Ok... So I can't turn my tablet off. I have to let it time out for it to go to sleep. I also can't hold the button down to restart the device. Does anyone know how to fix this without killing the battery? That's going to take a while at 65%.

If it is OP better not let it doesn't or he won't be able to cut it back on. Unless possibly if prime is poered down, plugging in power cord starts it up.
It can't be busted because I can wake it up, just not turn it off. It's like the power button gets disabled when the screen is on.

I still say the physical switch is busted. Don't know what software bug would cause your issue. In any case, you just have to drain the battery to turn it off, no other way. Stream a few flash based movies with the tablet overclocked.
Clockwork mod from the market can reboot from the app if you are rooted. Quckboot is another. If you have adb on your PC you can reboot using that too.

If you have Android SDK installed try adb reboot just to see it isn't hanging on some software problem...
Finally ran out of battery (damn these things last forever and that was only the first power cycle). Rebooted and it works as how it should. Time to see if I can replicate the problem.
Same thing happened to me last night had to drain the battery. wonder whats causing the problem.

Ive been having the sleep of death problem with the my phone right out of the box. I have updated to MR5 and tried many factory resets.
My question now is that was anyone that had the sleep of death issue been able to solve it by rooting the phone and/or installing a different rom? If yes, this would be a big help because its VERY annoying having to pull the battery 6-8 times a day. Thanks!
Have you tried flashing the SBF?

I wouldn't say that the problem is "solved", but I have certainly experienced it much less frequently after rooting and unlocking my phone (from several times a day to maybe once a week).
The only way to fix the Sleep of Death is by returning the phone. There is a bad batch of them out there. Trust me I know. I picked one up mid August and was stuck pulling the battery every couple of hours even after flashing, hard resets, turning off various radio etc. I finally got the phone swapped out, no issues since.
I picked mine up on August 12th and just after the update of mr5 i ended up getting a new one from the sprint store.
i havent had one issue with this new one. i left it unrooted for about a week and had no issues.
id go to sprint and ask for new phone.

I believe "sleep of death" is when you hit the power button to put your phone to sleep it never wakes back up; just sits on black screen no matter how many times you hit power. Some experience this after updating their device.

the sleep of death is when the phone goes idle and screen goes off (normal so far), but when you go to light it back up by hitting top power button then nothing no matter how long you hold the button - just nothing as if there is no battery in the thing.
Only way to turn phone on is to pull battery, put it back in, then hit power button to turn it back on.
That is screen of death. Mine did it randomly (too many for my taste) before the update, now it has only happened once in the 3 weeks since the update.

Ya, sounds like you are getting the SOD (Sleep of Death) that is if she didnt actually turn it off but just thought she did, anyways it wont hurt to try
To get it to power up you need to hard reset it, hold down the power button and volume down at the same time for around 8 secs or so, basically just keep it held down until you see the Samsung splash screen, it should restart normally, if it happens again which it probably will just rinse and repeat
Just wait and get it exchanged, if they agreed to change it then there's really no need to go meddling around with it and possibly voiding the warranty
Yeah known issue on the 10.1 Tab, had it aswell very often but on HC 3.1 and when the tab is it's docking (keyboard).
Now with updating to 3.2 oddly enough never happens anymore.
What I did indeed was to hold the power button untill the tab restarted.
Ok thanks guys helped a bunch

Here is what happened:
About 3 hours ago I replied to a text messages after it sent my screen shut off abruptly could not get it to turn back on. I have done a battery pull tried Vol rocker + power to boot into boot loader nothing seems to work. The phone has never been wet, dropped once about 3 months ago(doubt it is that). The power button works becuase if I put it on the charger the light comes on and when I hold the power button down it goes out and comes back on as if it is powering up but I have nothing. Is this anything a hard reset could fix and is that possible through adb seeing as I cannot power into anything?
Guess I am just looking for any tips or tricks if someone else has encountered a similar issue? Or do you think my screen just crapped out?
Might be a bad battery pimpin.
Try tyrning it on with cmd (adb)
Adb devices
Adb reboot

pull the battery, restart the device with the power button.
if it is simply the screen, it should still vibrate when you fire it up, if it is not vibrating, it is not even turning on.
after that, possible the battery. pull it out and take a voltmeter to it.
after that, if nothing, i think you are pretty much f'd. the fact that it randomly shut off sounds like something was fried.
good luck

Hmm I am thinking it is the battery I left it on the charger overnight and when I tried to boot it this morning my splash screen appeared for about 5 secs and then it shut off again. I am traveling for work right now worst possible time for this to happen. I'll thow a meter on it when I get home to test that out if the battery is good I am assuming something fried and it is a lost cause.
Thanks for the tips everyone I will also try an ADB boot when I return home as well
I'm having a problem. At first I thought I was just closing the "lid" too quickly and not watching it fully shut down like in windows sometimes things will crash and if you don't click on shut down again it'll just sit there waiting for you to ok the force close. But then I started to make sure it was fully off before closing the lid. Friday I shut it down dock and tablet fully charged. Today I open the lid and the thing has been on for a long time. The dock has been fully depleted and tablet at 52% meaning it turned back on not much longer after I shut it down.
Is anyone else having this problem? I don't have it to wake with keyboard thing. I can't figure out what's wrong. I'm not accidentally turning it back on either b/c that power button takes quite a lot of depressing to turn the unit on. The power button is also facing toward the top of my briefcase. My briefcase has no closing flap either.
Sorry for posting it in general. I was browsing both the QA forum and this one to see if anyone posted.. apparently hit the make new thread button in general instead of QA. If a mod can move it instead of deleting I would appreciate it!!
I think this answers your question.

I've found if I shut it down before I close the lid and give it a few seconds after it vibrates to say that its shut down. Then close the lid it stays shut off after that

Sorry it doesn't. I mentioned that I made sure it was shut down before I closed the lid I watch it shut down, vibrate, leave the lid open while I pack the rest of my stuff up. Then I tap on the keyboard/swipe my finger across the touchpad and it's still not responding then I close the lid. I've even tried pressing the power button quickly enough that if it were on it would immediately light back up but nothing happens. I don't press it long enough to make it boot back up. I watch it for a few seconds after that too before storing it. I really thought I solved it too last week when I would try all that and watch it turn off but I was so surprised to open the lid on Sunday and see its been draining all weekend.
It works for me if I wait at least 10 sec after it vibrates.

Nothing special. I had the same question as you. I applied as suggested and it worked. Nothing more I can say.
Sorry
Since this happens when you have the dock connected, did you try changing this setting:
Settings > Asus customized settings > Battery Saving > "Disable wake-up function on keyboard when the tablet is asleep to save more power."
Check this box and then turn your tablet off and see if it restarts itself. There might be a stuck key on the keyboard that is registering as a key press which could be turning your tablet back on.

I talked about how to do when disconnected. Would you give a try ?
About when it is connected, I don't understand the point. Who cares if it is really turne off or not ? It charges anyway. No ?

If the tablet is connected to the dock and is left on and unused, it will still drain the battery on the tablet and the dock. The longer it is left on and unused the more battery will be drained. If you completely deplete your batteries in such a manner and leave them depleted long enough you will destroy the cells and they won't be able to hold a charge.
Also, the tablet should complete the shutdown process even if you close the lid before it finishes shutting off. That is the way that it works on my tablet. Even with the lid closed, my Prime completes the shut down process, vibrates once and then it is off. When I open it back up later, I have to press the on-button for the device to restart. There shouldn't be any waiting period necessary.

If it doesn't work you might wanna do a hard reset on your tablet. This sounds like a software issue and hard resets are usually pretty good at resolving small software issues like this one.
Just back up your date first.
Mine works fine. Cut it off, waited a few seconds, and closed it for half an hour. Had to cut it back on when I opened it up.
I still have the issue on some boots where it'll never enter Deep Sleep, so my dock will get eaten before I notice it, but nothing like this.
I'm having the same issue, turns back on
Not the same as the OP but I've noticed that if I power off my Prime and then plug it into the wall charger it turns on and boots back into ICS. At first I thought that I had hit the power button with the hand that I was holding the tablet with when I plugged in the cord to the socket on the bottom of the tablet but I was careful doing it subsequent times and it happens every time.

Mine does that too but I think its supposed to depending on the manufacturer? My bf's galaxy nexus phone and his old Droid did that too. My evo stays off though. It makes me feel like I'm saving the battery from discharge recharging as much if I can keep it off. But at least it will turn off if you leave it plugged in when you shut down. The Droid didn't seem to let you do.. kept wanting to be on anytime it was plugged in.
Thanks almighty! I'll try the reset... Time to back it up!
My Nexus S phone, if powered off first, stays off when plugged into AC. The Prime is my first Android device that exhibited this behavior... Had a Motorola phone before the Nexus S that would stay off when charging as well. Seemed weird to me when it first happened...

No to all.???????
If its plugged it that is possible if there is a small fluctuation in power.. Connector being a little faulty. Etc.

Not plugged in. Tonight I'm going to turn it off with Rom Toolbox and see if that makes any difference.
That is very odd lol. Haven't heard that one before.
Have you set an alarm? I heard some huawei phone has this feature, it will power on itself when it reaches the time of the alarm.

Yes. I have B309. Glad to know I'm not alone.
I have been on the lookout ever since I saw this post. There have been others reporting the issue and it is marked as fixed in the next update. We just don't know when the update will come. So, at least you know you aren't crazy.
Have this issue in 309 too. . Turned on and went into Airplane Mode.
