My micro HDMI stopped working all of sudden today. I called Asus and they want me to first do a "data wipe" to force the re-install of the latest firmware. (I haven't checked, but is a data wipe different than a factory reset?)
If that doesn't fix the hdmi issues, then send it in for repair. I was wondering if I would lose root after the data wipe. I have Rootkeeper installed and enabled.
Finally, do I need to undo root if I send it in for repair? That is, does root void the warranty?
Thanks in advance for the advice.
I don't think the wipe touches /system, just user data.

^ What he said.
Factory restore will only wipe out user data, it will not touch with the system data.
Your saved rooted su will still be intact.
I called Asus, they want me to do a data wipe (power on + volume down pressed simultaneously). This will according to them erase everything and reset the tablet. My guess rootkeeper will not matter and I will lose root.
I am pretty sure the hdmi problem is a hardware issue.. I will do the data wipe, test the hdmi, 'and then decide to rma it or return to amazon for full refund if it doesn't work. I've only had for a couple of weeks and if things are breaking now, I can't imagine how long it will last without falling apart.

I've decided to return to amazon for full refund. Rma would've cost me 30-40. That was the last straw. Wifi, gps, and broken hdmi in 2 weeks on top of Rma cost + original cost led me to believe sticking with it would have led to a ton of frustration and regret.
I really wanted it to work out, but it was basically just a toy for me. Given it's cost, the weak customer service was unacceptable. In contrast, I own a vitamix blendr. It has the same price point. I had a problem, they sent me a box to ship it in and paid for shipping. It was turned around in a week.
Good luck to those who are sticking with it.

hi guys, do have some minnor issues after updated. althought i did ics update out of the box b4 i did any apps.
just some freezes now and then and silly things really.
like with vista then windows 7, it was best to do full clean install, so would it be better that i do a full reset on my prime?
thanks for any info
For other users, doing a reset has solved a lot of issues. Some people have reported going from crappy wifi, to really good wifi after a reset.
I might try this as I'm having crappy WiFi on the Prime with ICS when all my other devices are good.
How do you master reset? is that the pin method or from settings?

From settings.
If you do a reset to improve your WiFi, I'm fairly certain you're going to be disappointed.

Check this out...
I had major issues with Purple 32gig Prime TF201 from Gamestop
Wifi/BT, weird resets, and lag and flickering,
I said to myself,
I'm gonna return it asap.
I did ICS update and once it installed I said
'let's start over. '
I did a master delete from menu options and it rebooted and deleted everything.
I set up the prime and all issues fixed.
Lost the games that came with it but I don't care.. Everything works

Not sure why you guys call it a master reset it's called factory reset and I know the one problem it won't fix lockup issue with ICS (if your prime is one of the infected ones lol)SDReaver just hasn't realized how random the total randomness of it can be I went 15 hours without the lockup issue before.
I was thinking about doing a factory reset! Because I am getting some graphical tearing sometimes when switching apps

cant you titanium backup the games first? you'd need root but its worth trying to preserve your bundled games for later
Not saying anything but their is a file floating around with all those games....... Just incase you have to factory reset them.....
I returned my preordered Prime from GS yesterday for an exchange. Did ICS update before apps and had lagging, lookups etc. Did the factory reset and lo and behold it's fine now. Also, I used the installed app backup for the games and all is well. Very happy with it now.

You can actually use the built in backup and restore app to backup games to external usb I did it and it worked flawlessly
What should I do to my rooted Prime before sending it in for RMA? Should I unroot via Vipermod and then factory reset or is there something else I need to do either before, during or after this process?
Thanks .

If all you did was root it and not unlock it then I would unroot, factory reset and then pack it up.
I am not sure if you can re-root it with .21 OTA. I am unlocked so I have not kept up with that aspect.
good luck!
If you used OTA Rootkeeper, make sure to delete the su backup before you unroot.
Thanks.
Ah balls, unrooted and factory reset before deleting backup! Ah well, I don't think I'll be sending it back just yet anyway (It's just a camera issue so nothing too major) so hopefully Vipermod can root .21 by the time I do send it back.

IDK, maybe count yourself lucky for leaving it....if they don't notice, at least you can recover your root when it gets back...
I scrubbed mine for my RMA, and now kinda wished I rolled the dice on them not noticing the SU backup....hate to unlock and lose warranty, but I probably will if we don't end up with a root soon.
Find someway to document your Prime's current condition so they don't blame you for anything that happens during shipping or in their facilities. Something like record your prime and the serial and then record some live television, etc.

don't think its worth unlocking and losing warranty on the prime... i got my prime in jan with a bc serial. the camera was working for fine 3 whole months.. then suddenly it stops working with the green/static screen...
ofcourse unless the devs come out with their own unlock that doesnt void whats left of my warranty ;D
PHOTOGRAPHS! Take PHOTOGRAPHS!
For my past two RMAs I have even included a few of the photos WITH the prime in the box. After photos, take a short video show casing the prime as you package it and put it in the box for shipping. Then tape the box closed IN the video and write the RMA number on the box. Be very verbose about what you're doing in the video. If they receive it CID you have PROOF that you shipped it in whatever condition it was when you had it. Anything past you is either their fault or the shippers.
For example, my first RMA was me shipping my Prime back for having small holes in the metal backing.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4784673/Pictures/Photos/Prime/Pitting 1.jpg - I included THIS picture in the box.
My second Prime arrived from the RMA facility NEW Still SEALED in Box. I received it with a NON-functioning backlight, but the screen still worked.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4784673/Pictures/Photos/Prime/DSCF2061-1.jpg - I included THIS picture in the box.
Definitely photo and/or video the prime and something like live news or something that can't be faked/replayed. This way whne they send you pics of "your customer induced damaged" prime and ask for $400 to repair a $500 product you have evidence. I did all of this and thank God didn't need it (But that is because I took the precautions)
I just sent my Prime into the Canadian facility in Ontario.
I backed up all my apps onto my SD card then removed the card. I deleted all apps, data, and caches for apps with personal data (just an extra cautionary step), then I did a wipe/factory reset. Then I took pictures of my Prime documenting condition, s/n sticker, and that it operates. Boxed it up and took more pictures of the packaging. Then sent it in.
One thing I'll say is the from the time I put the RMA request in to when I got the RMA number was 12 hours. ASUS responded very quickly. We'll see how long it takes to get a unit back once they receive it.
Ah yes, I shall definately be taking pictures of the unit with a daily paper next to it for example. I installed Rootkeeper and deleted the SU backup without root, whether it worked or not is unknown although I'm sure somebody can clear that up.

Agreed, but after the two all expense paid trips my tablet has taken back to TX, it will have to completely crap out before I set it back to those hacks again. Each trip they fix something and break something else.....sorry wrong thread to rant about poor RMA service....
Those recommending photos are spot on. I would even suggest detailed photos of the aluminum finish (mine returned with significant surface rubs--obviously when they were applying pressure to remove the front glass).
I really think that after I register for the gps addon toy on Monday, I toss Asus the one finger solute and unlock. I haven't owned an android device for more then a week without placing a custom rom on it, so the four months I have had this one is some kind of record.
Well, yesterday I rooted for the first time and it was successful and it was awesome. unfortunately, my GPS is still not working. Any other suggestions?
I am now on glitched AOKP ICS

Basics first: just let us know if you've done all this stuff.
Simple reboot.
Reboot through recovery with wipe of cache and dalvik.
Clear cache and data of any app with which you are using GPS (e.g. Google Maps).

Simple reboot and recovery reboot with wipe of cache did nada.
What is dalvik? It's not in your glossary, so I don't know what it is.
Also, I used gps status to wipe GPS cache, also nothing. The first time I did that with gps status while still on stock GB it worked for about a day, then stopped getting a lock again. I was convinced it was because of all the blaot weighing my phone down on stock, which is why I rooted, assuming that rooting would solve my problem. My GPS has worked great for me the last 18 months until about three weeks ago for no apparent reason, now I can't seem to get a lock on any or more than one satellite at a time.
And if I sound like I know what I am talking about, that's awesome, cause I am a total noob and fake'n it. You awesome devs got me this far, and I want to learn more, but first I REALLY need my GPS to work!

i would say if your gps worked for 18mo then quit, its a hardware issue...especially if you flash aokp and gps still does not work. i get instant locks with 5ft accuracy...thats on glitched aokp 37.
So what's my next step? Flash back to stock and hope Verizon will give me a replacement? What's the odds they will do that for me this far in?

call them and see...if they will send u a replacement then odin to stock and ship it off.
I just called verizon and they said i could talk to tech support to do some troubleshooting, and that they would probably contact samsung. ultimately, at this point, I am outside of the one year warranty for replacement with verizon and with samsung, so I might call later when I have a ton of time to waste on the phone and after I odin back to stock, but i'm not holding my breath and am going to start searching ebay and craigslist for cheap replacement with functioning gps. Any replacement suggestions?

at this point i would probably just get another fascinate or maybe a charge if looking for a cheap replacement....you would have 4g with a charge but better development on the fascinate.
you could also "lose your phone" and call insurance

If I had bothered to get insurance previously,I would maybe consider that. I wonder if I can get it this late in the game, then use it in a month.

2nd hardware problem in 4 months (last time was green camera issue).
Now Asus is saying that it will not be covered under warranty because it's unlocked, and they will not pay for shipping to their facility (as they did last time).
So, without power button, of course, I can't use CWM to backup. Of course CWM Touch is not available for TF201 ICS tablet.
Used ADB to wipe and pull the files I wanted, but was a little clumsy to wipe the internal sdcard.
Anyway, if Asus f**ks me on the warranty, then I think I'm done with Asus for good. Two hardware problems in 4 months, and refusal to remedy a hardware problem because I unlocked it, then I'm officially done with them. Galaxy Note I suppose - Asus clearly doesn't understand Quality Assurance or Customer Service.

Quite correct! Despite the unfortunate experience I had with their phone service, Asus handled this like champs. Tablet fixed and on its way back to me. Once again, can't complain about good service.

I wanted to know if other TF201 owners were having problems with their power button - thought there might be a fix or something. Apologies if this was wasteful
On my Transformer Prime with ICS, here lately, when I want to drag an ICON from one screen to another, when I hold down to drag, everything will freeze and then it will say that Launcher has closed and it resets. I try it again, same thing. If I reboot (which it seems like it takes forever), it works for a while and then it'll come back.
Anyone else encounter this? (I did a search, didn't find it) If so, any fixes for it?
Thanks!
Brian
Do you use the stoch launcher?
Maybe you could try a reset (little hole near micro-sd slot).
Yes...I use the stock launcher. I last reset my device when I got it repaired from ASUS for "hot spots" (which have sadly redeveloped.)
I was hoping to avoid a reset...
No, it is just like a cold-boot. The last chance I know would be a factory reset.
I give up on ASUS
My screen cracked due to the keyboard dock. I called for an RMA. I sent the TF201 in using the RMA. I received an email after two weeks. They will not repair the device under warranty. It will cost over $260 to repair it. That isn't going to happen.
I will not buy another ASUS product unless this is repaired under warranty. I have moved on to a Galaxy Tab 2.

I finally received my new, repaired, TF201 tablet from Asus! I sent it to them in August, and just received it. This is not the same device I sent to them. That one was sent to someone else! (Doh!) So I have another refurbished device. It seems to be working well, except the GPS started out working perfectly, but after updating to JellyBean, it has stopped working. sigh.
So, patience and perseverance has paid off for me. the design flaw was repaired at no cost to me. I'll still be using the keyboard dock, but I will be SOOOOO gentle with it, lest it freak out my screen again.
