So how much data do you norm use? How much have you ever used? What are your typical data speeds?
Previously for me, the most I had used was just over 25GB in one billing cyle (im grandfathered in for Unlim data).
Well this month I wanted to see what kind of damage I could do. Eventhough I didnt start using HEAVY data till the 18th of Jan (my cycle is the 1st-1st), I still used A LOT.
Keep in mind that not even 1 full GB was due to tethering. It was almost 100% on my phone.

Holy hell... certainly getting your moneys worth, eh? lol
I'm at 57.523 GB on VZW for this cycle....
We had some annual refresher training for work...and all my buddies were using my hotspot. And I do use it for my tabs also.....and I flash a lot of roms so therefore have a lot of downloads.
I've been a long time customer of VZW (approx 15 years) and normally I avg 5 to 10gb per month, but this darn 4G is so addicting.
Wow, you guys are insane (in the good way). I barely pull a measely 1GB monthly on my phone. Perhaps I should start tethering my phone to my laptop and watching Netflix shows regularly.
I did 4 last month, and I had 4g for 2 weeks max. I use Wifi a lot, so that cuts down on my data use..

So as we all know.. last billing cycle i used over 100GB of data.
Today i went in and dropped off my parents plan, my wife dropped Sprint and we started our own plan. I made sure that my unlim data was staying with me.
So everything was taken care of and while we were setting up my wifes new phone, she picked up the Droid 4, the rep who was helping us said he had to take care of something urgent on our plan. Ummm ok...
So after the phone was done i walk over to him and ask whats up. He said the unlim data didnt stick annnnnnnnnnnnd ive got an overage charge from data.

This is just blatant abuse of the unlimited data plan. No offense but I'm also rooted and have the free wireless tethering app and I barely go over 5gigs/month. Why anyone would purposely be a big humongous blip on Verizon's radar and openly brag about it is beyond me. I believe most of us that are rooted try to fly below the radar like me and not abuse the unlimited data plan. Like I said no offense, but it was customers like you that was one of the many reasons why the big wigs in big reds glass towers decided to end the unlimited data plan and move towards the tiered data plans.

Ive heard of ppl CONSISTENTLY hitting 50+ gigs month after month..
I did this just to see at what point they would throttle me.. and it never happened.
Even on a normal month just using Netflix, few hours of Pandora each day, and torrent a tv episode a couple times a week.. Im regularly hitting 6-10 GB with ZERO tethering.
lol $52,000 holy crap man!
Well my post earlier I topped out at 68gb....and I'm only at 1GB this cycle
I had a lot going on the last cycle to bring it that high. I mean I have to purposely try to get above 10 to 20 gb....
Wow 102 GB is insane. .. I use an avg of 4 GB per week . Data is cheap in Airtel India ..
4 GB comes around 6 dollars.

unlimited for now...they could change it eventually
Well if it's anything like the 3g plan I had on my eris before it's truely unlimited. A lot of rumors where out there that said they would cap you or turn off service after 5gigs and it's total bs to scare you. I use 10+ gigs month after month and I was never capped, threatened or throttled. Granted I was stock using pda.net and it was totally doable.
So go balls to the wall!
it is truely unlimited but if you go crazy they may throttle you
Awesome, good to hear. Thanks for the responses.

I'm not 100% sure if this is accurate or not..but I believe being on an old Alltel plan still, mainline being a business line, I believe, and then my added line...I TRULY am unlimited on 3g and 4g (Bought a THunderbolt to grandfather in) and not Verizon's "Reserve the right to throttle after 5 gigs unlimited" since I don't believe that was mentioned in Alltel contracts.
Also...it's possible I may have unlimitted tethering as well. Tethering isn't mentioned anywhere in the contract...but that's the lookhole. IF you all remember just 4-5 years back, anybody could tether a phone to their computer as a modem for internet without having a plan. It just wasn't a big deal since the data explosion hadn't taken off yet.
I have yet to be able to confirm this and can find very little information regarding it. Anyone in a similar situation or have any knowledge on the issue?

I had no home internet connection for about 4 months so I really didn't have any other choice. And it is really easy to hit that much data and I would hit more if 3g didn't suck so bad for videos streaming and the such. But for online gaming it wasn't to bad if you can stand 200 pings.
I have a question for you guys sorry to thread jack. But I decided i'm switching to Verizon for the HTC Thunderbolt. If I wanted the unlimited data for 29.99 do I have to buy it this month or would I be okay switching over to Verizon next month?

I've noticed my data speeds getting slower over the past few days. I thought it might have been the new Atrix Rom I am running. However, I just read an article from Droid Life and it seems Verizon is now trying to throttle the data usage.
Does anyone know if we have any way to remove the data throttle from the Droid X2?
Thanks
Data Throttling is typically done on the carrier-side of things, meaning that modifying the phone itself won't accomplish anything.
It's similar to how they filter out certain apps from the Android Market; there's no way for us to get around them doing so, because the data is filtered before it ever reaches the phone. The best we can do is use a different source(i.e, Wifi) to access it.
The same principle applies to throttling.

They might give you a option to get off the contract if you are being throttled, but remember if you do so you would never be able to go back and get the unlimited data package. When i worked for clear(4G wireless company) we had a process called N.I.M.S (network integrity management system) which means a stupid computer that was programmed with different levels and data usage values and if you went above these values guess what you just got on the N.I.M.S list and when you get on it once you never get off, sad i know but its true. I recently got fired from there because the closed all the US call centers and the moved the operations to the Philippines, damn US government to allow moving jobs over sea's :'(
Forgot something, the policy at clear was that if you were on the N.I.M.S list you were able to get out of your contact with no early term fee's. But you worry not allow any kind of refund for the most recent bill cycle and i mean NONE even if you paid the bill less than a week ago, you would get denied of a refund.

I seriously doubt it's 5% of anything, I think Verizon throttles all of it's customers on the fly when the system sees a heavy data usage beyond a certain amount of time (Example, streaming) regardless of data plan.
I have unlimited data, this month I have only used 267MB of data on their network, streamed some ESPN the other night, and what do you know... throttled.
Verizon is a bunch of liars and cheats... that said, I do my share also. Thanks Verizon.

How can u tell when u r throttled?
And I remember seeing a file called throttle or similar when going through root explorer one day. I forget where but I will look again tomorrow ...man I should be sleeping right now
I swear if I been getting throttled and I have only been a customers for few months I will snap on some reps lol
you can take this as you want,
belive me or not, but i went to a verizon store to get replacement droid x2, and me and this tech got talking, he had his phone rooted with custom roms and the whole lot, and knew alot about rooting, he told me they throttle you on the phone aka software, if you run custom com and are rooted, you wont get the throttle problem.
I was going to buy full price for the droid bionic, but he told me that verizon will get the Samsung galaxy S II phone, i dont think it will happen but he knew what he was talking about.
but overall take it how you want it.
but when i was running Eclipse 5 i hit on download speed 1.7mbps/800kps upload, the lowest i hit was 1.2mbps/500kps upload.
This is probably my lowest month ever, but I use my car dock to play Google Music in my car and I stream it. This month in 26 days I have only used 1.16GB of Data and on the outside of town I am getting 1.6mbps down 253kbps up on Eclipse Rom.
Okay I found where I saw throttle before in root explorer
/data/system> there is a folder named throttle with two script type files in it.
Anyone else have this? Know what it is?
I had thought it may be something to do with our cpu but I have np idea lol

If that is true this is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen.
Ok so i hit 10GB today on my phone and now am being throttled down to 100K-200K.
Anyone else have this happen?
Well, AT&T is known to throttle the top 5% of data users (w/ the grandfathered unlimited data plan). You must be in the top 5%.
How do you know you are being throttled? Did you get a text?
250 KB/s is good speed in my neck of the woods, even with full bars of H+. My normal is 150-200.

There is an icon baked into the notification icons labled throttled something. Does it put the icon in your notification bar when they throttle?
10 GB wouldn't be that hard. I use 6ish on a normal month with mostly Pandora, and a few ROMs or podcasts. I don't tether.
Personally I wish they would just announce a soft cap. If I knew I got full speed up to 5 GB, then got throttled it would be easier to manage than a moving target such as "top 5%".
You can check your data usage several ways. *data# (type into dialer, press call, get a text) would be the easiest. There is a myAT&T App, or the full website.

Its funny because I remember how difficult it was to convince customers to get a smartphone because at the time, unlimited data was the only thing available. Now, its as if everybody and their grandmothers want unlimited data and fight dear life to keep it.
Anyways, I just think the smartphone industry just blew up too quick to sustain the growing amount of smartphone users on its network.

10 GB is a lot of data, but I have always been bothered that my "unlimited data" plan wasn't quite unlimited. But at least I don't think I'll have to worry too much about reaching that limit.

The throttling was effective only like a month or so ago.
its hard that all the wireless companies are moving towards tiered data while technology is moving to cloud services which contradicts one another...
Just remember though that theyre only throttling high data users because high data = more bandwidth used = less avail bandwidth/speeds for everyone else in your area.

Gee where have you been??? There is no unlimited data roaming. You need to read the fine print or even listen to the commercials they state it very clearly in the commercials that unlimited data on smart phones is on Sprint towers only. People have been getting their accounts terminated by Sprint for excessive data roaming for the last couple of years. Do a search of all forums and you will probably see a lot of threads. In fact if you want to get out of your contract that is one of the easiest ways. Install a Verizon PRL and go crazy on the data. Careful though, it also states in your contract that Sprint can bill you for the overage.

Careful though, it also states in your contract that Sprint can bill you for the overage.

They billed me 146 biggens in May when I joined for voice overages. Didn't realize it was only on the Sprint towers. Litterly I saw a month later them saying it on commericals.

Wow. EXACTLY the same thing just happened to me today. Said it was for excessive data roaming which is bull**** because my sister had more roaming data and she still has service. My only guess is that it is a blanket excuse if you use a lot of regular data because they can't cancel you for that. Extremely bummed out and pissed about this right now.
EDIT: this last pay period was the only time I have roamed on data for this phone. They said they sent out 3 warning but we didn't receive any. Sorry if this sounds ranting or anything, I am just really frustrated with the whole situation.

sorry to hear that but i am actually trying to get the boot on purpose. how much data did you have to use? I used 17 gigs roaming last billing cycle and im going to do as much as i can this cycle just need something to shoot for.
I wish 4G counted towards roaming :/ I need the boot from Sprint too lost my job a couple months back

Pretty good way to get your accounts terminated. Sprint has zero tolerance for using their network for torrent downloads.... if they catch you, no warning. Just toast.

Just hope they boot you and thats it, you could get the boot and charged for how much data you've used on top of it.

ROFL at this thread.
It's just funny how there are people on both ends of the spectrum:
One side is using too much data, not reading the contract, and getting booted for it.
The other side is using too much data, has read the contract, and is trying to get booted for it.
Nobody is talking about the fact that both sides are hogging the network and slowing down data for everyone else out there (whether Verizon's or Sprint's network). But hey, at least your going away.

this is why sometimes i miss tmobile
and then i think about the 4 month straight throttle they threw on me
they couldnt even call of their beast when i was suppose to be unthrottled
and on that note i couldnt imagine paying outrages overages on data that verizon and ATT charge
thank god for the happy median  sprint

I kinda agree. I'm not a goodie goodie by any means but clogging things up by running a torrent all day deserves more than just a boot IMO

He is violating 2 terms of conditions, not only one doing this. Chances are you were also warned before hand. If you weren't warned before hand then I believe the OP violating the ToS on two conditions is grounds enough.
I also don't understand why the OP put "usage on an unlimited plan" in the thread title. What does that have to do with his termination? Surely it is for empathy but I don't think he knew exactly he signed onto in regards to his excessive roaming use.
I think he was talking about me running the client
if it was an option i would gladly turn in my phone if they would let me out of my contract but its not. I have been lied to over and over about 4g coming to phoenix and i stuck with them because i knew it would get better. in the 18 months i have been with sprint not only have i been lied to about 4g coming but the 3g service has gotten to the point where its unusable. now sprint is changing over to lte that means my phone is pretty much useless its not a moral issue for me i refuse to pay for something im not getting.
Just thought I should share my thoughts regarding my latest warranty exchange....my WiFi was having issues on stock Rom unrooted so I called Verizon and see what they could offer.
Battery pull and network refresh(really? I didn't know WiFi was part of the Verizon network but OK)
Factory reset(I though alright atleast were in the right area....)
Finally she proceeded to order me a replacement while telling me that Verizon doesn't tolerate abuse of the network or altering of devices, I asked why do you believe its altered and where is this abuse of your network? she replies, you use an extreme amount of data that is not likely to be consumed soley on the phone.
I couldn't stop laughing, I HONESTLY asked her if she got that from an episode of CSI? I then told her my unlimited plan doesn't include a clause for intruding questions about assumptions on how I use my phone. She quickly backed off and gave me a tracking number for the shipping.
I just was truly caught off guard after the years of having my plan and NEVER being questioned like this LOL....just my interaction and wanted to pass it along
Out of curiosity how much data was it? If you'd happen to know ?

That's what I'm saying.
When I called Verizon the week of the DNA launch, I asked the local store if they would have any devices in on that day. The rep asked me if I was upgrading my line and if I was he tried to sell me the SG3. I told him I was not upgrading, I didn't want that pos, and am planning to buy the DNA at retail price. His statement I clearly remember "Why on earth would you pay $600 for THAT phone when clearly you are eligible and able to get a better phone for $99" ... I said nicely that I would like to keep my unlimited data plan. Then he asked me, how much data do I use on a monthly basis ... I replied, usually 30-40GB+ depending. He said "depending?!! that much data should not be allowed, how can one person abuse Verizon..." I just interrupted him loudly saying ...I have UNLIMITED, UNLIMITED means there is no LIMIT! and hung up.
Since then, I blow my data out the water. Hit over 100GB last month myself and plan to do it continually

I just think it's funny that people try to say the unlimited plans were taken away "because of people like you". The reality is that Verizon got rid of unlimited plans because they want to make more money. It has very little to do with the few people here and there who "abuse" their unlimited data.
I personally have unlimited and use as little as 2GB or as much as 10GB on any given month...

Netflix, Downloading ROMs, DropBox (Auto-Upload:I take a lot of pictures and videos) YouTube, Google Music (have no problem streaming 2GB a day worth of music)
So I'm not really "abusing" I'm just taking advantage of my unlimited data, especially since the DNA only has a set amount of storage.
Now me downloading the Windows 7/SP1 ISO files from Microsoft every day would be "abusing" yet still legit
and it is all about Verizon wanting more money... They charging you for data usage and selling you phones without sdcards, forcing you to use their data to use your cloud storage
I think Verizon is "abusing" us!

I agree, Work got me on trips all the time. When at hotels, WiFi costs extra. My phone is the alternative... That uses majority me data there.
I went the route of adding an extra line to get my DNA, came out cheaper that retail!
$199 - for phone with contract
$240 - $10/month for the extra line (2yrs)
$30 - they activate data on the line, switch your two phones then cut the data off the secondary line
I got my DNA for a little over $480 with a pack of 5 free screen protectors lol
My experience with Verizon's customer service has been horrible. If Sprint had the coverage of Verizon, I would still be with them. They finally made things right with me when I was able to do an early upgrade to get my Droid DNA. I was ready to jump back to Sprint lol

Well this month it was roughly 132gb as I recall, I've gotten as high as 200gb before. Bottom line is I pay for unlimited and have had this plan going on six years so lets see 12x6=72x30=2160. That's 2,160 reasons why I don't need to explain myself about how or why I use my phone

I hope you all know eventually they are going to remove the unlimited data plan from everyone. Even when I had unlimited my 3g speeds were so slow on my old phone I never used it, I never even hit 1gb and I still haven't. The most I have ever used was 500mb. But I guess you guys can do as you please since you have unlimited. They can't stop you until they take it away...

Sad thing is I watched a sales rep convice a friend to switch and she got an iPad thinking there's no way I can use all that data they are offering.....sadly she called me the next day saying Verizon ****ed me now......now she's right around same price monthly and is limited

^ interesting. I'm new to Verizon and the phone so I have a limited plan but a co worker of mine long time Verizon person has the unlimited plan he says they tried with him also to change the plan he refused. That's some pretty high usuage you use hehe. I can def see how it can be pretty high I don't use my carrier internet to much but just from streaming music and uploading pictures alone gets me a lot of usage.

Out of curiosity, what are you doing to use that much data? The highest I've gone was like 10 gigs. I don't think I could go any higher if I tried.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm about to get my Droid RAZR replaced to a DNA through warranty and the rep told me I had to pay for the battery and battery cover... I was under the impression that the battery was non-removable. I even have another thread asking this very question and the answer I got was that it was not removable.

Would you be kind enough to explain to someone (a noob) who isn't knowledgeable enough as to understand how a user could use 200 gb a month?
Could someone use 2000gb......8000gb....or a lot more then that a month?
Please tell me how that would be possible even given exaggerated use. I am new to this, and really don't know.
Thanks,
Dan
