Disappointing flash performance on Transformer Prime with ICS - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I have tried to play flash videos on multiple sites and on 6 different browsers and the only site that performs well is Youtube.
Also, is it impossible to keep flash running in a tab and then switch to another tab while keeping flash running? Anytime I open a flash video or audio stream in a browser tab, it closes immediately when I switch to another tab (this happens on all 6 browsers that I tested). I bought this as a laptop replacement so this is very disappointing and I am most likely returning it. Is there anyway to remedy these issues or should i just stick with a laptop?
Thanks for any help.

Yes. I have experienced this as well, but both ics and flash for ics is very new.
I think performance will certainly improve as updates from adobe and Asus roll out.
Now with flash stopping when you switch tabs, this is the default behavior and I don't think that it can be changed. It can be a little annoying but totally makes sense as I don't want flash eating up resources when I am not actively using it. For streaming music and whatnot there is always an app for whatever service I use.

Prime has more than enough power to push flash..lmao this isn't on the prime. Adobe flash in general still needs to be updated and optimized for ICS. They released an update just recently for ICS support but still needs tweaking. The 2 best browsers to use for best flash performance is Stock browser that came with prime and Boat browser. Plus flash playback is also dependent on your connection speed. I have no problem watching flash movies through various sites. As far as the tab thing, why would you have a movie playing in one tab and open a new one? That'll be just burning up the battery anyways. Might be dependent on the site you opened up. Web browsers are RAM intensive. So it'll likely just pause the movie or whatever till you comeback. Plus that gives movie a lil time to buffer anyways.
Overall Flash plays pretty well for me considering ICS support just came out and more will come.

flash on android has never been good...stock ics has best flash experience but still it rebooted my prime a few times...
lets move html5 and not get left behind...

Flash works great on my prime, I know id be frustrated not having this with a certain fruity tablet when web browsing

after the last flash update, i lost the ability to stream a flash movie full screen over hdmi. Used to work fine before...

for those waiting for more updates i thought adobe said they were done supporting flash on mobile?

So I'm guessing 1080p flash works fine right?
$1 gets you a reply

Looks like I will be returning the Prime today due to the horrible implementation of Flash. I can just barely load a simple flash stream on 6 different browsers and then of course there's the nonexistent multitasking.
Not trying to cause a stir, I just had very high hopes for this as being a laptop replacement and it failed miserably. Hopefully you goes who stick with it will get some performance upgrades in the future via software upgrades.

Is this because the prime seems to not allow you to watch your "Special" flash videos n movies? Lmfao. . Gotta have those working 24/7..lol

On any $200 netbook i could open a stream of a sports game in one tab and browse in another without the stream stopping, but not on the $500 prime...

That has nothing to do with the Prime. Thats due to how Abode implemented flash on Android. It doesn't play in the background on any Android device I've ever tried. Seen as they aren't developing flash anymore either, I wouldn't be too hopeful for a change in that situation.

I understand the frustration with playing flash in the background.
I have the same issues. And especially when it comes to youtube. I want to be able to open a youtube music video in a tab and switch back to whatever i was doing, and listen to the music
This is not the poor flash implementation on an android device. It's the youtube's new policy that you have to be watching the video while it's playing ( so you could see all the stupid banners and commercials)
This has been a huge topic on youtube forums and ppl were very annoyed of the changed.
You have to have youtube on your active tab or it will pause.
Funny that PC computers didn't adopt the new policy. That's why ppl got pissed.
PS: people downgraded their android firmware to be able to use the old youtube in the background. But you loose all the goodies of the upgrades

Why would you want that?

There is really not enough screen real estate to be brawsing while watching a flash video. Besides why would you want multiple videos playing in different tabs, all the audio playing simultaneously, fo waht possible purpose?
Finally, has anyone tried opening a separate browser and multitasking in that? I would test myself, but my Prime is in Grapevine Texas, about to be manhandled, butchered and beat upon by Asus Warranty service morons.... The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has nothing on whats happening to my poor tablet. Shudder

I'm not sure if it's any help, but I've had no problems with Flash on my TFP. I was actually thinking to myself "Apparently it takes 4 cores to make Flash work smoothly on a mobile device." I've been able to watch HD videos on thedailyshow.com, engadget.com and Penny Arcade TV with no slowdowns.

I think the main challenge is to be able to listen to video music from flash based websites (in the background), while reading this forum (on the active tab)
I'm surprised that this issue is only annoying to a few people.
Don't you have a youtube playlist playing in the background while you browse ?(on a PC)
Nobody wants to "see" different movies in multiple background tabs at the same time.
On a side note.. i doubt android is a platform that works bad with Flash.. i wonder what are people comparing it to. I've had symbian, android, win mo and iOS handsets and I'm pretty sure none of those played better flash.
It reminds me of "white people problems" posters

Sounds like you had unrealistic expectations for a tablet running a mobile OS. Flash does not continue to run when you switch to other apps or tabs because it is eating up your battery and other resources, this is a feature not a bug (though the option would be great). My prime currently runs flash fine (Dolphin HD). I don't think you should try making the prime work for you however, you clearly want a laptop.

Flash was good

While I returned my prime for the WIFI/BT fallout issue, I have to say that flash performance was great.
I could go to ESPN and watch the games they had, streaming in high quality with no stutter and it looked good on the screen. Vimeo, youtube, ign, really had no issues with flash on it using the stock browser in ICS.

I am currently running ICS (I have enabled force gpu rendering in developer settings).
I am using ICS Browser + (agent string desktop version)
I have tried viewing videos on the following pages
ESPN
Buttery smooth (full screen and integrated)
CNN

College Humor
Buttery smooth (integrated)
Hope this helps!

I believe dolphin hd has an extension so that u can have side by side pages. I wonder if flash would still play like that?
Edit: its an app called dual web browser.

It's a forum it needs not a thread, or now multiple threads in a different section. I don't get why it takes so long to create new forums for new devices.

Still Charging
UPS just dropped my off from Amazon. It is charging up now and I will try to post a review soon.
I received mine yesterday, and played around with it a little bit. It's my first Android device, so I don't have much to compare it to, or have any experience with what apps to try out.
Quick impressions of the unique features of the tablet:
Crash Bandicoot works well (I was under the impression that the control were bad since all of the videos I have seen online, the person playing always drops down the first hole, or gets hit by the first crab). But, the game seems to always stay in the background after minimizing it; quick to restart, but a bit annoying. I'm hoping for more PS games soon.
Pinball Heroes also works well, and can be played both in portrait and landscape. It is also touched enabled instead of using PSP controls. I believe there were around 7 tables, which is nice.
I set up the IR Remote Control feature on the Samsung TV quite easily, and it worked without a problem. The performance is pretty good as well; I will have to try registering more devices around the house.
The Video and Music Unlimited services were not up yet, so I couldn't try it.
I have the Canadian version, and it looks like it does not come with the Chumby app; too bad.
For battery life, I have been using it for ~2hours and idle for ~8hours (according to the Android stats), and it is at ~60%. So, not great; but I'll wait for a few more charges to see how the battery life is.
Did not try out the DLNA feature, or the Sony Reader store yet.
I tried putting an SD card from my Sony Camera into the Tablet, and it was able to read it fine. Using the file transfer app, I can open pictures on the SD card without transferring it over to the tablet first (not sure about Videos though). So, a good feature for photographers that want to preview their photos with a bigger display on the go.
I'm not a fan of the wedge design. I still think the tablet is kinda heavy no matter how I hold it, so the wedge design does nothing for me except increase it's size. Most reviews/previews do say it is a good design, so I might be in the minority on this.
Ok, that's it for now. I might return with new impressions in a few, or I might just lurk around and see what others think of it. Hopefully, we get our own forum soon!!
Design
Initially I was a bit concerned that Sony had made their tablet a different shape just for the sake of being different, but having had a good play with it, it has become apparent that it was designed with both form and function in mind.
The curved 'folded magazine' design feels right when reading content in portrait view which is great for reading books and using Apps like Pulse. The textured back also enables you to grip the device easier without fear of letting it slip from your hand.
Some reviews have said it feels a bit cheap, I wouldn't use the word cheap, they have obviously tried to use lightweight materials (plastic) to keep it easy to handle for long periods. Despite this it still feels like a solid piece of kit.
Sony Software
I am a bit of an Android purist, I usually don't like it when companies put a load of crap of their own on. Luckily the user interface is largely untouched, only a few minor additions that some people will probably find useful. They have done a good job with extending the default media apps though.
The music app is really sexy, I love a good interface that utilises the album art. This is probably one of the best examples. The only issue I had was once I got an error message after dropping some music files on to the device saying "Unable to update database" or something, but a reboot sorted that.
The reader app is great, I have a load of epub files in my Dropbox, I just downloaded them and they appeared straight away in the library.
Video looks great, but as with a lot of these kind of devices codec support is a bit limited out the box. I was able to play pretty much every media file type I wanted (smoothly) once I installed RockPlayer and played them through that, worth doing if you can't be bothered re-encoding.
The social feed app is a good idea, but ultimately flawed (e.g. not being able to view comments on a facebook post). I prefer to look at Facebook, Twitter, Google+ in their respective apps. I guess for a quick overview of what is happening it might be adequate.
The standout inclusion is definitely the remote control app. I set up my Sky box, my Sony AV receiver, and my Samsung TV within about 5 minutes and now all are available from one place. Skipping between channels on sky by swiping the screen feels very natural, the novelty might wear off eventually, but not having to fumble for 3 separate remotes in the dark to switch on all 3 devices will be awesome
Apps Compatibility / Performance
A lot has been said in the past about the lack of apps for Honeycomb, to be honest I don't know what people are on about, every app I have tried seems to OK. Some you can tell aren't yet optimised for tablets (e.g. Facebook) but they still look pretty nice.
Most games I tried (Cut The Rope, Riptide HD, Samurai II) all look great on the big screen, and run smoothly. I haven't tried any games with a controller yet, but the size of the tablet is better for most of these games than on a phone.
I was concerned that games not designed for screen this size might be a bit crap or not run at all, but Kairosoft games (e.g. Game Dev Story, Grand Prix Story) actually benefit from the big screen (on my Galaxy S2 sometimes my fat fingers click the wrong things ).
My favorite Apps for this so far (only about 9 hours of time with it ) are Pulse and Youtube, both use the screen really well, I will be spending hours on those two in the coming weeks and months.
Generally the performance has been slick, not noticed any lag until I went on a site with quite a lot of flash on, then it did slow a bit. By default Flash is always on, but if you go to browser settings->Advanced->Enable Plugins you can set it to on-demand, which I think might allow you to say when an element should load.
Closing Comments
I was torn between this and the Samsung 10.1, but I think I have definitely made the right choice.
Wishlist
So far so good, but hopefully Sony will keep improving the device with software updates (like they do with the PS3 ). I would like to see..
Direct playback from SD card (currently you have to copy files to the build it storage using an app on the device).
Tighter PS3 integration, it would be great to use it as a remote play screen for the PS3. Also it would be cool to use the PS3 as a device to 'throw' content to (I will have to test again that this is not already there).
Oh and I hope that where possible PS1 games I buy on PSN will be usable on this device if they are released as PS Suite games (I hate having to buy the same games over and over *yes I am looking at you Nintendo*).
Update
Got it up and the first thing it wanted to do was download a system update of 183 mb. Anyone do this? I am trying it now.
And now after that it brings me to a page that says i can up to 3.2?? Anyone?
Get some pictures up too.

Great thread, love reading the impressions. Mine should arrive tomorrow or on Monday. Can't wait to use it! The reviews sound good so far. It will be nice when this tablet gets its own forum.
Tablet (and Forum) Newbie
I picked up the Sony Tablet S tonight. (Be gentle, this is my first post here and my first moments on the forum.)
Overall, I like it. Here are some thoughts:
Design:
The screen is beautiful. The colors are incredibly rich, there's no lag whatsoever, it's not choppy. It's like holding a miniature Sony television, and I love it. Easily on par with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (imvho.)
I actually really enjoy the folded design. Quite a few reviews have blasted Sony for going cheap on this, but like a previous poster said, it doesn't feel cheap - just lightweight, and I'm *very* okay with that. The design feels really nice to hold in portrait and landscape mode. It feels incredibly light, and I was packing it around like I would pack a folder. It feels very natural. It looks fine sitting on a coffee table too - the incline is just right.
Android:
I've had an HTC Evo 4G and currently have a Nexus S; Honeycomb feels very similar. I'm still trying to figure out how to add my widgets (doh!) but I'm sure it'll come soon. I've only been playing for about an hour at this point. It seems that Sony didn't screw with the UI - good on them.
I do miss the Android Market on my Nexus S - I just like the layout. It would look really slick on a tablet.
Sony Apps:
This ... blergh. I'm unhappy. Sony sucks ass for not having their Video and Music Unlimited apps/sites ready for this baby's launch. It's unacceptable to get something brand new, see their preloaded apps on the homescreen, clicking on the apps, and seeing, "Thank you for Choosing Music/Video Unlimited. Service for the Sony Tablet will be arriving soon. Keep checking back for more details." It looks very half baked, and was a terrible, terrible idea to include this prominently but not in an operable format.
On a positive note, Crash Bandicoot and the Pinball game are fun and fantastic. Yeah, iTards, enjoy "Hanging with Friends." I'll be playing Crash Bandicoot. It's a little pixelated, but overall, very cool. The controllers are considerably better than I thought they would be.
Battery life:
Haven't had it long enough to offer a real determination - it did get to 100% within about 1.5 hours, and it was at 20% out of the box. I knew this before I bought it, so it's not a judgement - but the proprietary charger is just lame. It's two separate pieces that have to be put together to charge the device. It's just silly and completely overkill.
Other:
SUPER sad that I can't seem to get Netflix on this baby. It would be pretty close to perfect if I could. However, I'm a fraidey cat and won't root this (It's my first tablet, and I'm not a techie by any means.)
Same with Skype video chat. It's cool that Google Talk comes with video support right out of the box, but I'd really love to be able to use something more universal. Fortunately, it sounds like Facebook may ultimately be the real universal vid chat provider in the near future, so hopefully won't have to wait long.
Still ... Netflix ... sadface.
Overall, I love this. I'm glad I purchased it over the other Android tablets I was considering, but I'm a bit nervous about how supportive Sony will be of this tablet in the long run; if they can't support it on it's first day out, who's to say they will be doing so in 5 or 6 months?
Not a bad tablet. Playing around with it I found how to get into android recovery. Power it down. Hold the power and volume up and down buttons until the Sony logo comes up. At that point keep holding down the volume buttons and let go of the power button. Keep holding the volume buttons until the recovery screen opens up. Its not much but just something I found. Now its time to figure out how to flash a custom recovery.

I have read this about Sony S:
- Wouldn’t let me load Divx-encoded AVI files.
- SD card slot can’t be used to expand the tablet’s built-in memory.
CAN ANYONE CONFIRM??

I am not sure about the Divx files. I will have to check into that. You may have to use a 3rd party app to play them.
I can confirm the sd card issue. I am thinking of taking mine back and getting a Xoom just for that reason. If you put your sd card in and want to access those files you have to use Sony's app to transfer them over to the "S" so you can use them. There is a work around, but it sucks. You can use a file explorer and navigate to sd card 2 (I think is what it is called) and play them that way.

For the SD card problem. I can open the file right away using the file transfer app, without transferring it to the tablet.

No native playback of divx, but they work great if u download an app called Rockplayer
Files on SD currently have to be transferred before u can playbsck, but sony have indicated that this might change with a future software update (sure someone here will beat them to it tho)

Performance issues...

Hi,
I was very happy to get the asus transformer prime. Switching menus, in app performance were very good...until i tried some very heavy browsing (espn.go.com/boxing for example or theverge.com). Let me tell you, the browsing on this thing is horrible. I really don't understand. Everything else is so fast, it is actually faster than my ipad 2 and samsung galaxy tab 10.1 for in app performance but when it comes to browsing, it is so sluggish. My samsung tab 10.1 on honeycomb kills it. I really wonder, will this be fixed in the next update or its just like that. I tried disabling flash, performance increases by 5x...is flash 11 not optimised for ICS? Also, chrome doesnt lag as much as the stock browser. How will this be fixed
Weel, Hw accel might be causing issues and if the site is mem leaking, that could also slow you down. And flash is optimized for ICS but I don't think its well done. Oh, and make sure you got performance mode enabled.
Sent from my tablet thing with XDA Premium.
I use mines in balanced mode and leave that hardware acceleration option in developers settings off. My browsers are super fast. Even stock. Really no matter which one I use. My favs. Are ICS+ browser and Boat browser. At the beginning stock browser use to be slow n i hated n hardly used it. Now after ICS, its fast as a mofo. Couldn't believe it. I use it alot now or ICS+ browser.

I am having same issue as you - very laggy browsing and even some lag in youtube/mail
I use Boat browser in balanced mode and it performs quiet well. I have to say at this point in time none of the browsers work as well as Chrome or Firefox on my Linux box. I suspect this will change as apps mature and optimized for ICS.
try opening more tabs
Personally everything is working super smooth on my prime. Tried checking out the websites mentioned and they all are super smooth on my prime.
I recall reading somewhere that it helps to open more tabs in the browser. That way all four cores kick in instead of using just the fifth core for low cpu usage apps and tasks.
Just a thought.

Are you still on honeycomb? I think the OP was since is the only reason i can think of why he has browser lag. Should be smooth on ICS. As far as youtube and email what kind of lag are you getting?

Chrome Beta in balanced or performance and its really fast, power save its still good but not as good.
returned prime
after resetting it several times and making a post here (which a mod deleted lol b/c i told the truth about the problems i had with my prime...i guess honesty is not allowed here?)
I ended up returning the prime back to staples.
it was running ICS latest ver shipped. i used chrome beta. i used dolphin hd. i used stock.
all of them were jittery and laggy. pinch zoom was even lagging.
My samsung galaxy was better in terms of performance.
Also, I bought a transformer tf101 last year..the orig ver.. and guess what? i had the same problems.
it was laggy...youtube vids were stuttering..browsing was weak... and now..with the new prime a year later..it still blows.
it was junk...web browsing on it was a joke...very laggy and just not very smooth in terms of scrolling ..it was just hard to use.
the colors on the screen looked faded out compared to other android tabs.
overall..just not a tab that u can depend on when youre in a hurry and need to check the web without having any glitches...
i ended up buying ipad 3. its way way better than prime..sorry guys..

Pretty much the same which you wouldn't expect comparing two different generations of CPU/GPU.

after resetting it several times and making a post here (which a mod deleted lol b/c i told the truth about the problems i had with my prime...i guess honesty is not allowed here?)
I ended up returning the prime back to staples.
it was running ICS latest ver shipped. i used chrome beta. i used dolphin hd. i used stock.
all of them were jittery and laggy. pinch zoom was even lagging.
My samsung galaxy was better in terms of performance.

cool story bro
Techreport did a review of the original Transformer with Ice Cream. They made several comments about the Prime with ICS having issues that wasn't in last years model with updated software.
I could look at charts showing how great the Tegra 3 is too but it won't make my studdering browsers go away.

last year model has its own ics issues that prime doesnt have. it was actually a huge problem. several tech articles on it. says just recently released a patch to hopefully fix it.
No device immune to sw issues.

Basically, unless apps are Teg optimized, the performance benefit isn't that dramatic. Games and local video playback will be greatly improved (over Teg2), everything else not so much. Nvidia never met their sales targets with Teg2 and, with it almost April, probably won't hit their already lowered Teg3 targets for 2012 either. They can show optimized benchmarks and a handful of optimized games playing exceptionally well all they want. If 5% of apps available are optimized it's all an illusion. App developers never rallied around Teg2 so there's no reason to believe they'll rally around Teg3 either. The S4 creamed Teg3 in all but optimized benchmarks which, in everyday use, is how most people will judge the performance of their devices.
And we already know that, in your mind, there never has been and never will be a tablet as fantastic as the Prime, a chip as stupendous as Teg3, or a chip maker as skilled as Nvidia. Let's go with that.
I just opened both webpages in eco mode and both loaded, scrolled and worked smooth.
I'm using stock browser and HW acceleration enabled.

This tablet is over hyped ???

I own a samsung galaxy tab 10.1 and also own a ipad 2.
I just bought a Transformer Prime tablet yesterday
...and its so buggy..I can't believe its being touted as the best andriod tab...(my samsung galaxy was better)
I'm an andriod fan...so I really want an andriod tablet that is as snappy and smooth as ipad 2.
in comes Transformer Prime. Everywhere I read how fast it is and how great the screen is and how it's an "ipad kiler".
Is it just me...or does this tablet fall really really short ?
(note: my wifi and gps both work fine...speed tested was 25 mb down ..same as my ipad/galaxy tab)
1. Although its fast to move between home screens, the tablet is noticeably laggy when using MOST apps: i.e: web browsing , youtube , mail.
- browser is slow to touch response, and is sooooo choppy/laggy...its just a total joke compared to ipad 2.
Browsing the web with this tablet is a total joke...I don't see how you guys do it?
My galaxy 10.1 was much smoother in comparison (which itself was a bit laggy)
- youtube works decently well...but the screen turns black when you rotate from landscape to portrait and vice versa...when doing this...there is screen flicker as it hides the rest of the screen ... lol so bad
- screen: super ips? are you kidding me? the colors look sooo faint compared to ipad2 and galaxy tab. The colors are the best on samsung galaxy tab... and worst on prime. And this is supposed to be a great screen? gimme a break...The font sucks...its so small n skinny...hard to read.
- Overall: its very slow! Main lag is web browsing...
- Market: I have no idea why they "updated" market to the new layout..it really sucks..and looks very cheap ..old one was much better imo
So, I'm obv ready to return this thing...but before I do..wanted to know if you all are experiencing these issues...or do i have a bad peice or what???
HI
My TF201 is very fast and smooth. It runs with Android 4.0.
Only the browser crashes sometimes (.15 Update).
My GPS has no signal, but who the hell needs GPS in a Tablet. I have a smartphone, much handier.
Overall, i would buy the TF201 again.

Here is some information for you.
1. Proper IPS screens are CORRECT. Over-colored Samsung screens are not. Better looking does not equal proper looking. When you print any image, it will be closer to your prime than your Samsung.
2. Did you update to the latest version? I never had any browser issues and its much faster than my iPad2 - on top of that, this is Android - put any god damn browser you like on it. Chrome although in beta, works great.
3. Put your tablet in performance mode.
4. Youtube does flikker sometimes, but only when typing in search. I've never had a black screen while rotating or whenever.
Overall, hhis tablet is much smoother than any other tablet - I'm a developer and I have them all - so I'm not just talking.
Somehow it makes me think you are using the prime in power saver mode - because this does make the display extremely ugly and the device laggy.
It must be you. My prime screams. Everything is perfect. The screen is bright. The fonts are pretty. No lag time. Hell even my gps and wifi work.
It has its issues but its a great tablet. Way better then the iFlop/2 or any other Apple product I have ever used, but that's my personal opinion. My browser is buggy so I stopped using it but that's a issue with ICS in my opinion all the ICS devices I have used have the problem. Use Chrome Beta (havent had one crash) or FF if you cant stand crashing. Youtube does that on my Thrive and my Inspire so its the app from my standpoint.
+1 for making sure your not in power save mode.
Also to traxxus I see you agree, you didn't buy this to be a 10" version of a Garmin did you lol.
Also why are you blaming the Prime for the market changing, that was Google's change not ASUS, every device is getting that update.
You probably dont have the same prime as i do^^ But hey you have the GalaxyTab and the Ipad2 why dont you just stick with them if they're better. Sell your prime and chill
Honest question, do you work for apple and were being told to come here and make bad posts about the prime? It just seems so obvious
(dont take me that serious)

Yeah I find this true as well. I for a brief time was looking at a ford mustang ( until I went to a showroom and tried to test drive and and a salesperson told me they don't allow joy rides. Little did that idiot know I make a six figure income and could afford it. I was 22 at the time but you never judge a book by its cover come on!) and yes, while on mustang forums all the camaro people came to the forum and spread their Chevy gospel lol.
So its perfectly normal.

Did you do a factory reset after updating to ICS? It's a known issue that you really need to do a full reset after upgrading. My prime was a nightmare at first, I mean every single program would crash repeatedly, stock browser was one of the worst offenders. I'd gotten the prime and upgraded to ICS immediately before doing anything on the tablet at all. Then I found someone mentioning doing the full reset after upgrading and I tried it and it was a night and day difference. I mean literally I went from a program crash every 5 minutes to once a day if that.
Give that a try before giving up. And if that doesn't fix it, it's probably a bad unit. The prime definitely has some problems and to be honest ICS isn't really a fully mature OS yet imo, but what you're experiencing is not the norm for a properly functioning prime on the latest ICS build.
And for all the people saying troll go home, maybe he asked in a somewhat antagonizing way but he has a legitimate gripe. What do you think is better for primes, androids in general and this guy specifically? Telling him to go away or maybe helping him solve what's obviously a problem with his specific prime and bringing another happy prime owner into the fold?
As a new prime owner, I'm kinda disappointed. Nevermind about the gps.
My main beef is it doesn't feel fast. My stock uk 2.3.4 Galaxy S ii feels a lot faster. I'm thinking large websites heavy graphics, the Prime's is struggling with i/o.

why do videos on web pages load faster on ipad2 than my overclocked TFP?

I got better BrowserMark and Sunspider benchmarks on my TFP running the latest Virtuous ROM at 1.6 ghz than my wife's ipad2. I'm happy with just about everything on my TFP except videos on web pages. When it comes to loading and starting video clips, ipad2 smokes my TFP. For example, click on any videos at cnn.com website. Ipad2 loads and plays them much more quickly. I went to Best Buy and played with the Acer, Toshiba, Samsung tablets. They are all like my TFP. I wonder what Apple did to make ipad2 so fast in this department. Guys, don't tell me "Get an iPad2". I'm an Android guy. I'm curious why and how. Can Android one day match it, i.e. if it's not just hardware?
I'd suggest that the Android tablets are all playing Flash streams, whereas the iPad is playing H264 streams specifically optimised for it (as it doesn't play Flash).

Dave

Very much so...
it's magic from the Foxconn factories. See, Foxconn bought the land not knowing it was laden with magical properties.
These magical properties are passed on to the iDevices, making them magically faster at rendering h264 than the TP can render flv streams.

fair enough. one possible reason is because when you go to the site on the Ipad, it goes to the html5 version, which Ipad optimized for. when you go to same site on prime, its different and uses flash instead. Ipad doesn't play flash video so it automatically plays any html5 videos.
that's the reason. when you go to the same site on both devices, they aren't loading up the exact same thing. different versions of the same site.
it could depend on what browser you using on prime. IMO, stock browser sucks. Fastest one is Opera mobile and I've found it to play flash videos the best and fastest also.

@foxmeister already answered why. Those sites are optimized for the iPad, whereas the Prime is running Flash video. As to whether Android will ever catch up, sure, when all sites are converted to HTML5 for video. Until then, we have to be satisfied with a wider variety of video (more sites still support Flash video than are optimized for the iPad) but lesser performance in some cases.
I suppose it's just frustrating to see so many iPad - Prime comparisons that I knee-jerked a reaction. My apologies.
Change your UA string to iPad and try again....
Know what? Lot of these browsers let you choose the user agent: have you tried, say, Boat Browser set to iPad?
Just wondering, I haven't played with it much and it seems to like to crash with a lot of videos, but it's worth a try to play around and when it does actually work it feels pretty good.
Uninstall flash

You don't even know what comparing apples to oranges means. I'm comparing the same video running on the same website. How's that comparing apples and oranges? "Our forums"? Really? You can't even read. Xda members are not dumb and unhelpful like you.
On CNN, if you access it with TFP (with User Agent set to Desktop or Android) and Windows 7, you get their video in Flash; with iPad, I'm guessing it's something else, probably H264/HTML5 like a couple of members said, which starts significantly faster, about 20-30 secs faster than the TFP on a side-by-side, and still faster than my wired Intel i5 1.6Ghz 4G RAM Windows 7 HP Folio notebook. CNN obviously has optimized a version of the site for iPad. But damn, it's really fast.
It's a similar situation on CNET. Flash for TFP and Windows 7, something else for ipad. The site's video starts faster for ipad but not as that much as on CNN. I guess not as optimized as CNN for iPad.
When I set User Agent to iPad on both ICS Browser+ and Dolphin HD. Video on CNN starts a little faster but still nowhere at the speed of iPad. I guess I will user iPad mode for the User Agent setting.
On sites, like Engadget, that has YouTube videos, videos start at about the same speed with iPad a tad faster. But when it comes to strict Flash video, I don't have to say it, but iPad is out of luck.
Another thing is iPad's robustness. My TFP has rebooted 3 times during my little tests while iPad is playing the vidoes merrily, going back and forth full screen to windowed screen. Don't tell me you don't want videos to start fast and be robust. I love Android for its enormous possibilities and choices so I can live with a few crashes, some lagginess here and there. I do want to have eventually a complete fast, smooth, and robust experience. I know there'll be a lot of people saying I'm wasting my time. But I think Google, Android developers should hear this more often, get competitive guys.
I use Dolphin religiously and Desktop user agent w/o AdBlock is going to get you pretty awful performance on any Android tablet.
Android user agent is most definitely the best way to go. Tried using Netflix's website on iPad ua and it was completely unusable. Couldn't even look at movie summary pages.

Buying a Player 4.0 in a few months, would like tips

Hello . So I've wanted a smart device for a while, and It looks like the galaxy Player 4.0 will be able to fill that gap quite nicely, when I have enough money to get one in a couple of months. Anyway, what I was wondering is if you guys have any tips for me about buying, or just about using the player. I'm thinking about buying from amazon, along with an invisible shield for the screen and a case by Ringke. Also, I've set up a Google voice account to use with GrooveIP to get a sort of WiFi phone thing going on. I'll have to test it, but I think it will work. Suggestions / tips / warnings?
-Thanks!
P.S. I'm hoping by the time I get the player, team SuperNova will have a daily usable version of their ICS port (Right now it has no deep sleep, so low on battery life).
(After seeing custom themes, I've been making a mock up in GIMP, but I can't post the link as I have less than 10 posts)
Go on ebay and u can find lots of cheaper cases for sale around 3-7USD.

It depends of the device variant. His is an internationnal one so it came with 2.2.2 or 2.2.1. He needs to use odin or heimdall to update his player.

All I have to say is don't buy a Ringke case. I had mine for exactly 3 months, and on the upper left and right hand corners it ripped lol. I suggest getting a TPU gel case or HIGHLY recommend getting a Nillkin case seen here http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nillkin-Sof...t=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item3a79b544cb. They both cost about half the price of the Ringke case and are way better in terms of durability. All I have to say is make sure that the screen protector you choose fits. Mines I had to trim a bit off lol, but it is reusable (water install) so that is fine.
I can vouch that GrooveIP and Google Voice work very well on this device. I use it as a wifi phone all the time. At college it connects to the internet easily and calls are clear and loud. I can text using the Google Voice app too so it is all good. My only issue with this device is the limited ram. So if you have too many apps open be prepared to deal with some extreme lag. So I suggest having like 1-3 open at a time, and going to task manager and closing out the ones you are not using.
guys help i tried odin nd kies but it doesnt detect my sgs player even i installed usb driver.. whats the possible problem?

I can't exactly remember how it looked, but it wasn't really bad. If you're used to some of the newer Amoled displays on the high end Samsung devices, you might not think it's very good, but I do know that the 4.0 screen IMO looks great, I loved it. I own a Galaxy S2, and I honestly couldn't tell any real difference from just glancing at them.
Well, I guess I'll wait till I buy to decide whether to get the 4.0 or the 5.0. If hanthesolo's build is far enough along. (HW acceleration/Deep sleep)

the galaxy player 5.0 has the same resolution and stock build.prop dpi setting as the 4.0 but the 5.0 has a lower physical ppi.
I've got the 5.0, and you can see the pixels if you look for them, but it's not bad. If you plan on using the micro sd card slot a lot, the 5.0 has easier access I think (I Belle the 4.0 has to go through the battery panel). The screen size is great for sharing text and video, letting two or more people see it with ease. My wife has regularly preferred top read off my player than her Samsung Stratosphere.
As far as a case, I'm not sure you need one. I've had mine since February, and while it's taken some heavy falls, the worst it has to show is a little marring of the plastic where it hit the concrete and a hairline crack in that corner. (You really have to squint to see the crack).

Just piggybacking off what Obscuresword said. Google Voice is fantastic on the Galaxy Player. GrooveIP sounds better on my end than my cell phone, but I have heard some callers complain that I echo and no amount of playing with the settings has changed that. Also, he is spot on when mentioning the multi-tasking. For a device that no one really cares about it can do some pretty amazing stuff...but when it gets bogged down don't expect any amount of snappiness whatsoever. It was sold as a media player and has barebones hardware to match that description. This is no SGIII.
Knocks on the hardware aside the end result is this: I leave a dumb phone in my car(for emergencies) and take my 4.0 with me wherever I go.
I have a 5.0 and my dad has a 4.0 and here are the differences.
5.0 has more battery life than the 4.0 and usually lasts longer.
The sound chip on the 4.0 is much nicer than the one of the 5.0.
Both of them can do the same job, although I would suggest using LCD Resolution to make it look better.
You have two speakers on the 5.0 rather than the 4.0.
That aside, the main difference is the form factor which can turn some people off. My local best buy has the 4.2 and 5.0 on display so I would suggest going there to see how big they are. The 4.2 is like the 4.0 only with a newer Android OS 2.3.7?. That adds docking features and updates some of the Google Apps but nothing big.
I would suggest getting case and screen protector when you can get it. They help a lot. Also check out the roms and kernels and see what you like. That might persuade you one way or another. I wouldn't suggest the 3.5 as its screen resolution is bad but its very small.
Apps
Groove IP/Google Voice (You can make calls on your tablet)
HeyWire (txting app)
With these two you have mostly a phone, except it can't get on 3g networks and the like.
Titanium Backup Very useful since you can downgrade your apps, make backups of your apps and freeze system ones that you don't really use without uninstalling them.
PowerAMP Great music app that I use. I love it but try it before you buy it.
Hope this helps.
