[Q] About Proximity Sensor - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone's proximity sensor stopped working, when i restard it works for one or two times and its not working again,
sometimes it is operating normally but about one hour later its stopping again . i was on stock rom and i tried different versions too.
i checked xda before writing this post and i saw one of SG2 owner phones front panel had changed by techical service.
my question is i send the phone to service today, and if there is mechanical problem on my device , they will change it.
So what is yours opinion about it? Is it a hardware or software problem?
Thanks a lot for the answers from now

Is your phone stock?
Have you tried re calibrating?

yes it is and i calibrated 4 or 5 times

Either
Have you a case on the phone if so remove it and test as this is the usual sensor culprit .
have you factory reset the phone ??
If not do so and test
Warranty is void if the phone has root or custom rom or rom counter is above zero be aware before returning to service .

thanks i removed the case before testing and yes i did factory reset before trying,
i used jig before giving it to service,
i know something wrong with the proximity sensor but the thing is confusing my mind; the sensor sometimes operates normally, its stopping working about 1 hour later or something like that, i hope the service decide there is problem with it. Otherwise it is a long process (about 3 or 4 weeks). I dont want to hear from service : there is no issue with your phone after waiting 1 mounth.

It looks like a hardware problem. Ask for a replacement, my friend.

i asked for replacement because i know it is the best phone till SG3 but as i mentioned up there i have doubt is service gonna agree with me?

i got my phone from service today, and they told me there is no problem with the sensors they upgraded to new firmware. I checked again the sensors by *#0*# test. The proximity sensor was same. The funny thing is a guy from technical servis said, there is no proximity sensor in this phone, and i asked which function of phone shuts of the screen while i m making calls? he said it is the light sensor.
i think it is gonna take time....

Hello,
I noticed that the screen of my phone does not turn off when I speak on it so sometime I accidently hang up. I made sure that the proximity sensor in phone setting is on.
when I dial *#0*# and check sensors I get this:
Proximity: Null 0 (0.0.0) sometime (0.0.1)
btw I am on stock KE7 now I came back from Villain 1.1 to see if that fixes the problem and I factory rest many times.
any help ?
Thanks
You dont have a screen protector covering the sensor do you, as some can cause problems.

No I don't
Same problem here
I have the exact same problem, and I wanted to know what did you do, and did you solve it or not?
sounds like a hardware damage.. if you cant live without the sensor(i wouldnt want to ) i would take the warranty claim
I tried flashing it with the oldest and the newest roms on samfirm, and the issue remained with both roms, so i flashed it back to its original ROM and returned the phone today, and i'll wait for a week before getting another (thinking over)

maybe it will....
i remember that i saw one with 2.3.5 that does not have this problem,
the problem is; the rom with 2.3.5 is for a specific region, so it might not work in your device,
additional informations:
i dont have anything attached to my phone, i did a factory reset to the phone
and there is no apps/games installed.
please confirm that you have this problem or not (please mention your android version)
thanks.

One backup data and factory reset.
Or restore your Nandroid backup .
Return to service centre .
jje
if you are still on warranty, do not hesitate to send it back to the service center
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I restored it back to the last time I backed it up and it didn't work. I factory reset it and it worked for like 1 minute. So I left the battery out went to sleep and it worked again so far. Not impressed if it touch screen stops working after 3 months. I will be sending it back with a massive complaint if it does.
Its not normal and either you have something wrong with apps /firmware or its a hardware fault .
Apps Firmware the most likely culprit .

I doubt its apps as I factory reset the phone and it did the same thing but its now working, somehow. So I restored my backup to it and it still works so I don't reckon its firmware/apps issue. When it didn't work I got no response from the touch buttons or the screen. It just didn't work.

Fingerprint sensor error

My Alpha was working normally for 3 weeks, and then a day, it started to give an error when trying to unlock with fingerprint: "an error has occurred with the fingerprint sensor"
I unlocked it with password, then switched off fingerprint lockscreen. Then when I tried to turn it back on (click on the fingerprint manager) it dropped this error again "an error has occurred with the fingerprint sensor".
I have done factory reset, reinstalled with odin, downgraded to 4.4.4, no success. Then I took it to the service centre, they have replaced the home button and updated the software (to the same it was on it previously: 5.0.2 COI3, XEH region). The fingerprint worked at the service centre when I tried it. Then I went back home, done factory reset, few hours elapsed, then I tried to register my fingerprint, and this error showed up again. I reinstalled it with odin, with kies, downgraded to 4.4.4, deleted fingerprint app data, no success. I have found nothing helpful on the internet with hours of searching. It should be software related I think, it's very unlikely, that the hardware error (like unglued home button or something) occurred again, within this kinda short time.
Please help me, what to do. I would be very grateful
Im also having this problem, and many more people i believe. There are some fixes to this like heating it up or something. For some people it works, for some it doesn't.
EDIT: there's a video on youtube about it, you can try it.

I've seen it but I'm afraid that the screen or something will unglue due to the heat...
I ordered Premium Warranty Shipping, with spare phone, I hope they fix it but I will tell them firmly to replace the full phone or refund me the 510$ what's on the receipt.
But I'm open for any solution if anybody have it.

Going to second this, the fingerprint scanner works great for me, also slating a phone because it doesn't have any unofficial support is stupid.
Anyway probably best to send it back
