now they can not deal with another.

..... And in my area, I assure you that my data usage is not effecting any of you. I live 30miles outside of Memphis TN. In the middle of nowhere. A year ago my phone only picked up in one spot in my entire house. The city is so small they banned any towers for going up because of the fear of radiation. I live around a bunch of ignorant rednecks that use Walmart prepaid phones and the only Internet they know of is Hughes Net and the local library.

Where can I find a full ATT APN list?

Really not sure I can take anything you say as serious. That said, if you get anywhere with you supposed FCC filing, you'd be the first. The issue has already been tested and AT&T is on firm ground.
This is how you can take me seriously. That shows my data usage.

Gonna post this months data usage with my Internet speed.. It never shows a tether is being used. It is unexplainable by looking at the phone info where the data is using. Which is also exactly what ATT gets, they have no clue where I'm using so much data.

My apologies. I gotta admit, the proof is in the pics. I know that ATT would normally go ballistic about this so I don't really understand why you're getting away with it. They really don't care what you use the data for. Normally, all they care about is how much data you've used in a month. You are getting away with murder, my man. Good for you!
It's because they have threatened me in the past. I threatened back and they backed off. But it was before I deleted the tether file and used wifi tether app. They busted me for tethering now they can't. Can't tell what I'm using it for. It's like they try to throttle me at certain times. Randomly now that I have LTE coming thru at my home. I was wondering how many others have figured this out. I guess it is just that I threatened to put a lawsuit on them.

Can you give some more info on what you did? I'll give it a go and see if i can pull the wool over their eyes, too.
