[Q] wifi speeds are so slow - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Anyone else having an issue with slow WiFi on your prime?
As a reference my sgs2 and galaxy tab 10.1 get steady 25 up and 25 down every time i run speedtest.net or use the app. It seems that the prime will not get better than 3 to 5 megs up and down?!? I hope someone out there has some info on this issue or mine is going back. :-(

Really? Sheesh, there's about 4 topics on the first page in the general section of this forum (so no, you're not the only one).

The upgrade to ICS - results and impressions

Hey guys,
it's me and my german Prime again. I want to share some of my impressions and findings with the ICS upgrade after some days of use.
First lets think again about the issues I had with HC:
Wifi range was worse than other devices (speed was way better btw)
HDMI screen mirroring was cut at the bottom
HDMI audio was only on the left channel
GPS not working at all (barely one single satellite)
Boottimes were horribly long (2 minutes or longer)
Bluetooth + Wifi lead to massive bandwidth drops
Touchpad was kinda crappy (two finger scrolling in mouse mode)
Okay, all these issues weren't really any kind of deal breaker for me, I really enjoyed my Prime since the .33 update (before the .33 the touchscreen really sucked)
I got (as I expected) my update somewhere around 8 PM PST on January 11.
The updated installed without any problems in about 10 minutes.
After ICS booted up I did a full wipe to ensure I have as less problems as possible.
Now lets talk again about the pre-ICS issues:
Wifi: Pre-ICS I was not able to connect to my home network due to the Prime not seeing it all. (Range issue)
This is now fixed with ICS. So in fact this means the Wifi range is better now (at least for me). The connection is also a bit more stable.
Both HDMI errors are gone now. Playing 720p and 1080p mkv files with DTS or AC3 sound works perfectly with Diceplayer.
Not a single issue anymore
Touchpad performance is way better now.
I can actually use the mouse mode now for scrolling etc. Nice!
Boottime almost halfed for me. It boots up way faster now.
Wasn't a big issue before, but nice to see they are making improvements here.
As several member here pointed out, the Bluetooth Wifi issue is not a Prime specific issue.
Every single other device I tested had exactly the same problem. No matter if a Desire, Desire HD, Lumia 800, even my Laptop to some extend...
So this "issue" is a non issue for me.
Now to the GPS part: (Please note that this issue is a non issue for me too, I don't care for my tablets GPS, it's only that I want everything to work).
It's actually too cold outside to test the GPS more than two minutes, but after this time I still can't see a single satellite...
So far I never had any kind of GPS lock with my Prime. I am not sure if it just needs more time...
I will test that later.
I tested the GPS for several hours now (actually I just put the thing outside under clear sky and let it rest there for some hours)
It searched constantly for GPS satellites using the "GPS Status" app and didn't find a single satellite. Not even one.
The only reason why I think I don't have a broken GPS chip/antenna is that I saw one satellite back in HC times...
Since then not a single satellite anymore. (Wifi on/off didn't make any difference btw)
As said above, I don't really care, so this totally faulty GPS (it really just doesn't show anything) is a really good point to return it some time later to get maybe a completely new one
I've found also several non-issue related things:
ICS just looks beautiful
Damn ICS is fast! Everything is just that important bit faster than HC. (not that HC was really slow, but ICS is just noticable faster)
The ASUS taskmanager widget just does not work at all.
It just shuts down as soon as you add it to your homescreen. That's a bit embarassing
Some other facts and information:
Do you know about the "Deactivate app" feature? (Settings->Apps->Click on single app) It's awesome!
You can deactivate (like freeze in titanium) almost every app on the prime. Even the system apps.
I deativated quite a bunch of them (about 20) and the system feels even faster now
I just tested my PS3 controller on the Prime. The native (via USB cable) support works quite well for GTA3 or Shadowgun.
Unfortunately the "Sixaxis" app is not completely compatible yet, touchprofiles won't work at all.
The dev already promised a fixed version for next week
The browser performance is really nice No lagging or skipping
After some fiddling around finally browser sync with chrome works too That's really cool! (I needed to delete chromes bookmark data first in google's dashboard, then resync my local chrome. After that the syncing to the Prime worked perfectly.)
So all in all I am super happy with the ICS update. There's still room for improvement, but ICS really made my Prime the device it should have been since the beginning.
My experience with my (DE SKU) Prime is almost the same. Though I had no WiFi issues prior to ICS.
I've only had mine since monday, so I only had 3 days to play with HC before ICS. But even I feel the difference. Everything is just smoother and more responsive. Especially the web browser. And it will actually sync your Chrome bookmarks now. Yay!
I'm exceptionally happy with my device. I bought it to keep me entertained with movies and games during my 2 hours of commuting every day. So far it's been too much fun to play with to get any gaming or movie watching done.
And I'm not sure if it's because my battery is being broken in, but I feel my battery life has gone up since ICS also.
But yes, Asus Taskmanager seems to be broken for me also. Chrashes as soon as it starts. That's the only negative thing I've seen since the ICS upgrade.
This thread almost convinced me back into getting one... Can you compare the wifi range to anything? GPS I dont care about at all. My biggest gripe is the wifi range. How is it compared to the TF101 after ICS? Or even a Galaxy S2 if you have one of those? Both of them have good enough wifi range for me, if the prime is equal, then I will get one.

well, my prime actually picked up my university's wifi network and had a pretty good signal while my galaxy s2 struggled to even connect. at home, the prime is just a tad slower than my sgs2 when doing speedtests.
Hi Diamondback2010,
I got my Prime and at this moment debating if I'm going to stay with it. I'm on ICS and the issue for me is the skippy WiFi. I have a 50MB connection at home and all my other devices laptops, desktop have no issues whatsoever streaming media to tv however simply being 15ft from the router on the Prime I'm losing connection simply by browsing webpages and they take long to load. I don't have this problem even on my DHD.
For a WiFi only device WiFi is the most important aspect for me and the intended use is for traveling and connecting to different WiFi networks.
Perhaps the newer Prime would be more suitable for my needs that's coming in a few months time unless the current Prime can be made better or these issues I'm having resolved with a firmware update or something.
Also to mention I can replicate screen flickering on the Prime on ICS by using it for a while opening a dozen apps/webpages and tapping the recent items button makes the screen flicker on ICS.
This isn't very good plus the WiFi issue I might send it back, will further be testing today.

As much as I also love my SGS2, I've never felt it had particularly good wifi. So my Prime beats it nicely. Especially when it comes to the data flow from some distance (20-30 feet through 2 walls) where my SGS2 will have data drops using speed test, my Prime will see no such issues. And the Prime will have more than 10db better signal strength than my SGS2.
I know you asked for the GS2 or the TF101 but since I have neither of those I compared it to my HTC Wildfire which it beat quite comfortably.

That sounds great! I know the SGS2 isn't known for the best wifi, but it is good enough to get a connection where I normaly would use the prime. My TF101 is a little bit better than the SGS2. If the Prime is anywhere between those two, I will buy one! You convinced me
It doesn't release here in Norway untill the 30th, but I will get one then. We are only getting the Champagne gold one, originally I wanted the Amethyst more. Any of you got any impressions on the colors? What do you think of the champagne one?

Well I can compare it to my laptop and my Desire HD.
My laptop has a really good Wifi reception and it beats my Prime to death
But my Desire HD is a different story. The DHD does have a better range, but that is due to the fact that we (Virtuous Team, creator of the custom ROM I am running) tweaked the Wifi range way beyond stock levels, which leads to really crappy speeds at such ranges.
So in fact my Prime beats my DHD speed wise too. Only thing you really have to keep in mind, is that the Prime's connection is heavily orientation dependant. If the screen shows towards the router (or the general direction) it has quite a bit better recpetion as opposed to the backside towards the router.
I can't really replicate this with m DHD (at least not as much, DHD has Wifi antenna on the backside under a plastic RF window)
With HC I was a bit concerned about Wifi (only range, not the speed), after ICS this is gone.
One gripe is left, but this has something to do with ICS and not the Prime.
You are forced to have some kind of locking mechanism (pin, passwort, gesture) if you want to use an enterprise wifi with certificates (university network)...
That's a bit annyoing... :/
But it's the same on my Desire HD...

I have just been doing some WiFi tests with my HTC Desire HD (running Virtuous Affinity) and Asus Transformer Prime and this is what I'm not happy about
I have a 50MB connection and the desktop with a direct connection is getting 49Mbps so it is a true 50Mbps connection
Now for tests sitting right next to the router which is an N-series router
On my laptop I'm getting 34Mbps
On my HTC Desire HD I'm getting 18Mbps
On the Prime I'm getting 11Mbps
Now for outside in the garden going through 2 walls about 20ft away
On my laptop I'm getting 12Mbps
On my HTC Desire HD I'm getting 6Mbps
On my Prime I'm getting 1Mbps!
I have done this several times and the figures are consistent - this shows my Prime to be under performing compared to my other devices. I would expect the Prime to perform better than the Desire HD but it doesn't.

I'm not experiencing that at all.. Within 10 feet (or right next to) my router I get over 40Mbps down/5Mbps up (I got a 50/5Mbit connection). This is with a Linksys E4200 v1 router.
20-30 feet away (around 7-10 meters) through 2 walls, I get around 10-14Mbps down/4Mbps up. This is almost the same as my old Netbook (Asus Eee first gen). And alot better than my SGS2.

It's better, but only by a tiny amount.. And nothing noticable for me when I do a speedtest (2-3Mbps difference and just as stable). I have to note, that my tests are through drywall, not brick.

My tests were through brick house walls. Thinking about it its quite amazing that the old Asus 1000HE netbook I have running Windows 7 which I upgraded it with has better WiFi than my Asus Transformer Prime...
I got the Prime for a similar use as the 1000HE for travelling abroad where I connect to loads of WiFi networks. With that low WiFi performance on the Prime I can see I'm going to have problems.
I'm debating to send it back and waiting for the newer Prime which maybe an improvement...

Have you tried doing a factory reset? I've seen people say that their wifi was fixed after that. Please report back if you try.

I'd deffinatly try a factory reset if I was you, as a last resort.. Brick/drywall aside. 11Mbps right next to the router is not right unless you got some serious interference going on.
Just trying a factory reset from settings. Would that be the only reset method to reset or is there some other method with a pin?

I believe thats the way to do it yes.. The pin is only for force rebooting the device, not a data wipe.

I see just doing the data wipe from settings but I see after booting up ICS is showing 4.0.3 as current installed Android version so by the looks its only wiping user data and apps.

quick prime question

So i just received the tp two days ago. I seem to have weak wifi signal strength like a lot of you. my question is that is it even a possibility for asus to correct this with some type of OTA update like they are attempting to do with the gps issue. i really want to keep this device but its wifi has me considering returning.
long time reader but this is my first post. thanks for all the help in the past.
This sort of depends on what you mean by weak signal...
My Prime usually has one less wi-fi signal bar than other devices. At the same time, it downloads faster than my other devices. So, I'm happy with that. If I were dependent on a very weak wi-fi access point, I might not be happy.
If comparing to other devices, you are getting less of a signal than one bar less and/or your downloads are slower than they should be, I think Asus can improve it for you. I think we are stuck with one bar less on a healthy Prime, however. I've decided I can live with that, YMMV.
The GPS update made my GPS usable. Then, the ICS update made it unusable again. So, it is possible that firmware updates can help (and hurt).

This has been my experience also. Last night (before the newest firmware update) I ran a test of all the android devices in the house and here's how it turned out (ranked by fastest Kbps downloads to the slowest):
#1 Samsung Galaxy Nexus: 4 out of 4 signal bars
#2 Kindle Fire: 4 out of 4 signal bars
#3 Archos 70: 4 out of 4 signal bars
#4 Transformer Prime: Fluctuated between 2-3 out of 4 signal bars
#5 Pandigital Novel: 3 out of 4 bars, but came in with the slowest Kbps.
Oddly enough, despite the slower download speeds on the Prime, it consistently had the best upload speeds out of all of them (though just slightly).
However (and this is weird, because I haven't seen anyone else mention it), after applying last night's firmware update (9.4.2.11) - signal strength seemed to improve slightly on my Prime with a solid 3 out of 4 bars from the same location.
I also started getting an extra 2000 Kbps with each post-firmware test I ran since then. I'm not sure why though....as the firmware didn't update the Wifi driver.

New .13 firmware made my wifi speed worse

By running the speed tests from the speedtest. net app the new update actually made my wifi speed slower . My connection is 40 / 5m . When I was on firmware. 11.1 I was getting about 5m down. Now I am getting about 1.5m down with the new .13 update. I thought the change log says that it increases wifi performance. Anyone else see slower speeds?
Also to put this in perspective I have my iPhone 4 running the same speedtest app and its getting almost 18m down in the same location as my prime.
Did you try a reboot then do tests again? Yeah the changelog does says it improves wifi on most devices. Still more updates coming though.
Yeah, it increases Wi-Fi performance but for some only and makes it worse for others.
I took mine back to the store earlier today and said I wanted a refund since they got none in stock. The salesman called someone to come over and he asked me to wait for this .13 update, claiming it will fix my Wi-Fi problem. Since I only wanted to exchange, I kept mine. Will report once I am able to update.
Yeah after playing with .13 for over 24 hours my wifi is worse for sure.
My net is 15k down and 2k up.
I live in a condo and can "see" 8-14 other wifi networks. (gads!)
I set mine up to be in the least busy channel
Did this test at 5am to have the least noise
next to router: (2 feet)
14,220 up 2142 down That is the same speed I get wired
Next room over, though 3 walls, bathroom and near a tv, access point, xbox, ps3, wii etc aka a ton of other wifi devices
near side of the room (10 -15 feet away)
13850 down 2113 up
Far side of room (8 feet more) so 15-20 feet away
3896 down 2132 up
4 feet outside my door (about 4-5 feet farther)
2370 down 2027 up
So the download speed is dropping like a rock, the upload speed is staying the same, but it's only 2k so hard to tell if it's being effected.
Thankfully I don't need to use it on my front doorstep a lot.
---------- Post added at 05:22 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:09 AM ----------
Only other device i have to test same spots with is an iPod touch.
Next to router:
8418 down 2009up
near side next room:
8188 down 1995 up
Far side next room:
8150 down 2010 up
Outside:
5324 down 1986 up
So my old iPod touch has better wifi range.

I agree. My speeds were snappy quick (without bt) before this update. Now response times are slower. Asus is going in the wrong direction.
My speed is also down (per speedtest)but my range has been extended(per wifi anlr)and signal stronger. I dont get it I have the lowest Speedtest results since I got it in Dec.
Edit: Started uninstalling apps from the most recent DLs while doing Speedtests ..... and BINGO..... Got rid of Chrome and got all my speed back plus some... I dont get it but whatever Prime now working better than ever.

i was getting bad speeds after the update too, and random reboots, before the update everything was great. I did a factory reset and my wifi is great again and no more random reboots!
So how far is everyone away from there router? I only say that because the speeds are fine next to the router but from 10 to 15 feet they are horrible. I kinda wish I could downgrade to .11.1....
I give up. I've tried everything to get my TFP to get better wifi speeds from a distance and I haven't found anything that helps. I completely reconfigured my router, factory reset my device, uninstalled every single app I've downloaded and still whenever I get over 20 feet away from my router, my wifi speed drops below 2 mbps.
I'm starting to think the people without this issue have some crazy long range routers or something. I really love this tablet but I'm losing hope fast. ICS + tegra 3 is amazing, so I hope if I do return this there will be another similarly specced Tablet out soon. I can't go to ios.

How's that? Why not N routers set to B/G? No, there's more to it than routers; Prime's the odd man out on being able to reach my street. Channels 1-11, Mixed, B, G, N, etc... It's always out of signal before the rest.

No Primes get same range as other Wi-Fi devices I've tested 3 Primes now on several different routers dead spot comes about 10 ft before other Wi-Fi devices.... it's the aluminum backplate that's the culprit.

C2 vs. C3?

Hello , i think to buy the prime but i have some quesntions .
1) whats the different between c2 and c3? in my country i found only c2
2) should i wait for t700? i dont need gps , i dont play games , just the wifi problem is the issue i dont buy it know
ill use it only home (big house 3 floors)
Thanks!
According to those with C3s and some ASUS representatives the C3s have substantially better WiFi than the previous Primes.
i have a c3, no wifi problems whatsoever..
gps still very bad..
Isn't that a bummer :-(
I have a c20 which has a better wifi and gps than my previously owned c10... but what about now... sad... just plain sad. The product needed four months of production to finally get better

there are .. you are in the wrong forum and wrong thread (look in development area )
My prime is great around the router. It's just bad @ certain areas around the house when its near -70dbm. My other wi-fi devices are also bad @ these areas but the prime takes it to a new level. So the question is how do I fix this.
I'm not much of a tinkerer and I mostly use my Prime @ home. Away from home my Galaxy Nexus tethered to it is absobloodylutely superb. So since my problem is more of a home issue, I went ahead and used an old linksys router w/dd-wrt firmware and turned it into a repeater bridge. Now while it did work for our desktop w/ethernet it didn't perform too admirably with wi-fi devices. It was just too weak. In the end I just bought this here baby:

Okay, it might be overkill but hell yes did it fix my wi-fi issue @ home & backyard like a boss when BBQ'ing lol. Using a C3 while never using any earlier iterations of the prime so can't compare between wi-fi.
Saw this one too though but not much of a traveler/hotel person but may be great for those individuals =)

i saw it , but its not popular like roms on galaxy s II or other devices
why ?

i think because prime sales are suffering from the bad reputation and low producion rates...
just install AOPK from jermaine, no need for other roms!
ot: atm i'm using my c3 prime outdoors right now, 3 walls and window between router and me , aprox 20 meters, surfing goes well, streaming video is quite impossible.

Are you sure that C3 has GPS on board ?
I have a C2... recently purchased from BestBuy... no issues with WiFi... as good as my laptop and Galaxy Nexus... granted GPS is not great, but it does work most of the time when I'm outside...
Another C3 here with good Wi-Fi and GPS performance, even indoors. There's just a limit to how well a low power GPS transmission can be received through multiple walls.
Many phones running GPS indoors are actually triangulating using cell tower signals much of the time, and I find Google Maps is often positioning me through the BSSID of the Wi-Fi AP's it sees instead of through any GPS lock.
That said, I second the endorsement for using a $20 AP (running DD-WRT firmware in repeater mode) to cover blind spots for any Wi-Fi devices. Not as good as the high power options, but they're cheap, only require AC, and are easy to put up.
I have a C2 and getting great (or satisfactory for me) WiFi performance. Could care less about GPS on a tablet. When I'm driving I'd rather be navigating with my phone and not a big tablet that provides a distraction from driving. To me too much is made about the GPS. WiFi issues are a more serious concern in everyday use.

My.c2 wifi is on par with my HD2. Perfectly acceptable.
Indoor GPS locked on to 8.. and saw 11 satellites.
I have a BB from early December and my WiFi works perfectly, even when using Bluetooth for audio streaming. GPS is next to useless but I don't need it anyway (and they are releasing that new dongle).
While the C3's might have a lower chance of manufacturing defect, I don't think that they are any different hardware-wise from the C2 and earlier Primes.

It is, doesn't seem that there's any difference with the C3, several users posting their C3 had issues just at the top and in the bt/wifi fallout thread. Looks like you still got to get lucky to get a good one

I think its been like this from the beginning... There are a small % of primes that have issues, no matter what Serial. Thats the way it is with complex electronic devices
If it was a small %.. there would be a lot more happy posts around this place and the internet in general.. Just sayin.

Shall i buy a Transformer Prime for University

Good evenig guys i have the following question. I started studying now and i want to have a tablet for it . Now i have seen the transformer Prime and i like it very much but i also ready the GPS and Wifi issues. To be honest, i'll will never use my Prime for Navigation, i have my Samsung Galaxy S2 for this so i dont give a f*uck for GPS. The only Problem for me is Wifi. Are the newer ones now without Wifi problems because a Tablet without working Wifi would sucks realy hard.
I can chose between the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 N and the Prime and i realy would like to chose the Prime

Sorry, and i don't mean this in a bad way, but like you said you really would like to choose the Prime...then what's really the point of this thread?
There are so many comparison threads out there...just look.
My only suggestion, is to just wait for the Infinity.
The thing is that i don't want to have an tablet with Wifi problems, i want a tablet that works fine without hours of troubleshooting. Why shall i wait for the infinity ? Is it so much better ?

As of newer primes i dont think there is much problem with wifi...then again it is all luck as i can gather from reading in the forums...even if you dont care for gps there is a gps dongle provided by asus with the prime...
As far as Infinity goes...it is still not out so who knows what the device would be like...and i guess it ll be a bit expensive than prime owing to improved screen pixel density and other stuff...there is always a chance that devices so complex would not be at par with high expectations we hold...(tf201 and ipad3 for example)
and apart from that i can feel your itch to buy this beauty...
yeah its is realy a beauty. Like i said if Wifi works fully then i would buy it in an instant. But now i have to read like 10000000 to see what i do
WiFi works...its just not as strong as it should be. If you didn't know, it is due to the metal framing.
and if you say not as strong as it should be you mean like what ?....
70 % from 100 ?

Can't really give you an exact number...but here's an example: my ps3 shows 80% connection strength, my laptop shows maybe about the same, but my Prime would only show about 30%. And my router is located downstairs.
Hi there,
Let me tell you something... this is the best android tablet, period.
the new ipad is also a good choice but take this example: right now I'm playing Super mario 64 in my prime using a xbox 360 controller. Yesterday I was watching a movie using the tablet and my 1 tb WD passport. This tablet lets you do stuff you can't with other devices... so is your decision.
good luck!
just read the positive transformer thread in my signature and then buy a prime..lmfao
My prime's Wifi works okay, it always has a weaker connection than other devices such as my iPod Touch and Laptop, but its not very noticeable.
From experience using it at my university which is known for having a terrible wireless network that gets really slow and can be very hard to connect to, I've had no more trouble connecting to the wireless network with my Prime than my other devices. Before the semester started I was really worried (after reading all the posts about wifi) about not being able to connect to the wireless network but its been working fine all semester.
Not on a single occasion have I ever seen my TFP not have a connection when my Galaxy Nexus did, so I sometimes wonder how often the wifi issues actually manifest in normal settings--and I work all over my Uni's campus and never had any problems.
That said though, make sure you know what you're getting into if you're going to use the TFP as a laptop replacement. It can't do many of the things that students in technical/scientific fields will need to do, and of the things it can do, it does a pretty bad job at many (web browsing is painfully slow if you need to do any sort of research--almost always slower than my Galaxy Nexus, and spreadsheets/presentations are gimped out to the point where they're useless in many applications). It doesn't play particularly well with eLearning either.
There are really no problems with wifi performance...it is a subjective matter...if anyway you want to use wifi in places with awfully bleak signal...i suggest you get this modem with loads of feature one useful thing being able to act as universal repeater to boost wifi signal...if you are unsatisfied with performance which i dont think you will be...

The prime can do a lot... You probably won't be making power points and multitasking could be annoying if you constantly have to switch between two things. For the same price you could build a fairly decent linux box.

Frankly, most campuses have wifi coverage over the entire campus. I know Notre Dame has wifi coverage even on all of their lawns that students lay on. I have never experienced poor enough wifi reception where it became an issue, and the issue you'll run in to far more often (whenever you're on campus) is that the bandwidth that's being sucked up by everyone will slow the internet down more than a poor wifi connection ever will.
That being said, I use my Prime to read all but one of my textbooks on. If you plan to take this much cheaper route, then I would wait for the Infinity. It is completely inarguable that a higher resolution screen wouldn't be better for reading, especially if you're going to be doing extended session of reading like you would for school.
