Buying a Player 4.0 in a few months, would like tips - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Hello . So I've wanted a smart device for a while, and It looks like the galaxy Player 4.0 will be able to fill that gap quite nicely, when I have enough money to get one in a couple of months. Anyway, what I was wondering is if you guys have any tips for me about buying, or just about using the player. I'm thinking about buying from amazon, along with an invisible shield for the screen and a case by Ringke. Also, I've set up a Google voice account to use with GrooveIP to get a sort of WiFi phone thing going on. I'll have to test it, but I think it will work. Suggestions / tips / warnings?
-Thanks!
P.S. I'm hoping by the time I get the player, team SuperNova will have a daily usable version of their ICS port (Right now it has no deep sleep, so low on battery life).
(After seeing custom themes, I've been making a mock up in GIMP, but I can't post the link as I have less than 10 posts)

Go on ebay and u can find lots of cheaper cases for sale around 3-7USD.

Like the poster above me, i thought the SGP 4.0 came with at least 2.3.5? Mine did. Also, can't you use the OTA update via settings=>About Deviice=>software update?

It depends of the device variant. His is an internationnal one so it came with 2.2.2 or 2.2.1. He needs to use odin or heimdall to update his player.

The groove ip app looks good. I haven't tried it because google voice isn't available in my country.

All I have to say is don't buy a Ringke case. I had mine for exactly 3 months, and on the upper left and right hand corners it ripped lol. I suggest getting a TPU gel case or HIGHLY recommend getting a Nillkin case seen here http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nillkin-Sof...t=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item3a79b544cb. They both cost about half the price of the Ringke case and are way better in terms of durability. All I have to say is make sure that the screen protector you choose fits. Mines I had to trim a bit off lol, but it is reusable (water install) so that is fine.
I can vouch that GrooveIP and Google Voice work very well on this device. I use it as a wifi phone all the time. At college it connects to the internet easily and calls are clear and loud. I can text using the Google Voice app too so it is all good. My only issue with this device is the limited ram. So if you have too many apps open be prepared to deal with some extreme lag. So I suggest having like 1-3 open at a time, and going to task manager and closing out the ones you are not using.

guys help i tried odin nd kies but it doesnt detect my sgs player even i installed usb driver.. whats the possible problem?

Don't get the 4.0
My advice get the 5.0 more deb support and a ton more real estate for games and movies, I know youll say it's only for music but you WILL use it for more, just do yourself a great favor and get the 5.0

My main concern about the 5.0 is the larger screen is the same resolution as the 4.0. Does the DPI/pixel resolution look good on it?

I can't exactly remember how it looked, but it wasn't really bad. If you're used to some of the newer Amoled displays on the high end Samsung devices, you might not think it's very good, but I do know that the 4.0 screen IMO looks great, I loved it. I own a Galaxy S2, and I honestly couldn't tell any real difference from just glancing at them.

Well, I guess I'll wait till I buy to decide whether to get the 4.0 or the 5.0. If hanthesolo's build is far enough along. (HW acceleration/Deep sleep)

the galaxy player 5.0 has the same resolution and stock build.prop dpi setting as the 4.0 but the 5.0 has a lower physical ppi.

I've got the 5.0, and you can see the pixels if you look for them, but it's not bad. If you plan on using the micro sd card slot a lot, the 5.0 has easier access I think (I Belle the 4.0 has to go through the battery panel). The screen size is great for sharing text and video, letting two or more people see it with ease. My wife has regularly preferred top read off my player than her Samsung Stratosphere.
As far as a case, I'm not sure you need one. I've had mine since February, and while it's taken some heavy falls, the worst it has to show is a little marring of the plastic where it hit the concrete and a hairline crack in that corner. (You really have to squint to see the crack).

Just piggybacking off what Obscuresword said. Google Voice is fantastic on the Galaxy Player. GrooveIP sounds better on my end than my cell phone, but I have heard some callers complain that I echo and no amount of playing with the settings has changed that. Also, he is spot on when mentioning the multi-tasking. For a device that no one really cares about it can do some pretty amazing stuff...but when it gets bogged down don't expect any amount of snappiness whatsoever. It was sold as a media player and has barebones hardware to match that description. This is no SGIII.
Knocks on the hardware aside the end result is this: I leave a dumb phone in my car(for emergencies) and take my 4.0 with me wherever I go.

I have a 5.0 and my dad has a 4.0 and here are the differences.
5.0 has more battery life than the 4.0 and usually lasts longer.
The sound chip on the 4.0 is much nicer than the one of the 5.0.
Both of them can do the same job, although I would suggest using LCD Resolution to make it look better.
You have two speakers on the 5.0 rather than the 4.0.
That aside, the main difference is the form factor which can turn some people off. My local best buy has the 4.2 and 5.0 on display so I would suggest going there to see how big they are. The 4.2 is like the 4.0 only with a newer Android OS 2.3.7?. That adds docking features and updates some of the Google Apps but nothing big.
I would suggest getting case and screen protector when you can get it. They help a lot. Also check out the roms and kernels and see what you like. That might persuade you one way or another. I wouldn't suggest the 3.5 as its screen resolution is bad but its very small.
Apps
Groove IP/Google Voice (You can make calls on your tablet)
HeyWire (txting app)
With these two you have mostly a phone, except it can't get on 3g networks and the like.
Titanium Backup Very useful since you can downgrade your apps, make backups of your apps and freeze system ones that you don't really use without uninstalling them.
PowerAMP Great music app that I use. I love it but try it before you buy it.
Hope this helps.

$260+ for 8GB has Samsung lost it!!

Does samsung really expect anyone to take them seriously when they charge over $260 for only 8Gb of storage. And a horrible resolution for the screensize.
There has to be some major alaising going on in most apps and games.
I want one really bad but not with only 8GB of storage.
Christ i can use that just in apps let alone music.
My one saving grace here is that i have a nice 32GB mSDCard not being used.
Really makes me mad that us cellular is in no hurry to bring the SG II to us customers. I guess maybe this will suffice until they do.
Voice your opinion
- are you happy you got it even though you probably already have an android phone?
- Are you killing your phone battery because you are tethering the player to your phone because its a nicer device to use for surfing, email, apps, games?
yeah, Im thinking about getting this player, but I might wait for the Galaxy Note, 5.3" super amoled I think plus easy removable battery. I dont mind carrying a battery or two in my bag
The Note is a phone not a tablet though.
So unless it comes to your Carrier you will be forking over some huge ol dollar bills for it.
I bet 600-700 or more.
I just received the 5.0 player ($30 less at Amazon), and now that I have it, I would have paid $260. IMO 5" is much better than 7" for portability (fits pocket). I have an Optimus-V phone that is just too small. The SGP5 gets me a nice 5" display, FM radio, "tons" more space than my phone (I have my phone rooted, but still there's only about 100mb left for apps... this thing has like 1.5gb for apps).... I still have 1gB after "filling it up". I added a 16gB card ($15), so I have 22gB free. My OV tethers to it in 5-10 seconds (I don't plan on using that much since I have wifi at home and work). I have no cell service at home, so the SGP5 on wifi with GrooveIP takes care of most of my phone needs. Sound quality is as good as most of the other larger tablets... no regrets whatsoever. Eventually, I'll probably go back to the VM Paylo plan at $5/mo... and all my needs will be met for $5/mo.

tcat thanks for that well written reply. thats the kind of stuff i want to hear.
along with any bad too bud i really doubt there is much bad to say aside from low storage and maybe resolution.
what do you think about the low resolution on that big of a screen?
are you seeing much jaggies or poor graphics where as your phone or other device may look better ?
Just got the Player 5 for $229.00 at Best Buy (check their on line store). Amazon had it for $229 too but now it's back up to $260. I would wait cause I think it is going to go back on sale soon.
I also thought about the Galaxy Note but it is going to be much more expensive OR you will need to have a cell contract with it. I got the Player to ditch my cell phone and make calls via Google Voice/Groove IP. I was a little worried about screen quality too but so far the screen quality has been fine - everything looks really good. Downloaded a game called Air Attack (or something like that) - a side scroller with WWII planes - and the graphics are impressive. Can't see how the graphics could be any better. Video, Angry Birds, etc. all look great.
Only downside so far is I thought the battery was user replaceable on the 5.0 - turns out it is only user replaceable on the 4.0. Hopefully, being a geek, I'll find a way to do it myself. That and I hope the custom roms become available for it.
Pardon my ignorance. I just stumbled upon this thread from new posts on the xda app on my phone. Is this sgp a tablet? What version of Android is it running?

Technically no it is an mp3 player.
But because it is a fully functional android device it has web browsing email and all the normal android goodies found on a phone (minus the phone, texting and good accurate gps, etc.)
Some people call it a tablet because it's 5 inches but in my eyes it's not even remotely close to a tablet
it does have gps but like all tablets without a cellular contract you have to be on wifi for it to work.and its not as accurate.
its a marketing/selling point. not something that is really very useful unless you can get on wifi and need directions to somewhere.
"Low" is all relative. Not like an Ipod, but my Dell PC screen is about 125dpi, this is like 180dpi. My Optimus-V is 160dpi. Some apps show jaggies worse than others (maybe not optimized for 800x480).. but overall it's very nice. Depends a lot on font also. The font in the Market really sucks, but system fonts aren't bad. I posted this on another forum, so far what my home screen looks like: (it's not quite as crisp as this, but isn't far off)

Doubts? Visit a store. Do not rely on reviews.
"Are you killing your phone battery because you are tethering the player to your phone because its a nicer device to use for surfing, email, apps, games?"
False.
At least in the case of the Galaxy i5500 that I use. No. It does not consume the battery.
Understand that when using the Galaxy i5500 so it stays in stanby. The battery is not consumed to any processing.
About resolution: it is great. Doubt? go to a store and test. If I had not done that maybe would not have bought and would be losing a good device like him.
About GPS: Yes, It works great. There are videos on Youtube with the G70 Galaxy 5.0 this function attached to a carrier. See for yourself.
About Tablet: Check the specifications of the 1010 Galaxy Tablet Wifi. You will see that the G70 is the same but with 5 ".

Nice to know that GrooVeIP works. Does anyone know if offline GPS software like Navigon or Copilot works? I'm EXTREMELY tempted to grab a GP5.0, especially with a $25 amazon coupon I have to lower the price even more.
The price is now $199 on Amazon for the 4.0

Copilot works ok, aside from the bugs present in the app.
I brought this from BestBuy for $239.00 with 8gb SD thown in for free but I already had a 16gb card.. So far I'm liking it I like the size of the screen for when I'm watching movies. Shadowgun runs well on it better than running it on my Kindle Fire for some reason. Love that I can use it has a phone with GrooVe IP and Google Voice install no drop calls a call quality has been very clear. Netflix runs well colors look a little wash out but it doesn't take away from watching a movie/tv show. Splashtop App works fine so if there is movie or music or wanting to watch hulu just remote into my computer. It starts a little jumpy but once it gets going works really fine. I use my Thunderbolt to tether to device.

i am being subjective because no tablet or tablet like device has a working GPS without a data connection.
several tablets like the acer iconia and asus transformer tried to make GPS work without a WiFi connection and it just doesnt work. the gPS needs a data connection in order to transmit and receive the data, mostly the map data but also for general functionality of the gPS.
you can alter the gPS config file to use different servers which help but in general without a wifi connection it is very very innaccurate and slow, taking 10 minutes or more to lock on.
now if you are in the USA and are telling me that the GPS on the Galaxy 5 is different and that it locks onto your location, is very quick (like it locks on in a minute or less) and is accurate with its location of where you are (within 10 meters, lets say. then i will retract my statement about GPS being useless with out a WiFi connection. - remember i said that you have to do with without a GPS connection, otherwise the GPS is useless because you will have to be around some sort of wifi, be it your phone hotspot, or something else.
and if you have to use your phone wifi hotspot then you might as well just use your phone.
as for everything else, then i am sorry i really dont understand what you were saying other than the screen resolution looking nice.
which i agree it does from the few times i have played with it in best buy. but i did not watch a movie or really play a game outside of angry birds lol.
i may go grab one from best buy tonight isnce its on sale for $236 but i just hate returning things, even if i dont like it, i want to do as much research as i can before i (may) waste anyones time.
also with regards to your statement
Understand that when using the Galaxy i5500 so it stays in stanby. The battery is not consumed to any processing.

that is absolutely false and especially if you have tethering turned on. it uses alot of battery to tether.
just because the screen is off doesnt mean its in standby. if it were in standby then tethering would not work.
the screen shut off thats all.
everything else is still running because tethering is active.
the cpu will probably throttle but only if it can.
if your tethering uses to much CPU then it will force the CPU to stay at a higher freq. and use up alot of battery.
plus the wifi and cellular chipsets are running full steam, so again, its just killing the battery.
what i meant to ask was... ."are you using it alot tethered to your phone, and thus killing your phones battery life?" meaning, recharging it alot sooner because normally would would not be tethering it.
I have Copilot Live Standard USA installed on my Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 and it works great. Used it for a half a dozen trips already. GPS locks on quickly (about 15-20 seconds). And because Copilot stores maps on the device, I don't need to have a connection to the internet. Routes get calculated quickly and if I deviate from the route, it recalculates quickly. This actually picks up my location and calculates routes quicker than my dedicated TomTom GPS (but its a few years old). The nice 5 inch screen makes it real nice for use as a GPS as well. This also seems to be vary accurate on my location and again it seems more accurate than my TomTom ever was.

This has not been my experience with the YP-G70. I use Sygic which is a standalone car navigation app. It works well and doesn't need wifi. It is true that if GPS has not been used for a while then the first fix can take a few minutes. However, after that, fixes occur in well under a minute. I wonder if you have tried a standalone GPS app on the YP-G70 and failed to get it to work, or whether you are basing your statements only on experience with other devices.

This tablet is over hyped ???

I own a samsung galaxy tab 10.1 and also own a ipad 2.
I just bought a Transformer Prime tablet yesterday
...and its so buggy..I can't believe its being touted as the best andriod tab...(my samsung galaxy was better)
I'm an andriod fan...so I really want an andriod tablet that is as snappy and smooth as ipad 2.
in comes Transformer Prime. Everywhere I read how fast it is and how great the screen is and how it's an "ipad kiler".
Is it just me...or does this tablet fall really really short ?
(note: my wifi and gps both work fine...speed tested was 25 mb down ..same as my ipad/galaxy tab)
1. Although its fast to move between home screens, the tablet is noticeably laggy when using MOST apps: i.e: web browsing , youtube , mail.
- browser is slow to touch response, and is sooooo choppy/laggy...its just a total joke compared to ipad 2.
Browsing the web with this tablet is a total joke...I don't see how you guys do it?
My galaxy 10.1 was much smoother in comparison (which itself was a bit laggy)
- youtube works decently well...but the screen turns black when you rotate from landscape to portrait and vice versa...when doing this...there is screen flicker as it hides the rest of the screen ... lol so bad
- screen: super ips? are you kidding me? the colors look sooo faint compared to ipad2 and galaxy tab. The colors are the best on samsung galaxy tab... and worst on prime. And this is supposed to be a great screen? gimme a break...The font sucks...its so small n skinny...hard to read.
- Overall: its very slow! Main lag is web browsing...
- Market: I have no idea why they "updated" market to the new layout..it really sucks..and looks very cheap ..old one was much better imo
So, I'm obv ready to return this thing...but before I do..wanted to know if you all are experiencing these issues...or do i have a bad peice or what???
HI
My TF201 is very fast and smooth. It runs with Android 4.0.
Only the browser crashes sometimes (.15 Update).
My GPS has no signal, but who the hell needs GPS in a Tablet. I have a smartphone, much handier.
Overall, i would buy the TF201 again.

Here is some information for you.
1. Proper IPS screens are CORRECT. Over-colored Samsung screens are not. Better looking does not equal proper looking. When you print any image, it will be closer to your prime than your Samsung.
2. Did you update to the latest version? I never had any browser issues and its much faster than my iPad2 - on top of that, this is Android - put any god damn browser you like on it. Chrome although in beta, works great.
3. Put your tablet in performance mode.
4. Youtube does flikker sometimes, but only when typing in search. I've never had a black screen while rotating or whenever.
Overall, hhis tablet is much smoother than any other tablet - I'm a developer and I have them all - so I'm not just talking.
Somehow it makes me think you are using the prime in power saver mode - because this does make the display extremely ugly and the device laggy.
It must be you. My prime screams. Everything is perfect. The screen is bright. The fonts are pretty. No lag time. Hell even my gps and wifi work.
It has its issues but its a great tablet. Way better then the iFlop/2 or any other Apple product I have ever used, but that's my personal opinion. My browser is buggy so I stopped using it but that's a issue with ICS in my opinion all the ICS devices I have used have the problem. Use Chrome Beta (havent had one crash) or FF if you cant stand crashing. Youtube does that on my Thrive and my Inspire so its the app from my standpoint.
+1 for making sure your not in power save mode.
Also to traxxus I see you agree, you didn't buy this to be a 10" version of a Garmin did you lol.
Also why are you blaming the Prime for the market changing, that was Google's change not ASUS, every device is getting that update.
You probably dont have the same prime as i do^^ But hey you have the GalaxyTab and the Ipad2 why dont you just stick with them if they're better. Sell your prime and chill
Honest question, do you work for apple and were being told to come here and make bad posts about the prime? It just seems so obvious
(dont take me that serious)

No but car manufacturers dont sue each other either just because their rear mirrors or steering wheels look the same.
The mobile phone/tablet industry often reminds me of babies in a sandbox argueing about who the molds belong to... And so do the users sometimes

Yeah I find this true as well. I for a brief time was looking at a ford mustang ( until I went to a showroom and tried to test drive and and a salesperson told me they don't allow joy rides. Little did that idiot know I make a six figure income and could afford it. I was 22 at the time but you never judge a book by its cover come on!) and yes, while on mustang forums all the camaro people came to the forum and spread their Chevy gospel lol.
So its perfectly normal.
To the op, yes it has some software problems but it is A KILLER tablet. Make sure you are up to date.
The prime is MUCH faster than my droid razr and its got a pimped out version of aokp. Much love for droid theory and crew!

Did you do a factory reset after updating to ICS? It's a known issue that you really need to do a full reset after upgrading. My prime was a nightmare at first, I mean every single program would crash repeatedly, stock browser was one of the worst offenders. I'd gotten the prime and upgraded to ICS immediately before doing anything on the tablet at all. Then I found someone mentioning doing the full reset after upgrading and I tried it and it was a night and day difference. I mean literally I went from a program crash every 5 minutes to once a day if that.
Give that a try before giving up. And if that doesn't fix it, it's probably a bad unit. The prime definitely has some problems and to be honest ICS isn't really a fully mature OS yet imo, but what you're experiencing is not the norm for a properly functioning prime on the latest ICS build.
And for all the people saying troll go home, maybe he asked in a somewhat antagonizing way but he has a legitimate gripe. What do you think is better for primes, androids in general and this guy specifically? Telling him to go away or maybe helping him solve what's obviously a problem with his specific prime and bringing another happy prime owner into the fold?
As a new prime owner, I'm kinda disappointed. Nevermind about the gps.
My main beef is it doesn't feel fast. My stock uk 2.3.4 Galaxy S ii feels a lot faster. I'm thinking large websites heavy graphics, the Prime's is struggling with i/o.

If your okay with Apple's limitations and price point then the iPhone isn't a bad choice. What limitations you ask?
-Non-removable battery
-Non upgradable memory
-Proprietary charging cable (not a con if you already own some)
-Can't sideload apps without jailbreaking
-Device choice
-Custom launchers, keyboards, widgets, etc
Some people want something that just works, but others want something they can tinker with and personalize and don't mind dealing with issues. Sort of like the car enthusiast who buys the classic muscle car that might need some work compared to the average car driver who buys something new and reliable.
Also try checking this out.
I can't remember this list I came across at the moment but go to google and type in 20 things iPhone users can't do that android users can. If I find it tomorrow I'll post it.

For me, the advantage of Android in contrast to Apple is that the most - and quite - Apps in the Play Store are for free.
One - and the almost - point is that you can change the battery in Android phones and in the iPhones series not. Also if your iPhone would be long used the memory effect takes effect and you can throw it away because repairing is more expensive than a new modell.
In Android phones you can change the battery if you have feeling that the battery lifetime is low.

indeed! plus a 3.5" screen is just too small these days...
You will love iPhone iOS if :
1.You want something that is working for you and you willing to live with the same thing for quite a long time.
2.You won't bother if your neighbour's phone, your school teacher's phone, your auntie's phone, your baby sitter's (if you have kids ) phone are having ALL THE SAME design for hardware and software.
3.If you think that a phone can represent your status in the social.
4.If you are a boss (just kidding... it might be true sometimes, at somewhere...)
5.If you always worrying people find out what you did in last summer.
You will love Android phones if :
1.You easily get bored with what the stock is having and wish that you can do something about it.
2.You can't sleep well for few nights thinking why your neighbour's phone UI looks exactly the same as yours.
3.If you think that a smartphone must capable of doing more things and having more freedoms than iPhone.
4.If you want to take control over the phone instead of letting it control the way you live with it. (e.g : remove system apps that you don't want from your phone)
5.If you don't mind someone knows what you did in last summer.

This is the way I've started describing it:
iPhone = Automatic transmission car: All you have to do is hit the gas and it goes, you don't have as much control but you don't really realize it because of how nice it feels and how easy it is to drive.
Android = Manual transmission car: You have way more control and the potential to have more speed and power if you are a good driver. But it's not nearly as easy as an automatic and not everyone can handle it.

i own a WP7 right now xD so it´s comparable with that Automatic transmission car either - nearly not customization- but works and the user doesn't realize it. And im sick of WP7 because they don´t have as many apps as all other OS' got. The second thing i hate about it is the way how you have to unlock it... COMPLICATED :/ ( i bricked my WP7 :'D ) - The third thing i hate about WP7 are the high prices for apps... ( 2,99€ for Doodle Jump -.- )
Android: custom Roms ( Lite'ning Rom for example - but unfortunately non of my friends is using a custom Rom for Android -.- ), easy sideloading, cheap apps ( dunno about the quality of the apps - if someone could tell me how the quality is like i would thank that guy - )
iPhone: high Quality apps, nice design, MUST HAVE PHONE

Well the beauty of Android is you can pick the screen size anything from just over 3" to 5". Personally I don't want anything much over 4" and like a keyboard so the Droid 3 was my best choice. Phones shouldn't be one size fits all and manufacturers will build whatever size phones sell. Large screens has been an untapped market so 2012 is the year of large screens. But as long as there is demand for < 4" screens then they will still be produced.

[Q] Incredible!! Will our EVOs have this kind of processing power as well?

So I came across this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAs3ZiPQl-U&feature=youtu.be&t=21m49s
It shows the sgs3 playing a video and running shadowgun at the same time seemingly flawlessly. I've always been pro-HTC, I went from the Touch Pro to the Evo and now I plan to get the EVO LTE. But despite my fanboyism, I have realized that HTC products usually don't perform as well as their samsung rivals in real world usage despite what the numbers and processors should theoretically be doing. I figured the Evo LTE and just about any high-end phone released in the past year can run everything on the market, who cares? Then I see something like this and it blows my mind. I'm almost tempted to jump ship.. but we'll see. What are your thoughts?

Agreed. At least for mobile phones... Could have some usage on tablets like taking a timed class and watching a video to pass the time.
The 24nm Krait S4 Snapdragon is a very capable chip. It should have no problems doing what you're video is doing or even running 2 HD movies simultaneously while running background tasks all simultaneously even on a screen as demanding as the new Evo's.
Samsung has done alot on the software side of things ..to me its more of a wow factor than something that I would ever use. If your in a store and stuck between two phones ..they show a gs3 doing pip and your sold ..not for me ..a cool but useless feature as well as the s talk or whatever it is ..I just don't imagine using it ..its a good phone tho ..you don't have to iuse those features ..to me the new evo is more desirable..and I believe the s4 is 28nm

You sir are correct, apologies for the typo. The Krait s4 snapdragons are indeed 28nm.
I have no doubt the EVO 4G LTE could do this, and probably the galaxy s2 as well. What I really don't know is why you would need or want to do this other than to showoff.

I think its far from pointless. People seem to assign the words "pointless" "useless" and "gimmick" to any feature that doesn't fit their personal lifestyle. Keep an open mind
Samsung says this is something new and groundbreaking that just came out with. BS!!! There is already an app in the Play Store that can do this on the phone in your hand right now. Check out app developers MBFG, I believe they may even be a XDA member. They have an app called OverSkreen that allows you to have a webpage on top of any other screen on your device. I use OverSkreen on my tablet and love it! They have another app that plays videos on top of any other screen just like the Galaxy S3, it's called Stick It! (and yes the "!" is part of the app's name, lol). Check it out. Funny Samsung lies saying how they created the idea an that the GS3 is the only phone that can do this, when in fact any Android phone with the app Stick It!! can do it!!!

The PIP function on the SG3 is not new. There is an app in the market called stick it, for $1.49 that does the same thing. I bought it a couple weeks ago, and it works very well, even though honestly, there isnt really any practical use for it. Many of the software tweaks that samsung is bui8ldin ginto the SG3 are impressive, but not original. You can duplicate just about every functionality they bragged about at the announcement with apps found in the market, or on custom roms readily available for most phones. Ultimately, because the US version will not have the quad core processor, and because i have always found samsung phones to feel cheap in my hand, im going with HTC, whose build quality is usually very good. Oh yeah, that and the pen tile screen on the SG3.... thats a deal breaker for me too

Theoretically, probably. In reality, probably not, if the EVO LTE has the multitasking issue that the ONE X has, which it probably will as HTC customized the multitasking to be so aggressive/ineffective. Really bummed about this. I hope all this is not the case. Show me wrong, HTC.

Cut my losses and go for a nexus 7

I can get £100 for my 16Gb wifi which makes the upgrade price to a nexus 7 8Gb only £65 in the UK.
For this I get ICS, quad core, IPS screen. But lose 8Gb and pen.
Is it worth it ?
I've been debating the same decision too, and with a PSP and zune lying around that I'm not using I might be able to accomplish it, but for some reason I just don't wanna part with this device. I'm torn honestly. I keep thinking why decide flyer or nexus when come christmas time I'll get my usual Christmas cash and I can have both
I guess its just I was eager to upgrade my phone and I sold ny captivate to pay for my HTC Vivid and now I regret it and miss the phone. No complaints with the Vivid but just regret missing out on some of the best development for it. And HTC has left it for dead but our developers are really breaking ground on it. Chaoses new ics Rom will be a beast after everything is working and ioiwillio really is putting together an awesome honeycomb Rom. So I do want the new nexus but at the same time I don't know if I'm ready to sacrifice my flyer to get one

Don't forget drew garen
I know one issue I have in parting with the flyer is quality and design vs a modern budget tablet. A year ago the flyer was a premium android tablet and one thing that threw me for a loop in a nexus was a review that said the speaker was really nice...emphasis on speaker not "speakers" like the flyer has. Pros and cons of the idea
Pros:
*more modern hardware
*lagfree
*Completely up to date
*software is handled by Google so no laggy sense ui and timely updates
Cons
*No pen support
*mono speaker
*build quality is good but HTC has the best
*No expandable Storage
*Front camera is in the wrong place
*No rear camera
*jelly beans 7 inch tablet ui is rubbish

I think I could part with my flyer now in favor of one, or I could wait and have both! What's better than an android tablet? 2 android tablets!

No pen support is what keeps me from buying any other device.
But if you don't use the pen, then yeah...I can see the upgrade being worth it.
Yeah nothing on the nexus tab is a deal breaker for me, I just am hesitant to give up the flyer so quickly not to mention I doubt I could get that much money out of it anyway
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda app-developers app
I did just that.
I preordered the Nexus 7 16GB from Google and put my HTC Flyer, Blurex case, installed Zagg invisible shield, box, cables, and all papers one up on ebay.
If anyone is interested, it's up on ebay for $159 and BUY IT NOW $187 for all.
BTW Thanks for all in this forum who have helped me with various things along the way.
Peace,
Jeff
I did the same! I listed my Flyer late Wednesday night on Gumtree and someone took it off me for £150 at half four yesterday Very quick sale!
I couldn't care about the camera, microsd slot and pen.. I never really used them! So ordered the Nexus 8GB just, Was going to go for the 16GB but I only used ~2.5gb on my Flyer.
Can't wait for them to ship!
I'm with you there on that stuff doesn't matter. I have an sd card in mine only because I got sick of having to take my phone apart every time I wanted to flash a Rom through recovery. All my media is on the cloud. And the camera really is just a toy imo, there is no useful purpose for one on a tablet, and besides my HTC Vivid has a much nicer camera anyway, 8mp dual led flash. Really what's killing the nexus tab for me is the terrible jelly bean UI. I just found out today no landscape mode, wtf? I mean yes in apps and games, but the homescreen is portrait only like a phone! So that mean all next gen 7 inch android tablets are just going to be glorified e readers? I personally rarely ever use portrait, god google is clueless

Haha! I prefer portrait mode actually! Plus, The phone UI is nicer on a 7 inch tablet.. I had an Archos 80 G9 before my Flyer and the tablet UI was nice and spaced out - On the Flyer it felt really cramped! Wish Google would release the case in the UK soon! Going to need one :L
I'd still buy one, and I still plan too actually, not a matter of if but when. Just don't see why its so hard to put the launcher in landscape auto rotate when 3rd party launchers have been doing this for years! I'll definitely be putting a custom launcher on mine

You guys will have to keep me informed how you like it. I will say the rubberized back is a plus. The flyer is slippery. I've had it slide out of my hands a million times.
After watching a review of the nexus tab on youtube, yeah its hard to complain about the UI too much, beause it looks gorgeous and moves like "butter", even if it isn't exactly the most tablet optimized UI. I wonder what its going to do to other cheap tabs now such as the Nook Tablet, Kindle Fire, and GTab2. The GTab2 seemed like a steal at $250 2 months ago, but now it seems way over priced considering the same price gets you 2 more cores, a more up to date version of android, double the storage, and an HD screen. Google has set the standard now for cheap tabs. Look for an Apple lawsuit soon lol.
The storage is a no go for me
Flyer
Haha! Do you know if the stock ICS launcher on phones rotates? I know from the G9 the Tablet one definitely rotates, Just not used ICS on my phones properly
Ugh I hate the Flyer's aluminium build so much! I can't stand the soft feeling when it moves in your hand haha! Had the leather hardback on from day one then switched to the leather journal case for when I took the tablet outside and a gel case for indoors haha. The official leather journal is well overpriced, Wish I had've bought an unofficial one with a stand!
Can't wait until they start to ship! Mines coming from Dublin, Ireland which is only ~130 miles from where I live so it won't take long to arrive!
Really odd how the case isn't available in the UK yet though -

It doesn't auto rotate, its pretty much the Galaxy Nexus Launcher with a larger grid. But oh well really, its android, and as people have said in other threads, who uses the stock launcher anyway? Nothing Apex or Nova can't fix
I always questioned the rear camera on tablets. I mean first of all its pointless, even a 7 inch tab is much to large to carry around as your digital camera, and the cameras they put on them are smartphone cameras anyway so its not something you want to carry around if your a serious photographer, and secondly its the most blatently obvious thing to get rid of when trying to bring the price down on a tablet! I mostly use my flyer's camera to irritate my wife, lol I have a sectional couch and I sit on the loveseat portion, and she sits on the couch, and I like to sneak and take picture of her to irritate her. She hears the camera sound and gets annoyed. And yep thats really what a camera is on a tab, just a toy.
Aw, Not a big deal anyway! Hey - I use the stock launcher on most devices LOL.
Yeah I never saw the point of the rear camera on the Flyer.. Used it once or twice, More a gimmick. Same can be said for the front facing camera! I used it twice, and it was to test Snapbooth, Nothing else! I don't video call or Skype so it's of no use to me!
With any luck the Nexus' screen is easier to see in sunlight than the Flyers' .. I couldn't see anything with the screen on 100%! I'm looking forward to the higher res screen.. The Flyer looks really pixelated when I look at my phone for long periods of time, And my phone isn't even that high res, 480*800 4" haha!
I'm really thinking about it now lol. My biggest complaint with honeycomb is the lag and i hate gingerbread because of ugly phone versions of gmail, YouTube, maps, gvoice, etc. My roommate's gtab2 is quick and responsive except for the ui which is kind of laggy. You don't get the honeycomb look with the nexus but you still get honeycomb style apps, and to some extent honeycomb is more made for larger tablets as those virtual keys are easy to bump when your playing games etc. I'm going to sleep on it. i might call up the used video game store and see how much they'd pay for a flyer, as i kinda wanna sell quick if i do it

oh nevermind that's really none of my business. please don't take this too seriously. I just find that to be odd and I'm just having a little fun.
God how I wish development wasn't dead for the view
