Recovery problem? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried everything and I keep getting back to the Samsung Recovery Utils. Instead of ClockworkMod Recovery.
And I've done all of the correct things as I see it, but there must be one thing I'm not doing right:
Download ROM Manager from the Market.
Flash Recovery.
Choose S2 as your phone.
Accept the Superuser prompt.
All, good. I've got the little Ninja in Black as (Superuser).
But, when I go to load a custom ROM from my flash drive, using ROM Manager, selecting Reboot into Recovery, it takes me to the "command prompt" of the Samsung Recovery Utils - for BML -.
And the only options I have are:
- reboot system now
- reinstall packages
- delete all user data
- delete cache data
I can't seem to get to:
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1
- reboot system now
- apply sdcard:update.zip
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- install zip from sdcard
- nandroid
- partitions menu
- advanced
Is there anyone that can tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

When I was on Gingerbread, my Nexus S had the same problem. Couldn't really find a fix so I kept flashing recovery via fastboot. I guess sometimes it just doesn't work.
ICS fixed that.

So why the hell are you doing the above? (using ROM manager for starters, and selecting Vibrant). Anyway, let's try again, do you actually have the SGH-T989? http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1329

You still didn't really answer the question, but whatever. If you're absolutely 100% sure you have a GT-I9100 and you want CWM recovery, you need to flash a kernel which includes it. Such as CF-Root, or pretty much any of the custom kernels.

Which kernel for CM7 ?

Hi there
I have tried to install CM7 yesterday and my SGS2 doesn t start. i have done the 3 wipes under CWM. So my question is which Kernel, firmaware... do i need to work properly with CM7 ?
I use XXKI3 and kernel blackheart 666 with cwm 4.2, darky rom.
Thx
I think you should use codeworks (not sure on spelling) CWM.. I think it has it's own kernel and you can root using SOC..

Download and flash this kernel
Download the newest nightly from here and put it into your internal sd card
Boot into CWM recovery
Wipe cache/data/dalvik cache
Flash the CM7 zip
If you get stuck at a bootloop reboot into CWM recovery and flash the CM7 twice.
Thx but how i boot in recovery mode with CWM.

if i was you id take JJE advice and do reading before you go ahead and flash. also to be able to get CM7 you need to be able to use ROMmanager Premium to download the nightlies as far as i use it.....
but anyway if you have CWM go into your apps click on CWM then scroll to reboot phone into clockwordmode recovery and press that and then your into recovery..
but seriously if i was you id watch videos on youtube on how to do it and read the guide that JJe has gave you

[Q] How to have Speedmod kernel and Root?

U can flash it again or install superuser from market.
If u can't use apps then, ur phone is really not rooted.
But the apps just asking for permissions,so it just can be the missing superuser

Installed superuser from the market and its showing an empty list so clearly my phone is not rooted.
In the thread it suggested to flash Chainfire's kernel then flash Speedmod again, going to do that now

Hmm crazy.
1) U tried to flash via odin?
2) If also doesn't root device, reflash ur Rom.
Think there must be a fold in system then, which let not root.
Go in "mount & storage" and format system there. Then flash Rom again.
If also no luck u have to wipe all!
But think with a clean system and reflash rom, at least it should work.
Much success!

yes, re-flash the ROM/firmware may solve that problem.
I also have bad experience using the 'fix permission' thing. I did 'fix permission' from CWM recovery. Although CWM said it success to fix the permission, but then make all application FC. Then I re-flash the ROM.

I wouldn't have tried this as your phone is i9100P, although I know the difference isn't that big.
Also, was your phone rooted? It had to have been rooted beforehand.

That's your problem. You were on 4.0.3, which is ICS.
The instructions at galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-rooted-galaxy-s2-i9100/ don't specify, but they are for Gingerbread ONLY. The recovery kernel contained within that zip package is ClockworkMod Recovery 4.0.1.4, which is for Gingerbread.
This thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693) is the updated version of that recovery kernel for ICS.
You don't have to flash the full firmware, just flash a kernel that is meant to work with ICS and you should be fine.

Thanks for the advice - but i already have the stock ROM on an SD card so i think i will flash this. Problem is i cannot get CWM to read from the external SD card, so i cannot locate the zip and install it - help?
EDIT: if i install the kernel you gave me the link to ([KERNEL][ICS] ClockworkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4) , will it remove the root access i had?
EDIT 2: I have just flashed the kernel via odin, and it finally got past the screen with the yellow triangle! However, it is now stuck on the second screen which shows the 'S' logo with the words 'Samsung Galaxy SII' under it. Any more ideas?

No. That download is for a package that must be flashed while the phone is in download mode. That will require you to use a computer, and a flashing tool, such as Odin or Heimdall.

Well I think Chainfire's CF-Root kernels (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399) are not for i9100P, so not sure if he can achieve permanent CWM recovery. Anyway if he don't plan to flash every hour new ROM he should be fine with latest temporary CWM 6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840223 although will ask Phil about compatibility.

wiping data will not format your internal mem. or ext sd. just put the rom you want to install to your internal sd>reboot to recovery>wipe data, Advanced>wipe dalvic cache> Install zip from internal sd> select the zip file you copied> Reboot
