Howdy All!
So We've been Busy yet again
And we are proud to re-release This Tool. Whats new
All New UI that uses the ActionBarSherlock framework to give full Holo theme + Action Bar to devices pre ICS
To support more phones i have had to change the way the app works.
(OLD VERSIONS AVAILABLE IN ATTACHMENTS)
What it does now
1 - Check your phone model and compare it to a list of supported devices.
2 - If you phone is supported you can pick any of the supported CWM versions for you phone.
3 - When you click install it will download the CWM "recovery.tar" to your SD-card .
4 - Build you a "chargemon" file to match you phone.
5 - Take the charger + sh file from within the app.
6 - It then backs all the previous files up to the SD-Card and moves all the files to system as needed.
7 - if there are no problems then it is done and CWM is installed(into system)
Comming Soon
With the new app i am also able to do many new things that were not possible in it's last incarnation
(in no particular order)
1-Click De-Bloating of Stock Firmware
1-Click Enable of Init.d support for locked Bootloaders / Stock Kernels
Few more in the works too
Many more phones
My current plan is to support most Xperia devices
My current plan is to add these soon
X10, X8, Xperia S, U, P, Sola
also if there is no compatibility issues the app does not need to be updated to add phones / recoveries. I can do it all server side.
This App will work with the Sony Xperia porfolio. it will install CWM into the system partition so you can use recovery even with a locked bootloader!
Usage
Launch the Application,
Swipe Between Tabs or Pick Tabs
Let it detect your phones setup
Press Install and CWM will be installed into your system.
To access recovery simply, reboot phone and press any key on boot at the Sony Ericsson logo, when the notification LED turns Blue. or use the "reboot to recovery" button from within the app.

No offense but you may have noticed that this in an app, it works without PC, directly from your phone.
It uses nAa files, exactly like the tools you mentioned. Only it makes it easier. Sorry about that...
So no offense, but please take some time to understand before passing judgement.
No offense.

What you are saying is wrong though so, yeah, maybe sometimes choose to do something else other than posting for the sake of posting. Take a brief walk to the park or listen to some music, to name a few.

Offence aside.
This app requires you to know how to use your phone and thats it.
No need to get your pc talking to your phone in debug mode
this can be quite hard for some ppl especialy if you use pc's at a library or a iCafe ect. or have a PC that has broken bits. or maybe your usb port is broken. i think you get the point.
kindly point me to where these apps do this and i will be more than happy apologise.
Comments like yours are why developers leave phones and never come back. maybe keep that in mind. just saying you know.
i will not reply to any more post of this type as it is not what this forum is about! I Kindly ask that you pm me if you have any more to say so we can keep this thread clean.
Thanks Pvy.

Troubleshooting
[ Troubleshooting ]
if u are completely new to flashtool OR have never used it before PLEASE READ THIS: [FLASHTOOL GUIDE] HOW TO for n00bies
sometimes when flashing SEUS/PCC might interfere with flashtool which will lead to flashtool not able to recognize X10... if u have this problem then exit ALL OTHER running apps like SEUS/PCC antivirus/etc... only then Flashtool will work correctly...
many users have reported that it is best to first install latest SEUS and then use flashtool... this will help Windows get the latest drivers for X10 from SEUS...
seems some users are unable to get correct drivers... u can download them from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193066
users facing the issue "Running uname -r command" follow the instructions here
if u have any other FLASHTOOL specific question u can read thru FlashTool thread
if u are still facing lots of issues u can simply use the prerooted recovery image: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192152

im at the step where iv just flashed the downgrade kernel, shall i wait before turning on then see what youv put and go from there? cant get the timing right between those 2 steps and keep getting stuck on se logo
Yes, just hold on for the instructions.
I have tried twice using the guide in the other thread and neither time did the root work. Both times the phone stayed at the SE logo after flashing kernel and while FlashTool allowed me to root at that stage it doesn't seem to work.
Therefore, I am also waiting to see more info in this guide.
PS- no need to quote everything, especially something massive like the first post!
@doomlord im downloading your flashtool as i used normal flashtool, but still havnt rebooted after flashing kernel dwngrade, what steps shall i taske now?

shall i not reboot my phone for now then?
OK so following this guide confirmed that I did everything right the previous times.
Now I have done it again using the FlashTool in the OP, everything goes as it should but STILL when I reboot at the end everything is normal....
No root, no superuserm it's untouched.
The only difference I noticed is that where the screen shot here shows:
"Installed version of busybox : None"
Mine just shows:
"Installed version of busybox : " (without the word "none")
However, the pushing messages are all there and correct.
My phone also does NOT reboot after rooting and stays on the SE logo. Here I simply removed the battery and waited as instructed.
No idea what I can possibly be doing wrong here.

EDIT: I have now followed the steps again (and precisely as I did the previous 4 times), this time everything has worked and the phone IS rooted.
The only thing I have changed is using a different PC so I think the drivers may have been the problem earlier. Even though FlashTool said it was pushing things to the phone it seemingly was not.

please someone help me update from 1.6 to 2.1

After flashing X10 with generic 2.1 firmware and almost killing phone, I hve finally managed to get my phone back alive by flashing stock branded (orange-uk) rom.
But I am back to 1.6.
How do i get it to 2.1? I cannot find stock orange-uk 2.1 rom anywhere on the web.
I want to unlock the phone for use on another network, but every tool i try to use says 1.6 must be updated to 2.1
I believe SEUS etc will update it to past 2.1 so that is no good.
I have learned from my previous mistake, and know that I cant just flash a generic unbranded 2.1 rom or the phone will not boot.
What is the correct procedure? I have read post afrter post on here and my head is spinning.
Please help.
Thanks.
MK5
I am glad flashing orange firmware has worked i will gladly assist you updating to 2.1 or 2.3?
First of all to avoid any more stress and problems I would recommend a custom ROM based on stock 2.3 if you follow the instructions its idiot proof!
1.install the Sony erriccson flashtool from the following link http://androxyde.github.com/index.html?1365028941000
2. Root your device via flashtool ( the flashtool will prompt you with the entire instructions step by step)
3. first go to settings/development/Usb Debugging and enable
4.connect your phone with the usb cable and let your computer find the drivers
5.once drivers are installed open flashtool 0.9.10.0
6 select advanced/root/force zergush

7. this will root your device and install SU (super user) it will also install XRECOVERY which can be used to install custom roms
8. Unlocking the bootloader! before the next stage there is a warning this will void your warranty with some devices but by doing this it opens much more options in regards to different roms by unlocking the bootloader this will automatically update your phone from 1.6 to 2.3!
you unlock the bootloader by selecting plugins in flashtool once you have succesfully rooted
its simple to do and as long as you stick to the instructions of flashtool it should unlock your bootloader! dont be tempted to unplug your phone while the process is in operation as the phone will restart many times while it completes and it will ask you to plug/unplug/restart in a box on flashtool!
once you have unlocked your bootloader you are able to flash custom kermels will have custom recoveries x recovery and clockwork mod recovery which is arguebly the most used by all custom roms on all phone models on xda
9 if you want a stock based rom i would reccomend Donut HD this is the most stock based rom and can be flashed without unlocking the bootloader it is based on the official 2.3 firmware for the xperia x10i http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574185
10. its very important that you do a backup of your current rom by doing this you can restore the current rom if any errors arise this is done by entering xrecovery by pressing the back button repeatedly as the x10 is booting up then under backup & Restore scroll up and down using the volume up and down and press select by pressing the middle hardware key see below
11. thats it your ready to go
12. download the rom put it on your micro sd card ,enter xrecovery by pressing the back button repeatedly as the x10 is booting up
11. (remember the backup first) factory reset (full Wipe)/wipe cache partition/advanced options/wipe dalvic cache/ wipe battery stats /back/install custom zip/choose custom zip from sdcard/scroll to the downloaded rom and select enter! once installation is complete wipe dalvic cache in advanced options then reboot phone
thats it your custom firmware should be installed ! if you still require to unlock the sim then you can do this after installation

happy flashing

Thank You for this tutorial.
Im going to try again tomorrow (need some sleep now lol)
Just a couple of questions...
1. I am using 0.9.10.1 and not 0.9.10.0 - Is that OK? or should i dl and install the previous version?
2. You said to unlock bootloader via plugins option, but FAQ for flashtool says bootloader plugin will not be visible if current fw is 1.6
3. flashtool is throwing up some java? errors...
04/023/2013 02:23:37 - ERROR - (FlasherGUI.java:2101) - Cannot identify your device.
04/027/2013 02:27:19 - ERROR - (FlasherGUI.java:1620) - The part1 exploit did not work
Let me know what you think?
and Thanks again

I was on orange UK and I updated from 1.6 to 2.1 then to 2.3.3 through the phone and PC companion with no problems what about looking in the settings in the phone then to about phone then software update that's how I did mine then after that used azuzu root method then unlocked bootloader

To my knowledge he has tried update through seus and was stuck on boot loop at the Sony erriccson splash screen I agree a official update through seus or PC companion would be better but he wants to update to 2.1 and PC companion will update it to 2.3

Have you rooted first? Make sure you have your phone and debug is on in developer options
If you are having difficulty rooting then use the other option instead of zurgush in advanced

Ive updated it through both PCC and SEUS and the end result is the same - doesnt boot pst SE writing
Also strange thing is after upating, SEUS says that an update is available? (its like going round in circles)
The 1.6 orange rom that i sucesfully flashed is not the same as the original one (different CDA) but it works
OK im gonna give above tutorial a go now, but still not sure about the 'plugins' bit?
aaargh im having no luck at all with this
Tried OTA update, but it said that i must use computer.
Tried tutorial, but can get it rooted.

Rooting and unlocking bootloader of your xperia

I have come across so many questions about rooting, bootloader and flashing that I decided to give a brief idea what is it all about..
I will use as simple words as possible.
When you buy your phone, you are on STOCK ROM and KERNEL. (its from your mobile manufacturer)
Rom is the system on which phone works (like windows for PC) and KERNEL is programmed code that tells the phone how to function in accordance to the ROM.
ROM & KERNEL can be custom or stock. Customisation helps in running the phone according to our needs.
The STOCK ROM & KERNEL is usually based on all rounder to fit most of the users . However, some of us want more from our phone in terms of battery life, performance, speed etc. However, increase battery may affect your performance but not necessarily. Thus modifications are used which are SPECIFIC for every model. this means you can't use one kernel/Rom for another model USUALLY. This will brick your phone. Some modifications in ROM for one model can help it to be used in another.
You decided to install a custom Rom/Kernel.
Well, the first thing ýou need to do is UNLOCK your bootloader. With unlocked bootloader, you can install all custom and stock Roms without any problem of your specific model. With locked bootloader, ýou might be able to install few custom Roms designed for locked bootloader.
BOOTLOADER is basically a lock in your phone which doesn't allow modifications to your phone by the company. Unlocking bootloader voids your warranty and stops automatic updates of your STOCK ROM. however, you can easily lock your bootloader again any time without company's knowledge and manually install STOCK Updates.
REMEMBER THIS COMES BEFORE ROOTING UNLESS YOU ARE INSTALLING A CUSTOM ROM WHICH IS PRE-ROOTED AND ALLOWS LOCKED BOOTLOADER.
ROOTING
This is basically modification to take over your system. It simply means that some system files which couldn't be modified can be changed. This simply means that now you have complete power of your ROM and hardware. You can change values , overclock your processor or put your hardware in hibernation to increase speed or enforce 3D gaming cards to play HD games which you couldnot play before. Usually apps are used to change these values. You will have SUPER USER OR SUPER SU added in your apps list.
FLASHTOOL :
This tool is from Sony to install ROMS and KERNEL in your Xperia.
This tool is use to install any kind of STOCK version. You can get UK STOCK version, USA Europe etc
ADVANTAGES OF ROOTING
- You get full access to your phone's Hardware and software
- You can Overclock CPU clock speed and make phone faster
- You can Install many mods to improve camera, audio and video playback quality
- You can Install Beats Audio Drivers to enhance audio output
- You can increase speaker / earphone volume using volume hack
- You can Install Custom ROMs and Apps
- You can take the hell out of your device and Improve user experience
Rooting is safe and reversible, You can unroot your phone if you want. It won't void you're warranty etc
SOME ROOT APPS WHICH CAN ENHANCE THE PERFORMANCE
DroidWall
Dual Mount SD Widget
Hexamob Recovery Pro
Keyboard Manager
LEDs Hack
Rot Call Blocker
Samba Filesharing
Titanium Backup
Chainfire 3D ........... gaming and using different Graphic modules to run heavy games
Control CPU.... overclock processor
DISADVANTAGES OF ROOTING
-Chance to brick your device if the wrong software gets flashed. This can be EASILY reversible
-Warranty is void. You can flash STOCK ROM again and no one will have a clue you did that. So it can be reversible.
-Because, after Rooting you give permission (programmes ask, its not default) to softwares. If you give it to a malicious software, it can result in Viruses. FLASHING again can help.
In all honestly, I am using rooted devices for over 2 years and I never had any problem with viruses however, I have bricked my device few times by accident. (I have flashed and rooted almost every one to two weeks and I am just going to do now after writing this )
This is a short synopsis of steps :
1.Unlock bootloader usually done from official website . Just google your phone name with unlock bootloader. For example : UNLOCK BOOTLOADER XPERIA U
Some phones have unlocked bootloaders (Samsung etc)
2.Root your phone , in Sony case, we usually use FLASH TOOL or Binary method.
UNLOCKING BOOTLOADER :
I will give you a rough idea!
Basically, when you buy your phone it is locked from the manufacturer so no changes can be made to the software(STOCK ROM & KERNEL ) and thus this way, they can stop users to modify their software which might result in damage and they do not want to be responsible for that. SO unlocking bootloader voids your warranty. However, this can be reversible.
Usually, you will need fastboot. It is part of SDK manager which is used for Android development.
What you usually do is that you go in CMD in windows (Type that in Run)
Go to the folder where fastboot you have placed. You will need to go in that folder to in CMD Eg. C:/fastboot/
Then you connect your phone in fastboot mode. Eg. Xperia U shows blue light in fastboot mode. It could vary though for other handsets.
The trick to boot into FASTBOOT is, switch off your phone. Then you hold down volume UP key. and while holding the key , you connect your phone to the PC via USB cable.
A BLUE LIGHT WILL TURN ON and this will show you are connected to fastboot.
Then you enter your key, taken from official Sony and unlock your bootloader.
More details here :
http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
If you have any questions or want to know the method, do not hesitate to ask.
I hope this helps!

Cons are simply that your warranty is void however you can still lock your bootloader.
Secondly you can not get updates from Sony. You will need to flash STOCK manually.
That's all the cons for you which are not that of a disadvantage!
Plus, I am on unlocked bootloader. All my apps and games are running smoothly. It depends on the ROM. if you are using a stable rom , you won't have a problem but if you are using a nightly build ROM (with bugs and in testing phase), you can come across such problems!

This is general forum and not for question and answers. However, I will reply
Which device are you using ?
Secondly, usually to go into recovery, restart your phone and when you see the SONY logo start pressing VOLUME DOWN KEY. Either the colour of your LED will change or you will get a vibration. This will take you into recovery.
Also note that if you are on LOCKED bootloader, there is different trick to install recovery and root and if you are on UNLOCKED bootloader, You can easily do both ROOT and RECOVERY by simply flashing a kernel or recovery/Root using cmd with fastboot!
Good luck!
Nice !

Hi, thank you for your post, it still heps in 2015!
As far as I understand, I would rather compare ROM to PC firmware (mostly BIOS) and KERNEL to core services and drivers of Windows (or any other system like Linux which kernel is the base of Android system).
That's all, folks!
hi bro, great guide for noobs like me i just have a question though... can we flash stock rom on custom kernel.... i'm using Experimental Kernal V12 with custom JB rom... i need to go back to Stock ICS... so can i just flash ICS or do i have to flash stock kernel too... i mean would'nt flashing stock kernel will remove precious CWM recovery...

[GUIDE] New Z Ultra Owner

Hi!!
Just got your Xperia Z Ultra and start looking on how to root, unlock your bootloader and do everything you can for start playing with your phone with a maximum of security? You are at the good place!!
First of all, install PC Companion, you just need to plug your phone on the PC and follow instructions on your phone and PC.
To make things clear, I didn't do any of those tools and link the threads where they come from, so if you want to thanks devs do it there. I tried all of them without any problem and I do this thread for help people who know nothing about Sony Android devices or simply want to find everything in one place. They are fully working, so if things go wrong while following explanations this is bad luck, you did something wrong and/or forgot to do something. Neither I nor the Devs can be kept responsible for what you are doing on your device.

Youtube tutorial made by hamdogg
Thanks a lot hamdogg
First tool you need to know when you own a Sony Android device is Flashtool. I invite every owner wishing to root, unlock or mess with your phone to install this program and install Flashtoo-drivers.exe (directory: C:\Flashtool\Drivers\). This tool is a jewel, you can flash any factory firmware, unlock your bootloader and cherry on the cake, make a TA backup, that will backup all your TA partitions including locked bootloader with DRM keys. Keys those are necessary to enable X-Reality and bravia engine.
But to be able to do a TA backup you need first to root your Z Ultra.
- First of all you need to enable USB debugging, you will find it on /Settings/Developer options. For enable Developer options you need to go on /Settings/About phone/ and tap 8 times on Build number.
Mod edit - VRoot links and install guide removed
until such time as the validity of this software can be determined due to some security concerns regarding this application.
- OK, now SuperSu closed by itself and disappeared, no stress it's normal, just restart your phone.
- After full reboot, open supersu again, and it won't ask you for update binary anymore. Just close it.
- Download Titanium Backup Root and open it.
- Just be patient, promt for root access can take time, but it'll come.
Enjoy!!
I just updated from .526 to .532 and done this process and it was successful at the first try. If it doesn't work just try again. It work on any firmware version and country
All is thanks to @nickylou88 for this process.
And if you need more support you can look at this thread you have all information you need inside. The OP introduce another program, but VRoot is the less complicate to use and work as well.
Now you can make a TA backup following the instructions on this post.
Ok, now your phone is rooted, but more important you made a backup of your TA partition. It is important because if you soft brick your phone or wish to restore your bootloader to locked state if you unlocked it now you can.
I am not doing a TA backup tuto as the one on the original thread is more than complet
Here there is the other program that allow you to make a TA backup.
hamdogg provide us a really good Youtube tuto.
[B]Unlock bootloader and Install Recovery[/B]
Sony offer us a way to unlock our boot loader here but we have Flashtool, so why not use it instead? Easy and fast.
-Just click on “BLU” icon next to the flash icon
-Remember how to enter flashmod.
-Remember how to enter fastboot mod
-Click on Get Unlock Code then follow instructions on Sony website
-Enter the Code Sony sent on your email and let the program do.
When done boot your device you are unlocked.
Now it is time to flash Recovery. For do so you need to have adb and fastboot on your PC, all the information you need for install it and more can be find Here.
Another Youtube tuto from hamdogg
To flash recovery you need to put advanced stock kernel v5.img to “C:\SDK ANdroid\sdk\platform-tools\” then type :
Code:
fastboot flash boot C:\SDK ANdroid\sdk\platform-tools\advanced stock kernel v5.img
Reboot your phone to system a first time then turn it off.
To enter CMW:
-Turn on your phone as usually
-On Sony boot Screen look when the led turn purple push volume up
-Enjoy CMW
To enter TWRP:
-Turn on your phone as usually
-On Sony boot screen look when the led turn purple push volume down
-Enjoy TWRP
[B] Flash or update a firmware from another country [/B]
While looking on the forum it is possible for you to find someone posting the latest firmware, but when you plug your phone on your PC and look for update with PC Companion it tell you have the latest firmware. It simply because the firmware came out first on another country, you can simply wait for it to come in your country. If you don't want to wait you have 2 possibilities.
- Download the .ftf and flash it via Flashtool
Follow step by step this post
- Modify your CDA code on your build.prop but need to be rooted
Open build.prop with any explorer with root permission (I use root explorer) and modify the following values with the values you need:
Reboot your phone then plug it to your PC and update with PC Companion.

YEs, you do not lose it. Nobody using this tool loosed it. It doesn't touch at your TA partitions. After rooting if you are really that much concerned about your DRM keys you can make a TA backup. SuperSU is an application so it doesn't require anything from the bootloader.

A. like mentioned in the FA Question above its the program that starts your system now with android the kernel is contained within the bootloader where as just the bootmanager which would be a PC, your bootloader is locked by a sort of verifacation system so when you remove of that it doesent verify or when it does it doesnt have anything to copare it to, that is unlocking your bootloader ( or what ive been told )
Q. Can i install a custom kernel on a locked bootloader?
A. not at all! dont even try it either, it will brick your xperia!
Q. What do you mean brick your device?

- Unlocking your bootloader
Unlocking your bootloader is the allows custom kernels to be installed. it apears only X-Reality is broken along with Few Xperia Services Such as PlayStation Remote Play.
Unlocking your bootloader does wipe your TA partition and also your data and internal storage
Take note that Unlocking your bootloader will void your warrenty. some services do not care if your bootloaders are relock however some check if your DRM keys are existent.
Any modifacation to your device will imediately void your 2 year warrenty that comes with all Xperias given that you have proof of purchase.
-- How to unlock your bootloader
you can follow these instructions

Can Philz recovery be used instead of the standard CWM one? I know DoomLord made a thread saying it had been ported over unofficially but there hasn't really been any posts in that thread since 30th May. Philz recovery was always my fav to use on my GS3. Ideally I would like to flash Philz recovery & just keep the stock rom & kernel & root to block ads & change DPI & also use MyBackup Pro to it's full potential.
Thanks for posting all the info in one centralised thread though

Do you mean "no, kernels are device specific" or that no kernel is device specific, meaning you can use kernels made for Z2 and the Z2 tablet?

Oh grammar, kernels are device spesific aka Z2 kernel only works on Z2 and not tablet although they are almost the same on the inside
Time to update the thread thanks for pointing that out

Great info! Reckon you could also add, like, a section with obscure/hidden general productivity tips for the phone as well?
For example:
If you press and hold the right-hand side of the notification bar, it will change to quick settings allowing you to then swipe down for the quick settings.
From the home page, if you swipe from the very edge of a side of the screen, you can scroll 2 pages at once.
Etc.
@PulpDood
If you could write a post here with a list of secret features ill add to the index of the thread
Here is one for you
Press the page indicators to quickly scroll across pages in your home screen
Thanks if you do, credits to you
Edit-ill do later

Screen rotation
Not sure if this is for on here or not but is it possible to have the screen rotation for the stock launcher on all the time and not just when a magnetic charger is connected? (I know other launchers are available)

It seems there is a bug when you force rotate however ive found a soution. The problem is that you need root
You need to download and install
Xposed installer
Xperia rotation and multiline lables (this is the module name btw)
Gravity box(KK) can be used to rotate the lockscreen of which this require xposed too
Hope this helps

Thanks, disappointing I have to root. I like to use stock for a while before I start to tamper with it
Actually thought I wouldn't need to root this as all I used root for was greenify but stamina mode seems to have better results.
Edit - found an app seems to work https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spydiko.rotationmanager
Thanks again
I have already spammed the thanks button for you mate in this thread but your great simple guide now has my bootloader unlocked & rooted & booted as they say
Does yourself or anyone else knowa good app to edit the DPI to a setting that wont cause issues with play store or apps or games or what would be the best setting to use for editing the build prop file? I know the default is about 480 Previous device was galaxy s3 which by default was 320 but I always changed it to 240 or 245.

I usualy use xplore, you have to enable superuser in the settings but the app is functional enough for file management
Default DPI is 480, some people said 460 n stuff like that is a nicer dpi to use, hvnt realy tried my self
Edit- you also have to give credit to the ppl who wrote the other threads who i liked here
