After over 6 hours on the phone with Samsung support (until 2:30 am on SAt.) I was told to take the device back(stock and unrooted) and exchange or get a refund. I called Staples and was assured that they had PLENTY in stock(their words) so I made the 45 minute drive (one way) and upon arriving at the store the cashier was very polite but said she must talk to Mgr. The mgr shows up and says "oh your bringing back another one,(with a huge smirk on his face) I said yes I had tried very hard to resolve the issues with support but could not. The mgr continued to smirk and look at me like "yeah right" He said he must call his district mgr he left and the cashier apologized for him saying"He should not have treated you like that. The mgr returned and still had the same smirk on his face. and said "what do you want to do?" I replied, I will try another one ( I had purchased one a week and a half ago and returned it for refund after 3 days.) He said just a moment and went to the store room and when he came back he said I can exchange it for one in an opened box, I replied NO WAY!!. He then said that they had 2 in the back and both were opened, I said what happend to the plenty I was told on the phone? I then asked for a refund and he whispered something to the girl and smirked again and left. The cashier then all of a sudden had all of this info about stock in the backroom etc. I firmly believe that they did not want to exchange the device and would rather refund and look for others to come in and buy their stock.(opened and unopened) The cashier apologized once again for the mgr's actions. I got the number for corporate and will call tomorrow. Upon reading the coupon it says coupon good only while supplies last. That could mean that all stores were only shipped a very few. I now have no coupon and no device. I had just returned the TF I had been trying and decided to stick with the Gtab and had purchased a Samsung keyboard for it at BB. Anyone else have problems with Staples?
I will not shop at Staples again after the way I was treated when my wife and I went to the store to buy my Samsung Tab, was treated very rudely by a manager, ended up driving 45min to BB the next day to buy my tab. Guess they didn't want my money!!
To make a long story short, website said in stock, went to store, young kid said oh yeah we have some in the back but I can't go back and get them. Asked to speak to a manager, she said it was too much work to get it out of the back and I should buy a Xoom because it has an sd card (funny huh?) I exchanged several intense sentences with the manager and left the store and will not ever go back in one. I pulled our business away from them on our business side as well. Doesn't hurt me any, I order from other places now.
While at BB purchasing the keyboard a man and his girl friend saw the keyboard and asked me how I liked the Gtab. I replied I really liked it but might have to return it for issues. He then stated that he was going to attempt to get BB to honor the coupon for the Gtab. I told him I had tried that at another BB and it was a no go. Well about 2 minutes later the mgr showed up and told him no problem. So perhaps there is a chance I can get the same BB to honor a coupon when I find one. I am going to return the keyboard as it would not function properly(called samsung support and they could not help me get it to be recognized by the Gtab. I will try to purchase the device with coupon.
Here's the coupon for $100 off if you need it

Thanks!!! I also hit the thanks button !!!!!!
Maybe Staples has caught wind of people trying to return locked GT's to try and find unlocked ones, or at least that store did. Kinda like what I wanted to do but decided not to, not worth the hassle and gas with a perfectly fine GT.
I was going to keep trying to get BB to honor the coupon because I wanted the 32gb version, but my first attempt at my local BB failed. So I decided that was not worth the gas and hassle so yesterday I had the Ghost Armor screen protector put on, no returning now.

was not trying to get an unlocked one(would have been nice though) just one without a lot of issues. Samsung support after over 6 hours urged me to take it back for an exchange.

I am not questioning your motive or reason, I would do the same in your shoes. Just saying maybe they have had people doing that, I was about to do that, and he just did not believe you. Which is totaly wrong, he should smile and take the tablet back from you and give you a new one.

Just got off phone with CS at Staples and what a waste of time. They acknowledge that the mgr was wrong in his actions but the item is out of stock and they have no idea when it will come back in stock again. When it does I must pay full price or whatever the going rate is at the time. They will not issue a rain check. Just checked and All of the stores in my area(within 50 miles) now show not available at store for the Gtab and the acer Iconia. What a ripoff. They just decided that the coupon (!00) was too good of a deal and just pulled it from the stores.
You could have exchanged it for an open box unit and then waited for some new ones to do another exchange later. Maybe one of the open box units was like new? The coupon is good until 7/30 so you can keep checking local stock.
And what was wrong with your tab? (just curious...)

Wow that is terrible, so sorry to hear that. Maybe try and bring coupon to BB and see if they will honor it, there have been some success stories of that happening. I think the coupon is good till the 30th, maybe you can get lucky at a BB. They should have given you the rain check since you were able to purchase it in the first place and you recevied one that was faulty.
If I were you I would try one of the open box items, maybe there is nothing wrong with one of them. If you still get the 14 day return policy you can test that one out and if something wrong finally return it or possibly exchange that one in 14 days when they may have more in stock?

It had almost constant black screen freezes and youtube videos would not play without FC. Also constant Samsung apps FC. Also it refused to acknowledge the samsung keyboard I purchase for it. I tried all of the fixes mentioned in this forum and also spend over 6 hours with samsung support to no avail.
Interesting stories about Staples customer service. I bought a 16 GB Galaxy Tab from Staples on the first day of the coupon offer, and got an unopened, unlocked unit that I am very happy with.
But, before I said I wanted to buy one, the salesperson would not go to get one out of the back (so I could examine the specs on the box), which I found strange. And, once I said I wanted to buy, he pushed like crazy to get me to buy the protection plan ($230 on a $400 purchase!!), over and over again, which was very annoying.
I would have much preferred to buy at BB if I knew they would have honored the coupon, but I did end up with a well-performing Tab.
never had a problem with staples

UPDATE: I ended up going to BB and was turned down by mgr and then later that day I found out a staples near BB had one in stock (acer iconia and Motorola xoom) upon arriving there it turned out one was display unit(acer iconia) and the price on the Xoom was 599 instead of 499.00.I decided against both of them. Stopped by BB on way home and was considering buying a TF at full price. Just for fun I asked the sales rep to help me and he replied he was busy and then got this other rep to help me. I asked him if he would honor the staple coupon and he said funny you should ask we just got an email from corporate(he showed it to me) and we are authorized to honor the coupon (just the devices listed in email) if the store nearest us has it in stock I knew the closest store did not so just said if you honor it I will buy the Gtab. He then asked me what color -size etc and I replied 16gb white and he pulled one out of the cage. I thought he would call the nearest Staples but he did not. He just rang it up and told the girl at the main counter it was done according to the email just received. When I got home and unboxed it I found that it was UNLOCKED!!!!! I am go grateful. To be able to get a good Grab in the color I preferred from the start and to find it unlocked is just Amazing. Keep trying BB if you have not picked up a tab with the 100.00 coupon yet.

Not sure why I keep reading about people RMAing their Primes for any of the MANY problems some of them have but the only thing people should be doing is returning them to the store they bought it from for a refund or exchange point blank bottom line.
1. It's Asus fault not yours the Primes had no quality control you deserve a brand new perfectly working unit that you paid $500 for
2. Why would YOU pay shipping knowing this? Come on people stand up for yourselves and don't be pushed around by this scrub company that has been making ridiculous excuses to customers calling in for support.
3. Asus does not even know how to fix many of the problems still so what do you expect them to do when you send them your Prime? so far I have been tracking those that RMA nearly a month ago and they STILL do not have theirs back and have been told they will have to wait another 20+ days because they don't have the parts to fix them.
P.S
If you are one of the poor souls waiting around for a serial # or ICS lockup fix shame on you for wasting your time Gary is just a messenger and does not have any answers and the way Asus is going with this whole launch I do not expect it to get any better anytime soon and you don't want to miss your chance to return your Prime,
the biggest reason people RMA'd their primes initially is most likely due to supply issues, many stores don't have a replacement device available for exchange, and if it's returned, there's no clear date on when one would get a replacement.
i replaced mine at gamestop but it took a couple weeks to get it all done.
i do agree that with obvious QC issues, asus should offer to pay for shipping both ways, since it's not easy for someone to get a replacement via their retailer.

I agree with this totally, I went the RMA way and return window is gone. Luckily thru a series of unfortunate events my was replaced early with a new model and only took 3 weeks to do it.

Good point. However, you're contradicting yourself here imo.
Amazon just got more (64GB, grey) in stock this morning. I called right away to exchange mine (dead GPS) and I'll have one from their latest batch tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed for a good one!
Why RMA? Because sometimes it's better to fix one problem than risk getting two from a new one.
Plus everyone's RMA has not been a bad experience. Some received their prime pretty fast also. I'd say only do an RMA if it truly warrants one. Not sending it in for some simple reason like my browser is running slow..lmao
So, Asus and I have been going back and forth since December 26th. It started when the charging cable that I received was defective. I simply called them and asked for a replacement, and the troubles started there. It started by them wanting me to pay to send them the cable, because "my warranty only covers one way shipping." That's simply ridiculous, as the product was defective out of the box. I went back and forth with them about that for weeks.
After those two weeks or so (with my charging cable still not replaced), I realized that my Prime had extremely poor wifi and GPS performance, as many others have complained, and my screen was bleeding in two places. Once again, I called Asus and they started to give in and decided to give me a shipping label for my charging cable. I then brought up the poor WIFI, GPS and screen problems, so they told me to send the whole unit in for service.
I sent my Prime in and they had it for two weeks. After those two weeks, it was shipped and I was happy. When I received the Prime again, I noticed a brand new charging cable and charger. I took the Prime out of the box, booted it, and they fixed nothing on the tablet at all. Still poor WIFI, still no GPS and the screen still was bleeding.
I immediately called Asus, they apologized, and sent me a shipping label again. I shipped the tablet out the next morning. The tablet was received and at their repair facility with the status "Waiting on internal advise." That was fine and dandy, until two weeks later it was still at that status. I called them and they told me they escalated my repair, and I would be contacted soon.
A week passed and no one contacted me. I called again, they told me the same thing. So, yesterday I called and threw a fit to both Asus and Best Buy, and Asus had no clue what was going on, and Best Buy told me to get my unrepaired tablet sent back to me and they would handle it. I called Asus once more, and they told me someone tried to contact me and to check my email. I checked my email, and I received this from their corporate office:
Dear Valued Customer,
We have your ASUS TF201 in repair process. We apologize for the delay in service and the inconvenience this may have caused you. Due to non-availability of the replacement parts or units up to this time, we would like to offer you an option to buy back the unit for the full price based on the purchase invoice. If you accept this refund please provide a copy of the invoice in PDF or JPG format and attach to this email. This will also require the return of all accessories to the address provided below. Once these are received we will process and mail a check to you. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

I replied that I bought a third party warranty (SquareTrade) and a docking station, both of which were useless at this point, and asked if I would be receiving a refund on those too. An hour later, I received a reply with them saying that I will be refunded for the tablet, the dock, the warranty and any other accessories that were bought for the tablet. I emailed them my proof of purchase about an hour ago, and am waiting for my check.
Needless to say, I won. I absolutely despise Asus now. I have one of their desktops, I love it, and one of their OG Transformers which I've never had a problem with. From now on, I'm staying away from Asus products.
Does anyone have an recommendations as to what tablet should be my next purchase? I want something comparable to the Prime, but I'm staying away from Asus at all costs. I'm in no rush to purchase another tablet, so if anyone knows of anything coming out that would be equal or better, let me know please.
cool story bro

I think yours is the first case where Asus voluntarily offered to buy a Prime back. It's odd that they didn't offer to send you a new one; they've done that a couple of times. I wonder if some type of buy back program is part of Gary's "big announcment."

The Acer A510's going up for pre-sale in the next couple of days for $449. It's discussed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522707&page=6
NewEgg also has the G-Tab 16GB and 32GB refurbs on sale for $276/361 and it would be a decent tablet to hold you over until later in the year when there are more next-gen choices available. The G-Tab has a great dev community.

Really bro, I dont see this as "winning"...
The only thing I want them to do is to give me a working product, I wanted a cool working Android Tablet with Tegra3. If I had wanted the money in my wallet, I wouldn't have bought it.
I am so pissed off, I bought it because I was about to travel to Argentina for a few months, I never thought that I would be here sitting right beside the router to have WiFi or renting cars with GPS units because of the crappy internals. And I have no chance of getting a refund here...
I wouldn't say he won, but justice has been served at the least.
Here I am with a defective tablet as far as WiFi/GPS goes and while I could try to get a refund for it, I want a tablet in my possession and for the moment, this is the BEST tablet on the market in my eyes. It's just unfortunate that ASUS isn't living up to the quality as a manufacturer that I've previously known them to be.
So while I'm happy with being the owner of MY tablet, I know that's not going to last given ASUS's upcoming products that will place the Prime in certain obsolescence.
At the very least, other owners who are not happy with their Primes are being given the option to review their purchase.
OP, I'm glad you got your money back, and really appreciate the info
but it's not really winning because of what another commenter said
getting rid of the tablet is not success, getting one that actually works is.
One angle I've been looking at recently, Asus employees have it pretty bad right now. Asus has dumped hastily built hardware in the market, and made their lives much ****tier. That maybe explains the sudden buy back

The only thing I wanted in the end was a functioning quad core (at the minimum) tablet and something that I know would last me a while and be happy with. Sadly, I can't get that from Asus. I classify it as winning simply because I can now wash my hands of Asus and get a newer and better tablet when they come out and hopefully deal with a company who can support their product.

Honestly, I'm not happy about the fact that I no longer have a tablet. Though, two months without a tablet and a week or so with one, didn't really make me too attached to it. I am in no rush to get another tablet. I'm going to be playing the waiting game until something that impresses me comes out.

Honestly, I would have settled for a working tablet if I knew it would've lasted me a few years. The fact that Asus has about the worst service I've dealt with, I'm happy to wash my hands with them. I'd say I won in that aspect.
I take great care of my tech toys...especially my Prime. But yesterday when I dropped my Transformer on the concrete, I realized anything can happen. It was in my neoprene carrying case with the keyboard attached, and it fell onto one of it's corners nice and solid. I knew for sure something happened, was hoping for just a minor dented corner, but I knew from all the stories here that the screen would be cracked. After 10 mins of growing enough balls to do it, I unzipped the case and checked it out. It is %100 fine...physically and internally!
So I'm going with SquareTrade. I'm rooted and unlocked, and flash custom ROMS/ kernels also, so as far as Asus is concerned I'm an outcast.
Has anyone had any experience with SquareTrade?
I know they're highly recommended and reliable, but I've never heard of anyone actually using it.
Will they just pay me for it because they can't find any Primes or parts for it?
Do they just send it to Asus anyway?
I would hope they cover bricks, but I'm not sure.
Do you have 30 days or 90 days to purchase? I've heard both.
Thanks guys...

Voiding your warranty by unlocking it is a grey area. The language in their policy specifically excludes user induced damage related to non-standard h/w and s/w. I don't know if any one here has tested it yet by trying to get reimbursed for a "brick."

Very interesting...thanks. So I have to come out of pocket to Asus, then eventually get reimbursed by SquareTrade? That sucks. I've heard of Prime repairs costing almost as much as a new one.
And by it going to Asus, it would be more likely that it would be detected as a brick with modified software etc...definite grey area. I'm actually considering just getting rid of it while it's still in perfect working condition and holding off for the Infinity. It just seems like even if not by me, somethings gonna give. Screen muras, the mysterious cracked glass from the dock, etc.
Got some thinking to do.
Before I unlocked and got square trade I called them and specifically asked about SOFTWARE unlocking, and say I accidentally dropped it. They said they will cover it, they just stressed to me I can't be opening it physically.
I just purchased the Square Trade warranty for my Transformer Prime yesterday.
I'm usually not interested in an extended warranty from Best Buy or other retailers. I figure they've done the analysis, and if they paid out more then they took in, they certainly wouldn't be pushing extended warranties.
However, if my Prime were to get damaged, I think I'd want to replace it, and at $500 or so, I really would NOT want to have to come out of pocket again.
Also, the reviews on Square Trade are excellent! Very good user experiences when needing to have a device repaired, or, if it's no longer repairable or replaceable, Square Trade seems to refund your purchase price in full!
FYI: I called Square Trade before buying the extended warranty, and asked the salesperson for a discount code. She offered me 10% code, I told her I've seen numerous codes that provided 30% off... she ended up giving me a code that was good for 20% off.
I am currently in the process of having mine repaired through them. I set up a claim online, they sent me a box, it is going to a repair facility in Pennsylvania, they never asked me to send it t o ASUS. They should recieve it today, then they will assess the condition of the unit.
Just had a DroidX repaired by Square Trade. They gave me a pre-paid shipping label (two days) repaired the unit, and had it back in my hands exactly one week later. (I shipped on a Monday, received it back on a Monday.)
I am very impressed...and glad I have a SquareTrade warranty on my Prime.

That is fantastic to hear, having just dropped a few bucks on a Square Trade warranty!
Thanks for the info!
FWIW, I've had SquareTrade repair my step-kid's S-OFF'd & rooted Aria multiple times and they have never given me grief because it was unlocked. Although they did return it once after fixing a broken screen with a screenshot showing the Superuser app installed and circled in red. Not sure what they were trying to say there, but it was repaired nonetheless.

Haha that's great. That's what I wanted to hear.
I bought a sqauretrade warranty a few weeks ago, I insured my tfp for $700 for the tablet and the dock, but since I didn't buy a bundle they only insure the tablet for $535, they offered me a 30 dollar keyboard dock warranty but I doubt my dock will break before my tablet so I will cut my loses when I upgrade.
Anyone want to give me some insurance fraud tips for when I plan to upgrade so they don't replace it with another TFP? I was thinking about throwing it in the pool and making sure it hit the deck first so they can't fix it lol.

Go do some work on your roof with music playing on tablet. Then accidently slip it off with the hammer and all the other tools following it. That should do it.

Can you please keep me posted on what happens? I'm going to get a policy this weekend, but I'd still like to know what to expect should something happen. Also can I ask what was in need of repair? Thanks

That's very good news...thanks for asking about unlocking
I'm buying a policy tomorrow, because I dropped my Prime TWICE in 5 days! I've never done that to any electronics I've ever had, and most likely once I get a policy I will never drop it again
But it was docked and closed and in a neoprene carrying case, and by some miracle, nothing happened.
Thanks again for the info

Pretty sure there's a deductible for cell phones only, and I thought it was 90 days for tablets?

I sent my tf201 in for an RMA at the beginning of the month because the screen had started to separate, and made a horrible creaking sound whenever I picked it up. So it got back to me a week later (good turn-around time)... just to find the touch screen itself not functioning correctly. Worse yet, that creaking sound was not only still there, but now a new even louder sound was coming from the top right hand side, which when pressed caused a light-bleed like effect on the screen near the bezel. So not only was the touch screen not responding to touch, but the screen itself was not even placed on correctly or something worse had occurred. I rma'd it again a couple days later (about a week ago), and now they have my tablet listed as CID (customer induced damage ). The service center of course could give me no further information... and I am terrified after spending $680 on the tablet and dock (with taxes), that now I am going to get set back another 200$. Anyone else have a similar story with Asus RMA? I have read a few threads about wifi issues and the like, but to have the tablet returned simply not functioning, and then be told it was your fault, seems a bit outrageous.
Even worse RMA service...
I received mine for a "Christmas" gift during the whole initial release backorder problems...
Keyboard Dock only fully recognized about 25-30% of the time. I get the gift receipt for the Dock from the in-laws, go to Best Buy, Best Buy orders me a replacement that shows up about a week later.
Replacement dock has same issues, so I sign up for a VIP account and go to RMA the tablet (since it's now out of return period) through the website. RMA form captcha doesn't work. Keep trying for a week (no time to call between work/school/prepping house to sell) and still doesn't work. Find out later that the captcha is broken on Chrome/Firefox, but only on Mac. Weird.
Finally get RMA in early March. Send tablet to Asus on March 14th, they sign for it on March 19th. They enter it as "received" on March 26th, 9 days on the dock. After a phone call April 2nd, they send it back on April 17th.
I receive it and the keyboard dock works beautifully! I use the dock to do a full wipe/reset, set up all my accounts, etc. I get off work and go to use it in class as just a tablet? I have a 1" wide stripe of dead digitizer at the bottom of the screen (portrait). I e-mail ASUS immediately (Tuesday April 24th) and it is STILL marked as unread in their ticket system as I type this.
Anyone have any tips for getting this elevated? I'm going to try calling the 24-hour line right now... At this point, I want a new unit in my hands to verify it works before I send them back this one.
OS I am sorry to hear about your device, unfortunately I seem to be having a similar issue with mine. It sounds as if there is a faint creaking/popping sound coming specifically from somewhere around the right top(ish) area whenever I handle the device. My fear is that this is a precursor to something worse. I contemplated sending it in to Asus, but after all the horror stories I have read online I am absolutely terrified of letting them handle even such a small and simple issue.
To be absolutely honest, Asus typically manufacturers quality products and the Prime is no exception. However despite their quality products their service seems to be an absolute and utter nightmare. For the amount of money we spend on this product service should be top notch. Sadly enough service is a costly endeavor and repairs don't come cheap. That is no excuse though, and Asus should in all accounts not only fix these problems at their own expense in a quick and timely manner, but they should also release a thoughtful apology for those who have been wronged!
I am still waiting for them to get back with me. The CSR told me it was CID, but I never received any email explaining exactly what they believe I did in the hours I had it between RMAs. They have "escalated" the claim two times now, and I did receive a call from someone saying they would email the service center and ask them to hurry up. I was also politely told if I have further issues, I could write a letter to Asus in California. I now think that was not sarcastic but the only way I might ever see a functioning tablet come out of this.
rvest: good luck...
They finally got me an RMA number after 8 days and covered shipping. Hopeful for the end result, but not holding my breath on the result, though.
Biggest suggestion I can give anyone for an RMA.
DO NOT EMAIL THEM AT ALL ABOUT YOUR PRODUCT. Your support goes much faster and it usually better(In my experience) if you CALL THEM!
Almost...
They finally waved the CID.. not sure what exactly they waved.. but I should have the tablet back on Tuesday according to Fedex.
I still plan to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau over this fiasco. Ridiculously poor customer service, poor support, and I will not have another Asus product again.

I guess it's luck of the draw.. depends on who answers the phone.. most want you off the phone asap because the service company gets paid by the number of calls they take..
