Vibrant will not charge - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Vibrant was running perfect and all of a sudden it will not charge through ANY wall charger only through my computer. Replaced the battery but it still will not charge. Any ideas? I was running ICS passion but reflashed Phiremod and MIUI thinking it was from related but still no go. ICS WA running perfect for two weeks and then no charge! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Same USB cable As you use for charger?

Hm, I'd suggest flashing back to stock and seeing if the issue is still there.
Also, as hololight posted above me, it might be the cable.

I am having a similar problem. When I try to charge it I constantly have to wiggle the cord so that it will charge. If it isn't exactly right the battery will drain instead of charge. It is a real pain in the ass.

I've had this happen to me before -- My phone would only charge when connected to a computer, but not to an outlet...I actually ended up buying a new cord, and the problem ceased. (The old cord still wouldn't allow outlet charging -- the new one did) weird issue.
Good luck with finding a solution!

I've tried 3 different cords on mine and it still does the same thing. I think it might be the mini USB port on the top of the phone.

Been at work
Thanks for all the replies. I have tried about three different cables as well. I have not gone back to stock as I do not have a PC to use odin. You cant do it on a mac, can you? Also I was going to try just going back to a 2.2 rom but since I have been using gingerbread roms when I flash in recovery it will not do it. Thanks for all the help. I hope its not hardware related as I was just about to sell it to upgrade and now it wont charge!!

Coming from ics out miui or cm7 you have to odin. Use hemidall on a mac does the same thing

Maybe i am dumb but I cannot seem to find the right files to revert back to stock using heimdall. I downloaded from samfirmware and every time I input them into heimdall it says missing xml something. I have tried many things. Maybe I downloaded the wrong heimdall (frontend) but it just wont ever get me to a point where I can flash.

Heimdall is very different from using Odin. I use Heimdall on Ubuntu. Here is a very good post on using Heimdall and it explains the files that it needs. You have to unzip the file you would normally use in Odin and link Heimdall to them individually.
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/flashing-with-heimdall.2414/
Hope this helps.

I have the same issue. Took it back to stock, did everything possible new bat new cord, new sim. I was on ICS PASSION 10.6 and Eugenes kernel. I now have a 4 g vib complement of an extended warranty. If you want to play there may be a price to pay. Sorry thats all I can offer in way of help, good luck.

Thanks for all the help guys! I finally got it back to stock and it seems as it is starting to charge now. Heimdall front end never worked I think its some kind of compatibility issue with Lion for Mac. I did it using heimdall through Terminal. I actually bricked my vibrant and brought it back with one click unbrick. I then flashed each individual file from the firmware through Terminal. Went to destination folder then heimdall flash --factoryfs factoryfs.rfs and so on... Thanks for all the help.

Spoke too soon...
I spoke prematurely! Now it will not charge through the wall charger!! I thought it was hardware but why does it charge through the computer????? If it was hardware it should not charge at all, right??? Software wise I flashed back to stock so why wont it charge???

This is making me think it is a problem with the wall part of the charger.
Are you using the plug that came with the phone? I have that one and two others, 1 from Motorola and another from BrandXfrom who knows where. The original Sammy works great, the Motorola one takes longer and the BrandX sometimes doesn't even register as plugged in.
If you plug into computer and it works, then you can rule out the USB cord, which harks to the wall plug I am betting.

yeah i have tried three different charger. My Mytouch 4G charger, new Galaxy S 2 charger, and my original Vibrant one. I have no clue. It will not charge through the outlet. I will try cleaning the USB port although if that were the case it would not charge at all. I will keep trying to figure it out. Thanks for all the help.

Same issue. I flashed my Vibrabt T959 with MIUI (JB), MIUI (ICS), Passion ICS (nice rom) but doesn't charge or at least I think it didn't. I left it plugged in to my AC charger and came back an hour later.... WOW! charged up. Not sure whats going on but no animated battery icon of charging status on lock screen.
-I tried sevaral chargers. In one occation I had to wiggle the cord for it to charge.
-Does not charge with my car USB charger (possible cord issue?). Have not tried my AC cord.
-I downloaded a battery app to verify if it charging... So I ahve to open the app to verify (PIDA).
EDIT
I found these MIUI GB rom which do show the phone charging but has the GPS issue.

Cant charge my phone!! Help plz...

Hello,
Maybe u guys can help me?? I have bionix 1.3.1 and tigers blood kernel and ginger red theme but i had over stock kernel before. In the beginning when i first installed my rom i would hook it up to my pc or a wall outlet it would recognize my phone and it would charge. But lately when ever i plug it into wall outlet or to my pc it wont charge and the only way it will charge is if i reboot while its plugged in. Then when it comes back on it starts to charge, weird huh???? Does anyone know how to fix this? CAN Someone Plz help me???
TY so much for ur help!
thats odd. I havent run both in unison but i know they both werk with no probs respectively. Which versions are you running? Bionix1.3.1? Tigerbloodv3?.... maybe try a reflash? i'm charging my phone atm if no one else replies in an hour i'll flash them both for ya and post my results, but im thinking its prob gonna be a simple reflash or redownload fix kinda thing at this point Bionix and Tigersblood are proven game winners and DD's. good luck!

Cant reproduce problem
I flashed back to Bionix1.3.1 yesterday flashed Tigersbloodv3 on top of it. Ran it all day plugged into my PC with no problems of charging or internal/external mount to PC. Everything werked perfectly for me all day. Flashed theme Mortalkombat SubZero ontop and plugged into wall outlet charged all night with no problems here.
I'll keep running it to see if anything pops up.
- How long was it till you started having charge isues?
- Have you tried reflash?(prob fix it)
- Have you tried redownload?(prob fix it)
- Have you tried another theme since?(maybe its a theme issue{unlikely})
good luck!
did you fix?

the battery pull didnt work, but im gonna try to reflash my rom and another theme to see if that fixes it. Ty guys for ur help very much appreciated.
you can also buy a separate wall charger. i dont charge any phones through the pc for some reason i always liked and preferred to have a wall charger and it seems to be faster as well.
I agree about wall charger. Get an extra batt too then u can always have a batt with 100% and flash away.
lets us know how it goes. Good luck!

I am having the exact same problem, the phone wouldn't charge unless I reboot it, then it would work for a little bit. After a short while, the phone wouldn't charge again when I have it plugged in. I tried wall charger, car charger, USB, nothing would get the phone to charge except to reboot. I am running Trigger 3.2, tried reflash it several times, but the problem wouldn't go away.
did you return the phone for an exchange?

[Q] Vibrant not charging.

Alright so my Vibrant won't charge. I JUST recovered my phone from a brick, (I was having issues with the battery life on Slim Roms 4.0 compared to 3.9--in the middle of flashing back I accidently wiped my internal memory. As I was recovering it using Odin, my fat cat jumped on my bed and caught on my phone cord bricking it.) Flashed using Heimdall and was able to get my phone into working order.
Now, I placed Slim Roms 4.0 back on my phone initially after the unbricking to have something working on it, even though the battery life less than impressed me.
So I charged it like normal yesterday, got it to 100% and was fine and dandy with it working. (Still sucking up battery life like a vampire in a fat camp.)
So the update 4.1 went live yesterday, I flashed it immediately to that. The battery life was amazing! So I do the normal thing when I flash to a new ROM. Let it die completely before charging it completely. It's now dead and will not charge.
Symptoms;
I plugged in my normal cable for work (a cheap cable I purchased off of Ebay.) And up comes the round loading symbol. Followed by a darkening of the screen, followed by nothing.
One thing to note, is while it has it's loading circle on, the bottom buttons light up when I touch them.
My Steps;
-I attempted different USB ports since I charge through my work computer. No luck.
-I "borrowed" my co-workers USB cord and USB to wall plug. Attempted the new cable in the computer first. No luck.
-Plugged the borrowed USB into the wall charger. Same thing happens.
-Used my own cheapy cable in wall charger. Same thing.
-Took co-workers complete set and plugged it in in a different room. Nothing.
-Took out my battery, plugged in USB, placed battery back in. Nothing.
-Hold down the Vibrant buttons to get into Bootloader, it resets the loading circle and nothing more.
So now I'm sitting here wondering what to do. I do not have rubbing alcohol readily available, however since it charged to 100% yesterday I do not believe that is the issue, but I'd be willing to try if I had access.
Something you should know, I am using a Samsung Epic 4G battery in my phone.
-For those who might judge saying it is dumb, I have gotten 54 hours out of that battery on one ROM before, that is with texting, talking on the phone and installing apps. I'm fond of this thing, however I have my stock battery at home still.-
Any suggestions you guys have would be appreciated. I have tried things that I found on this forum and basic tech support to no avail. (I am at work so the things I can use are fairly limited. However cords are of no shortage.)
Alright, I unplugged my phone from being plugged into the wall charger for an hour and 3 minutes later it decides to turn itself on.. Not sure what's going on but I'm not going to complain.
So my question now is, can anyone explain this or help prevent this in the future?
From what I've heard draining a battery until it dies can damage it. But, I'm not an expert on that. It's possible that the battery needed more time to recover from the drain.

I had something similar happen when running lithium volt ROM. My battery completely died and the phone cut off (obviously.) I plugged it in the charger and it immediately tried to boot the phone up but it was bootlooping at the startup screen. I let it sit there for 20 minutes or so thinking maybe it is charging but as soon as i unplug the charger the phone cut off. Luckily I have an extra battery, popped it in, flashed a new ROM thinking that was the problem, turns out it was something to do with the ROM(maybe it needed a certain amount of battery power to boot up). My completely dead battery worked on the cm7 ROM I flashed, plugged in the charger and it booted up normally and started charging.

Thank you. I might just have to downgrade back to 3.9. It's almost a shame. xD
I'm going to test my old battery in this ROM just to make sure before I downgrade.
You need to use your Samsung usb charger, and wall adapter only. These two are the only ones that will actually work. I had this same problem and realized it was because I wasn't using the Samsung stuff. Even when pugging into the computer, use the Samsung USB cabe only. As for the battery your using... I wouldn't recommend it, no matter the fantastic battery life you must be getting.

Thank you about the cable, I need to purchase another one anyways, mine at home seems to not be connecting very well. :/
ROM. some roms do that. it will not let you power up while charging if the battery is very low. you will get the circle and the battery symbol after. sometimes you still cant unless you pull the battery. happened to me many times

[Q] Very slow charging galaxy s3

Hi,
Since 1 week now I have some huge difficulties to charge my GS3. For exemple when I plug it before going to sleep, in the morning there is only 50%. Sometimes I plug it and it stop the charge itself (not at 100%), i have to move the cable a little to continue the charge.
I tried several cable and plugs, nothing change.
Does anybody experienced this? What can I do?
Ps : I already read this post but I didn't find any answer.
Thx
I presume you charged the phone through the AC power? I had similar issue prior which was resolved once I wiped my Battery Stats. Is your phone rooted?
yes my phone is rooter I have omega V35 ROM and i already tried to wipe the battery stats and nothing changed
Im sure you have also clear cache, wipe, reflash the ROM? Its highly unlikely that all of your chargers are malfunctioning, If the phone is still within the warranty period, it may be time for you to visit Samsung Service Centre (SSC)...but unroot first!

no i didn't tried to reflash the ROM cause it was working great with this ROM before, I contacted samsung and they will repare it but i need to find the bill first. Is it really necessary to unroot the phone? Installing a stock ROM is good or is there something else to do to unroot it?

unrooting is in reference to returing to stock ROM. SSC will invalid warranties to rooted phones.
i just reflash the ROM and the phone is still very slow to charge.
I will send back to samsung i think.
i just installed the Omage ROM V38 and i still have the problem, you can look at this graph :
Take battery out for 10 minutes. Plug back in and see. If not possibly battery port issue, my wife's had to be sent back for it.

So different USB cables didn't helped? That usually does the trick. Other than that try kernel such as yank kernel which allows fast charging option.

First flash STOCK ROM and see what's gonna happen.
If the problem still persists, send your phone for service.
Make sure there are no signs of custom ROMs and Kernels.
Solution is the CABLE
Here is a confirmation of the solution from Turkey: It IS the CABLE...
Check the cable end that goes into the S3, if you see 5 places but with only 4 wires, it charges VERY slowly... However, I used a $5 charger which had 5 wires in the end that goes into galaxy S3 and voila!

My stock Samsung cable has those 4 connections instead of, what looks like the 5 that can fit in. And it charges so slowly!
9/10 its the cable. I don't know bout what is said above. Mine charged fast then suddenly started charging slowly. It was to do with the kernels usb charger stability detection.
Changed cable and all good

So if I install stock Android, will that change the kernal and therefore fix the issue?
I don't see why I should have to pay and wait for a new cable, even if it's only a few quid and a few days :/

All Samsung kernels have the detection. Whether changing the kernel or cable fixes it or not is not knowable.
all you can do is try. can you not borrow a cable to test it? Surely you know someone with a cable?
yes, mine s3 to does charge slow i have the Purelook HD rom please help, take my phone on charger from 4& next morning about 50- 60 & only charged!!
I have a similar issue here, although my problem only started with latest arhd 25.0 Rom, never had this with previous roms of arhd....some times the charge is very fast , then next time it will charge to 19% then stop, then next time it's fast then will be very slow... very intermittent, I have changed chargers. Still same results, going to try wipe the battery stats to see if that helps.

Phone acting weird.

Recently ive been getting this thing that my phone wont charge on an AC charger straight away.
I have to plug it in my PCs usb cable, then plug it in AC so it will charge i have tried 3 different AC chargers , all Samsungs original ones!
It stopped doing this for a cople of weeks then started again.. ive also tried a couple of roms but the rom doesnt seem to be an issue.. Atn im running NeatROM 4.2 with the stock PhilZ kernel.
Any ideas??

Clean install of stock in the first instance to rule in/out hardware issues. If it happens with a clean install of stock as well; Clean USB port, then replace USB port/flex cable, then return to service centre as probably issue with charging/USB circuitry if the first two don't help.
Okay, ill try an Stock install when i have time.. service center is not an option since i bought it used and doesnt have an warranty anymore.. if i cant get it fix i think ill sell it and let someone else deal with the issue, lol

Might want to check battery stuff as well while you're at it; clean the contacts in the phone/on the battery, maybe try another battery depending on how keen you are. Given how long the phone has been out, original batteries should be starting to die off in their droves right about now (and earlier if you charge/discharge a lot).

[Q] USB connection + stock bootloop

Hi Guys I've looked at loads of other related posts for this but nothing seems to be the same as mine, let me try and give you a bit of background on this it wont be perfect as it is my sisters phone and she doesn't know anything. my sister left her original charger at her boyfriends and therefore had to use a cheaper non-stock one she had. Every-time she used it her phone would play up do things like open the car mode and keep rebooting, she didn't think much of it and used it anyway. Her phone died (ran out of battery) one evening and she used the strange charger to charge her phone overnight this however seems to have caused issues since then it wont boot it goes past the Samsung boot screen then the o2 boot screen then just repeats (sounds like a boot loop) note the phone has never been rooted and is still 100% stock.
So this is the issue I figured using ODIN and flashing the stock firmware would fix the issue but I cannot for the life of me get the phone to pick up on ANY computer at all I've tried different charger cables, different computers, Different OS's, cleaning the port and pretty much everything else the internet has currently had to offer. I really am at a loss here I cant use recovery as its not rooted I cant use something like Kies Air or mobile odin as I cant boot into the room and using ODIN is im unable to connect to any computers.
So I guys I'm reaching out to you here what can I do to fix this I really need some advice
Thanks in advance.

Oh and her battery must be dead because of the charger.
Usb port could also be busted.

Do you think there is anything else I can try I don't want to jump directly into replacing parts/handset.
If it's a hardware fault, not much while you can do other than change the part. The part itself is cheap, isn't even hard to swap it out
